SCAVA’s “Winter Wonderland” Exhibition
On 19 July 2024 SCAVA held an opening evening for its Winter Wonderland art exhibition. On the evening, the Sayers Auditorium at the George Museum was abuzz with excitement as SCAVA welcomed an immense number of patrons and art lovers to its exhibition. While mingling and warming their hands with a heartwarming soup, visitors met with SCAVA artists and engaged them in conversation about their styles and techniques. SCAVA also welcomed many new members and artists who debuted their work at the museum. The eclectic and absorbing artworks displayed the talent of SCAVA artists which charmed both fellow artist and visitor alike.
The Carpe Diem School also showcased their delightful artworks at the Sayers Auditorium. The exhibition ran until 14 August 2024.

Upcoming Exhibitions
A special invitation to participate in SCAVA's November 2024-January 2025 exhibition, titled "n Blom in Elke Vrou".
"n Blom in Elke Vrou" is a stage production by Petronel Baard that captivated audiences in 2023 at the KKNK and Woordfees in Stellenbosch.
It's a light classical, poetic journey through the four seasons, exploring our identity in Africa through native plant life.
Artists are invited to submit art depicting native plant life/landscape in any of the four categories: Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring.
The opening night is on Friday, November 15th, 2024, accompanied by a performance of the stunning show by Petronel, her orchestra led by Franco Engelbrecht, and members of the South Cape Children's Choir conducted by Jan-Erik Swart.
There is a flower in each of us, deserving all the care in the universe. The performance also refers to our inner journey and seasons.
Please note this is a themed exhibition!

First Thursday at the George Library
As part of First Thursday, SCAVA Member, Gerda Smith gave a Multimedia demonstration at the George Library
More collaboration between SCAVA and the George Library is planned for future endeavours.
SCAVA & George Library
Elmine Vorster of the George Library spoke on 2nd August about fostering social cohesion. This talk ended up as an interactive session with idees and perspectives, and very lively and enthusiastic.
The George Library needs creative minds to foster social cohesion and we as artist can help
Here are a few things to think about as to how we can make this happen:
*The ART of research
*Digital tools and resources
*Collaborations and Connections
*The intersection of ART and Information
*Libraries can inspire new perspectives
to name a few…
We are planning more of these interactive talks, but also need to act on them!
SCAVA and the George Library wants to collaborate to help both our worlds flourish.
See you at the next one

TEDx George
SCAVA and TEDx George
What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxGeorge, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxGeorge event, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
“THE BRAVE ONES”
"The Brave Ones" is an attempt to celebrate the local heroes and heroines that have continuously taken brave steps in their respective fields. These individuals may not be the most recognised and acknowledged, but the impact and weight of their ideas are the centre of our attention.
Event: 5 October 2024, 09:00-17:00, George Arts Theatre, 125 York Street, George
SCAVA will have a filler piece as part of this event called: Re-Told

SCAVA Honorary Member Bill Bennett
William Ballantyne Bennett, Bill to family and friends, passed away at his home on Sunday 18 August 2024 in the company of his beloved Jack Russell, Fan. Bill was 84.
I met Bill in March 2010 at the very first meeting of the George Artist Club, at his friend and then neighbour, Ken Smith’s house. He was a founding member and served as treasurer from 2010 until 2022. His meticulous and trustworthy nature made him the perfect candidate for this position. A kind and friendly man and true gentleman of a bygone era.
Bill was a skilled watercolourist; his sensitive portrayals of local scenes was a familiar part of every SCAVA exhibition. For as long as I know, come rain or sunshine on a Monday Bill and Ken sketched outdoors. Local scenes came alive in their sketchbooks. This weekly practice increased his observational skills and showed in the mindfulness and realism of his paintings. On the few occasions that I had the opportunity to join him in a plein air outing, he was the perfect companion, considerate, undemanding, and helpful.
His hearing loss isolated him, but it did not deter him in any way to actively participate in every SCAVA exhibition, always willing to assist with hanging or any chore required of him. When Bill retired as treasurer, the committee elected him as an honorary member of SCAVA.
We will miss him and remember his quiet presence; he embodied this quote of Mark Twain: “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
