Dear Esteemed Members,
As we once more find ourselves gathered by a shared affection for the splendour of classic automobiles and the allure of the open road, it is only fitting to reflect upon the remarkable journey we have travelled together.
The memories of our 12th Erfenistoer still linger, serving as a testament to the camaraderie and unbridled delight that accompany each journey in our cherished classics. These fine machines, emblematic of a bygone era, continue to exemplify engineering excellence and provide us with endless moments of pleasure on the highways and byways of this grand land.
I would like to extend a special word of thanks to Mark Jones and the entire team at Halfway Toyota George for their generous cash sponsorship. It is a privilege to be associated with such a distinguished dealership. Their support has not only been financial; they have gone above and beyond by providing us with both a tow vehicle for backup and recovery, as well as a media vehicle. Their commitment to the safety and well-being of our beloved classic cars is deeply appreciated.
I must also express my sincere appreciation to our dedicated SCOCC committee members, and in particular, my co-tour organisers, Chris and Rensche Kühn, along with our treasurer, Chris van Staden. Their tireless efforts and unwavering dedication have been instrumental in bringing this tour to life.
As we approach our forthcoming Annual General Meeting on Saturday, the 23rd of November 2024, I extend a warm invitation to each of you. More than a mere meeting, it is an occasion to celebrate our collective enthusiasm, reflect on the year’s motoring adventures, and look forward to the promising roads that lie ahead.
Following the meeting, on Sunday, the 24th of November, we shall gather for our Yearend function, a delightful braai at Die BENZ. This cherished tradition, where we share good food, fine company, and, of course, our beloved classics, perfectly embodies the spirit of our club – a family united by a shared passion for vintage vehicles.
Looking ahead, preparations are well underway for the 28th George Old Car Show, which is set for Saturday, the 8th of February 2025. This year’s event will pay homage to the elegance of British motoring, with a special exhibition featuring Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. The festivities will continue into the evening with a Bring n Braai at Carpe Diem School, followed by the post-show GOCS eSCape-tour on Sunday, where we shall traverse the picturesque Southern Cape and Karoo region of the Western Cape. Further details will follow in due course.
As we embark upon yet another year filled with spirited drives, stimulating technical discussions, and unforgettable moments, I encourage you all to stay safe, keep those engines finely tuned, and embrace the exhilaration of the open road.
Here’s to another splendid year of vintage car adventures! Kind regards,
Waldo Scribante
Chairman: SCOCC
Hello, everyone! Allow me to once again introduce myself:
I am Pagoda, a proud 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL, and my owners are Waldo and René. In our family collection, fondly referred to as the “SCRIBS BENZeum,” I am, without a doubt, the favorite—at least, that’s my opinion!
Today, I want to share the delightful experience of my 2nd road trip on the Erfenistoer. When my owners chose me again for this year’s tour, I was thrilled—especially since I didn’t finish the Erfenistoer adventure last year. This time, I made sure to shine, freshly polished and gleaming, for the starting event at Halfway Toyota George, where the media couldn’t resist capturing me in all my glory.
As we set off, we took in the magnificent sights of the Outeniqua Pass and the winding beauty of Meiringspoort, my engine purring like a contented cat. A special highlight was Brandon, with his video camera, captured my flawless performance as we conquered those scenic roads—what a thrill to be in the spotlight!
I was also delighted to reunite with my younger cousin, René’s 1971 VW Porsche 914, who joined us for the first leg to Klaarstroom. It was wonderful to meet old friends again, like André Fourie’s stunning 300SL, Chris and Rensche Kühn’s charming W110, and a few familiar W123s. Sadly, we missed the cheerful blue Morris Minor belonging to Pierre and Tilly Olivier!
After a delightful lunch at the Klaarstroom Hotel, we cruised onward to the charming town of Prince Albert. This year, everything ran like clockwork, and I was glad to leave behind the mishaps of last year.
The next day brought us to the historic Matjiesfontein, where the famous Lord Milner Hotel provided the perfect backdrop for some memorable photos. Later, we paused at Karoo 1 Hotel & Resort, where the unique African-beaded sheep in their “roundabout kraal” made for another wonderful photo opportunity.
The tour ended at the breathtaking Gourikwa Coastal Resort, where I had to bid farewell to my fellow classics. It was bittersweet, but I was glad to return home to my siblings at the BENZeum—though I couldn’t help noticing the Porsche 914 eyeing me with a tinge of jealousy. Maybe next year, little cousin—if you’re lucky!
Until the next adventure, “Pagoda”
Before and up to 1947, the town of Umzinto was the Centre of the mid-South Coast. There were no coastal roads and double-lane highways back then. A trip from Port Shepstone to Durban was quite an outing, with the only route a sandy track winding through Umzinto and on to Illovo where the tarmac eventually began.
In 1965 the small town of Park Rynie would become the home and the humble beginnings of “Halfway Service Station“ aptly named due to its location between Durban and Port Shepstone. From one small service station, the Halfway group grew to include Toyota dealers nationally, with a George branch being acquired in 2006. Since 2015 Halfway Toyota George has experienced unprecedented growth under the leadership of the Jones family, with the commitment of a dynamic team and support of the George community the branch continues to go from strength to strength and looks forward to years of success as we nurture our relationships with our valued customers.
