local N E W S Royal Visit HRH the Duke of Kent attended a performance by the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra at Blackheath Halls in his capacity as Patron of Trinity Laban. The Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra played Debussy, Ravel and Berlioz under the baton of acclaimed French conductor Diego Masson. Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading exponents of the music of the 20th and 21st centuries Masson completed his studies at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming percussionist in Domaine Musicale the contemporary music group founded by Pierre Boulez. After considerable success as Music Director of the Marseille Opera in the 1970s, Masson went on to pursue an international conducting career, which has taken him to the major musical centres of Europe, Scandinavia and the Antipodes. Canary Wharf Group plc announced the very first retail brands to open at the new Crossrail development, due to open its doors in May 2015. Opening three years in advance of the actual station, the forthcoming retail and leisure destination will play home to some of the UK’s popular brands, including Everyman Cinema, the first in east London, Sports Bar & Grill and the Mexican burrito restaurant, Poncho 8. The mix of these lifestyle and retail brands will be placed within the six storey development, designed by Foster + Partners, which covers the station with a semi open-air timber lattice view. Camille Waxer, Chief Administrative Officer for Canary Wharf Group plc, said: ‘It’s very important for us to offer a varied experience to our loyal customers and we look forward to welcoming them at the new Crossrail development opening in May 2015.’ The Group’s 115,000 sq. ft. retail and leisure development above the new Crossrail Station combined with the recent Jubilee Place extension represents one of the largest retail expansions currently underway in the UK.

Change of Address The Blackheath Society’s office has moved from Chapman House to the Bakehouse building at the rear of Age Exchange in the centre of Blackheath Village. The Society is moving, after a quarter of a century in the old stationmaster’s building at Chapman House, to become an integral part of the vital new community centre recently developed by Age Exchange, and which features a new Village library, several meeting rooms and café facilities. The opportunity to relocate to the new premises arose when Age Exchange decided to develop the Bakehouse building as the second part of a largescale refurbishment programme that has seen the organisation revitalised in the past two years. Crystal Palace Park A commitment to improve Crystal Palace Park has been re-affirmed despite the news their Heritage Lottery Fund application was not successful. The HLF application, which included partnership working with the Mayor of London and community groups, outlined a range of incremental improvements for the park. These improvements would have seen Sir Joseph Paxton’s central axis re-established as the focus of the park through a number of physical changes, reuniting the park as a single, designed and connected landscape. The proposals also included improved visitor facilities and a range of activities to attract park visitors. The news follows the ZhongRong Group’s announcement last October of their £500 million investment proposal to rebuild The Crystal Palace and restore the surrounding public park. The council has now entered into an exclusivity agreement until February 2015, which allows time to bring about the detailed plans required for a planning application which is anticipated towards the end of 2014.

Royal Artillery Band bids ‘Farewell’ To Woolwich After 251 Years The Royal Artillery Band has called Woolwich in south east London ‘home’ for more than two hundred and fifty years. In that time the Army has grown and shrunk countless times. The Royal Artillery Regiment left Woolwich back in 2007 and at long last, under new restructuring of Army Music, the Royal Artillery Band is to move too, to be reunited with their Regiment in Tidworth in Wiltshire. The Royal Artillery Band l marked its historic departure from Woolwich in February by marching through the Royal Borough of Greenwich and a parade with musical accompaniment in General Gordon’s Square.

Mens Fashion

Combine classic with contemporary for this spring’s look A man’s wardrobe should combine classic with a bit of contemporary, mix function with a bit of flair, and above all, achieve an individual style that works for them. Trends this spring highlight tailoring, which gets even softer and more casual and it seems men love tailoring. They also love being comfortable and casual. The combo of the two means more blazers that feel like sweaters and suits that look rumpled and leisurely and yet smart.

Shirt – Diesel Palm Tree shirt House of Frazer £100 Shoes – Next floral print pumps £28 Trainers – Nike Air Max 90 neon green from £95

Those of you who recall the last time that double breasted suits and sports coats were in fashion may remember the boxy cut it inevitably came with. Fear not, that cut has gone. In its place is one that defies what doublebreasted suits were originally designed to do: hide a plump figure. Instead they’re now designed to accent and to heighten the perfect masculine shape: the V-shaped, well worked body. Come summer try the white suit, perfect for looking cool. If the European fashion shows are any indication, the casual, doublebreasted blazer is officially back and in every conceivable colour. Neon trainers are finding their place amongst the fashionable set, floral prints are popping up all over as in shorts and shirts (even pumps), and the man bag is back and becoming chic.

