HELLO There is something special about walking down a blossom-lined street in SE London, with the spring sun shining and the petals falling like confetti…well, we think so anyway. You’ll see from the cover that we are big blossom fans and it’s not just us; cherry blossom is loved worldwide, representing the fragility and the beauty of life, it’s a symbol of love and new beginnings too – so perfect for this issue. When it comes to new beginnings, organising a wedding is pretty exciting stuff. We know how much hard work, planning and stress can go into organising your big day, so in our spring wedding special, we have taken a look at some local treasures to inspire you to find that ideal local venue. We’ve also got together with some local businesses that can help with the finer details, such as flowers, photography and quirky items like photo booths. Love local takes us to Blackheath Standard, this issue, as we visit some of the independent shops that make it such a wonderfully vibrant place to wander around. If you haven’t visited before or haven’t been for a while, we give you the lowdown on where to head to first…and there’s much more to discover once you are there. Continuing our love local pages, we visited Blackheath Village and spoke with Eve Blackman from Good Looks, Phil Eisenberg from Sparklysmile and Mark Elphicke from Locale about their local businesses, which have all been serving the community for a collective 89 years!

In interiors, we hear why wallpaper is back with a vengeance and how it can breathe new life into tired rooms. Whether you’re looking for something sophisticated, tranquil or warm & cosy - we have some ideas; from painted wall papers to faux fabrics. Now we’ll soon be spending more time in our gardens (hopefully), we take a look at what you need to do in your garden now and inspire you with information about open garden squares weekend, too. In food and drink, our independent food writers visit Buenos Aires Restaurant and Al Pancino at the Spread Eagle. You can also win dinner for two at Al Pancino at the Spread Eagle up to the value of £60, so get online at www.meridian-magazine. co.uk/win to enter. There is also the chance to snap up a £150 voucher to spend at Blackheath Royal Standard, lifestyle boutique, The Voewood.

Dress your Bare Walls with the Latest Trends Do your magnolia walls bore you witless? Tired of sticky fingers leaving dark marks on your neutral staircase wall?

Wallpaper is the perfect way to bring life into a your home; and with advancements in digital art printing, there are many options available to replicate a work of art for your walls. After all, wallpaper is about ‘art imitating life’, along with an endless array of possibilities… This year, the demand for faux wallpapers is increasing, as digital technology can create realistic qualities of wood, brick, concrete and stone. Some designs can replicate the fine detail of fabric and leather, to the point you cannot discern the real from the faux.

Van Gogh blossoming almond trees wallpaper Wallpaper is back with a vengeance. Whether you want the sophisticated look for your City property and lifestyle, a peaceful and tranquil look for your country cottage, a bespoke mural for your children’s playroom or bedroom, or just a warm and cosy feel for your home, there are so many styles waiting to inspire you. Wallpaper manufacturers offer far more choice, colour and texture these days and there are some very contemporary ranges on the market. Decorating is not as easy as it looks though, especially when it comes to installing wallpaper. If you want a professional, expert job with no headaches, look no further: John Green Décor Ltd is a local company of experienced decorators who undertake all aspects of painting and decorating, including wallpapering. They have been operating for over 15 years, during that time John has become a Fellow of the Dulux Select Decorators Scheme, a ‘Which?’ Trusted Trader, and Trust Mark approved.

If you’re a lover of art and appreciate the intricacies of original work, then hand-painted wallpaper is an upscale and tasteful trend with classic style. Wallpapers with hand-painted art create subtle and serene atmospheric effects in your interiors, illustrating delicate and wispy florals and other natural motifs on a large scale. What is exciting about this lavish trend of painted wallpapers is that they are elegantly high-class and sophisticated. They also allow you to achieve an expensive look for your interiors without breaking the bank. www.meridian-magazine.co.uk

