HELLO Get the mulled wine simmering, the mince pies swimming in cream, and those tin of chocolates cracked open, then snuggle up and enjoy our December issue. If our front cover fills you with dread rather than festive cheer, it may be our last minute gifts edit which you appreciate the most. Christmas can creep up on you and before you know it so does the obligatory mad dash to the shops. If you are looking for a unique gift and would rather not endure the crowds of the West End or spend hours trawling the internet, look local. We highlight a few gift ideas from local shops and producers to get you thinking. In Deck the Halls, we discover how to transform your home into a winter wonderland, with just a few hints and tips: from clever use of mirrors and lighting, to dressing your staircase for a truly magical look. Of course, if your home is dressed for the occasion, you’ll want to look and feel the part too. In Health and Beauty we turn our attention to achieving the ultimate festive look: mistletoe-ready lips, sultry smokey eyes, soft skin and glossy locks; complete with a generous serving of gradual fake tan, of course. You’ll want to keep the kids busy during the holidays too, so head over to our events and listings for ideas for the month ahead. Also, Tamsyn Clark makes a visit to Chislehurst Caves with her

two children and learns about the cave’s interesting history and stories of ghosts, ghouls and murder. While Claire McKinson gives us 5 great excuses to visit Blackheath this month (including the switch on of the Christmas lights, afternoon tea, and elf-training workshops). Don’t forget to treat yourself too. As well as covering the latest news, reviews and openings in Food and Drink, we also have some great competitions from Champagne + Fromage in Greenwich, and Aqua Bar and Grill in Blackheath. Enter now and you could be enjoying a delicious array of French cheeses and bubbles, or feasting on a lovingly-prepared Mediterranean meal for two. All this, plus more with the latest education, property, art & design and local news. Wishing all of our readers and clients, who kindly support us, a very Merry Christmas full of cheer.

Chislehurst is not only a beautiful spot with great outdoor spaces, lovely shops and good schools, it also has something else to shout about.

Having spotted a gap in the local market for the consultancy style service, Blackheath based Mum-of-two, Laura Slater opened the new independent store, Eat Sleep Love situated on Delacourt Road, Blackheath. Over the last 4 months, the old site has been completely overhauled to create a stunning nursery showroom that allows parents to browse a collection of stylish contemporary and traditional nursery furniture, receive demonstrations of the latest pushchairs and travel systems, as well as view other nursery essentials from changing bags and baby slings to cosy bedding and first age baby clothes. Eat Sleep Love is designed to help busy, expectant parents navigate the sometimes overwhelming choice of products on the market by providing a carefully selected edit of the most trusted baby brands, coupled with friendly expert advice. The flexible appointment only approach, gives parents the time and consideration needed to make important decisions. Laura told Meridian: “I moved to Blackheath three months pregnant with my first son and quickly discovered that, despite a huge number of young families, there were no local shops offering a range of nursery products - with the nearest options at Bluewater or even further afield.” As a Blackheath resident, Laura also hopes to share recommendations for places to visit and activities on offer in the surrounding area for when their baby arrives. Dragonfly Lifestyle’s fashion and wellbeing products are chosen and created by Julie and Louise with love and care, and each reflects the ‘Dragonfly Philosophy’ of celebrating and inspiring women in body, mind and spirit.”

They have a very active business group who work hard to make the town even better than it already is. The Chislehurst Business Group now boasts over 120 members and is growing every month. With the funds they generate, they fund the beautiful Christmas Lights, maintain their active website and social media pages, plus organise local events. If you own a business within BR7, have you considered joining? It is a great way to network with fellow business owners; keep informed on what is going on in the local area and help the local community thrive. Deck the Halls… Transform your home into a Christmas Wonderland

Don’t Forget the Staircase

Drape garland up the handrail of a staircase, and anchor it with gold bows for a Christmas welcome in the hallway. Turn silver and mercury-glass vases and candlesticks into festive Christmas accents by arranging them in groups.

Lights Attract and Distract

If you have objects in your hall that have nowhere else to go don’t hide them make a feature i.e. let the bicycle covered in lights become a feature rather than an eyesore.

