From the Chairman
Dear Members of the Southern Cape Old Car Club, As another year draws to a close, I am once again compelled to reflect upon my experiences, thoughts, and emotions regarding something that holds such a profound place in my heart. It’s a challenge to find the precise words to encapsulate the depth of my feelings for our beloved club. When I cast my mind back over this swiftly passing year, I am overwhelmed with inspiration. The multitude of splendid events and convivial gatherings we’ve relished as members of the Southern Cape Old Car Club has left an indelible mark. Celebrating our club’s 35th Anniversary was a momentous milestone that we commemorated in grand style. The triumph of the 25th Annual George Old Car Show, accompanied by the exhilarating Vettoer, set the bar high for the year. Another unforgettable highlight was the 11th Erfenistoer in the Overberg, narrowly avoiding the severe flooding that afflicted the Western Cape over the Heritage weekend. Being part of such an esteemed club means being enveloped by a reservoir of expertise, ardor, and companionship, for which I am immensely thankful. Looking ahead to 2024, we’re already in the preliminary stages of planning for the 2024 George Old Car Show. I extend a heartfelt invitation to our club members to volunteer and contribute their support during the event; your participation will be greatly valued and appreciated. To our cherished SCOCC family, René and I extend our warmest wishes for a joyous and blessed festive season. May the approaching year, 2024, embrace you with robust health, unbridled happiness, and unwavering hope. We eagerly anticipate a splendid year ahead, filled with shared experiences and camaraderie. Warm Regards

GERMAN-THEMED OLD CAR SHOW WILL OOMPAH GEORGE INTO AUTOMOTIVE ACTION Mimi Finestone George, Garden Route (December 2023) A diverse crowd with a singular goal in common gathered at Protea by Marriott Hotel King George last Friday morning to launch the George Old Car Show 2024 over a scrumptious breakfast spread. At the mic during the event were tour veterans and other old-car acolytes alike. Representing show founders the Southern Cape Old Car Club and aptly decked out in lederhosen and related garb was Dr Waldo Scribante, who started off proceedings with a brief history of the event, and an announcement that next year’s GOCS on February 10 & 11 will boast a distinct German feel. One of the 2024 show’s unique attractions will be an oompah band on the Sunday, but Waldo also alluded to a possible sneak-preview performance on the Saturday. And not surprisingly, both show days will see a special focus on German marques such as Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and BMW in models old and new. “We will bring some festive German cheer to the 27th George Old Car Show, and at the same time celebrate the Southern Cape Old Car Club’s 35th anniversary during what has become our annual flagship event,” he said. He reminded guests – including George mayor Leon van Wyk along with representatives of car dealerships and various local and national media channels – of how SCOCC members held the first event at Paul Fick’s farm in 1987; by 2004, it had grown into the second biggest car show in the country. “George Old Car Show has been held every second weekend in February ever since, except when Covid-19 prevented it in 2021. This year, approximately 12,000 people attended the show, and in 2024 we would like to make it even more enjoyable for every exhibitor, stallholder and guest at the Eden Technical High School showgrounds,” said Waldo. First citizen Leon van Wyk shared his team’s regard for the importance of tourism in George and elsewhere on the Garden Route, and lauded GOCS organisers for having created an “anchor event” in the town. “Thank you for the way this event has been built over the years into the major attraction it is today,” he said. The mayor reiterated the importance of events that attract foreign tourists in a post-Covid world, and that offer such an alluring package that both national and overseas visitors extend their stay. He also announced the development of new collaborative efforts with provincial government and tourism bodies to reach this objective. “A few days ago, Wesgro announced its collaboration with global organisations to structure flight and accommodation packages into George from Cape Town. Also, as recently approved by the Western Cape cabinet, an improved growth strategy called G4J (Growth for Jobs) will work towards almost doubling our GDP by 2025.” Next to take up the mic was GOCS chairman Alewijn Dippenaar – an old hand when it comes to riling up audiences while sharing his respect for old cars and their crafty conservers. He praised the three-pronged objective of SCOCC members to collect, restore, and exhibit. But actually, he said, the show is “all about relationships”. “In the old-car industry there are three distinct categories: ‘before my time’, ‘when I was young’, and ‘of the now’ – the relationship with cars by the generation born after 1970. But unlike our ever-changing human years, cars have fixed eras. For instance, the dates for the vintage-car category, built between 1 January 1919 and 31 December 1930, will never change.” Press release on behalf of Southern Cape Old Car Club: interface by goji mimi finestone | mimi@gojipr.net | +27 84 583 3144