Diary of an estate agent (age 493/4)

Values on the up and the chicken & egg question! Hi, my name is Richard Piddock and I have had the pleasure of being an estate agent for coming up 28 years this summer! That’s a long time to suffer abuse, albeit in recent years the bankers have been getting more stick! jdm was established in 1996 and is an independent family run business and (for my sins) I am one of the partners, based at our Blackheath Village office. At the moment the sales market is really busy, with demand outstripping supply especially at the lower end of the market, hence pushing prices up. In many cases it’s leading to a bun fight for the best properties, so though this is always a bit a hot potato, the only fair way of giving everyone a chance to bid for the property, is to go to best and final offers. The frustration is that you end up with more unhappy clients than happy ones, as there can only be one buyer, leaving a number of disappointed people.

COURT ROAD

DO I SELL OR DO I BUY FIRST! Many of us would prefer to find a place before we put our home on the market. But then you can lose out to another buyer who has already agreed a sale. So how can you get around this problem? Well, we have come up with a cunning plan (Baldrick), called ‘selective marketing’. I would be happy to drop by to discuss our strategy and I can let you know how much your home has gone up in value. Lastly, and my children think it’s very amusing as I am getting old, I am trying to engage in the world of social media so I have started tweeting (is that the right phrase!). As well as some fun stuff, I am tweeting info on new properties that come to the market, which will mean those that follow me will get to know about them ahead of the game. You can find me @jdmblackheath. More next month – all the best Richard

Country style for City Living Country living imparts a simple lifestyle and back-to-nature ambience

C

ountry decor evokes a feeling of nostalgia for simpler days, making it an uncomplicated, relaxing design choice. It’s not all just ruffles and roosters in today’s country designs, which feature nuanced themes blended from farmhouse styles and vintage memorabilia. Regardless of where you live, the ambience of a country home can be created with the right furnishings, textiles and collectibles. Country kitchens draw inspiration for their colour from the environment, especially kitchens in rural farmhouse settings. When you think of the countryside, you’re sure to see lavender fields and bright sunshine. While there are many elements that contribute to the country style of decorating, the resulting look is always rustic, oldworld, and welcoming. The look fits well into both period homes or new build. www.thestylishdogcompany.com Colours used to decorate in the country style come from the full spectrum of the colour wheel. Sunny yellow and soft gold, firey red and burnt rust, bright grass green and dark hunter green, cobalt blue and soft ocean tones. Bright black and dull greys punctuate the bright colors and define accessory pieces. Rusted metal furniture, lighting fixtures, and furniture give warm colour and wonderful lines. An important element in pieces used in country style decorating is the use of natural materials. Rough stained plaster or painted wood panelled walls, delicate

carved wood details, and chair seats woven of rush give texture and simplicity to the look. Natural stone floors are covered with wool or cotton rugs. No real country home is complete without a stone fireplace. A heavy beam at the top of the opening serves as a mantle. Tiles, either stone or ceramic, form the border. The hearth is clay or brick, and herbs, copper pots, and iron accessory pieces hang on the sidewalls.

Business

Love Thy Neighbour? How do you deal with neighbour disputes and problems? In most cases the parties should make extensive efforts to try and resolve these disputes by dialogue and discussions to prevent an escalation of the dispute. Sometimes it is necessary to involve solicitors who can give advice on the most appropriate steps to take and who can make efforts to try and resolve matters through correspondence or mediation. Where there is a boundary dispute a surveyor can be instructed to measure or define the disputed boundary or to deal with any party wall issues. In extreme cases of noise or anti-social behaviour the local authority can step in and apply for an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) from court.

NEIGHBOUR DISPUTES can occur frequently over a number of issues and can lead to hostility, stress and, in some cases, extensive legal costs and expenses. Disputes can arise from boundary and party wall issues as well as problems such as noise, overgrown hedges or overhanging branches as well as unpleasant smells, bonfire smoke or other ‘nuisances’ emanating from one property to the other. Neighbour disputes commonly arise in buildings where there are flats and noise is audible through walls or floors.

