From the Desk of the President

Imagine being on a ship in the Bermuda triangle without a captain on the bridge ! We’ve already seen an increase in numbers at our gatherings and I’m sure this trend will continue during forthcoming events which we should be able to arrange on a more regular basis. Allow me to put my treasurers hat on and remind members that membership fees ( R200) are due on 1 July 2022. Quite a number of our members are in arrears so this is the opportunity to clear your name !

CHAIRMAN’S NATTER Dear Fellow Members It is my great honour and privilege to address you in my new capacity as Chairman of the Southern Cape Old Car Club. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Committee and all members for entrusting me with the leadership of our prestigious Club. I thank outgoing Chairman Mike Alexander for his years of passionate leadership and for steering the Club through the tumultuous pandemic time. I also welcome new Committee members Philip Kuschke (Vice-Chairman) and Kobus Mostert (Youth Co-ordinator). I look forward to serving our Club alongside my fellow Committee members, and I assure you of my commitment to maintaining the superb standards synonymous with the SCOCC. George Old Car Show – Silver Jubilee Celebration After two years of Covid-related disappointments and uncertainties, the 25th George Old Car Show was a great success. Representing the main sponsor, Scribs Benzeum, René and I were delighted to welcome and share in the excitement of approximately 8000 visitors over the weekend of 12th and 13th February. We had 1000 entries to the show and it was simply wonderful to experience the camaraderie along with the tangible relief of life getting back to normal. Special thanks go to Alewijn Dippenaar as show organiser, Mimi Finestone as media co-ordinator, along with everyone who helped with the many arrangements that made the weekend such a success – and with limited time to organise! To all SCOCC members who helped and contributed in various ways, those who displayed their cars, as well as other clubs’ members and privateers who entered their cars, we are immensely grateful for your time, effort and support. We also thank all the dealerships that participated as well as our auctioneer, Wayne van der Klashorst from Traders Auctions. The Road Ahead We are genuinely excited to be back on track as far as our get-togethers are concerned and we encourage you to join us at any (or all) of our monthly events: 1. Every 1st Saturday - Classic Cars & Coffee @ die BENZ, with drive out to local eatery for brunch. 2. Every last Sunday – Bonnets Up @ die BENZ. Fires ready at 12h00. 3. A technical/garage evening once a month. 4. An outing once a month. Should you wish to volunteer, or have any ideas for events, please contact our Events Co-ordinator Jan van Deventer. Once again, I thank you for the opportunity to serve as Chairman – a role I wholeheartedly embrace with the support of my amazing wife (and fellow enthusiast) René. We both hope to see you soon! Kind Regards

FROM THE EDITOR

Silver seems to be the Color of the Year! The 25th (Silver anniversary) Southern Cape Old Car Show of 2022, driven by Scribbs Benzeum was without a doubt one of the most successful car show’s George has seen and experienced. A big thank you to all sponsors, show committee, exhibitors and visitors making the show unforgettable. The Borgward club celebrated their 61st birthday at the George Old Car Show, showcasing 38 beautiful variants of Borgward models. Congratulations to the Borgward team. It has been awhile since The Porsche Club of Eastern Cape exhibited their Porches at the show. There were 15 different models on display, from an early 365 C model, 911’s, to the latest Macan S. We look forward to the 2023 Southern Cape Old Car Show, and trust that all Porsche Clubs of Southern Africa will come and showcase their cars. Congratulations to our newly elected SCOCC Chairman, Waldo Scribante, new Committee members and Phillip Kuschke (Vice Chairman) and Kobus Mostert. With the 1st quarter of the this year nearly over, and with the national state of disaster terminated, time has come to get on with our lives and dust of your classic cars. George (Garden Route) – February 2022 Being on the road in and around the Southern Cape centre of George in the days leading up to its favourite gathering of special cars and their proud proprietors, can only be described as petrolhead heaven. The influx of beautifully preserved old cars, motorbikes, bakkies, tractors and military vehicles was evident as these machines converged upon the Garden Route from near and far. Vintage cars were joined on the N2’s George approaches by hot-rods, street-rods, modified cars and other lightning-fast representatives of modern fleets, either making their way on own steam or the back of humongous car carriers, all roads leading to the meticulously laid out showgrounds at Eden Technical High School. The Southern Cape Old Car Club’s flagship annual event, George Old Car Show (GOCS) celebrated its 25th anniversary with great fanfare in perfect weather for an outdoors affair of such magnitude. The Silver Jubilee milestone featured 2,000 engines of an incredible variety, also including stationary engines and model cars. During the two show days on February 12 and 13, around 8,000 visitors entered through the gates for their tasty, racy slice of the action. Entry tickets were sold for different time slots of the day, which meant that the organising committee and their army of helpers were always on top of crowd control and that everyone inside the school’s vast grounds could enjoy the displays, stalls, demonstrations and drive-bys while keeping a safe distance from fellow motor fans. And for latecomers who missed the boat once tickets were sold out, a great consolation was that the event was streamed live, from the official opening on Saturday morning through to general pans of displays and a multitude of interviews with special car owners being broadcast to an appreciative online audience.

