Editorial

GreetingsandSalutations,

It's been a year, hasn't it? 2024 will go down in history for its many interesting elections, the possible end of load shedding and another year in which I didn't buy another beautifuloldcar.

There are numerous reasons for that last-mentioned concern but a lack of time and space are competing for first place. Other personal notes include too much travel time, some health hickups in my immediate circle of loved ones, plus a current car or three which threw every single spanner and diagnostictoolbackatus.

But before I launch into a rant about grinding gearboxes and hot start issues, I'd like to swing this text around by mentioning all the thingsI'mgratefulfor.

Myfamilyisprettyhealthyand happy, I have no needs and just a W08-shaped want, plus I think that I'm one of the luckiest guys alive because I'm always involved with Mercedes-Benz Club activities andtheBenzLens.

Case in point: in keeping with mydreamofsurprisevisitstoother regions, this time we weaseled our way into an Eastern Cape weekend getaway at the superb Hitgeheim ResortnearAddoElephantPark.

The stunning scenery and luxury accommodation were only outdonebyArchie'shospitalityand the merry camaraderie of our EC members!

You can read more about that in this issue, plus we have reports of Heritage Day activities, visits to picturesquewinefarms, lotsofcars in parks, at least one coffee run,

some riverside fishing advertures, introductions to the new E-Class, the Distinguished Gentleman’s run, as well as a “retro rides” art exhibition and our regions’ usual year-endfestivities.

And so, while I count my blessings and dream of a 280 SE's hallmark exhaust rasp, I wish you and yours a happy festive season filled with much love, loads of gratitude and safe travels behind a three-pointedstar.

the best in their collections. This year was no exception with a spectacular display of E-Class models from the 950's to the present day - including sedans, coupés, cabriolets and station wagons. We are indeed privileged to be the custodians of these magnificentautomobiles!

Annual Spring Snoekbraai 2024: a blossoming tradition

Held at the tranquil de Bakke

In the picturesque coastal town of Mossel Bay, spring made its grand entrance with a flourish of excitement and camaraderie during the 27th Annual Spring Snoekbraai.

venue, this cherished tradition has become much more than just a barbecue for our club. It's a celebration of spring, a testamenttoenduringfriendships, andareflectionofthevibrantspirit thatunitesusall.

This year marked a delightful evolution of the event as it joined forces with the inaugural Santos Beach Auto Extremo — a retroclassic and modern supercar show that dazzled attendees with its showcase of amazing automotive excellence.

And the perfect pairing? A Snoekbraai, of course! Leading the charge, as always, was Kobus, our seasoned Master Snoekbraaier. Having earned his stripes during the 2st Snoekbraai, Kobus has since shared his expertise with countless other club members, mentoring them into becoming rather accomplished braaiers themselves.

Our heartfelt thanks and congratulations go to Kobus, Naas, Chris, Renscke and Koot, as well as the other dedicated contributors who made this event possible.

SOUTHERN CAPE REGION

Their meticulous planning, which included arranging portable barbecue drums and managing logistics, ensured the day ran smoothlyandseamlessly.

The de Bakke venue, bathed in the gentle warmth of spring, providedtheperfectsettingforour gathering. Coupled with splendid weather, the atmosphere was nothing short of magical. The air was alive with laughter as old friends reunited, new connections were made, and the simple joy of sharing good food and great company filled the day It was a celebration of peacefulness, friendship, and the kind of camaraderie that builds lasting memories.

As we bid farewell to this year's Snoekbraai, we do so with gratitude in our hearts and hope for the future. May we all be granted the opportunity to gather once again, to carry forward this treasured tradition in the years to come.■

Scribante - 1968

Hello, everyone!Allow me to once again introduce myself:

I am Pagoda, a proud 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL, and my owners are Waldo and René. In our family collection, fondly referred to as the “SCRIBS BENZeum,” I am, without a doubt, the favorite—at least, that’s my opinion!

Today, I want to share the delightful experience of my second road trip on the Erfenistoer. When my owners chose me again for this year’s tour, I was thrilled—especially since I didn’t finish the Erfenistoer adventure last year This time, I made sure to shine, freshly polished and gleaming, for the starting event at HalfwayToyota George, where the media couldn’t resist capturing me in all my glory.

As we set off, we took in the magnificent sights of the Outeniqua Pass and the winding beauty of Meiringspoort, my engine purring like a contented cat.Aspecial highlight was Brandon, with his video camera, who captured my flawless performance as we conquered those scenic roads what a thrill to be in the spotlight!