18 | www.meridian-magazine.co.uk

In most cases, for example where there is a boundary or party wall dispute or problems with trees, it is helpful to provide your solicitor with plans, photographs or even video evidence. In situations concerning noise or unruly behaviour then it is important to keep a diary or log of events which can be used as part of your evidence against the other party concerned. If matters cannot be resolved by correspondence or mediation then you still have the option of applying to the county court for an injunction to restrain noise, unwarranted activities or nuisance and also, in some cases, to recover compensation. However, this

procedure can be expensive and before you embark on such a course of action you should ascertain whether you have access to legal expenses insurance cover which is commonly found in household insurance policies. If this is available then the insurers may agree to fund your claim and also provide you with an indemnity against liability for the other person’s costs if your claim is unsuccessful.

Rupert Chichester is a solicitor and partner with Grant Saw Solicitors LLP of Norman House, 110-114 Norman Road, Greenwich, London SE10 9EH. He can offer advice on the issues raised in this article together with other legal problems. To contact him please call 020 8858 6971 or email: rjc@grantsaw.co.uk

Spring into the Garden

Gardening

London Plant Fair The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the UK’s leading gardening charity, will hold the annual RHS Great London Plant Fair from 1-2 April. A dazzling array of spring colour alongside a vast selection of plants to buy will provide a stunning backdrop to the show. This festival of spring will give visitors the opportunity to stock up on plants and take home tips and advice on how to revitalize their gardens. The Lindley Hall will also feature the RHS Early Daffodil Competition. Visitors can receive advice on how to garden in a changing climate through a series of talks designed to help gardeners cope with unpredictable and dramatic weather. The show will also include a full programme of talks on spring flowers, given by the growers.

Be Bold Using bold colour in the garden can be a challenge. When selecting plants for their colour people are daring and confident in their choices. Fiery reds and oranges mixed with pinks and blues in a haphazard tapestry that somehow works, but when it comes to garden walls and structures, many people end up choosing a muted tone of their initial brave choices and then wonder why they aren’t happy with the result. If you love colour, be adventurous, as the choices are pretty much endless. Paint manufacturers can supply paint from extensive colour palettes suitable for external masonry, as well as wood

and metalwork. This provides you with the same scope of decoration that you would normally reserve for inside your home. You can then add complementary or contrasting plants and flowers to emphasise the look. For those not quite as daring with bold colour, you don’t have to make a permanent statement. Keeping your walls and structures neutral but bringing in boldly coloured plants, flowers or planters can be just as effective. This is often an easier way to incorporate bold colour without going over the top or making a costly mistake. Noel Anderton, Landscape One Design Ltd, www.landscapeone.co.uk

In addition to this, the RHS Spring Fair Late will take place in the Lindley Hall on 1 April from 6-9pm.

Ask the Expert Skin - SOS With spring bringing a mix of warmer winds and sunnier days, taking care of our skin begins with understanding the changes it goes through each season.

It’s very easy to take our eyes and eyesight for granted. If you have sore, blurred vision or the feeling of something in your eye you could be suffering from ’dry eye syndrome’. About a third of us will suffer from this irritating eye condition at some point in our lives, which can be caused by weather conditions, hormonal changes or central heating. Eye drops that moisten will help. If you work with computers your eyes will need regular screen breaks to prevent eyestrain. Remember the 20 minute break rule so take a break and make yourself a cup of tea or take a 20 second break and focus on an object at least 20 feet away. Adjusting your focus will help prevent weary eyes.

Ideally we should keep wearing the same amount of sunscreen year-round, however most people tend to decrease or stop using SPF in the winter. Whether you’ve been thorough with your exfoliation routine during the winter or not, spring is not the time for harsh scrubs. If your skin needs plenty of exfoliation to prevent any problems once the natural oils kick into the spring cycle, go for a cleansing cloth instead of a strong mechanical scrub. When it comes to changes in your skin care routine as you leave behind winter for spring, keep using your lip balm. You might need to replace your thick winter one with a lighter version, but proper hydration for your lips is very important. If you stop using it, you might end up with chapped lips that will take longer to repair than to prevent. Clean up your make-up kit. Besides switching your winter palette for more springfriendly colours, you also need to check the shelf life of all your makeup products. You may not consider it one of the important changes for spring skin care, but going through all your makeup and throwing out anything that’s outdated is a step you shouldn’t skip.

