reetings and Salutations. As we reflect on a very eventful year (and this bumper edition of the Benz Lens) I started wondering about the reasons why someone joins a classic car club. The most popular appears to be the exchange of knowledge. I’m unsure what my exact reasons for joining were, but I do recall wishing for beautiful classic car convoys through stunning scenery, plus a faint hope that I would find fellow Mercedes enthusiasts to indulge in endless conversations about M 04's; or the bizarre unpopularity of a W 6. Although it took me a while to become an active participant in the Western Cape region’s events, I can confidently tell you that I found exactly what I was looking for; and quite a bit more.

2

The vehicles bearing a threepointed star ranged from beautiful post-war fender Benzes to a turbodiesel R-Class, with everything from M 00's to Black Series SL’s filling the timeline gap. It was (and still is) incredible. To witness the amazing diversity of Mercedes-Benzes in our club, plus the passion of their owners. This is especially evident at any Concours event, which I highly encourage you to attend or participate in! Although it’s difficult to join every regional or national event, I always try my utmost to attend a few outings per year. Not just to get my fix of classic Mercedes-Benz eye candy, but also to nurture new and old friendships. These always include good banter, plenty of laughter, plus sincere greetings and heartfelt

enquiries about loved ones; often overpowering the very thing that combined us in the first place: talking about Mercedes-Benzes. Perhaps most members eventually run out of questions, information or fresh anecdotes to share, and they probably care more about their club friends than those beautiful cars in the parking lot outside. With my utmost respect and apologies to those great machines, this leads me to a heart-warming conclusion. The Mercedes-Benz Club of South Africa is a large and wonderfully happy group of friends disguised with the thin veneer of a classic car club. As always, happy reading! ■

Reflecting on 2023 and Looking Ahead

As we near the end of 2023, it's hard not to wonder where the time went.

D

ear Club Members, As we near the end of 2023, it's hard not to wonder where the time went. This year brought its fair share of challenges, notably the persistent issue of loadshedding, yet it failed to hinder our collective enthusiasm and drive within the club. We revved our engines despite the hurdles, taking on extra responsibilities and navigating through the continuous loadshedding, always striving to keep up with the pace. It's been a year filled with rapid changes and trials, and personally, I've embraced retired life with a vigor that surprised even me. Throughout the year, we experienced remarkable events that highlighted our passion for automobiles.

The George Old Car Show and the 6th President's Braai, along with the 38th AGM & National Gathering, stood out as true celebrations of our shared love for everything automotive. Regrettably, the cancellation of our National Concours was a disappointment, but our SLHeritage display at MB Sandown Motors still shone brightly. This year, our partnership with Mercedes-Benz South Africa was revitalized and we extend our sincere appreciation for their continued support. In July, the Club had the honor of attending the AMG Performance Tour, an event that showcased the very best of AMG's offerings, from the thrilling new A45 S mega hot hatch to the sophisticated yet sporty new SL43, at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

In September, a select few were invited to the unveiling of the brand-new Mercedes EQE and EQS SUV's during the Heineken AllInvitational at the iconic Inanda Polo Club. As we approach the year's end, I encourage you to ease off the accelerator and embrace a more leisurely pace. Take this time to cherish moments with family, reconnect with friends, and savor the experiences that might have eluded us in previous years. I must express my absolute

delight in the rejuvenation of our regional and national gatherings this year. Despite the challenges posed by escalating living and fuel costs, the camaraderie and banter within our cherished Merc family have been truly heartwarming. René and I extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones for a peaceful and blessed festive season. May the approaching year, 2024, bring forth remarkable opportunities and an abundance of blessings. For those embarking on travels, please do so with utmost safety in mind. Mercedes-Benz SL Celebration By Steffan Liebenberg and Sven Krassnokutski

Celebrating the Mercedes-Benz SL: in lieu of the National Concours 2023.

B

uilding on the success of last year's magnificent display at the National Concours of generations of S-Class cars since the 950's and before, fervent plans were put in place by Pieter Booysen for a display of SL models to grace the display floor of the 2023 National Concours. Sadly, due to a lack of entries from members to participate in this showcase event, the event had to be cancelled. However, our generous hosts (and some Club members) had already gone to a great deal of trouble to make arrangements, and so, this past Heritage Month, a very special event was held at the flagship Mercedes-Benz Sandton dealership. 2023 marks the introduction of an all new SL generation, internally known as the R232. This all-new design SL is an AMG-powered GT that promises to add "go" to match the show.