I was also delighted to reunite with my younger cousin, René’s 1971 VW Porsche 914, who joined us for the first leg to Klaarstroom. It was wonderful to meet old friends again, likeAndré Fourie’s stunning 300SL, Chris and Rensche Kühn’s charming W110, and a few familiar W123's. Sadly, we missed the cheerful blue Morris Minor belonging to Pierre andTilly Olivier!

After a delightful lunch at the Klaarstroom Hotel, we cruised onward to the charming town of PrinceAlbert. This year everything ran like clockwork, and I was glad to leave behind the mishaps of last year

The next day brought us to the historic Matjiesfontein, where the famous Lord Milner Hotel provided the perfect backdrop for some memorable photos. Later, we paused at Karoo 1 Hotel & Resort, where the unique African-beaded sheep in their “roundabout kraal” made for another wonderful photo opportunity

The tour ended at the breathtaking Gourikwa Coastal Resort, where I had to bid farewell to my fellow classics. It was bittersweet, but I was glad to return home to my siblings at the BENZeum—though I couldn’t help noticing the Porsche 914 eyeing me with a tinge of jealousy. Maybe next year, little cousin—if you’re lucky!

Until the next adventure, “Pagoda”

An annual snoek braai in

Extending

the Tradition

As published in the October 2024 edition of

A rapid trip in a real GT...

Mossel Bay that over nearly three decades have become a tradition amongst members of the Mercedes-Benz Club recently was extended into a full-blown car show We visited the inaugural event, set against the spectacular backdrop of Santos Beach, in the magnificent and incredibly powerful GT 63 S E Performance, the first performance hybrid by Mercedes-AMG

Grand tourer, gran turismo, and GT … What originally was defined as the enjoyment, excitement, and comfort of openroad touring in a car designed for high speed and long-distance driving with performance and

luxury, have become some of the mostmisusedtermsinmotoring. Nowadays every second model is named GT – even if it only signifies a slightly tuned version of afamilycarwithtrendywheelsand go-faster stripes – due to the popularity of the term for marketingpurposes.

Historically,GTcarshavebeen front-engined vehicles with rearwheel-drive, more cabin space than mid-engined cars, with softer suspensions, more luggage space, and more luxury appointments than sports cars … Classic examples include models such as the Ferrari 250 GT, Jaguar E-Type, Aston Martin DB5, Mercedes-Benz 300SL,andMaserati3500GT.

Images: © Ryan Abbott
Driven magazine

Which brings us to the Mercedes-AMG GT, spiritual successor to the iconic Gullwing, and specifically the latest GT four-door Coupé … In truth, the term four-door Coupé is a misnomer, as such a thing cannot exist. Yet, much like the misuse of GT, the description has stuck –defining what in essence is a fastback saloon. And in our view, the Mercedes-AMG GT should be designatedassuch.

Mind-blowingpower

Whatever one wants to call it, fact remains the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SEPerformanceisnotonlythefirst performance hybrid vehicle from Affalterbach, but also the most powerful production vehicle from the three-pointed star brand, incorporating Formula One technology in its E Performance Hybrid strategy to deliver truly staggeringperformance.

Although related to the twoseat AMG GT models, the GT fourdoor is derived from the E63 wagon, but its performance chassis features an AMG-specific rear frame and different front axle setup. As the GT flagship, the system in the S E Performance consists of a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, a high-performance battery, and the fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+all-wheel-drivesystem.

Combined, the system delivers620kWofpowerandmore than 400 Nm of torque (!). This mind-blowing power enable acceleration from standstill to 00 km/h in only 2.9 seconds and 200 km/h is reached in less than ten seconds. Continuous acceleration only ends at 36 km/h And the best of all is the way in which this powerisdelivered.

With seven AMG driving modes available (Electric, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race, Slippery, and Individual) the GT delivers a wideranging driving experience – from highly efficient to highly dynamic –by adjusting the response of the drivesystemandtransmission, the steering characteristic, the suspension damping, or the sound.

Thus, start-up is silent, with only a sonorous sound indicating the car is ready to drive. On allelectric power, a low-frequency, speed-dependent AMG sound is emittedtotheoutside.

It can also be heard at a subdued level in the interior, as acoustic feedback for the passengers.

At higher speeds, the sound experience can be altered using buttons in the centre console or on thesteeringwheel.