Eyes Right

Eyes are ten times more sensitive to UV damage than skin and long-term exposure can cause serious eye conditions. On bright days remember the sunglasses and when buying glasses look for a pair that offers 100% UV protection. Smoking can double the risk of AMD the leading cause of sight loss in later life. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that affects a tiny part of the retina at the back of your eye. Perhaps now’s the time to think of giving up smoking.

Keep Smiling Even if you do everything right, you could still be at risk! Teresa Debono of Smile Impressions advises... Some people think it’s normal if your gums bleed while brushing or flossing. It’s not. This is a leading symptom of periodontal disease and needs to be looked at by your dentist or, better still, hygienist. Compare your gum tissue to the skin on the back of your hand. If your hand bled every time you touched it, would you ignore it? Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums become swollen and red due to inflammation, which is the body’s natural response to the presence of harmful bacteria. In the more serious form of periodontal disease (called periodontitis), the gums pull away from the tooth and supporting gum tissues are destroyed. Chronic periodontitis, the most advanced form of the disease, progresses relatively slowly in most people and is typically more evident in adulthood. Although inflammation as a result of a bacterial infection is behind all forms of periodontal disease, a variety of factors can influence the severity of the disease. Important risk factors include inherited or genetic susceptibility, smoking, lack of adequate home care, age, diet, health history, and medications. Add periodontal disease to the long list of conditions that smoking can cause, cancer, heart disease, strokes and low birth weight infants. If the bacteria that contribute to plaque and gum disease enter your blood stream through bleeding gums, they can travel to your heart and this could cause blood clots, and this can also become a serious condition for any diabetic. Many people don’t know they have periodontal disease because they expect it to be painful or have some obvious outward sign. The best way to know if you are suffering from this condition is to visit your dentist/dental hygienist regularly. Periodontal disease causes your gums to recede, loosening your teeth, and if untreated, eventually causes them to fall out. If this has happened to you, the good news is that dental implants can be used to replace any teeth you are missing. The better news is that this can often be prevented with the right treatment in the early stages.

Theatrebugs, Pharrell Williams and the Brit Awards! It was just a regular fun filled Theatrebugs session in a Community Centre in Woolwich, south east London; until, Mr. Pharrell Williams walked in! Queen Allen, a Theatrebugs facilitator, was finishing up one of her Theatrebugs sessions, dancing with the children to ‘Happy!’ the new Pharrell song, well–known and loved by the little ones at Theatrebugs, as it has recently featured in Despicable Me 2! When all of a sudden, Pharrell Williams entered the room and joined in the fun! He had heard that Queen was his biggest UK fan and really wanted to surprise her at her place of work to say thanks!

The collection also includes gifts and toys and hundreds of innovative ideas and time saving products to help parents through each stage of baby and child development from feeding and weaning to sleep and potty training. The Fundamental Values

Education

For educating the whole person At Blackheath High School we deliver an education that provides opportunities to develop skills, to gain knowledge and to strengthen character. In order to achieve this, our teaching and learning is supported by our unique ‘Pillars of Learning,’ which are: Resilience; Enterprise; Innovation; Community Spirit and Environmental Awareness. Implementing these pillars encourages our girls to develop the thoughts, values and behaviours that we promote at Blackheath High School. We provide an enriched curriculum that is not confined to a classroom or restricted to school hours. Instead, we recognise that everything we do has the power to influence the kind of women that our girls will become. Our ‘Pillars of Learning’ support our aim to equip our learners with the confidence needed to see opportunities not boundaries, challenges not obstacles and a belief in themselves that they have an important contribution to make to their School, to their community and beyond. Our focus is on all round development; each pupil is inspired to ‘aim high’ in all that they do, academically and beyond. Whilst we are obviously proud of our girls’ academic success, we realise that, whilst excellent qualifications will enable our girls to study at their university of choice and provide them with the basic entry requirements for their chosen careers, it is their personal qualities and skills that will help them to climb the ladder of success in a globalised, competitive work place. Our Pillars of Learning are nurtured, as part of the school’s culture, during lessons, assemblies and form times. For example, to help instill ‘Resilience’, girls are encouraged to take risks in their lessons and to learn the importance of being able to bounce back from inevitable failure. Even our youngest pupils have a mantra ‘be brave and strong, when little things go wrong’ and, throughout their school lives our girls are taught to face challenges that push them out of their comfort zones. In addition, all girls participate in outward-bound adventure trips, through which they gain confidence and self-esteem. Similarly, ‘Enterprise’ is taught through supporting and guiding our students to plan, organise and manage initiatives such as fundraising events, displaying a wealth of ideas and creative skills with great enthusiasm! This helps them to learn to use their initiative, to research products and ideas, and to apply their academic knowledge to ‘real life’ situations. This develops resourcefulness and the ability to make informed decisions. They are also encouraged to think ‘outside of the box’ and be innovative. Here, girls benefit from an education described by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate as ‘stimulating and extraordinarily supportive; conducive to the highest standards of teaching and learning.’ We appreciate that each girl is different and we value those differences. But, with our distinctive approach to education, all of our girls develop a love of learning, and typically become resilient and confident young women.

