“to love what you do”

Chairperson

From the Chair

Dear SCAVA members,

A warm embrace to each of you, reflecting on the vibrancy that have shaped the past year. Our journey has been a full and fulfilling one, with lots of new creative endeavours and collaborations! It has been marked by the resounding success of our Visual Art Competition and Exhibition, where the walls came alive with the powerful stories told through our artwork.

A special highlight has been our incredible current exhibition "’n Blom in Elke Vrou". Petronel Baard with her amazing insights and inspiration, has made this an extraordinary exhibition and opening event, which has captivated us all. This production is very close to Petronel’s heart and what an honour to share it with us, that we could put her words into visual art.

A sincere acknowledgment goes to our dedicated committee, whose tireless effort and commitment over the past year have been the guiding force behind our collective artistic journey.

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, let us carry forward the energy and enthusiasm that has defined this year, ready to fill the canvas of the future with even more shared experiences, artistic expressions, and the joy of creating together. Wishing all our members and their loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

SCAVA provides its members the opportunity to take part in exhibitions in the Southern Cape and beyond.

SCAVA’s “Visual Expressions” Competition & Exhibition

This exhibition was a celebration in honouring the arts. It is no small thing for an artists to put down the first mark on an glaring white canvas, to put your heart and soul into a painting and then putting it on display for all to see. We celebrated each and every artist that participated for doing just that. In the words of van Gogh “what would live be if you don’t have the courage to attempt anything” Remember that your art has the power to inspire, provoke thought, and ignite conversations that transcend barriers.

This year we had 64 artists participating with a total of 187 artworks that were judged in the competition. Truly amazing!

A sincere gratitude to our esteemed panel of judges, Liza Grobler, Fawa Conradie and Hermann Niebuhr, who undertook the challenging task of evaluating the artworks. Their discerning eyes and profound appreciation for the arts have ensured that the most exceptional pieces have been recognized and rewarded

A special acknowledgment goes to our incredible curator Ian Tainton who made this exhibition a vision to the eye. To all the SCAVA volunteers who have helped with the intake of the artwork, also to get the art pieces on the walls, a massive thank you, we appreciated all your help.

We have the utmost gratitude to the George Museum, Lorrinda Hakimi, and MANCO for the most wonderful opportunities to exhibit in the magnificent space of the Sayers Auditorium. It provides the perfect canvas for our artists' creations to come to life and be appreciated by all who visit.

SCAVA & ODIN (Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need)

ODIN(Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need) Fundraiser:

This year, SCAVA introduced its ODIN fundraiser which invited artists to submit miniature artworks on canvas which were sold at a set price of R500 each, of which proceeds went to ODIN. The response from local artists was overwhelming, and these miniature works were on display in the Foyer of the Sayers Auditorium of the George Museum. There were many beautiful pieces available to purchase for this worthy cause, and we are so happy that we could make a small difference in some animal’s lives. SCAVA hopes to make this a regular event.

SCAVA & Poetry

The magic continues with the collaboration of Visual Arts & Poetry as the poems that have been recited by their creators, Saturday 9th September, have found their place on our gallery walls of SCAVA’s “Visual Expressions” Competition Exhibition, right next to the paintings that inspired them.

SCAVA “Visual Expressions” Closing Event

SCAVA’s Visual Expressions Competition Exhibition closing event took place on Friday night 27 September, in the Sayers Auditorium of the George Museum.

A huge congratulations to Gretha Helberg who was awarded the Artsavingsclub’s Viewer’s Choice Trophy with her artwork “I see you” Thank you to Artsavingsclub for their generous contribution to SCAVA and their members.

It was an absolute privilege to end the night while sitting amongst visual art and listening to musical art by Christopher Petrie, goosebump moments…

Petronel Baard and SCAVA

“”n Blom vir Elke Vrou” Exhibition

This endeavour is a collaboration that started when Petronel first reached out to me early this year to explore the possibility of working with SCAVA. Her dedication to bringing her art to life through multiple forms of expression is truly inspiring.

Petronel Baard, brought such energy and vision to this project. Petronel, her talented and extremely capable orchestra led by Franco Engelbrecht, and members of the award-winning and world known South Cape Children's Choir of the renowned musician and choirmaster JanErik Swart, guided the audience through a unique experience on the opening evening on 15 November, blending music with the art you see on the walls, with their performance of the production ‘n Blom in Elke Vrou.

Petronel Baard is a renowned South African musician, composer, and performer with an impressive CV. In 1999 she won a national singing competition called ATKV-Crescendo and is now a mentor for Crescendo. She writes, performs and produces her own productions and music. Her recent acclimates include a nomination for a SAMA and FNB Theatre Award for best Cabaret Artist and in 2024 now recently, was awarded "Die Orde van die Ster" by Cordis Trust for her continued dedication and creation in the South African arts and culture sector, just to name a few among many.

‘n Blom in Elke Vrou is very dear to Petronel’s heart and working with her on this project for SCAVA, has been an absolute pleasure. Her dedication, hard work, and vision have truly made this exhibition something extraordinary. She has a beautiful and pure heart.

A lot of the artworks on the walls have been created specifically for this exhibition ‘n Blom in Elke Vrou. Take the time to absorb the depth, the beauty, and the emotions that each piece represents. It’s a celebration of the strength and resilience of women, but also of mankind, and a tribute to the endless potential that blooms within every one of us and our inner journey and seasons.

This exhibition will be running until the 23rd of January 2025.

The tpic were: “THE BRAVE ONES”

"The Brave Ones" is an attempt to celebrate the local heroes and heroines that have continuously taken brave steps in their respective fields. These individuals may not be the most recognised and acknowledged, but the impact and weight of their ideas are the centre of our attention.

SCAVA did a filler piece called Re-Told, with portraits for this event and we were also present by having a booth which some our our members manned, at the event that took place at the George Arts Theatre, 5 October 2024.

Opening of the New Gretha Helberg Art Gallery in Riebeek-Kasteel: A Celebration of Creativity

The recent opening of the new art gallery in Plein Street, Riebeek-Kasteel, has brought a vibrant pulse to the local arts scene.

On a vibrant afternoon on 30 November, art enthusiasts, local artists, and community members gathered to celebrate this exciting addition. The gallery, part of Rodney & Robert's Regalia Restaurant complex, features a diverse collection of contemporary and traditional artworks of more than 35 South African artists.

The inaugural exhibition showcases local talent, highlighting the unique perspectives and creativity of emerging artists. Marius Prinsloo of Perron FM Radio Station opened the event with an engaging talk about art in general.

The gallery aims to become a hub for cultural exchange, offering "Printmaking in the Sun" workshops from June 2025 that invite everyone to explore and connect with the world of art.

With its commitment to promoting local South African talent and fostering creativity, the new art gallery is poised to play a vital role in enriching the community’s cultural landscape. Its opening marks not just the launch of a space for art but a celebration of the collective imagination that defines us all.

Gretha Helberg, the curator and owner of the gallery, is an artist herself, and her aim is to help as many emerging artists as possible to get exposure by exhibiting their work, hand-picked by her, in her gallery.

The next intake of art will be mid-February, and the theme for the March - May 2025 exhibition will be "Naked Truth."

Contact Gretha for more info at 072 605 6192.