The year also marks the 60th anniversary of the W 3 "Pagoda" SL, a 60's icon that has matured into a blue-chip collector's item. There really aren't many manufacturers out there that can boast with the pedigree and prestige that come with a lineage similar to the "Sport Leicht" range of cars that have enthralled fans of the three-pointed star for more than 70 years. This proud heritage was showcased to the public in a spectacular display represented by multiple examples of every SL generation since the 950's! The highlight of the event was a "show and tell" on Saturday 6 September where owners were invited to speak about their cars. Some highlights included two 300SL roadsters, one of the oldest known 90SL’s in South Africa, a beautiful array of Pagodas, multiple representatives of the

longest running SL range in the form of the R 07 (including a rare 560SL) and a few immaculately kept, more modern SL's. It's not often that such a display is seen locally and one could be forgiven for mistaking the pictures for an international showcase. The GP plates and familiar faces from our Club serve as testimony that you don't need to cross an ocean in order to see some truly magnificent motorcars. The day was a great success and these beautiful cars made a lasting impression on their many admirers. However, the richness of the heritage of the Mercedes-Benz brand would have been all the more impressive had the display been part of the Concours event. We appeal to all Club members to prepare and enter their cars for the National Concours as it is the pinnacle of automotive purism.

Let us support the brand for which we all have a passion, our generous hosts, our fellow Club members and our beloved cars by supporting this prestigious event which puts the Mercedes-Benz Club head and shoulders above the rest. As our brand's slogan states: The Best or Nothing! We look forward to seeing you at the 2024 National Concours and trust that we can count on your support. ■

Cars in the Park at Zwartkops By Johan Krogh

The first Pretoria Old Motor Club (POMC) CARS in the PARK was held in 1980 at the POMC Club grounds in Keuning Street Silverton, Pretoria.

t that first event, nine cars of POMC club members were displayed. From 982, other dedicated vehicle marque clubs were also invited to display their vehicles. By 2005, more than 80 clubs, of which the Mercedes-Benz Club is one, displayed around 2 000 vehicles and the POMC grounds became too small to accommodate further growth. After investigation it was decided to move the event to the Zwartkops Race Track in 2006 . The event has evolved to the point where it attracts some 3 000 special-interest cars and motorcycles, over 00 clubs, associated motoring and apparel stores, as well as over 2 000 spectators. It is by far the biggest car show on the South African calendar, and in fact it is the biggest event on the Zwartkops Raceway calendar. Cars that show up every year range from vintage machines dating back as early as 904 to

classics from the 950's and 60's, hot rods, muscle cars, dragsters, customised motorcycles and hot turbo-charged street machines. It’s this varied mix of motorised adoration that makes the event so special. This event is always a favourite with our Club members and this year, hosted on the 6th of August, was no exception. Our stand at the show is strategically placed across from the Mercedes AMG Driving Academy premises at Zwartkops Raceway who once again kindly sponsored us and opened their facilities to Club members for a light lunch and drinks. Many thanks to the Mercedes AMG Driving Academy for their hospitality! We look forward to the next Cars in the Park, to be hosted on the 4th August 2024, and hope to see you all there! ■

Regional AGM and End-of-Year function By Johan Krogh

The Northern Region's AGM and elegant End-of-Year function was hosted at the classy Pheasant Hill Hotel on 3 December 2023.

T

he French-inspired decor and architecture of the boutique hotel nestled in between tranquil gardens near the Rietvleidam in Pretoria provided a luxurious and romantic setting for our special day. Welcome drinks and snacks were served in the beautiful gardens. Formalities on the day included a full chairperson’s report from Anna-Lee Dos Santos, the highlight of the year of course being the 38th AGM and National Gathering that was proudly, elegantly and successfully hosted by our region. Committee and club members were honoured for their many contributions, hard work and magnanimous commitment to the Club and fellow members; to make 2023 an extremely memorable and prestigious year.