Add Swag to Your Mantel

Plan your Christmas decorations to work with your existing decor, even if that means using unexpected colours like cream and beige. Accents in shades of gold and silver blend seamlessly with soft whiteand-ivory colour scheme and can play off the tones of other metallic accessories, which are the current trend.

Fill Cylinders with Ornaments

Use spray paint to add a shimmery touch to pinecones, acorns, or round glass ornaments. Displayed en masse in tall glass vases, they become instant and easy Christmas accents. Less is definitely not more, abundance is the word. It may seem over the top, but if its dark and gloomy outside you need a decadent glow.

Mirrors

Double the numbers of Christmas lights in an instant with the use of mirrors. The bounce the light back and can make a room seem much larger than it is. Mirrored furniture can add that wow factor. A simple side/drinks table is transformed when made from mirrors.

Create a traditional swag on the mantel with thin tree branches and birch bark shavings for a rustic look. Red berries and frosted fir cones add touches to the natural arrangement, which could be used throughout the winter season.

Sitting Comfortably

Creating seating for guests, we never seem to have enough chairs for guests, whether its just Christmas Eve drinks with the neighbours or a sit down feast with the family on Christmas Day or a Boxing Day party for all! Folding or stacking chairs that can disappear when not in use are invaluable and should be roughly the same height as your dining chairs, no one wants to sit on the child’s stool. For soft sitting in the lounge rearrange what’s there and add the odd seat from around the house, it’s surprising where they hide. Pull it all together with matching throws and cushions. Larger cushions on floor will suit the younger guests.

Last Minute Gift Ideas Why do women like to shop more than men? It’s one of the oldest stereotypes, but it’s also probably one of the most accurate: women love to shop. Well, not all of us love it, but most of us do. Men, on the other hand, don’t seem generally all that excited by the activity. There are, of course, some men who enjoy the browsing the racks as much as women (if not more) but many just appear to

tolerate it, while some outright, can’t stand the thought of Christmas shopping. But the fact that women like to shop more than men is not just an empty stereotype — there’s actually some scientific data to back it up. Researchers conducted a survey on 2,000 people and discovered that men get bored with shopping after just 26 minutes.

Are you the tenant of commercial property? Is your lease ending soon? Beware of the financial implications! * Is your lease due to expire soon? Are you planning to terminate your lease before the expiry date? If so, be aware of the following: Stamp duty – if your lease has expired but you are still in occupation of the property, you must notify HM Revenue & Customs that your lease has expired within 30 days of it having expired and pay any stamp duty within that 30 day period. Failure to do so may lead to penalties Double rent – if you serve a notice to quit on your landlord and do not vacate the property on or before the expiry of the notice, the landlord may be entitled to claim double rent and/or double value from you Break notice – care must be taken with the drafting and giving of the notice as there are strict requirements and non-compliance could invalidate the notice. This, in turn, could lead to you missing the “break date” and losing the ability to terminate the lease Dilapidations – it will usually be a requirement of your lease that you must return the property to the landlord in good repair when the lease ends. The landlord will usually serve you with a list of the work to be done which you must complete before the lease ends. The list will usually be extensive as the landlord will be looking to have you carry out as much work as possible If you require advice or further assistance on any of the above, or on any other matter concerning your lease, contact Sharmila Patel on 020 8852 4433 or sharmila@beverleymorris.co.uk * this article does not provide legal advice and has been produced for information purposes only and is not a comprehensive statement of the law in this area. Chislehurst Caves Going underground…Tamsyn Clark does just that When people talk about Chislehurst, they probably mention three things; the pond, the beautiful Commons and the Caves. The Chislehurst Caves have become synonymous with the town and they are famous for lots of reasons. I am eager to find out more about this unusual place. Having lived in Chislehurst for two years, I hadn’t yet had the opportunity to visit. I have two young children (five and two) and before now, it hadn’t felt like an appropriate family visit. I’d heard it can be a little scary! Our guide is Terence Grimes who has been conducting tours for many years. We are in good hands as he sets the scene for what’s ahead. I am not sure what to expect of this underground maze. I also feel my 5 year old gripping my hand, he clearly shares my trepidation and we tentatively enter the caves hand in hand. My two year old is happy as Larry; clearly not altogether aware of what awaits. As we gather at the first gathering point, all the adults are given paraffin lamps (somewhat adds to the occasion) and we are guided to a giant map of the caves. I say “Caves” but it turns out we should be referring to them as mines. These are not natural caverns but passages carved out of the hillside by men in search of chalk and flint. Whilst Terry is keen to give a sense of the history of the mine, he explains it is really difficult to know just how old the place is but we are talking thousands of years, not hundreds. The mines themselves are huge, stretching over 6 hectares and are up to 30 metres below ground. That’s about 6 international rugby fields – this place is immense. Terence is keen to cover the most important periods in the cave’s history and the mines had their time as an Edwardian tourist attraction, an ammunition depot during the First World War and a Mushroom Farm during the mid-war period. That brings us nicely to one of its more famous roles as a refuge for thousands of people during the Second World War, seeking protection from the Battle of Britain and the Blitz on London. The mines were transformed into an underground town of some 15,000 people, complete with lighting, ventilation and sanitation. The tenacity and ingenuity of this generation was, to be frank, incredible. I am inspired. My 5 year old certainly isn’t taking in all the detail but the guide and the visual displays bring alive the fact that people lived