We look forward to welcoming you to visit our school to see for yourself what makes our school so unique. www.blackheathhighschool.gdst.net

Movers and Shakers Bickley Park’s new Headmaster Patrick Wenham welcomed key members of the school’s local community to an event last month. The Movers and Shakers evening provided a chance for Mr. Wenham to set out his vision for Bickley Park School to lead the way in boys’ education and work with local organisations for the benefit of the whole community. Attended by representatives from a diverse range of community groups and organisations the event was the first of its kind at the school. A traditional boys’ only prep school, Bickley Park aims to offer a world-class education for boys aged 2½ to 13. Fully aware of the growing body of research that suggests boys are being out-performed by girls across every phase of education from nursery to university in the UK’s schools, Bickley Park works hard to promote boys’ learning. Teachers at Bickley Park School love working with boys. The school delivers a curriculum that recognises boys’ needs and interests, motivating them to make the most of their potential. www.bickleyparkschool.co.uk

Minister visits John Roan School It is 100 years this year since the start of the First World War. As part of that, Helen Grant the Minister leading the commemorations visited John Roan School in Blackheath last month. Two pupils from the school were among the first in the country to go on the battlefields visits, a government funded programme to reconnect young people to WW1. Their visit was particularly poignant because 30 John Roan old boys were killed in the War and are remembered on a plaque at the school. Des Malone, headteacher said of the visit, ‘It was a great pleasure to host Helen Grant, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Equalities to look at the work we have done as part of the government programme to commemorate the centenary of WW1. She saw the work pupils had produced both in 2D and 3D models of life for both troops and civilians at that time. She spoke engagingly with our pupils, some of whom had travelled to the WW1 battlefields and cemeteries. The school’s connection to WW1 is very strong and we have a memorial in our foyer to our fallen, which include 8 sets of brothers and one Victoria Cross. We look forward to engaging with pupils and the local community as this terrible anniversary approaches.’

Food & Drink

At its best during March… The first signs of spring promise a new gathering of vegetable, fruit, meat and seafood One of the biggest trends in British foods is to eat seasonal foods; as the food is fresher and much healthier. It is also more environmentally friendly as the foods are often local and not been flown in from other countries. Early spring sees food start to lighten after the comfort foods of winter, but not too much. The weather in Britain is still inclement one-day spring sunshine, the next day snow. So don’t forget the stews and casseroles just yet. This month look out for Brussels Sprouts, Beetroot, Broccoli, Crab, Carrots, Celeriac, Chicory, Clams, Cockles, Cauliflower, Eel, Hake, John Dory, Jerusalem Artichokes, Kale, lobster, Lemon Sole, Leeks, Mussels, Oysters, Parsnips, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Red Chicory and Radicchio, Spinach, Salmon, Scallops, Skate, Swede, Salad Onions, Sorrel, Sea Bass, Rhubarb, Turnips, Trout, Winkles. In terms of meat, venison has a flavour reminiscent of beef, but is richer and can have a gamey note. Venison tends to have a finer texture and is leaner than comparable cuts of beef. Although popular on the Continent, rabbit is often overlooked as a dinner option in other countries. Don’t miss out – rabbit recipes are inexpensive and the meat is lean yet flavoursome.