NORTHERN REGION It’s a year that Anna-Lee, as chairperson, and all our members can be very proud of and deserving of the three-pointed star heritage. As the Northern Region’s outgoing chairperson, Anna-Lee was thanked for her dedication, devotion and overall flawless leadership during her tenure. We wish her the absolute best for the future but know in our hearts that the Club has a very special place in hers, and we look forward to her spontaneous involvement in the Club going forward! A club, and especially a regional division, is only as good as the commitment and support it receives from its members... and especially those members who dedicate their time to serve on the regional committee.

“Our region is truly blessed...” Our region is truly blessed with a committee that is not only passionate about the MercedesBenz brand but who is in particular passionate about the Club and its members. A huge thanks to all the committee members who devote their time and energy to the Club and its members – you are indeed the best! During the election formalities Koos du Toit was re-elected as regional secretary and Johan Krogh elected as chairperson for 2024. To close off the formalities, Leon Erasmus (on behalf of the Klerksdorp Sports Car Club) invited Northern Region members to the beginning-of-the-year function to be held in Klerksdorp over the weekend of the 20 January 2024.

NORTHERN REGION

We hope and trust that this spectacular and very popular event on our calendar will be well attended. After the formalities, members were treated to a truly magnificent 5-star buffet lunch that catered for all taste buds, but most important was the mingle, conversations and general camaraderie that existed between attending members. This once again emphasises the ideology that we are more than a club – we are indeed family brought together by the love of cars. And not any car... the best or nothing! We look forward to an exciting calendar and line-up for 2024, and trust that our members will once again join and support the initiatives. After all, the Club was created by members for members! We wish you a fantastic festive season and prosperous new year. See you all in Klerksdorp on the 20th of January 2024! ■

CENTRAL REGION

Central Region: from icy cold to overheating in just six months By Jaco Kachelhoffer

In the Central Region the winter is not shy to show its full force and our only remedy against this onslaught is our well known “Vrystaat Kombersie”, O.B.S.

T

his remedy was in good supply at the home of our members Lofty Nel and Fanie Vorster in July this year. This was accompanied by a feast of soups: tomato/bacon, curry calamari and hearty bean. To top up this feast there were homebaked “vetkoeke”, breads and a yummy lemon drizzle cake for dessert. Add a fire burning in the cozy kitchen and you have the recipe for a lovely and very enjoyable evening!

25

CENTRAL REGION

August saw us setting our sights on seeing Fanie and Anita du Preez’s beautiful collection of classics at their home. Our members had a grand time ogling all these beauties – Fanie has some rare vehicles on display and his collection of scale model vehicles is also a sight to enjoy. The fires were lit and soon the smell of braaivleis permeated the air. An evening to remember and hopefully to be repeated as well. The cancellation of our National Concours in September was a disappointment – especially to our very enthusiastic member Niekie Nell, who had already started preparing his W 4 for this event. Next year might see some very good entries from our region.

26

Later in September, the Kachelhoffer Benz Barn hosted a technical evening where an expert auto electrician, Gert Booysen, shared his knowledge with the group attending. In the meantime, our Northern Cape contingent continued with their “Benz Breakfasts” at various locations in the Vaalharts area, adding some eye candy with their beauties on display. A big thank you to Bart Opperman and the others who arrange and attend these functions on a regular basis. In October, Annalie and myself joined the Western Cape region on their Agulhas trip and what a weekend it turned out to be! We saw beautiful places, had fun with

special people and even managed to damage the seat electronics in our R 29 when we waded through a flooded part of the road. I have never before driven my 29 sitting so close to the steering wheel! A bit later in October, a good number of our members headed out to the Be Human farm on the Brandfort road; where we had a

lovely lunch. On this trip we were fortunate to have Jan-Jakkals (Lofty and Fanie’s dog) attending as well. Lastly, in October, our member Johnny Fourie experienced another rendition of the saying “a bee in my bonnet”. He did, in fact, not have a bee in his bonnet, but a whole swarm attached itself to his W 6 – see the photo on the next page –

showing good taste indeed. In November it was time for our year-end function in the very, very, very sunny Northern Cape. Ten of us left Bloemfontein in style (with a Mercedes-Benz 22seater) for the Red Sands Lodge near Kuruman where we met up with the rest of our group: 24 in total.