Among those who welcomed the Saturday’s first set of show-goers were Waldo and René Scribante of George Old Car Show premier partners, SCRIBS BENZeum, that served as venue for social events leading up to and during the weekend. Among the gatherings hosted at this unique venue was a spit braai to conclude the Zesto’s Café Vet Tour, participants of which had joined their Kalk Bay colleagues for a memorable road trip in the week preceding the show. Along with SCRIBS BENZeum as premier partner, the success of GOCS 2022 is also due to the contribution of supporting partners Protea Hotel by Marriott King George, SAB, ClickOnIt, George Municipality, en George Herald. In his opening address, GOCS chairman Alewijn Dippenaar thanked not only his 35-strong committee of Southern Cape Old Car Club members, but also the gents and ladies who had fulfilled that role during the past quarter century of shows presented with aplomb. From the first gathering in the late 90s on Paul and Leonora Fick’s farm overlooking Victoria Bay, the show had grown exponentially each year. And this year’s fully subscribed event would not have been as successful without the groundwork done by previous generations of old car lovers. Kudos are due to Dippenaar and his crew and all of those who preceded them, so contributing to the roaring success of this weekend’s George Old Car Show. Visit www.scocc.co.za for details of the Southern Cape Old Car Club, click on https://bit.ly/3sGV6LN for coverage of the weekend’s GOCS, and follow them on Facebook for more photos and feedback. A FESTIVAL OF CARS We all know that the month of February is the month of love! However, here in the Western Cape it is also the month for the love of cars, rather old than new, ...very old! Every second weekend in February the Southern Cape Old Car Club hosts the ever-popular George Old Car Show. This year celebrated the 25th anniversary of the show. This celebration had to be postponed for a year due to Covid-19 regulations preventing the show from taking place in 2021. Philip Kuschke has organised the 17th VetTour this year, which takes place each year on the Friday before the George Old Car Show. The well-known Kalk Bay Veteran Run has been running for a number of years in Cape Town, organised by the Crankhandle Club. Many old car enthusiasts have travelled many thousands of kilometres to participate in these three events, with this year being no exception. It is quite convenient to be able to participate in all three events, or a week of “old car mania”, when coming from far away, making the effort worthwhile. However, there was still a gap with a few idle days between the Kalk Bay Veteran Run and the VetTour and recently a decision was made to use these days to drive from Cape Town to where the VetTour starts. I have participated in the Kalk Bay Run as a passenger once before which was followed a year later by a drive in a car kindly loaned by Hilton Franz in 2020. During this trip I trailered my 1926 Model T Ford down to Cape Town and joined the group driving back to George with our old cars. Peter Truter of the Crankhandle Club organised this trip which attracted about ten cars. The joy of being able to drive our cars for virtually the whole week was a memorable occasion. After some interruption due to Covid-19, I wanted to participate in the 2022 Kalk Bay Veteran Run again, possibly as a passenger, as my 1926 T falls outside of the veteran category. Towing a car to Cape Town has always resulted in a logistical nightmare to get enough drivers willing to drive to Cape Town and bring your tow rig back to George. So, this year I decided to drive to Cape Town in my 1926 T over a three-day period, complete the Kalk Bay run, and then return with the other fellow participants in our old cars to Calitzdorp, where the 2022 Zesto Café VetTour would start, ending at the George Old Car Show. The idea of driving to Cape Town in my Model T sparked some interest from Philip Kuschke, Ockert vd Berg and Kevin Casey, but they suggested we do the trip in two, instead of three days. After some planning of routes, the four of us met in Great Brak River on Friday 4 February. Ali v Jaarsveld also joined us, towing her 1907 Model S Ford. The first leg of our journey took us to Bredasdorp mostly on back roads to avoid the busy N2.