GERMAN-THEMED OLD CAR SHOW WILL OOMPAH GEORGE INTO AUTOMOTIVE ACTION Mimi Finestone A comprehensive explanation followed during which Alewijn’s formula demonstrated that, taking a top average age of 80 years as benchmark, there will soon be very few people alive to tell true-life stories of their relationships with old cars. “In 27 years from today, most of the old-car industry generation that could claim ‘in my time’ will be gone.” By 2040 another generation will have passed, and in 2050 those who experienced the 60s era will be gone. By 2050, people will only say be able to say “before my time” – and this, said Alewijn, leaves us with “living the now” as only other category. “So it is super great to have new car dealers with us today, ready to participate in the show.” The world asks for innovation and creativity, concluded Alewijn, adding that the GOCS 2024 will need to strategically marry ‘before my time’ and ‘living the now’ to ensure the future interest, passion and involvement of new generations. “This is the great difference that the SCOOC is making with George Old Car Show: ensuring that cars built before 1970 is relevant to future generations. It is the club’s legacy project to ensure a continued passion for old cars, and to remember our relationship with these cars through storytelling and the great camaraderie enjoyed at each year’s Old Car Show.” A final word went to SAVVA (Southern African Vintage and Veteran Association) chairman Philip Kuschke, who congratulated fellow SCOCC members for having built the event up into such a dynamic affair. “George Old Car Show is all but static – you can see how stationary engines work, buy the maize meal ground and witness water being pumped. Bikes and tractors and cars of all shapes and sizes drive past at intervals during both days, and it’s also the show in the country where the most veteran and Noah cars are being exhibited.” Philip will be steering the Vet Tour, which kicks off on the Thursday before show weekend, for the 19th time next year. Find out everything you need to know about this veteran-car cruise, as well as registration and other details of GOCS 2024, by clicking on www.scocc.co.za. Maar anders as ons immer aflopende Press release on behalf of Southern Cape Old Car Club: interface by goji mimi finestone | mimi@gojipr.net | +27 84 583 3144
GERMAN-THEMED OLD CAR SHOW WILL OOMPAH GEORGE INTO AUTOMOTIVE ACTION Mimi Finestone mensejare, het motors vaste eras. ORIGINS OF THE VETTOER GEORGE, SOUTH AFRICA – The VETTOER was established thanks to the famous George Old Car Show (GOCS). During the final throes of 2004, several members of the Crankhandle Club in Cape Town conceived the idea of driving their vintage cars from Cape Town to George, to attend the show before driving back. What a daring decision! Philip Kuschke – today serving as SAVVA (Southern African Vintage and Veteran Association) chairman – then took the initiative to encourage members of the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC) to meet their Cape Town counterparts at Groot Brak River with their vintage cars on the Friday before the show. Excitement ran high as the combined touring group, comprising members of the SCOCC and Crankhandle Club, entered George with show banners on their cars to promote the 2005 George Old Car Show. This is when the plan to organise an annual one-day tour before the show took flight. The SCOCC committee supported this initiative, seeing the tour as part of their pre-show promotion. The next challenge was to decide which vehicles would be targeted to participate in this tour. It was evident that tours for Veteran and Vintage vehicles were not readily available in South Africa and, what’s more, these vehicles were not as frequently featured at vintage car shows anymore. The problem was resolved: To increase the presence of these old vehicles at the event, collectors were motivated to dust off their Veteran or Vintage cars to join the tour and attend the George Old Car Show. The target group was set to all vehicles manufactured before or on December 31, 1931. In 2006, the first official VETTOER was organised by Philip Kuschke, the number of participants surpassing all expectations: Prins Albert was invaded