here. He is fascinated. From simple beginnings; with people sleeping on the bare floor, the cave’s committee worked hard and soon there were bunk beds, electric lighting, a canteen, entertainment, a medical centre, a citizens advice bureau, a cathedral and even a choir. Terry also tells us about the birth of a little girl in the caves, the only baby to be born underground during the War. Her parents chose to call her “Cavina Rose”. One of the other fascinating periods for the caves was during the 60s and 70s, when they played host to some of the most iconic bands and artists of that time. Bands such as the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin all performed there. The advent of health and safety means that events such as these are no longer possible. How sad – it must have been incredible to be at one of these gigs. The tour then takes a slightly darker turn with tales of ghosts, ghouls and even murder. Our five year old is now a little perturbed, as Terry retells tales of yore with stories of druid altars, murder and inexplicable noises that guides have heard. I am not one for ghosts but Terry is pretty convincing. I won’t spoil the full detail for you but needless to say the caves are well worth a visit. History, intrigue and a little bit of fun too. I catch up with Jason, the charismatic manager of the caves after our tour and he explains that every tour is different with each guide giving their own personal take on the labyrinth below ground. I love this – this is a privately owned tourist attraction and I admire the fact that there isn’t an overly sophisticated corporate strategy with photo opportunities, over-zealous programme sellers and a gift shop and café that overcharges. The café is a great addition to this visit. Whilst it is dated in appearance, it makes up for it with their delicious home-made cake. Try the marble cake – ours was gone in seconds. Part of the caves charm is its simplicity – they let the cave’s and their stories do the talking. We will definitely be returning once the children are a little older and able to really enjoy the experience. My two young boys were definitely a little scared and the caves may be more suited to slightly older children. For opening times and costs, please visit their website: www.chislehurst-caves.co.uk or call 020 8467 3264.

Aim high at Babington! Finding the right school for your child is so important, it should be an environment where he or she can be happy, learn and thrive. Class size is one factor to consider; it is proven that children learn faster in small class sizes. In fact, they are one of the main reasons why you send your child to an independent school, a class of 20 children is ideal. Immediately pupils are placed in a situation where they have to engage and interact with each other and with their teacher, they are surrounded with attention and encouragement, creating an excellent climate for learning. But small class size alone does not ensure a good education. The quality of the teaching, the school leadership, the size of the school, the amount of parent involvement and other factors are important to consider too. Good early years’ education is essential to compete for a place in the top independent senior schools. Entrance exams for independent senior schools, just like the grammar schools’ 11+ assessments, can be tough. Entry to the Senior Department at Babington House School is selective. The entrance examination