And of course spring lamb Try spring lamb with a cranberry, tomato and herb crust 2 garlic cloves 50 g sun-dried tomatoes 3 tbsp. cranberry sauce, 2 tsp. thyme leaves 3 racks of lamb, chined, you can ask your butcher to do this for you

Method Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Put the garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, cranberry sauce and thyme into a food processor and whizz together to a smooth paste. Season well with freshly ground black pepper.

Trim the lamb of most of the fat. Spread the cranberry mixture firmly onto the outer side of the lamb to coat evenly. Put crust side up into a roasting tin and roast in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes for medium-rare or 30 minutes for well done, covering the crust of the lamb loosely with foil if the crust starts to burn. Remove the lamb from the oven and transfer to a warm plate and leave to rest in a warm place for 5 minutes. Cut each rack of lamb into cutlets and serve with mashed potatoes and green beans.

Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus has a restaurant open to diners for lunch, served Tuesday to Friday between 12 and 2pm (orders must be placed by 1.15pm). Fine Dining menus are available every Thursday evening from 7pm to 10.30pm, but must be booked in advance. We went on Valentine’s day (actually the Thursday before), sat by a huge window, which gave a wide panorama of London from Canary Wharf to points East, and peacefully drank champagne. All the food is cooked by level three students, and waiting by level two students. Everyone wants to be a chef, and it shines out of these young faces, they work hard and want to impress. For the evening there was a themed fixed menu, featuring Consommé Pommes d’amour, perfumed with asparagus, tomato and tarragon; individual Lobster and cheese soufflé; Lover Lemon and Pink Gin Sorbet; Poussin ‘Don Giovanni’ followed by Romeo and Juliette chocolate and Strawberry Shortbread hearts. At the time, I thought, should I make allowances? After all, the restaurant is run by students... but there was no need, the quality of performance was very high indeed, and some features were excellent. Soufflés are not easy, and ours were light as clouds. The Lemon and Pink Gin Sorbet was delightful and inspired.

Food & Drink

Seasonal wine-spring recommendations by Steven Tod of Blackheath Wine Company

There are few, if any, immutable rules in matching wine with food; it is after all largely a question of taste. The wine and food should balance, with neither overpowering the other. Produce coming into season in spring offers a wonderful array of delicate, fresh flavours that need to be treated with care when thinking of wine accompaniments to avoid being completely overwhelmed. Smoked salmon

Vegetable risotto

A deliciously dry Riesling d’Alsace Meyer-Fonné brings all the citrus acidity you need to cut through the deliciously rich salmon without jarring – think of the obligatory lemon slice – thereby refreshing the palate for the next mouthful and preventing the oily fish becoming too cloying.

The risotto has a creaminess and earthiness to it that would suit a smooth white wine with a touch of minerality, whilst the spring vegetables bring a freshness and bite that would call for a lively zesty white. A Petit Chablis Dauvissat can wear those two hats with aplomp; it has the subtle citrus aromas and flinty mineral undertones to lift the ingredients of the dish yet is refined and has the requisite smoothness to complement the creamy Arborio rice.

Asparagus tart The herbaceous notes of a Sauvignon blanc Saint-Bris Felix complement the green stem asparagus perfectly. Saint-Bris is incidentally the only appellation in the whole of Burgundy that is allowed to use Sauvignon blanc, but it retains all the characteristic smoothness of the fine white wines of that region which adds another dimension to the pairing as the perfect counterpart to the creaminess of the tart filling.

Rhubarb Panna cotta

Roast spring lamb Spring lamb requires a balance be struck to complement its delicate flavour and the natural richness of the meat - it can be swamped by wine that has too much tannin or is too full bodied. A maturing left-bank Bordeaux such as a Chateau Lalande Saint-Julien is the perfect foil – the dominant Cabernet sauvignon provides silky tannins to cut through the natural fat in the meat, with all the poise, finesse and enduring length one looks for in a wine to accompany a roast dinner.

Roast quail

This recipe already has complementary flavours of sharp rhubarb and delicately spiced and creamy panna cotta, the creaminess of the latter already balancing the tartness of the former. A glass of Gewurztraminer d’Alsace Hauller has the hint of sweetness needed to contrast with the sharpness of the rhubarb, without being too cloying with the dish as a whole, and has the wonderfully delicate spiced notes of nutmeg and rosewater to echo the vanilla in the panna cotta.