CENTRAL REGION Apart from being treated to very hot conditions, the lodge served us delicious meals. Some of our members made good use of the swimming pool, while a number of alpacas grazed on the green grass. At our AGM, I was re-elected as Chairman with Annalie as Secretary for 2024. The evening was spent under a starry sky, next to the braai fires and numerous stories (you guessed right – MB related) were swopped. After breakfast the next morning we said our goodbyes to travel back to our various homes. It was a successful weekend indeed. I look back on a reasonably full year and would like to thank all the members, spouses and partners who either arranged or attended our events. Without you, the year would have been a bleak one! ■

Eastern Cape collection hopping By Fabian Cairns

The idea was born about two years ago that we should have a get-together with everyone far and wide for a collectionhopping day or weekend.

30

S

o August 12th to 13th was it. Friday evening had us getting the older cars out and we met up at the Hussar Grill in Walmer for dinner. They organised a separate room from the general dining area and it was great to have the space to have a good chat. Hussar even did a draw which saw Mr. Dodds walk off with a nice bottle of vino. Saturday was a fairly early start, off to St. Georges for a brekkie before we hit the road to see the cars behind closed doors. Perhaps it was a little too early for some, as we arrived in dribs and drabs; a flat battery had Mike stuck on the road but a quick swop and all was good.

Volume 38 | No. 3 | Dec 2023

From breakfast we headed off to Fabian’s new spot in Walmer, and after that, to Anton’s place near Seaview. The lovely selection of vehicles included Ford Anglias and Capris. After snacks and a few cooldrinks, we headed down to the harbour for an early lunch. The Deepsea Anglers Club dishes up a great meal, fresh fish, prawns and the likes. The wind had picked up by this stage - how unusual for PE - but that didn’t dampen our spirits. With some of the guys having had a very early start to get to PE from ELS, the afternoon was free for everyone’s leisure.

Jan was kind enough to open his museum for us to have an evening bring and braai… and it’s always a special treat to see some of his beauties. The weather had deteriorated by this stage and with howling wind and rain, it was a bit of a rush to get meat on the fire before the coals were put out. Nonetheless, a great time was had, with good company, so it was a fantastic weekend all around. ■

Eastern Cape Spring Lunch Run By Fabian Cairns

Off to Jeffrey’s Bay to blow the winter blues away!

W

ith winter behind us, we decided to put together the first summer run: a good ol’ Spring Day lunch with a decent “leg stretch” to blow out the old gals’ pipes, so the Wild Olive at J/Bay was our destination. A small group gathered at the EPVCC as our starting point and off we went, along the back roads through Van Stadens Valley, over the iron bridge and on to our wild destination. Rather unfortunately, loadshedding put a damper on the roast dinner that was planned, but the host managed to make an alternate arrangement and a braai was had instead, with lamb chops, chicken kebabs, etc. After this good meal and a lekker kuier, we all headed back to our respective homes. The old dames performed beautifully and fortunately the weather held, although leaky R 29 roof pistons forced someone to have an enjoyable roof-down jaunt on the return journey. ■

Steytlerville Run By Fabian Cairns

W

After our great trip in February, we proposed a little overnighter at the Royal Hotel on July 8th...

e had a quick whip around and a good few hands were shown... so the trip was on. It was decided we would all meet up at the Grassroof venue in Seaview for breakfast, after which we headed out to Uitenhage to see a lovely collection of VW's. It was an absolute treat, with some very unique and special ladies... from early Beetles all the way up to the modern version, Kombis of all descriptions and with some interesting stories behind them. After we wiped the drool from our mouths, we hit the road to Steytlerville, stopping at Daniels

Cheetah Farm for a regroup and refreshments. That part of our country is special, with beautiful scenery, be it summer or winter. After arrival at the hotel, we all checked in and some headed down the road to the animal sanctuary come car collection, while others rested or had a bit to eat on the veranda. It’s lovely to just sit there enjoying the vibe. The sanctuary owners nurse and rehabilitate rescue animal so we got see an eagle owl and some bat eared foxes, two of which were so badly injured that they were domesticated.