from which academic scholarships are decided, includes verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, Mathematics and English. The examination day also provides an opportunity to meet teachers and other pupils already at the school and have some fun! Taster days before the examination day ‘or afterwards’ are encouraged and this makes the whole experience less stressful and as the Headmaster, Mr Lello, said: “it also gives us a chance to see the wider talents and gifts of our prospective pupils.” Babington provides an academic environment in classes of no more than 20 pupils, tailored to the needs of your son or daughter, believing that bright children benefit from carefully monitored and well directed learning, where self-discipline is highly prized. Epic Swim Epic 2017 swim from New York to London will end at Thames Barrier. London IT engineer and endurance swimmer, Michael Ventre, 38, is aiming to raise at least £5m for Oxfam by swimming 3,800 miles from New York to London – a feat which has never been attempted before. To meet the costs of providing his support team with a boat, food, fuel, and specialist equipment, Michael will need corporate support. In the meantime he is asking the public to help start the project with an online crowdfunding campaign that is running until December 10: NewYorktoLondonSwim.hubbub.net. From the age of 10, Michael dreamt of swimming seemingly impossible distances after seeing Thomas Gregory on TV becoming the youngest person to swim the English Channel in 1988. Thomas attended Colfe’s School in Lee SE12 from 1983 to ‘94 and went on to become an Army Intelligence Officer and is now a senior manager at Deloitte. Michael successfully swam the English Channel himself in 2011, and has completed two other extreme swims.

Image of Michael Ventre at the Thames Barrier where his epic transatlantic swim will end

Medical and oceanic experts have said his outlandish New York to London challenge is possible, and Michael will set off in April 2017. He will swim up to eight hours a day, weather conditions permitting, and then get back on board his support boat for rest, food, and whatever else it will take to get back in the sea and do the same the next day. GPS readings will put him back in at exactly the same point he previously got out.

Maze Hill

The big issue is that it could still take up to seven months of swimming every day that the challenging North Atlantic and then English Channel weather allows.

Is snoring affecting your relationship and health? Snoring can put a real strain on relationships. Kevin’s wife Louise, a patient of ours, approached us about his snoring. “I’m worried he will die in the night! His snoring wakes up the whole house. Then he chokes and doesn’t breathe at all for long periods. He’s always tired and irritable. His complexion is grey. He looks awful.” We regularly hear stories of couples no longer sharing a bedroom or even separating due to snoring. Snoring is often linked with sleep apnoea, periods when there is no breathing during sleep. The ensuing symptoms can include waking still tired despite a night’s sleep, waking with a dry mouth or sore throat, extreme sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, headaches and not surprisingly, irritability. Although most people see snoring to be just a social problem, when associated with sleep apnoea, there can be serious medical connotations.

Kevin has now been wearing one of Professor L’Estrange’s oral appliances for two months. Louise says “The whole family sleeps better, not just Kevin. His face is a healthy pink again. He is much less irritable too!”

Professor Peter L’Estrange, a leading dental expert in the field of snoring and sleep apnoea, has over the past two decades had great success using conservative non-surgical approaches.

Kevin says “I know I was grumpy before. I don’t feel washed out in the morning. I never thought a dentist could help me with this. I’m amazed that so many people I talk to are affected by snoring or apnoea, so I’m telling them about Professor L’Estrange at Finn Dental Specialists.”

This may mean simply wearing a custom made oral appliance to bed. Others respond to comfortable devices which open the nasal airway. Whilst wearing a pressurised air mask to bed can help, many people do not need or want this. All too often this is all they are offered, when a simpler solution would work.

Salt Cave The smokey eye look

December is definitely the season to grab the charcoal eyeliner and some sparkly eyeshadow ready for the staff Christmas party. The key is to blend your chosen shades together with the softer colour in the corner and the darker shade going out.

Moisturise your skin

Winter is harsh on your skin as the cold air-dries you out and can even cause problems like eczema and psoriasis to flair up. Make sure to drink even more water than before and moisturise every morning whilst your skin is still damp.

care Exfoliate your lips Hair All hair types can suffer during Mistletoe, anyone? If you’re preparing to pucker up this Christmas then make sure you’ve been exfoliating your lips. Simply mix some honey and brown sugar together and gently rub it on your lips so you’ll have lipstick ready smackers in no time.

Gradual fake tan

In December it can be easy to forget about your legs, which means they’re covered up and getting paler by the day. Gradual fake tan can be a lifesaver in winter as it takes minimal effort and is streak-free.

The change in temperature dries out your hair so start using moisturising conditioner and use a deep-conditioning hair mask to add an extra shine to your hair. Every season has a different hairstyle trend but with Christmas you can’t go wrong with some big tousled curls. Heated rollers are an easy way of getting the look and they can be worn whilst your wrapping your Christmas presents – easy.