All-electric driving is possible from standstill up to 30 km/h in the GT but when the 400 Volt battery runs down, the combustion engine starts up to provide propulsion. The 6. kWh battery has 70 kW of continuous output and 50 kW of peak output for ten seconds. It is designed for fast power delivery but has a range ofaround2km.

So, in Electric or Comfort mode the AMG GT 63 S E Performance will quietly and serenely cruise through town, with the occupants comfortably cosseted in the luxurious, well-

appointed, and high-quality interior. However, start playing with the MBUX system and the red AMG buttons on the steering wheel, anditsdemeanourchanges drastically.

Sport mode awakens the beast, but Sport+ (not to even mention Race mode) unleashes it, with the exhausts burbling and spitting on downshifts of the MCT9G transmission, and the V8 howling ferociously as the boost from the battery and turbos kicks in. The full combined boost power from the electric motor and engine pushes you back hard into the sports seat, as the big screaming fastback saloon, now fully alive, do silly numbers accelerating up the road…

SOUTHERN CAPE REGION

SouthernCapetour

The inaugural Santos Beach AutoExtremo car show formed the final leg of a tour of the Southern Cape, from Cape Town to Mossel Bay. Organised by the Southern Cape region of the Mercedes-Benz Club, the two-day tour started in Paarl and then went to Franschhoek before the convoy of delectable Mercedes-Benz models turnedtowardsVilliersdorp.

Driving from Cape Town in the AMG GT, we caught up with the group at the Stettyn Family Vineyards for a light lunch before the group, consisting of a selection of classic SLS, 90 SL, and other Mercedes models, set off for Bonnievale…

The group overnighted at the Angora Stud Guest Farm near Bonnievale, renowned for owners Bertus and Rozitha Oosthuizen's magnificent collection of classic Mercedes-Benz (and some other) cars and its picturesque setting. After a superb breakfast the next morning, the convoy drove to BarrydaleontheR62.

We then negotiated the Tradouw Pass, and here the big GT with its AMG Performance 4Matic+ drive system and AMG Ride Control+suspensionsystemwasin its element. Although heavy (it weighs over two tons), the startlinglyfastfour-doorfeltwieldy and lithe in the corners – a real tribute to the AMG chassis engineers.

From here we followed the N2 towards Mossel Bay for a light lunch in town before checking in at the Diaz Hotel and Resort and started preparing the participating vehicles for the motor show the next day. This inaugural event, according to Waldo Scribante, chairman of the Mercedes-Benz

SOUTHERN CAPE REGION

Club, was an extension to the annual Spring snoek braai of the club.

“Our annual Snoek Braai, started by club member Kobus Harris 27 years ago, has become legendary amongst our club members,” he said. “Mossel Bay is also renowned for some of the finest snoek in South Africa, so we felt the time was ripe to establish this event to also showcase the naturalbeautyofMosselBay.”

A celebration of both classic cars and modern supercars, the setting for the exclusive car show within touching distance of Santos Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, rival some of the top classis car events in the world.

The turnout for the event surprised even Scribante, and with over hundred delectable vehicles on display, the inaugural Santos Beach Auto Extremo was a great success, and the GT 63 S E Performance added to the lustre. Like the fish braai, the show is now settobecomeanannualevent…

AtrueGTcar

The same way in which the Santos Beach Auto Extremo has now extended an old tradition, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is an extension of the StuttgartSLheritage.

With space to seat four in blissful comfort and power to unsettle any supercar, it is a revelation on the road, a GT car in thetruesenseoftheterm.

With its unbelievable power reserve, practicality, on-road comfort and grandeur, the new four-doorMercedes-AMGGT63SE Performance sets new benchmarks for a GT car, and it is now without doubt my favourite highspeedcross-countrycruiser...■

Following our very enjoyable soup and sherry evening in August, our region had mixed success with the functions that followed.

Our September function

unfortunately had to be put on hold, and I for one was very disappointed that we did not get to see a local Bloemfontein entrepreneur living his passion for building his own racing cars – the Barnard supercars. Hopefully we willbeabletowitnessthisinthenew year.

We made up for it in October whenwewentforaboatrideonthe Modder River near Bloemfontein, onavesselaptlycalled theModder River Express. During the 3-hour leisurely trip on the river, we were

treatedtoasteaklunch, livelymusic and stunning views of some lush gardens and mansions on the river banks. Paul van Wyk and his wife Thea joined us on this trip and they drove to the venue in style in a 23 230 TE that he had renovated by Kundendienst in Bloemfontein – a jobtheydidsowellthatPaulhadno problemsindoinga3.5hours'drive homeinjustover2.5hours...