They are both getting on in years, quite shy and notably grumpy, cute but not to be petted. They also have a gathering of some special cars in their shed at the back of the property: a Ford GT40 replica, racing spec AC Cobra, and a couple of other hidden gems. It’s great to see these muscle cars parked in the middle of the Karoo. Late afternoon we were in the pub to watch the rugby, whereafter the hotel laid out a great meal for us. These guys really go out of their way to make it a special occasion. No doubt it was festive too. Sunday morning had a few of us awake to the cranking of engines, a bit blurry eyed and with somewhat heavy heads. Car checks done, jumpers lent, delaminated tyres changed, all was good and ready. Some of the team needed to leave early to head back to East London for other commitments while the rest headed of for a much needed breakfast before we hit the road home. As usual, a good outing, with great comradery… ■

Heritage Day Celebrations By Staff Writer

Something that South Africa and the Mercedes-Benz marque have in common is their rich heritage. What better way to celebrate it than traditional South African cuisine surrounded by our favourite Benz models!

he KZN Region celebrated Heritage Day with a wonderful event on Saturday 23 September, hosted at the Geyser residence and museum, home to an exquisite collection of Mercedes-Benz classic vehicles. Members were invited to park their vehicles on the lawn for display, which were dwarfed by three G-Classes placed at precarious angles on a bank, boasting with their off-road skills. Attendees were also treated to a diverse selection of food. Unsurprisingly, two very delicious curry dishes made by Pravishkar Chandaka and Avish Maharaj were

on offer, as well as a lamb bobotie made by Matt Du Sart and traditionally spiced chicken wings cooked on a braai by host Warren. Pudding came in the form of a divine melktert and malva pudding from Jane and Raymond van Rooyen. Accompanied with some cold beverages on the sun-soaked day, it was the perfect way to celebrate our rich heritage and the brand we all love. Great food, better people, and the best cars. ■

losing the calendar always allows for reflection on events, interactions, and adventures past. But most importantly, it whets our appetites for what lies beyond the border of December 31st. Our Annual General Meeting serves just such a purpose. And as a region, we have been privileged to engage in such diverse activities during 2023, all punctuated by our beloved marque. This year, members were hosted at the hidden gem known as 53 On Winchester, a unique restaurant and function venue in the heart of Reservoir Hills in Durban. Meeting formalities were applauded by an almighty thunderstorm, affirmation of a successful year in KZN. The Regional Committee was unanimously supported to stand for 2024 with Avish Maharaj as Regional Chairperson, Warren Geyser as ViceChairperson / Treasurer, Raymond van Rooyen as Events Co-ordinator and Matt du Sart as Regional Secretary. Expectation and excitement were the condiments to an exquisite dinner as conversation steered to what 2024 holds, particularly the National Gathering and AGM which will be hosted locally. 2024? KZN Year-End Function By Matt du Sart

When the days and nights get warmer and the cicadas start to sing a little louder, it can only mean one thing: YEAR-END FUNCTION!

T

here is not one single member who does not look forward to our regional year-end function. With Raymond van Rooyen as our Events Co-ordinator, we are guaranteed adventure in our magical province. Sometimes it even snows. But not this November! With temperatures in the high twenties, members met for coffee in the parking area at the Mercedes-Benz Brand Centre in uMhlanga. Fuelled by caffeine and home-made muffins, our first stop along the scenic North Coast regional route was the Ballito Farmer’s Market.

The unpredictable November weather (rain, not snow) led us through the various stalls of the market, a definite must for visitors and locals alike when visiting north of the Tongaat River. Back to our chariots, we set off shortly after lunch for our overnight and the venue which would host our celebration of the year in retrospect. Stately amidst the sugar cane fields just inland from Stanger stands Kearsney Manor. Built in the late 1800's by Sir Liege Hulett, Kearsney’s providence is reminiscent of the brand that brings us all together.

After check-in (and some time to explore the exquisite and substantial grounds), club member Gill Cooper dazzled us with her Sommelier skills as we tasted different wines from Backsberg Estate.

From crisp to tart and back again, this offered the perfect entry point to a sumptuous dinner in the perfectly appointed dining room. The pinnacle of our events calendar, Kearsney (and our members) did not disappoint. Here’s to a more abundant, Benzfilled 2024! ■

26th Snoekbraai By René Scribante

A Blossoming Tradition...