Quail is delicately flavoured and slightly gamey; aggressively tannic wine needs to be avoided. A smooth burgundy Pinot noir such as an Irancy Domaine Felix, with its delicate cedar aromas and smooth, unobtrusive tannins sustain and add depth to the savoury notes of the meat without being too overbearing.

is an exchange project that will see artists from Pulchri Studio in The Hague, The Netherlands trading places and exhibiting their work at A.P.T Gallery in March and this follows the recent exchange exhibition whereby 41 APT artists recently had a show of their work at Pulchri Studio. Art Hub invites you to explore the fascinating theme of our personal relationship with

the city in two very different exhibitions.STREET.TRIP.TICK is at Bermondsey Project Space. Visually stunning, playful and punchy the show is impressive and well worth the trip. The three artists Gordon Furn, Adrian Morris-Thomas and Fritz Duffy open your eyes to the vibrancy of the street scene and the transience of our lives within the urban landscape. PSYCHO.GEOGRAPHY is a group show of ten artists at Art Hub Gallery, Creekside. The exhibition explores how the rich, fast-paced, sharp-edged reality of city life can shape our experiences, emotions and behaviour or simply slip through our consciousness leaving just a trace of a memory. Powerful, at times humorous and thought-provoking, catch this before it ends. Both shows run until (and including) Sunday 16 March. Meridian Meets Graham Crowley Graham Crowley born 1950 in Romford, Essex. Graham studied at St. Martin’s School of Art London 1968-72 and the Royal College of Art London 1972-75, and since then has held significant teaching post including Professor of Painting at the RCA 1998-2006. Moving to West Cork to live and work 2006-2010. Graham now lives and works in south east London. Why did you choose to move to West Cork, Ireland in 2006? Because my father’s family comes from West Cork and Crowley is a west of Ireland name, most prolific in west Cork and Kerry. How did this affect your painting – landscapes, striking blocks of colour? In a very significant way, it gave me subject matter and I arrived in Ireland prior to the massive economic upturn, called the Celtic Tiger. And witnessed the transformation from relative poverty into affluence in some cases. That was reflected in the landscape where people had more disposable income so they would paint their homes become more proprietorial. It was a changing society, there was confidence. Of course it is now changed back again. Now that you live in Dulwich how did you become involved with Deptford X and are you still involved with them? I’m no longer involved with Deptford X. My only connection now is with Rosalind Davis and Annabel Tilley who run the Zeitgeist Arts Project and they are involved in Deptford X. I share a studio currently with them at Goodwood Road, New Cross Gate. Your current work? Darker, less colour… Its becoming so, yes a lot of the paintings that bare the title Road Kill for instance are grey, not celebratory whereas a lot of the other paintings are affirmative and positive. I’m not a one trick pony, hopefully.

38 | www.meridian-magazine.co.uk

Why did you choose the title Road Kill? Well everywhere you go in Ireland what is left of the wildlife is mostly dead on the road. As a motorcyclist you are more aware of this. I find myself getting a shudder when I see this, as a passionate animal lover I find it painful to see them suffer or in distress. What does the future hold? Are you and your style still evolving? Yes, you only have to look at the work and it changes. Film directors making the same style of film for years would be accused of being limited or lazy. In the beginning my work was academic and then more auto biographical and then in narrative form in the Thatcher years. Painting such as ‘No such thing’ and ‘Chainstore’. I’ve been asked to exhibit in a group show at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norfolk Next exhibition-Where and when can our readers see your work? Have a look at my website www.grahamcrowley.co.uk. I have a one-man show in Dublin next followed by the Sainsbury’s exhibition on Political and social changes.

On stage Greenwich Theatre’s Artistic Director, James Haddrell

Later this month I have been asked to join a panel of speakers, alongside organisations like the Royal Opera House, Shakespeare’s Globe and Arts Council England, at a national event organised to explore how arts organisations are engaging family audiences. This is the culmination of a process which began last year when Greenwich Theatre was invited to become one of thirteen national organisations working together to create a new set of family arts standards, a code of conduct which all arts organisations working with families should aspire to, covering everything from customer service to programming, catering to building management. Along with partners from English National Ballet, the Liverpool Philharmonic and others, we spent a period of time working to develop these standards, before joining the national Family Arts Festival in October with performances of We’re Going On A Bear Hunt and the commission of a new piece of immersive theatre under the heading Me & My Nan in partnership with Greenwich Dance.

