Festival Fun Out and About this Summer
Chislehurst Rocks! Visit Chislehurst Week
WITH MERIDIAN TODAY
HELLO In this issue: We excitedly welcome the start of the festival season, as it kicks off this month with the opening of the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival. As you’ll see in Festival Fun – that’s just the beginning of a whole host of summer fun, right on our doorsteps. Whether music is your thing (Greenwich Music Festival), or your more arty and crafty (CrossFest), perhaps food and drink tickles you (Picnic with the ParkFEST crew), or you’re just up for having fun and enjoying summer locally with like-minded (Lewisham Peoples’ Day) – simply take your pick. Best of all – so many of these festivals are completely free, so make the most of this vibrant part of London we are lucky to call home - and support something local too. In our area focus this month, Nicola Berry is out and about in Chislehurst - meeting up with the Visit Chislehurst team, Nicola learns more about the charming Visit Chislehurst Week and what you can expect this year. It’s going to be a hot summer, so you will want to keep cool - and in style… In interiors we explore the pastel palette to enhance that summer look. If it’s shade you need, we’ve sourced shutters and curtains options, and looked into clever lighting and cool flooring choices, to keep you comfortable all summer long. In food & drink we catch up on what’s opening in the local area and new food events, as well as revisit an old favourite. Plus there’s a meal for four up for grabs as well as a romantic meal for two to win. Meanwhile in health and beauty we take a look at how to achieve that summer smile – all year round, where to grab your sunnies from and how best to take care of your skin. If festivals really aren’t your thing, remember there are plenty more events and all manner of things taking place, all over the local area, throughout June in our listings guide.

Cruise ship, Viking Star made an early morning arrival to Greenwich last month, as part of her maiden voyage. With a gross tonnage of only 47,800 tons, the Viking Star is officially classed as a ‘small ship’ and is dwarfed by recent new cruise launches, but her size enables the ship to reach the heart of great cities such as London. The ship will make a return visit to Greenwich in October.
Winning artwork to be displayed on London Underground The Association of Illustrators (AOI) and London Transport Museum have selected the winner of the Prize for Illustration 2015, from over one thousand entries worldwide. SABMiller buys local Brewer Meantime Drinks giant, SABMiller has agreed to acquire localbased craft brewer Meantime Brewing Company, which should be completed this month. SABMiller plans to grow sales of Meantime’s beers nationally and possible export to Europe.
All of the entries, including the three winners, will be on display at London Transport Museum in Covent Garden Piazza until 6 September.
Cutting-edge smart city technologies Two smart cities innovators, Demand Logic and SEaB Energy, have been selected to pilot their technologies at Canary Wharf after winning the second phase of the Cognicity Challenge. Cognicity is a smart cities accelerator programme designed and delivered by ENTIQ for Canary Wharf Group (CWG). It was established to discover and support the development of future technologies with positive economic, social and environmental impacts. Demand Logic helps businesses to reduce their electricity usage by intelligently monitoring and controlling non-essential electrical outputs, saving money and emissions in the process while SEaB Energy has developed a system, which eliminates the need to transport food waste to distant processing plants by converting it into water and green power onsite. Both companies have been awarded a £50,000 prize alongside the opportunity to implement their technology at Canary Wharf.

Here comes summer. Time for a seasonal make-over Sunlight, don’t you just love its warmth and light that transforms our homes and gardens, but it also has a down side. Stifling heat can make it uncomfortable to be indoors during the day and impossible to sleep at night. Valerie Breese offers some practical solutions...