The last asthma attack left her in coma for several days. She started salt therapy at Bexleyheath Salt Cave shortly after the last asthma attack. After a few sessions, she noticed improvements and since then she has been feeling much better. Her asthma is now under control and she has started doing daily activities again without feeling tired all the time. She also uses less and less medication. Pop up restaurant The Terrace As the Royal Arsenal development takes shape and the occupancy grows, so does the demand for places to dine of an evening. One enterprising young chef, Christopher Hackett has created a pop up restaurant at his cafe, The Terrace. Situated on the top floor gallery, in one of the warehouses in Gunnery Terrace, amongst the interior cast iron roof supports and simple decor, the intimate space makes it feel like a private dinner party. In fact, as it has around twenty covers you could very easily have your very own dinner party. Going with the Halloween theme we started with a complimentary pumpkin and mango Bellini, there was no need to study the menu as it’s pre set, just add your choice of wine. In good time the starter arrived and on a chilly night the Thai-spiced pumpkin veloute with toasted coconut was perfect, with the

right amount of heat to the sweetness of the coconut. Followed by an inventive fish course of smoked haddock and creamed leek cannelloni, using the leek to wrap the fish, which meant it was moist and delicious. Attentive waitresses keep the wine topped up and there seems to be a real party atmosphere. Main course of honey smoked duck, savoy cabbage and crispy bacon had an autumnal feel, good comfort food, just what you need with the onset of winter. Rich flavours with smokey undertones. Impressed so far, the dessert arrived as a sharing platter described as A ‘ field with autumn fruits’. Our attention went to the dry ice mist, and then the mix of spicey figs and apple, gingerbread, homemade ice cream and mini ‘pumpkin cakes’, a true showstopper. Find out details for the next pop up theme dinner on Saturday 12 Dec by calling 07814 961903 9-11 Gunnery Terrace, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich SE18.

THE GIRL WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MOON

GOODSTOCK

JAMES HADDRELL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF GREENWICH THEATRE, There has been a lot of discussion in recent months about the place of theatre in Greenwich. Along with the council, we have explored whether our current home is still fit for purpose, whether there are other locations available to us, and even whether there should be a theatre in Greenwich at all.

Theatre, another of our supported companies, presents the World Premiere tour of the new play THREE GENERATIONS OF WOMEN; and I am delighted to have finally secured three performances of Anna Helena-McLean’s astonishing, award-nominated solo performance, TITANIA.

While we all know that the building we occupy is desperately overdue a refurbishment, that is only to be expected in a building that has been home to live performance for over 150 years, and so we are determined to protect the heritage, the decades of love and loyalty shown to the theatre by the local community and the local authority, and the future of our theatre here in Greenwich. While we work on final plans for improving the building, we have put together an exciting Spring season that shows what we are all about.

We also continue to present a packed programme of shows for families and children. Little Angel Theatre brings HANDA’S HEN after the sell-out success of Handa’s Surprise; tickets are already selling fast for Immersion Theatre’s UK premiere of RAPUNZEL, an American family musical by the creators of TV show Friends; and Tortoise In A Nutshell, one of my favourite theatre companies, come back to Greenwich with THE LOST THINGS, a brand new family show performed in a custom built dome on stage, with space for just 40 audience members per performance.

As ever, we are proud to be showcasing some of the country’s finest emerging theatre companies. Lost Watch, one of our supported companies, comes to Greenwich with GOODSTOCK – a moving and upbeat true story about a young woman carrying the cancer gene BRCA1; The Human Zoo make their Greenwich debut with the beautiful five-star show THE GIRL WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MOON; Broken Leg

These are just a few of the highlights so visit our website for full listings and be sure to book your tickets soon. If you’re still struggling to find that perfect Christmas present, what better gift could there be than a shared visit to the theatre…? ME R IDIA N ART & DESIGN

The Birth of London’s Newest City Peter Kent records the past and visualises the future of Greenwich and Docklands Peter Kent, Greenwich artist and topographical chronicler has spent the whole of this year on major new work, charting the birth of the New London City of Greenwich and Docklands. In his inimitable style, he has created three magnificent pen and colour wash drawings of current developments centred on Greenwich, the Peninsula and Docklands. Each is drawn from a different compass point and distance, executed in his uniquely recognisable style.