Weekend at Hitgeheim Country Lodge

The first weekend of September saw the Eastern Cape Region head off to Hitgeheim Country Lodge.

This very exclusive lodge caters

Our region’s Port Elizabeth and East London guys got together and booked out all 16 chalets. We also had Hanjo join us from Cape Town, he and his little family did the long haul and it was great having them around, nottomentionthatsneaky bottleofJägerwhichhelpedtoease thedrythroats.

The Eastern Cape chapter had the lucky opportunity to take their luxury barges for a "run" up to the beautiful Huntshoek Lodge for a weekend late in November.

This was the first year that the committee added this event to the calendar and was unique in the sense that the event not only provided drives throughout the world, or even throughout South Africa, but in particular provided several drives in our Northern Region. After a very successful and busy calendar, it was time to relax and close the year off on a high note, quite literally, as members were treated to the sounds and vibe of a live band!

The Northern Region’s well-

We were very lucky indeed to have among our guests, Steve Rademeyer, the first president of our Club, which will be celebrating its40thanniversarynextyear.

We also welcomed the KZN Region’sever-popularchairperson, Avish Maharaj who, according to him, only attended for the superb lamb spitbraai that was on the menu. However, we have our own suspicions for his visit – either he is lookingatrelocatingtojointhebest region, or he is attempting to gain insight into our success over the past year to implement in his own region.

Sprint Review: 2023 Mercedes-Benz A200 Sedan

The more things change, the more they stay the same. A few decades ago, an entrylevel Mercedes could still be a status symbol, and this new A200 Sedan is much the same.

You should know: I base this

claim on my powers of observation while conversing with thegeneralpublic.

Bright eyes report of their neighbour’s amazing new AMG, which turns out to be a diesel BClass, or someone gushes with pride about their new Mercedes AClass. It doesn’t matter to most folks,aBenzisaBenz.

Mhh. What else? Barring its hatchback sibling (which I also got toexperiencein200AMG-Linetrim) this A200 sedan is the cheapest entry into the world of the threepointedstar.

Depending on which premillenniumdecadeyouprefer,this would’ve been a cream or white 90E, 200 or 200E. With crank windowsand“MB-Tex”vinylseats.

More info: Other trademarks whichhavealwaysdefinedthefirstpage content of Mercedes’ sales brochures are decent safety items (check!),sufficientluxurytrim(yup), plus a small but efficient drive train (present…).

In this case, a very eager .3L 4cylinder turbo-petrol with 80+ horsepowerandsevengears.

Mercedes-Benz claims average fuel use of just 5.4L/00km from the 43L tank, plus 0-00km/h in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 230km/h.

The last two values sound hauntingly familiar to a former W202 C280 owner, i.e. me, except that my Nautical Blue C280 never cracked nine seconds in the 0-00 sprintandourlate2023testofthat A200hatchbackyielded8.5.

Why you shouldn’t: Yes, the tiny .3L engine is Renault-sourced and transversely mounted, driving the front wheels via a nervous dualclutchtransmission…allofwhichis stillnewterritorytoMercedes-Benz clientele but seems absolutely fine in today’s market. Also, the base price ofaboutR83,000can quickly swell if you want to include some missingniceties.

For the record, this AMG-Line trim costs R29,000 extra and at the time of writing (July 2024) Mercedes-Benz South Africa has trimmed your choice of exterior paint colours down to just five: white, black, grey, silver and blue. Themuch-hatedRoseGoldMetallic onourA200hatchbacktestcarwas (no doubt by public decree) taken outbackandgivenleadpoisoning.

Why you should: What this A200promisesisthesnobappealof that humungous grill star, a snug but clever cabin, decent safety kit for all occupants, fairly pliant ride, plusafairlyefficientdrivetrainwith surprisinglygoodpower.

Each new Mercedes-Benz A200 sedan is sold with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty and 5-year / 00,000km maintenance plan. ■

Tested: 2024 MercedesBenz GLE 450d AMG Line

The market for luxury SUV's is bursting at the seams, spilling out of all gaps and fit to burst for the umpteenth time. Meet the new Mercedes-Benz GLE 450d…

Yesterday afternoon I ran into a

minor inconvenience. With my wife's trusty SUV being in for some repairs to remedy its current untrustworthiness, we took one of my beloved classic coupés for a quickvisittothelocalshops.Where, owing to the car's larger doors, I chosetoparkinthegramadoelasfor easierpassengerexitandentry.