Kitchens Let a new coat of paint take the heat out of a room. It may be psychological, but cooler colours can create a cool ambience in a room, the same as warm colours can in winter. Watery hues and fluid federal blue have been awash in the design world at the moment. Cool colours, especially shades of blue, can make your home seem fresh, cool and clean during the heat of summer. White walls and cool grey and blue dashes of colour are a popular choice for summer painting projects. Blocking the sunlight from coming into the house by using blinds and drapes can be very effective to cool the house down. Choose white or light fabrics that will reflect the sunlight. Light coloured throws over seating will lift any heat absorbing dark colours and also stop fading and damage to the fabric of the upholstery. Blinds are a great way to filter the light and vertical and Venetian blinds with adjustable louvers that tilt to give you greater control, providing the perfect solution. For many people, full-height shutters are the only choice. It’s a timeless style that looks perfect in the lounge, bedroom, or kitchen and in both contemporary and traditional interiors. You can also decide whether you want the louvres at the top and bottom of each panel to work together or independently, giving you greater control over light and privacy. You may not want heavy drapes in the bedroom during summer but neat blackout roller blinds and linings help to block out the light, making them ideal for getting a good night’s rest. The blinds come in a range of colours and styles to match any décor. Conservatory roof blinds are an ideal solution to the age-old problem of maintaining a comfortable internal temperature through all the seasons. In summer, sunshine will blaze through a conservatory roof; while in winter, heat rises and escapes through the same ceiling. Specialist fabrics can help moderate these extremes, so you can enjoy your conservatory in all conditions. SolarPleat™ fabrics use a performance coating that reflects the sun, actively preventing light from being absorbed in summer while offering an insulating layer in winter. Features such as TruePleat™ and MasterPleat™ technology ensure the pleats remain neat, smart and uniform for years to come. And with a variety of operating systems giving you fingertip control over your environment, opening and closing your conservatory roof blinds is incredibly easy.

The Tories get back in! I feel a little nervous mentioning politics, but putting aside whatever your political persuasions might be, for those of you looking to buy and sell, the conservatives getting back is probably a good thing. This is particularly the case at the upper end of the market where the threat of mansion tax was a worry for buyers. Lets hope the slight nervousness pre-election now evaporates.