We aim to consistently provide the best service to our guests. We understand that this not only means offering world-class vehicles but creating sustainable long-term relationships with our customers.
Welcome to the 2024 Heritage Tour! We are thrilled to be part of this year’s adventure, and itʼs a pleasure to join forces once again with the South Cape Old Car Club. Weʼre looking forward to another unforgettable journey filled with classic cars and cherished memories.
This yearʼs route is set to captivate you with its stunning scenery. From picturesque rural roads to charming towns, every mile promises to be a visual delight. We’ve handpicked the finest overnight accommodations and rest stops to ensure your comfort and enjoyment throughout the tour.
We wish you a smooth and trouble-free experience, but if you encounter any unexpected hiccups with your beloved vintage vehicle, donʼt worry—our Broom Wagon will be ready to assist. Plus, a media vehicle, provided by Halfway Toyota, will be capturing every moment of the tour for future generations to appreciate.
The kickoff event and the farewell at Knysna Road remain highlights of our year. Seeing all those extraordinary cars come together is truly inspiring, and our team is eager for the excitement of September 20.
This tour is a wonderful way to celebrate our motoring heritage with fellow restorers and enthusiasts from across the South Cape and beyond. As we mark both Heritage Month and Tourism Month, this event perfectly blends both celebrations.
After four years of partnership, Halfway Toyota George is honored to be the main sponsor of the 2024 Heritage Tour. Hereʼs to a fantastic journey filled with joy and camaraderie.
Safe travels and enjoy the tour!
Winter’s chill couldn’t dampen the spirit as members gathered for one of our most treasured traditions: the annual SCOCC Potjiekos feast at “die BENZ.” Though the morning air bit with icy sharpness, the warmth of friendship and the promise of culinary indulgence made the gathering feel like a midsummer celebration.
The day began at first light, as veteran chefs Pierre Fourie and Kobus Harris, joined by their skilled sous-chefs, took charge of preparing the centerpiece of the event: a whole lamb, paired with an array of fresh, vibrant vegetables. Their culinary expertise transformed simple ingredients into something extraordinary, while the comforting aroma of sizzling lamb filled the crisp morning air. A well-timed glass of sherry added a touch of warmth, helping ward off the lingering chill.
Adding a dash of excitement to the occasion, Chris Kühn bravely donned the chef’s hat and for the first time, crafting his debut oxtail potjie—a true masterpiece that would soon have everyone raving.
As the morning stretched into midday, members began arriving, their laughter and chatter creating a lively atmosphere. Stories of classic cars and shared memories echoed through the space, accompanied by the cheerful clinking of glasses and plates. It was more than just a gathering—it was a celebration of community and camaraderie.
When the moment finally arrived to taste the fruits of our collective efforts, the feast exceeded every expectation. Each dish was a testament to the skill and passion poured into its preparation. Though our appetites were hearty, the portions proved even heartier, leaving us with an abundance of food. In the spirit of generosity, the extra was donated to a local shelter, ensuring the day’s joy extended beyond our gathering to those in need.
As the festivities drew to a close, Waldo, our ever-enthusiastic club leader, took a moment to express heartfelt gratitude to all who made the day possible. He acknowledged the SCOCC for hosting, the chefs for their culinary brilliance, and every member for their contributions to the event’s success. To honor the dedication of Pierre, Kobus, and Chris, Waldo presented each of them with a special token of appreciation: a bottle of 12-year-old Bells whiskey—a fitting tribute to the craftsmanship they displayed.
By the end of the day, it was clear this was more than just an event. It was a reflection of who we are as clubs—a family bound by a love of classic cars, fine food, and a shared spirit of generosity. As we packed away the pots and bid our farewells, our hearts were full, already looking forward to the next time we would gather under the SCOCC banner.

It is with heavy hearts, but many fond memories, that we bade farewell to one of the original SCOCC members, Manie Rademeyer. Paralysed in a Rhodesian landmine blast in 1976, Manie was confined to a wheelchair – but his enthusiasm and can-do attitude knew no bounds.
Manie and his wife, Wendy, were among the small group of people who first met to discuss the establishment of the SCOCC. Manie subsequently became member no. 6, and was an eager participant at many Club outings and events.
Soon after the Club was established, its first old car rally was launched. Manie was no stranger to speed-rally driving, having previously won a Rhodesian Clubman class as Best Driver, despite his disability. Wendy at the wheel, the husband-and-wife team entered the inaugural CP Nel Delta Rally - their first rally as a couple. They were delighted (and very surprised) to win the event in Manie’s very first restoration, a 1936 Chev Master Sedan.
Several years later, Manie entered a SCOCC rally with Neville Mayhew as his navigator. Neville was an amputee, and the team drew much attention and admiration for their determination and camaraderie. One newspaper reporter made special mention of the fact that they only had one good leg between them!
When the first Old Car Show was discussed at Paul and Leo Fick’s farm in Victoria Bay, Manie was there. And when it was put on at the George Riding Club, he and Wendy spent the weekend at the show, sleeping on a double bed in the back of his 1948 Chev Panel Van.
During a SCOCC visit to his workshop in Market Street, Knysna, Manie enthusiastically shared his collection of restored and project cars. He also showed members how he turned damaged, scratched and partly rusted metal dashboards into beautiful works of art - indistinguishable from genuine woodgrain.