On Saturday morning Leon Oelofse also joined our convoy, towing his 1911 Model T Torpedo. After brunch at Baardskeerdersbos, we continued along the scenic coastal route via Hermanus and Gordon’s Bay and then along Baden Powell Drive to the Crankhandle Club’s clubhouse in Wynberg. The usual hospitality of the Crankhandle Club was enjoyed on Saturday evening with a braai and a talk by Dave Alexander on his London to Brighton trip. On Sunday the memorable Kalk Bay Veteran Run took place. This year the Kalk Bay Veteran Run attracted 21 entries. For me the most special cars that participated were the 1901 Benz, the 1902 Wolseley and Ali v Jaarsveld’s 1907 Model S Ford. A 1914 Douglas motorcycle was also one of the entrants. Harvey Metcalf did some fancy organising which resulted in me and my wife, Amanda driving Philip Kuschke’s 1915 Model T while he and his wife, Rosita drove Greg Bjorkman’s 1916 T. As usual, the Kalk Bay Veteran Run is an absolute blast. This year has motivated me enough to ensure that I complete my 1916 Model T Ford restoration project in time to allow me to participate in my own car. Following the Kalk Bay Veteran Run we drove to Wellington on Monday 7 February to spend the Tuesday exploring the surrounds with André Wessels as our guide. With a contingent of nine Model T Fords and a Model A, we visited a number of interesting places including the Franschhoek Motor Museum. On Wednesday we departed for an overnight stop in Montagu, where some members of the Crankhandle Club joined us. This trip took us over the spectacular Du Toits Kloof Pass. On Thursday we departed from Montagu in a fairly large convoy to Calitzdorp for the start of the 2022 Zesto Café VetTour. On this leg we traversed the long and steep Huis River Pass just before Calitzdorp. On Thursday 10 February we met the regular participants that travel thousands of kilometres to participate in the VetTour from all over the country every year at Café@ the Rose for a meet & greet and a great dinner. On Friday the 2022 Zesto Café VetTour departed after breakfast with a contingent of 22 beautiful cars and traversed the Robinson’s Pass and continued along the coastal route to a lunch stop at the Zesto Café at the George Meander and later ended at the show venue. The fantastic 2022 Zesto Café VetTour culminated in a spitbraai at the SCOCC clubhouse, sponsored by SCRIBS BENZeum. The four Model T Fords which left George on Friday 4 February covered a distance of just on 1500 km from George to Cape Town and back. Two flat tyres, a dirty commutator and a thirsty radiator was the only trouble on the entire route, if you can call it trouble! This trip was so much fun that it will most likely become an annual event where we can really drive and enjoy our cars. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the following: The Crankhandle Club for organising the ever-popular Kalk Bay Veteran Run. Harvey Metcalf for organising a ride for us and also the accommodation in Montagu. Andre Wessels for organising an exciting day trip around Wellington. Philip Kuschke for organising the annual Zesto Café VetTour on behalf of the Southern Cape Old Car Club. Southern Cape Old Car Club for organising the annual George Old Car Show. Waldo and René Scribante hosting the spitbraai at the SCOCC clubhouse. Phillip Rosser Model T Ford Club of South Africa

Japie Van Rooyen (Jnr)

Bonnets Up Every last Sunday of the month @ 11h00

Please do make a special effort to attend these very special get togethers when next we have the opportunity to do so and also bear in mind that our female companions are more than welcome to attend as well. What better way is there to start a Saturday morning. Hope to see you all there. Best Wishes,

CAR DETAILING In excess of 20 members were honoured to be welcomed by Deon, Sonja, their two sons Dwayne and Dylan as well as Dwayne’s wife Dominique and their daughter Ezri, to this evening’s get together. Dwayne entertained us all by giving a thorough demonstration on how to transform a dull set of wheels to a shining and most desirable possession.

I take pleasure in introducing you to the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC). Founded in 1988, our club is affiliated to the South African Veteran and Vintage Association (SAVVA) which, in turn, is affiliated to Motorsport South Africa (MSA) – the governing body that oversees and controls all motorsport activities in South Africa. One of our main goals is the preservation of our motoring history, as well as creating public awareness of this rich history. Pierre Olivier Toer voorsitter 082 8726456

CHAIRMAN’S CHATTER In the July 2020 Chairman’s Chatter, the following was written: “COVID -19 is forcing us to seriously reconsider our priorities” and “It will be wonderful to once again be able to return to “normal,” the familiar”. Well, I truly think that we are very close to the “familiar normal” if we look at the following events that have already taken place during the beginning of 2022.

Dis ‘n groot mylpaal! If I can go back to my opening statement that “COVID-19 is forcing us to seriously reconsider our priorities.” What does it mean? Well, do not procrastinate. “Do what you want to do now.” To-morrow might just be too late. There are so many uncertainties in life. We are all ageing … the petrol price is rising almost monthly, COVID-19 is still a reality, and Boy O Boy, the Russians are making things very difficult for the rest of the world! Please reconsider your old car/ old bike prior-ities. Attend your club functions, enter the rally that you have dreamt of and please attend the old car show where you meet so many wonderful friends. Be kind to all your club members – we need each other to fully enjoy our motoring heritage. We are looking forward to all the future events like the Air and Old Car Show hosted by the Queenstown Automobile Club in Queenstown to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Tiger Moth planes on 1 May; the 12th Century Run organised by the Classic Motorcycle Club of Natal; the Na-tional Austin Healey Tour; the Vryheid Old Car Club’s Car Show; the VSCC’s Cars in the Park and so forth - too many to name. Get involved! Please revisit the SAVVA webpage to check for the national SAVVA events. The clubs are truly hard at work to organise these events, but a plea to all members: please get involved before it is too late. Help your fellow club members to make a success of our old car movement in South-Africa. Remember the uncertainties of life will always be with us. I would like to thank Fred and Aisne, on behalf of all the SAVVA clubs, for their dedication for the past few years as editors of the Auto News – the two of you have done a stunning job in compiling the newsletter. Sincere thanks for a job well done! SAVVA and its members wish you the best of luck for the future and a speedy recovery for Aisne. We keep you both in our prayers. For the time being, Chris Cardwell of Pietermaritzburg, will assist Fred and Ainse in compiling the Auto News. We are excited to have you on board. A friendly request to all clubs: Please send your reports on all the wonder ful events and happenings at your club to the editor. Keep the OLD wheels rolling ... Regards Philip Kuschke March 2022