Visit Chislehurst Nicola Berry reports on the inaugural Visit Chislehurst Week which takes place this month. A recent survey confirmed what many of us already know i.e. that living in close proximity to a vibrant local high street is one of the most important factors when choosing where to live. How lucky then are those who live in or around picturesque Chislehurst Village, where vibrant local shops dominate the high street and numerous community-based events take place throughout the year. Just loving where you live isn’t enough, however; it’s vitally important to shop locally too. So the inaugural Visit Chislehurst Week, which runs from the 13th - 20th June, is a chance to get out and support local shops and businesses, whilst having a bit of fun in the process. As Clare Herriot, from the Visit Chislehurst website, says: “Having two great annual events (the Summer Fair and Chislehurst Rocks) at each end of this week is a wonderful opportunity to create a real buzz, attract visitors to use our local businesses and enjoy all that Chislehurst has to offer.” In fact the idea of Visit Chislehurst Week was conceived by her colleague Tamsyn Clark and the week-long event promises lots of exciting offers and promotions for adults and children alike. A complete list of all the promotions can be found at www.visitchislehurst.org. You can also download a voucher which you will need to show when redeeming any of the offers. Visit Chislehurst Week kicks off with the annual Summer Fair on Saturday, 13th June. Stalls sell everything from plants and food to hand-made
gifts, whilst a programme of dance displays runs throughout the day. 10.00 am - 4.00 pm. Opposite Prickend Pond (just off the High Street). Anyone for tennis? From the 13th - 20th June, Chislehurst Tennis Club is running a special offer, whereby four players need only pay the £5 guest fee for doubles on Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning or Wednesday morning. Or pay a £1 guest fee for two players (singles). Free individual taster sessions are available on Sunday and Wednesday morning. Don’t miss the 2gether charity shop’s Cupcake & Teaware Event on Saturday, 13th June. On sale will be vintage tea sets, milk jugs and cupcakeinspired goods together with cupcakes (£1) and tea and cake (£2). Dining out? There are special offers at both Côte Brasserie and The Imperial Arms during the week, whilst Linklater & Warren’s Prepare for Summer event is giving a 25% discount off sunglasses. Other offers include 20% off purchases at Ebony & Ivory Interiors, 30% off purchases at Yves Delorme and a 25% discount off All The Arts’ musical theatre summer course.
Rounding off the week on Saturday, 20th June is Chislehurst Rocks, the Village’s very own, free music festival which last year attracted around 5,000 visitors. What’s more, it’s aimed at children and adults of all ages. The day begins at 11 am with fun and games for the whole family and continues until 9 pm. There will be live, original music from a variety of genres, including local band The Dirty Perks, as well as a bar and different food stalls. Are “sugar free” drinks better for our teeth? We all know that the sugars in soft drinks and fruit juice will damage our teeth but is choosing a “sugar free” option better for us? Whilst there are fewer or no calories in the “sugar free” option, the acid content remains the same or in some cases, depending on the sugar substitute used, may be even higher. Fruit juices and soft drinks, even the diet versions, can be highly acidic. British mouths are currently suffering from an epidemic of preventable diseases, including dental erosion caused by acid attack. Acid erosion gradually thins and removes the hard pearly enamel which provides so much of the beauty, strength and comfort of teeth. Enamel loss exposes the underlying darker, softer and sensitive dentine, prematurely ageing our teeth.
Soft drinks and fruit juices are the most common causes of erosion according to a new study published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry. The study which examined the mouths of nearly 4000 people found 79% had dental erosion. The most severe cases were found to be in the mouths of people who drank the greatest quantities of soft drinks and fruit juices. Coincidentally, those with the lowest levels of erosion were those who drank milk instead. Soft drinks and fruit juices are not the only causes of erosion. Any time the pH drops below 5.5, enamel starts to dissolve. Carbonated water is more acidic than still water. Even people on a vegetarian diet can be more prone to erosion when taste is enhanced by acidic flavourings, such as balsamic vinegar on salad. Much damage can also be caused by acid returning to the mouth from the stomach due to gastric reflux or bulimia. Even swimming pools can be a surprising source of erosion if the pH is set too low. So, remember, when you choose the unsweetened or “sugar free” version of a fruit juice or soft drink, this is not always the “healthy” option.

Tempting tapas, perfect pinchos and sangria sips – La Terraza, Ibérica’s entirely al fresco restaurant, is now open for the summer. Bringing a splash of Spanish style to the heart of Canary Wharf, La Terraza delivers a taste of the famous terrace culture of Madrid. The all-day menu is available daily from 10am and is designed by three Michelin-starred executive chef, Nacho Manzano and group head chef, César Garcia, who pay homage to the traditional dishes typically served in Northern Spain. Also available are a selection of artisan Spanish jamónes and cheese to choose from alongside Bocadillos, Spanish sourdough baguettes, which are deep-filled with fried squid with lemon alioli; Ibérico ham with green peppers and tomato; or Spanish cheese, sun blush tomatoes, rocket and basil. Greenwich Tavern is situated on the corner of King William Walk, across from Greenwich Park and within a short walk of the famous Cutty Sark. Being in the heart of Greenwich it can be busy at weekends, so book in advance. On a warm midweek evening its the perfect place to meet up with an old friend. The idyllic setting is perfect for an unhurried evening. The front windows open up and give the front of the bar an al fresco feeling, perfect for people-watching and those seats are really popular. Sitting in the large round-window with views of the park was a great start to the evening. Over large gin and tonics we studied the menu in between catching up. It’s not a long menu but has lots of popular dishes, so doesn’t disappoint. My friend’s mountain of nachos with salsa, sour cream, guacamole and melted cheese haledt conversation for a while, while I enjoyed my second choice of salt and pepper squid with sweet chilli sauce (I just missed out on the last of the crab cakes!). The main course offers a range from beer battered cod and chips to chicken or pulled pork quesadillias. We opted for the steaks. I went for the carb loaded steak sandwich, while my friend, the healthier option of steak and salad. We passed on desserts and went straight to coffee, only to regret the decision but then that’s what girls do. Greenwich Tavern offers good food, cooked well and reasonably priced. It’s a comfortable restaurant with attentive, friendly staff. Spread over three floors with a large bar and a terrace open for the summer, what’s not to like? The Tavern has two function rooms available for private hire, ideal for parties and celebrations in this fantastic location. www.greenwichtavern.co.uk 020 8858 8791 1 King William Walk, London SE10 9JH