by no fewer than 14 Veteran and Vintage vehicles overnight. On the Friday afternoon, the sisters from a nearby church served tea, coffee, and the customary ‘koesisters’ and milk tart to the participants in Meiringspoort – what a feast! A winning recipe The first VETTOER was undoubtedly a resounding success and undeniably added significant value to the 2006 George Old Car Show – a winning recipe indeed. Its ingredients? On the Thursday evening before the show, participants usually gather in a town near George, such as Prins Albert, Uniondale, Klaarstroom, Albertinia or even Vleesbaai, where they enjoy each other’s company. On Friday morning, everyone has breakfast together and then the tour begins, typically spanning about 170km and ending in George, followed by the George Old Car Show on the Saturday and Sunday. From 2005 to the present day, the VETTOER is offered annually as part of the George Old Car Show. Participants from all over South Africa and even overseas attend the tour and show. The 17th VETTOER took place on February 10 & 11, 2023, from Klaarstroom to George and was once again a great success, with 20+ entries from across the country. Twenty-two old vintage vehicles and two vintage motorcycles participated in the 2023 VETTOER, the latter undoubtedly adding great value to the tour. It would be fantastic if we could welcome many more from the motorcycle brigade in 2024. The antique vehicles and motorcycles come from all over the country, as far as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Middelburg (Cape), Pietersburg, and Harrismith. Vehicles that truly turned heads in 2023 were the 1912 Rover, 1908 Model S Ford, 1921 Rolls Royce, the 1926 Hubmobile, and the 1913 Benz. The 10 Model T Fords that formed part of the fleet also greatly captured the public’s attention.
Ford’s Southern African Legacy – Iconic cars through the decades By Wilhelm Lutjeharms

The Ford Capri Perana, with its V8 engine, dominated South Africa’s Group 5 racing in the 1970s The Ford Cortina bakkie, Springbok edition, showed support for the Springbok team during the 1976 All Blacks tour The Ford Sierra XR8, a true South African muscle car, featured a 5.0-litre V8 engine from the Ford Mustang Ford introduced modern classics in the 1990s and 2000s, including performance models like the Ford ST and RS family, and the legendary Ford Mustang in 2015
PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, 25 October 2023 – Ford South Africa has developed and launched several iconic cars for local enthusiasts over the decades. Many of these developments have been unique to the South African market, building the Ford brand and heritage on our local roads and racetracks. Ford has a rich history in South Africa, and a legacy of always being in tune with local appetites and trends. So much so that Ford has commissioned and developed many vehicles unique to South Africa, many of these to defend Ford’s True Blue legendary status on local racetracks, and others to fill gaps uniquely found on the local motoring landscape. Ford Capri Perana – 1970 The late Basil Green is synonymous with not only the Ford Capri Perana, but also many other Fords from the 1960s and ’70s found on our roads and racetracks. The Perana was a locally developed vehicle that aligned with Ford’s global commitment to its “Total Performance” advertising campaign from the period, and the road cars were officially available through Ford dealerships across the country. The Capri Perana was particularly renowned for its dominance in South Africa’s Group 5 racing, especially during the 1970 season. That year, Bobby Olthoff, with his Capri Perana V8 Gunston-livery car number Z181, won 13 out of the 14 races. The Capri Perana is unique in that it is the only Ford factory-sanctioned Capri that was ever fitted with a V8 engine. Here the 5.0-litre Windsor V8 from the Mustang did an impressive job of seeing off the competition. CAR magazine tested one of the road cars at the time and achieved an impressive 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 6.7 seconds. Both four-speed manual and three-speed automatic transmissions were available to buyers, although today collectors tend to prefer the manual version over the automatic. The Capri Perana was identified by its larger wheels and double exhaust pipes, to name but two upgrades. In a car tipping the scales at just below 1 100 kg, with 210kW and 407Nm on tap, the performance was truly overwhelming at the time. The two official exterior body colours were Bright Yellow and Piri Piri Red. Likely because of its on-track success, it turned out to be a hit with the public as well, with Basil Green Motors shifting around 500 road cars. The company also produced Perana versions of the Escort, Cortina and Granada in the Sixties and early Seventies.