However, with a late afternoon attack ofshoppers,whenthe2.5of us returned to my vehicle, it was flanked on either side by gigantic SUV's: a Discovery 4 and some sort of Ford. Both of them had a right to be there – in a rapidly moving parkinglot–butsuddenlywehadto take care not to ding the elongated dooredgesofmypreciouscoupé.

With our car well within the confines of its demarcated bay (althoughataslightlyjauntyangle)I initiallygotirritatedbythetwo4x4's for stopping dangerously close to thedividinglines. However, thiswas untrue because modern SUV's are so big that they simply don't fit into the standard-sized parking bays of avillageshoppingcentre.

Furthermore, when I tried to reverse out of our erstwhile lonely bay, itturnedoutthatIcouldn'tsee ablimmin'thingexceptforachunky Fordfender.AndsoIhadtoreverse by ear, which inevitably resulted in the irritated hooting by a hurried shopper leaving the parking lot. Worse still, another SUV driver was departinganopposingbaybecause

s/hehadcompletelyfailedtonotice the small blue two-door gently backinguptowardsthem.

Why am I telling you all of this? Because it irks me to no end that I am trapped in a world which has gone SUV-mad. At my daughter's 6th birthday party, half the moms had shocked expressions when I saidthatcity4x4'sarewastefuland theotherhalfnoddedsilentlywhen I alleged that these vehicular egoextensionstendtostayontarmac.

However, thedodgyfarmroads, countless speed humps and feral potholes are so much more bearable when we slam through them in my darling's lumbering 4WD gas guzzler. Which brings us, after six whiney paragraphs, to the doorstep of this new MercedesBenzGLE450d.

Let's immediately deal with its city 4WD credentials. Its heft and girthcaneasilykeepupwithFordor Landy's finest, while the raised driving position and seemingly solid construction gives suburban parents that all-important air of invincibility. Will it survive a direct cruise missile hit? Certainly not, plusI'minnopositiontotestthat.

However, thanks to enormous wheelsandsuperbsuspension, this Stuttgartbruisercanavoidorbrush off minor parking altercations. I havetostressthe“minor”attribute of that statement because a bumper or alloy repair on one of thesebruteswillnotcomecheap.

And for the second time as a temporary GLE 450d pilot, I initially thought that this vehicle was equipped with super soft air suspension… but the missing air ride controls in the centre console confirmed that this car sits on a conventional spring-and-damper setup.

REVIEW

What I'm trying to illustrate by thisstatementisthatamodernGLE withnormalsuspensionhasoneof theebestridesyoucanget.

There are more deductions I'd like to make here, should you purchase a specimen and tick the box for “Airmatic”. Firstly, the ride willdoubtlessbeakintofloatingon a cloud and secondly, any large Mercedes SUV with that system should be able to perform the viral video dance… which is actually a softsandrescuemode.

Initsbasespecification, theGLE offers various driving modes, including an off-road setting with slightly tweaked gear change and throttleresponse.Anddon'tworry, modernurbanites, itmostcertainly has a Sportsmode which gives you 100%morepowerandtheabilityto

beat a Porsch. And to complete my intendedcynicism, that's as untrue as my colloquial spelling of Sport ModeandPorsche.

Putyourfootdown(inanymode beside Eco) and this car should hit 100km/h in 5.6 seconds while running out of momentum at the agreed 250km/h limit. That's thanks to the 2,989cc in-line 6cylinder turbo-diesel churning out a massive 285kW or colossal 750Nm through nine gears to all four wheels. Our best of two 0-100 runsresultedin5.76secondsanda single emergency brake test from 100km/htook3.4seconds.

Can it pair with your iphone Galaxy 39 Plus? Of course it can. Doesthe“HeyMercedes”ladylivein the dashboard mainly to impress your friends? Yes. Are the sound

system and headlights literally brilliant? You betcha. Is it available in Hilux White wiff scorching black leather? Uhh, I don't think I've ever seen one in a different colour combination, tobehonest.

And that's probably the worst way to circle back to our SUV dilemma. The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 450d is super impressive in terms of power, efficiency, comfort andtech, andalthoughitcutsquite a handsome figure, I remember temporarily losing one of mine in a crowdedWindhoekcityparkinglot.

Each new Mercedes GLE is sold with a 2-year / unlimited-mileage warranty and 5-year / 100,000km maintenanceplanwithyourchoice of nine exterior and 1.5 interior colours. As long as you pick white withblack, ofcourse. ■