CHAPTERS
Food writer David Fitzgerald-Elliot finds it’s the little things at Chapters that make a great meal.
Chapters
www.chaptersblackheath.com 020 8333 2666 43-45 Montpelier Vale, Blackheath Village, London SE3 OTJ
I recently found myself in Blackheath, that
culinary mecca of South London and as it was close to lunchtime I couldn’t resist the urge to head for one of my favourite restaurants to see if it was still as good as the last time I visited. If anything Chapters has upped its game and then some more. It can often be the small touches that really help to make a meal memorable. Take something simple like the roasted hazelnuts in the mixed salad that came with my grilled sardine starter. It might not sound like much, but the wonderful caramalised flavour hit I got was quite something. Chapters has been a Blackheath institution for years, the slick and professional approach to everything from greeting you as you walk through the door to the classy cooking and great presentation of the meal. That’s not to say Chapters is in any way stuffy, it’s not. The bright interior, comfortable seating and views across the heath all help to make this lively and buzzy place a real treat and more importantly, an affordable treat. As the name implies its open from breakfast through to dinner 7 days a week and depending on the time of day, there’s always a deliciously appropriate menu available. Considering the cooking and service is well up in with top London restaurants, Chapters prices are well into the affordable range. Yes, there
maybe cheaper places to eat in Blackheath, but not by much and here you know there is pride from a quality independent place rather than a ubiquitous chain. When you take in to account the standard of cooking any price difference is negligible, I paid just a fraction over £20 for a 350g chunk of rib-eye deliciousness including a choice of sauce.
The a la carte menu is very much a case in point. There are nine starters to choose from with prices ranging from £5.50 to around £9. Nine main courses are supplemented with a further seven dishes from the Josper oven menu including Spatchcock Chicken, Double Barnsley Chop and the famous Chapters Burger plus a choice of steaks.
Chapters also offers another bonus, like my out of this world tasting rib-eye all its steaks are cooked using a specially imported Josper oven which gives the meat a unique flavour thanks to the charcoal embers. The ovens also cooks at incredibly high temperatures helping to seal in the flavour and keep the meat moist and tender.
There is also a choice of a two or three course set menu at lunchtimes and in the evening. Prices range from £12.95 for three courses to £14.95 for three courses at lunch time to £14.95 and £17.95 for two and three courses available Monday to Thursday evenings.
Manager George Peppas told me that he regularly welcomes diners from far and wide. “Most of our customers are local but a number of our regulars travel from London because they like the Blackheath life-style and enjoy being able to eat to the same high standard they are used to but without paying the sort of prices they normally have to.” Chapters reputation has always been underpinned by offering the sort of menu and cooking that people quickly become hooked on. The whole eating experience is geared to make even the simplest meal an occasion. From the front of house teams welcome through to the kitchen everything is designed to please.
Add a kids menu and a fantastic wine list and you can see why Chapters maintains its position as Blackheath’s most popular restaurant despite the increasing competition. Despite the number of high street chains which have moved into the village in recent years, there is still a noticeable difference when it comes to the sort of high standard a local, established eatery can offer. With such reliable quality and reasonable prices, Chapters attracts a lot of repeat business. Regulars can join the restaurant’s loyalty club and enjoy exclusive rewards, as well as receiving priority up-dates about forthcoming events. Like I said, it can be the small touches that make a meal and if you are serious about food in a nonstuffy environment then you will love Chapters.