Ford Cortina Mk3 bakkie – 1971 Enthusiasts will remember that a few years after the Cortina bakkie was unveiled, Ford released a limited-edition Cortina bakkie and sedan known as the Springbok edition. These vehicles, painted green and gold, left no doubt about their purpose: showing support for the Springbok team during the 1976 All Blacks tour of South Africa. Both the sedan and the bakkie featured a gold painted roof and wheels with a pin stripe running along the side of the vehicles. The rest of the car was painted green. The success of the original Cortina bakkie has also proven to be the genesis of the word bakkie in motoring, which is still used by all South Africans to refer to any type of light utility pick-up. The Cortina bakkie idea was then carried over to the Mk4 and 5 versions of the Cortina and it proved to be an exceptionally tough vehicle, with some of them still seen to this day plying their trade.
Ford Cortina XR6 Interceptor – 1981 A performance version of the MK4 Cortina, named the 3.0S, was developed by Ford’s Motorsport division in the late 1970s. It was fitted with the 3.0-litre “Essex” V6 and had uprated and slightly lowered suspension, among other improvements. This car evolved into the better-known Mk5 Cortina XR6. An iconic Ford print ad at the time for the XR6 said: “Buckle in for the drive of your life.”
Celebrating its motorsport successes, the company produced a Team Ford, or “TF”, edition of the Cortina XR6 with distinctive blue pin striping, however, the ultimate development of the Cortina range came in the form of the legendary XR6 Interceptor, another homologation special to allow Ford to go racing. Painted Wild Coral Red, this model stood out from all other Cortina models, replete with its shading slats over the rear window, the small black boot spoiler and the double, four-spoke wheels. If other drivers saw the car approaching in their rear-view mirrors, there was no mistaking it for anything else on the road. Each car’s number was also individually printed at the bottom of the C-pillar and corresponded with the chassis plate. As with all homologation specials, one of the stand-out features was the engine. The Interceptor’s 3.0-litre V6 featured a set of triple downdraft 42 Weber carburettors and new high-performance exhaust manifolds. One of the internal upgrades to the engine was a more aggressive camshaft. The result was 118kW, a healthy increase over the standard 101kW Essex V6 engines. To aid handling, wider Ronal 13-inch wheels were fitted to these cars. Further suspension upgrades rounded out the package.

Ford Sierra XR8 – 1984 The Sierra XR8 was another distinctive South African model, widely regarded as a true South African muscle car. The aim of the XR8 was to develop a production car that Ford could take to the racetrack, taking on other competitors for the Group One crown. For that to happen, at least 200 cars needed to be sold, and the race car had to be based on a production car, making it a true homologation special. The 5.0-litre V8 engine came from none other than Ford’s halo performance car at the time, the Ford Mustang. The engine was bolted to a Borg Warner five-speed manual gearbox and a Borg Warner differential. It developed 161kW and 374Nm, breathing through a four-barrel Holley Carburettor. The side shafts as well as the drive shaft were upgraded to deal with the additional power. Ford also upgraded the suspension and braking system to harness the additional power and torque. The purposeful Ronal alloy wheels, specially designed and manufactured for the XR8, came from Germany. All XR8s were painted white with Ford Motorsport-inspired blue stripes, while the lower panels were finished in grey-blue moulded PVC. One of the most notable design elements of the road car was the double-plane rear wing – an element that was not only visible from a distance, but left the driver and fellow road users in no doubt as to the intent of the most-powerful production Sierra in South Africa. Including prototypes, just more than 250 were manufactured. Another external cue unique to the XR8 was a slatted grille, providing more airflow to cool the big V8. Nowhere else was the Sierra officially sold with a V8 engine, making these cars highly sought after by Ford enthusiasts all over the world. During its final years the Sierra XR8 was raced by Willie Hepburn in the WesBank Modified series. The car quickly earned the nickname “The Animal” and