However, this family focus was not new for us. We have run the Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival for the past seven years with funding from Royal Greenwich, and we have a year round programme of theatre for children and young people. We all believe that theatre should be available for all, but in a pure business sense we also know that without engaging children in the magic of theatre when they are young, our industry could well disappear in two generations. Our hope is that the children coming to see Alice In Wonderland or Dinosaur Zoo this year will come back year on year to see shows at Greenwich Theatre with their parents, and that when they become adults and have children of their own, they will not only remember those visits and bring their children, but will also take time out to book a babysitter and spend an evening at the theatre themselves!

Going to the theatre is a special experience, but while we hold our ticket prices as close to cinema prices as possible it is not an exclusive one – going to the theatre does not have to be restricted to an annual family trip to the pantomime or a birthday treat.

Being invited to speak at the event later this month is yet another endorsement of our work with families, but the greatest endorsement is the huge growth that we have seen in family audiences right across the year. With audience figures increasing so dramatically, it seems that our ambition to hold on to those audiences and bring them back as adults with their own children may just work out.

Wave of New Homes in Woolwich will Benefit from Crossrail 2014 will see approximately 450 new homes released at Berkeley’s Royal Arsenal Riverside scheme in Woolwich. The first wave of new homes includes a premier collection of apartments in Cannon Square, the development’s best connected quarter, directly above the forthcoming Woolwich Crossrail station. Cannon Square is comprised of six blocks and Vantage, a 20-storey residential block with fabulous far-reaching views, will be the third to offer new homes, following the success of establishing phases. Next month (29 – 30 March), the Vantage collection, a mix of 144 Manhattan, one, two and three bedroom apartments, will allow residents to secure a home in one of south east London’s fastest growing centres. Royal Arsenal Riverside is a major beneficiary of the Crossrail services that are due to commence from the town-facing edge of the scheme in 2019. A recent CBRE report names Woolwich among the top 10 Crossrail winners alongside Farringdon, Acton, Paddington and other well-placed stations across the capital. The new rail network, according to CBRE, will add around 13% to house prices along the Crossrail line by the time it becomes operational in 2018. But in Woolwich, where the average house price is £272,136, the increase is expected to tip the scales at 19%. Berkeley Homes played a significant role in campaigning a Crossrail station in Woolwich, and as such has become a forerunner in transport-led regeneration and housing in south east London. Moreover, the Crossrail network and the provision of high-quality housing are both fundamental in supporting the area’s growth in population, which is forecast to almost double between 2006 and 2026. Homes at Royal Arsenal Riverside, including those soon to be available in Vantage, Cannon Square, are a valuable component in meeting the housing needs within the borough.

Many Vantage properties will feature a balcony or terrace to provide outdoor living space and provide flexible layouts for comfortable apartment living. Apartments range in size from 472 q ft to 1252 sq ft, and the interiors have been expertly crafted by leading London designer Tara Bernerd, whose expertise has been sought out by some of the world’s biggest names, including Aspinalls and Marco Pierre White. Residents will also have full access to the excellent on-site leisure facilities on offer at Royal Arsenal Riverside, including a gym, car share club, Young’s gastropub, museum and café as well as a Tesco Express and MedicX pharmacy. Royal Arsenal Riverside has superb existing transport links into the city and beyond. The DLR takes just six minutes to London City Airport, 27 minutes to Bank and 20 minutes to Canary Wharf, which is also under 30 minutes away by Thames Clippers services from the on-site Woolwich Arsenal Pier. Commuters can also take National Rail train services from Woolwich Arsenal, only 300 metres from the development, arriving at London Bridge in 23 minutes and Charing Cross in 29 minutes. Prices for apartments at Vantage will be released at the end of March. For more information, visit the on-site Sales & Marketing Suite on No.1 Street, Woolwich, SE18 6FB, open daily between 10am to 6pm with a late night opening on Thursdays until 8pm. Alternatively, call 0844 417 8741 or visit www.royalarsenalriverside.co.uk.