ROTARY CLUB OF GREENWICH. Alongside some major plays and musicals this year, from a three day run of Alan Ayckbourn’s ABSENT FRIENDS to a four week run of The Who’s rock opera TOMMY, returning to London after almost twenty years, we are delighted to be able to present two unique one-off events with iconic international women. On Thursday 2 July, Germaine Greer brings THE DISAPPEARING WOMAN to Greenwich. Forty years ago, Germaine suggests, it seemed that women were about to take their rightful place in the world, in parliament, in the church, in the judiciary, in the workplace - but when you open the newspaper you find that news is still made by men in suits. Writing in The Guardian after hearing Germaine speak at an event, journalist Myf Warhurst wrote, “there is something utterly glorious about watching someone who is truly liberated through knowledge in full flight”. I have long been a fan of Germaine’s, of her ability to cut to the heart of an issue, and I hope audiences are as excited as me about the opportunity to see her speak live.

Then on Sunday 8 November, US born comedian Ruby Wax brings SANE NEW WORLD to the theatre. Based on her critically acclaimed book and drawing on her knowledge from her recent Masters Degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy at Oxford University, spiked with her trademark comedy, US comedian Ruby’s show is designed to help us understand why we sabotage our sanity with our own thinking. “We are not equipped for this century” said Ruby. “It’s too hard, too fast, and too full of fear; we just don’t have the bandwidth. Our brains can’t take so much information in a world where we’re bombarded by bad news and force-fed information. I can just about take in the weather then I’m exhausted.” Theatre is all about showing us a vision of the world, maybe one that matches our own or maybe one that reveals something new. These two very special events promise to show us the world through the eyes, and the minds, of two important figures, and maybe, even slightly, to change the way we think. Silvertown Tunnel Still time to have your say
To reduce congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel, and improve the reliability and resilience of the wider road network, Transport for London are developing proposals for a new road tunnel under the Thames linking the Greenwich Peninsula and Silvertown, which would be operational by 2021 at the earliest. The twin bore tunnel would connect to the A1020 Silvertown Way/Lower Lea Crossing on the north side and to the A102 Blackwall Tunnel Approach on the south side. The tunnel generally follows the alignment of the Emirates Air Line cable car. The consultation in respect of additional river crossings ran from 7 Jul 2014 to 18 September 2014, receiving almost 7,500 responses. The analysis undertaken has shown that over 90 per cent of respondents expressed support for the new crossings. From the responses received, the majority of feedback supported the introduction of new fixed link crossings, rather than the introduction of new ferry crossings. Having considered all of the issues raised in the
consultation, tfL will now continue to develop the concepts of new bridges at Gallions Reach and Belvedere. They will also consider whether tunnels would be more suitable by releasing greater land for development than would be possible with a bridge. Over the next few months extensive work will take place to develop proposals for two new fixed link crossings at Gallions Reach and Belvedere. This work will:
New crossings at Gallions Reach and Belvedere would transform the connectivity of outer east London, open up major sites for development and help to support the delivery of jobs and homes across a wide area. Once the proposals for these two crossings have been developed further, we will undertake a more detailed consultation, planned to commence in the autumn 2015.
•
Deliver a greater understanding of likely impacts new river crossings could have on traffic flow and the environment;
•
Set out opportunities to improve cross-river links for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport passengers;
•
Give consideration to any additional traffic management requirements to ensure the crossings operate successfully and sustainably;
• Provide a clear business case for new river crossings, including user charging to manage
demand and fund the construction and operation;
•
Explore how best to apply for powers needed to build and operate the new crossings.
TfL will put our consideration of proposals for a new ferry at Woolwich and a ferry at Gallions Reach on hold, pending the outcome of this work. To find out more go to www.tfl.gov.uk/silvertown-tunnel