went on to secure an unforgettable win at the old Kyalami circuit in 1987. Official performance testing at the time revealed an impressive 0 to 100 km/h time of only 6.95 seconds, and a top speed of 231 km/h, making the Sierra XR8 South Africa’s fastest standard four-door production car at the time. Modern classics Vehicles from the 1990s and 2000s are now often referred to as modern classics, with their values steadily rising. In this era, Ford re-introduced cherished performance cars to the South African market, which encompassed various hot hatches and the highly anticipated Ford Mustang. Ford ST and RS family To cover the more affordable end of the performance market, Ford introduced the first Focus ST in 2003. It was based on the first-generation Focus and named the ST170, after the number of horsepower the engine developed. The first Fiesta ST, the ST150, was introduced a few years later. Both these models were instantly loved by South Africa’s motoring enthusiasts. The three-door, front-wheel drive ST170 was fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine developing 126kW and 195Nm. The more compact and lighter Fiesta ST’s naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine produced 112kW and 190Nm. Both these cars were renowned for their handling capabilities, with many an enthusiast still to this day waxing lyrical about their crisp turn-in. The next-generation Focus ST was offered with the iconic 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo petrol engine

developing 166kW and 320Nm. This ST was offered in both a three-door and five-door style to tempt South African buyers. Ford further developed the 2.5-litre turbocharged engine and the result was the Focus RS. It offered 224kW and 440Nm and was sold in limited numbers in South Africa. The RS featured Ford’s RevoKnuckle suspension setup as well as a Quaife limited slip differential. Subsequently, Ford transitioned to four-cylinder turbo engines for the final local performance iterations of the Focus. The five-door ST’s 2.0-litre developed 184kW and 360Nm, decisively powering this hot hatch. Turbocharging was used in the performance version of the Fiesta for the first time too, with the 1.6-litre engine developing 134kW and 240Nm. Locally, Ford’s swansong for the ST and RS models came in the shape of the all-wheel drive Focus RS with its 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivering 257kW and 440Nm. This meant the RS was now firmly in the super – or hyper – hatch territory. As CAR magazine accurately observed at the time: “The RS badge, past and present, has been as widely lauded for its bang-for-buck value and its giant-slaying ability.” The Fiesta ST200 saw the introduction of a more powerful version of the base ST, with outputs increased to 147kW and 240Nm. This little pocket-rocket is known for its playful and dynamic nature, and has become a true icon in the high-performance Fiesta range. Arrival of the fabled Ford Mustang Ford has launched iconic performance models throughout the decades, but the cherry on top arguably arrived in 2015 with the introduction of the long-awaited and legendary Ford Mustang. This was the first generation of the Mustang to be produced in right-hand drive, thus making it accessible to South African buyers. Since its introduction, it has been one of the best-selling performance cars in South Africa. Introduced with both the 5.0-litre V8 as well as the 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, customers could balance performance and price to suit their needs. Buyers could also choose between Fastback or Convertible and automatic or manual versions. Soon, higher performance versions of both the coupé and the cabriolet were made available to the public, including the special edition Mustangs: Bullitt, Mach 1 and California Special. This neatly complemented the official Shelby versions, built locally by Shelby South Africa, as well as Roush alternatives, in mild to wild flavours and temperaments.
From the early days when legends like Basil Green adeptly tuned classic Fords to the present, where Ford’s high-performance Mustangs and the mighty twin-turbo 292kW Ranger Raptor rule the roost, the company has consistently delivered iconic models to South African enthusiasts throughout the decades. With deep roots in the South African market and racing circuits, Ford is poised to continue crafting and introducing more iconic models long into the future.