I

n the picturesque coastal town of Mossel Bay, Spring arrived in a flurry of excitement and camaraderie at the 26th Annual Spring Snoekbraai, a cherished tradition held at the serene de Bakke venue. For our Club, this event is more than just a barbecue; it's a celebration of Spring, a testament to friendship, and a mark of the vibrant spirit that defines us. This year marked a significant milestone, as we celebrated the 26th braai in the 28-year history of the Southern Cape region of the Mercedes-Benz Club of South Africa. It's fascinating to note that this very region, which has become synonymous with Spring, was

established by the indomitable Kobus Harris. And the inaugural event? A Snoekbraai, of course! Kobus, a seasoned expert, earned his prestigious Master Snoek-braaier color during the 2 st Snoekbraai. Over the years, he graciously imparted his wisdom to numerous club members, shaping them into skilled apprentices. Our heartfelt congratulations and deepest gratitude extend to Kobus, Naas, Chris, Renscke, and Koot, along with Waldo and the countless others who contributed their efforts. Their meticulous planning, including the provision of portable drums for the barbecue, ensured the event's seamless success.

Laughter floated on the breeze, friendships were rekindled, and new connections were formed. The atmosphere was one of peacefulness, friendliness, and genuine sociability, creating memories that will warm our hearts for years to come. As we bid adieu to this year's Spring Snoekbraai, we look forward with hope to the future. May we all be granted the opportunity to relish this wonderful tradition once more, DV, next year. ■

Southern Cape: Oktoberfest By René Scribante

Oktoberfest festivities commenced on September 30th, 2024. The Oktoberfest spans 16 days, with the last day being the first Sunday in October.

espite the rather "cold & wet" climate we experienced during September this year in the Southern Cape, a few dedicated individuals joined us for a vibrant evening filled with beer and joviality. The night kicked off with Erdinger Weiss-beer and pretzels. The gathering featured Eisbein, German sausage platters, and authentic German side dishes expertly prepared by Southern Cape members Chris and Rensche Kühn. Our Oktoberfest evening unfolded beautifully, leaving us content. The highlight was undeniably a Black Forest trifle, complemented by the jovial tunes of German music.

Adorned in traditional German attire, everyone embraced the festive spirit wholeheartedly, and it goes without saying that all of us are eagerly anticipating the celebrations of next year. PROST! ■

ené and Waldo hosted the Southern Cape's year-end "Pig on a Spit" event at the SCRIBS BENZeum, gathering everyone beneath the shade of a venerable American Plain tree for another year-end celebration; the first one beneath this tree dating back to 2006. The feast featured the perennial favorite "pig on the spit," accompanied by pap, sous, and followed by Magnum ice creams, making it a sumptuous affair. René extended a warm welcome to all members and, alongside Koot, presented several gifts.

Marlize received a small token of appreciation for her dedicated work within the Southern Cape region. Kobus Harris was pleasantly surprised with a "Bells Ice bucket" as a replacement for the one he lost the previous year at the Snoekbraai, a search that had been futile until now. In recognition of Koot du Toit's consistent gentlemanly gestures by bringing small items to each Club meeting for René and Waldo, they expressed gratitude by gifting him a bottle of "Gentlemen Jack's from Jack Daniels.”

Lastly, Peet Botha was thanked for his invaluable assistance throughout the year at the SCRIBS BENZeum and "die BENZ.” Warm wishes for a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year were extended to our members, their families, and friends. Mercedes-Benz Constantiaberg opening & EQS SUV launch By Hanjo Stier

A

very welcome part of our relationship with MercedesBenz South Africa is the occasional invitation to the launch of a new product or service. The local brand representatives kindly invited Club members and our President to the grand opening of their newest branch in the Western Cape region: MercedesBenz Constantiaberg. This state-of-the-art building features new and pre-owned floors with the latest interactive sales and marketing tools, as well as green credentials and a workshop built to the newest standards.

62

It’s worth noting that the brandnew construction was a strategic move by its illustrious owner SuperGroup, of which MercedesBenz is a stakeholder. One of the group’s three main Cape Town branches had long ago reached the limits of its building in Claremont, so the decision was made to not only move but re-brand the dealership. Put in simpler terms, MercedesBenz Claremont moved here and changed its name to MercedesBenz Constantiaberg, remaining fairly close to its existing customer base in the Southern Suburbs.