45

These spectacular aerial panoramas not only document the massive ongoing commercial and residential enterprises within an emerging city, but also visualise the future in the light of current plans and proposals. In addition, within the artwork, Peter writes details relating to the history of each area. The end result is an extraordinary and unique rendering of what is currently happening on his London doorstep, our historical legacy and our future. The work will be of great interest to all those involved in current developments in Greenwich and Docklands - from international investors to construction companies, estate agents and end users. The exhibition is sponsored by Greenwich & Blackheath Estate Agents, John Payne who are opening their second SE10 office in 2016.

Moat opens new doors to affordable home ownership in Surrey Quays, London SE16

Three wheelchair accessible homes – comprising two with two bedrooms and one with three bedrooms – are available now at the Berkeley Homes development at Marine Wharf in Surrey Quays, Canada Water. All of these homes come with car parking facilities.

Spacious

Available from housing association, Moat, these homes are designed to enable people with accessibility needs to effortlessly access and enjoy their homes. Extra space inside each apartment facilitates turning circles and transfer spaces; in addition there is level access into the front door and around the interior. To allocate these homes, Moat will award priority to those with household members who are registered as disabled. Specification items such as carpets, white goods and branded kitchen appliances are all included in the share price, enabling first time buyers to move in without all of the additional costs often associated with starting up a new build home.

Shared ownership

The new homes at Marine Wharf are available for shared ownership sale from Moat. Sometimes known as part buy, part rent, shared ownership is a government-backed initiative that can help you onto the housing ladder by enabling you buy a percentage share in a brand new home. You’ll pay a subsidised rent on the remaining share; however many shared owners find this to be less expensive than renting privately.

The real beauty of shared ownership is that you only need a deposit for the percentage of the home that you are buying. For example, if you buy 25% of a home with a full market value of £250,000, you’ll need to find £6,250 for a 10% deposit (compared to £25,000 for an equivalent 10% deposit on an open market purchase).

Local area

Situated close to London’s largest marina, Surrey Quays boasts a whole range of local amenities. The shopping centre, due to be regenerated, has a variety of popular restaurants and shops; close by there is also Surrey Quays Leisure Park which consists of an Odeon cinema, a Hollywood Bowl bowling alley and a Gala Bingo along with more restaurants. Also rich in heritage, Surrey Quays still maintains its maritime connections with Greenland Dock Pier, providing great links to Central London via the Thames Clippers, where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the City. The Marine Wharf site was originally a shipyard where warships were built, this later became part of London’s Docklands.

Find out more

The new homes at Marine Wharf are on offer to local people (predominantly first time buyers) and are delivered in partnership with Lewisham Borough Council and the Greater London Authority.

“Anyone thinking of buying a home should come along to see what shared ownership has to offer. These properties are beautiful, spacious and will soon be ready to become someone’s home. An additional advantage is the low deposit requirement; this is usually around 10% of the share value rather than 10% of the property’s full market value.”

If you’re interested in buying a home at Marine Wharf or finding out more about shared ownership, contact Katie May, New Homes Officer at Moat, on 0845 359 6836 or via email at katie.may@moat.co.uk.

Situated by the newly rebuilt train station, The Square allows residents easy routes into the city, with London Bridge accessible in only 15 minutes, Canary Wharf in 22 and Victoria in 28 minutes. For those looking to explore the local area, specially created pedestrian and cycle routes run through and from Kidbrooke Village, while Blackheath is just a short walk away. Lyndon Nunn, Sales Director of Berkeley Homes (East Thames) said: “Apartments at The Square have been designed with every aspect of modern living in mind, from individually designed kitchens and luxurious flooring finishes, to the concierge service and the energy efficient measures throughout. Perfect for those who want the best that London has to offer, in a unique location surrounded by beautiful landscaping and open space, The Square at Kidbrooke Village Centre will be the vibrant hub of the city’s newest neighbourhood and part of our fast-growing community.” Interested buyers can visit Kidbrooke Village’s Sales and Marketing Suite and talk to a member of the Berkeley team, as well as visit a show home and the development.