Volume 38 | No. 3 | Dec 2023

At the same time, MercedesBenz and SuperGroup took the opportunity to introduce selected members of the press, business associates and friends of the brand to the latest model in the German manufacturer’s EV line-up: the new EQS SUV. Starting at about R2,730,000 it features incredibly potent electric motors (800Nm) and a battery capable of delivering at least 500km of cruising range. The Constantiaberg dealership is located at Blue Route Mall, just off the intersection of Main and Tokai Road, Cape Town. ■

Sprint Review: Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé By Hanjo Stier

Y

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLE too boring for you? Need some speed but scared of the monstrous 63 AMG's? Well, then this semi-crazy GLE 53 Coupé might just be the car for you…

76

ou should know: In our neck of the woods, the GLE is Merc's proper-sized SUV. Formerly known as ML (or M-Class), it's not quite as bulbous as the GLS (former GL) but offers more space and luxury than its smaller brethren GLC, GLB or GLA. And now there's a whole armada of “EQ” electric versions in the starting blocks… More details: Did someone say “electric”? Bridging the gap between those voluminous AMG monsters and the silent but rather violent EV's, this 53 model uses a mild-hybrid 48-volt assisted 3-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo-petrol to shove up to 336kW or 520Nm through a supremely quick 9-speed automatic gearbox to all four of its 275/50R20 wheels.

Volume 38 | No. 3 | Dec 2023

The manufacturer claims a (limited) top speed of 250km/h and 0-100km/h in just 5.3 seconds. I can confirm that this is absolutely true, because our best Racelogic (GPS) PerformanceBox result was exactly 5.29 seconds. Not bad for a kerb weight of 2,330kg… other crucial numbers include 198mm of ground clearance, a 12.3m turning radius and 655 to 1,795L of cargo capacity. What else? Needless to say, this modern AMG SUV comes with all the keyless bells and self-guided whistles. Fine leather, wireless this and automatic that, acres of crisp displays, tons of vehicle or media settings, it's all here. You also get every contemporary passive and active driver aid, with a few cosmetic or tech-laden options left to select.

Why you shouldn't: None of this comes cheaply, so the starting price for one of these swoopy-back mid-strength AMG brutes is R2,547,000 (November 2023). Some onlookers disliked the hunch-back design of this vehicle where others swooned over its reduced rear quarters, which rob rear head-room but provide an enormous lift-back tailgate. Aaand why you should: The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe 4Matic+ spoils all of its inhabitants with excellent performance (and sound!), outstanding brakes, a great mix of comfort and sporty handling, decent consumption if you behave yourself, fantastic lights, a superb sound system, cool ambient lighting and sumptuous furniture.

I would possibly choose the “normal” shape GLE, but can happily recommend this 53 derivative to anyone who doesn't need a 63's ridiculous performance or crazy fuel consumption. Each new vehicle is also shipped with a 2-year / unlimited mileage warranty and 5-year / 100,000km maintenance plan. ■

Sprint Review: Mercedes-Benz C200 (AMG Line) By Hanjo Stier

Y

The motor industry is fairly complicated these days, no thanks to every brand's insistence on building every single model to fill every single niche...

78

ou should know: Twenty years ago, C200 meant 2-litre 4-cylinder engine. Nowadays, the new norm appears to be that the engine displaces anything but the number on the boot lid. This vehicle actually uses a Renault-sourced 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo-petrol which offers a highly impressive 150kW or 300Nm to play with. What else? Did I mention the 48V hybrid system and 9-speed gearbox yet? Heavens, remember when five or six ratios were considered extravagant? Anyway. All this power goes to the rear wheels for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed around 245km/h. Average petrol consumption from the 66L tank is supposedly 6.8L/100km. More info: Like most of their

competitors these days, MercedesBenz uses a modular platform and shared components during the construction of this C-Class; which happens right here in southern Africa; in East London. Another modern trend is this car's interior, because it consists of daring shapes, concealed garish lighting and what feels like 12 acres of flat screens. The upside of all this tech overload is that the cockpit has a fairly uncluttered layout and gadget-boys or –girls will revel in the multitude of menus and features displayed by the large central command screen. Why you shouldn't: New Mercedes-Benzes have always been expensive, and most car prices in our market have risen to crazy levels, which means that the

car you're looking at now starts at ZAR1,067,000. Alas, Mercedes likes to charge extra for some of the ■ cooler features, plus they've developed a nasty habit of alleging no-cost upgrades only to suddenly nail you with a required and expensive package. Why you should: Because this stylish and highly sophisticated car is available in many interesting shades with very modern cabin choices; at reasonable upgrade pricing. Every new C200 AMG Line is sold with a two-year / unlimitedmileage warranty as well as a fiveyear / 100,000km maintenance plan. ■