Beauty Treatments at Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus You may know that Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus has a restaurant staffed by student which is open to all. Did you know, they also have a hair and beauty salon, which offers treatments to members of the public at reasonable prices, too? The students in the beauty department will qualify as hairdressers and beauty therapists but as part of the course they need to gain experience of putting what they have learnt into practise. Once they have reached a stage of confidence and knowledge, they can work with the public. The salon offers a comprehensive range of treatments from facials to manicures and waxing, all carried out under the watchful eye of the tutor. I choose a facial to review and was introduced to my therapist, Aaliyah. She’s half way through her beauty course and really enjoying it; and in her second year she might move on to a course in make-up. Once she had asked the obligatory questions and she checked for my skin type, it was time to lie back and relax. She was very competent and explained each of the stages while cleansing, toning and moisturising my face. A very professional job done, and with post treatment feedback, the students build up their experience and this all helps with their final exams. Smile... Phil Eisenberg of Sparklysmile talks about his family dental business and that next year will be the company’s 50th anniversary Your father, Joseph was a dentist, did he influence you to choose a career in dentistry? I made a conscious decision to become a dentist but as a child I remember I would walk around Blackheath Village with my father and people would wave and say hello and I thought, ‘I like that; my dad must be famous’. I wanted to be like him. Was your father’s practice based in the village? His practice was where the Blackheath Locksmith is now, at the top of the village. He was there from 1967 until 1974, when he moved into larger premises at the present site. When did you start practising? I qualified from Guy’s Dental Hospital in 1988, and then worked here with my father until he retired at the age of 74, when I took over the practice. Your practice isn’t the white clinical interior that one expects... My father was responsible for the brown tinted windows; He’d seen a Vidal Sasson salon in central London and wanted that look for the practice. The eclectic artwork adds my mark to the practice. Dentistry has changed dramatically in the last thirty years... The practice keeps abreast of the technological advances being made in dentistry, to the point that I don’t use the methods that I was taught at Guys, anymore. Training also has to be ongoing to keep our skills up-todate. Air abrasion replaced the drill and we now use intra-oral cameras, which allow the patient to see their teeth in detail and we can talk them through any procedure. With the use of the 3D models, we can show the before and after of teeth straightening before the process starts. Is modern dentistry more about cosmetic and preventative care? Yes, to maintain healthy teeth you need to look after the gums. We‘ve introduced hygienists, endodontists, periodontists and the implant team to the practice to offer the services that our patients need. Dentistry and beauty seems to have merged, what else do you offer? The Wy10 whitening procedure to correct stained teeth and the Smile Lift technique to remove fine lines on the face. At present what’s the most popular treatment? Braces. Especially in adults who should have had their teeth straightened as a child, but didn’t. They want to change the look of their teeth and improve their appearance. What is the best thing about working in Blackheath Village? With being here for fifty years next year, the Blackheath community is important to me. I live nearby and can walk to work, wearing my trademark white jeans, just like my father did.

Keeping up the Good Looks Eve Blackman, owner of Good Looks tells us how it all started and how the beauty business has evolved into the high tech business of today How and when did you get into the beauty business? My husband, Peter Spigel, was a celebrity hairdresser, and when he moved to Washington DC with his hairdressing business, I went with him. Life in America in the 60s was a tumultuous time, and very exciting.

What was the first brand you affiliated with? Guinot was the first range of products used and then other market leaders followed. I had hired a therapist but wanted to be more hands on, so I took a two year beauty therapy course, followed by specialist training for the more technical procedures and qualified as a hair colourist.

While Peter concentrated on his famous clientele, I found work with the Club Managers of America Assoc, near the Whitehouse; a far cry from the beauty business but it honed my business skills.

What happened next? I sold off the other businesses, so I could concentrate on Good Looks and making it a flagship beauty salon with cutting-edge therapies. As it states on our website, we are a progressive anti ageing and beauty clinic, sourcing the most advanced products and equipment available – staying ahead of the field and providing beauty services for both women and men.

When we returned to the UK six years later, I became more involved in Peter’s businesses: five salons based in central London. By now, the beauty practices that were common place in America were slowly appearing in London. When did you open Good Looks? I lost Peter in a diving accident and had a young son to care for. I was still running the businesses, but I wanted something of my own. I’d been told of a salon in Blackheath Village that was up for sale, and as I lived nearby it seemed ideal. So, in 1979, Good looks opened and immediately proved popular with the local wives of city businessmen. We had the products and therapies that helped maintain their looks for their high maintenance life styles.

Technology plays a large part in new therapies, what’s trending at the moment? The trend for us is anything non-invasive that gives the client what they want, great results! Venus Freeze is an FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment for cellulite and loose skin on the face, neck and body. It uses radio frequency and magnetic pulses to stimulate the generation of new collagen and elastin fibres over a period of time. While the Ellipse IPL, is for permanent hair reduction, skin rejuvenation, facial thread vein removal, and acne clearance. Non-surgical facelifts are achievable with the latest Caci Synergy Non-Surgical Face Lift, or Guinot’s new Cellular Energy, skin tightening facial.

s

Eve Blackman outside Good Looks What else is popular in the salon? Facials and Shellac nails, which are durable and long lasting are popular all year round, and we have just bought in the LVL Lash Lift and the new Lava Shell massage. Do you see yourself easing up? If I lost interest in the achievements of the beauty business, maybe, but I’m still fascinated by this innovative industry and enjoy working in it. What is the best thing about working in Blackheath Village The fact that my local client base is now into its third generation and I can say I really know my clients and their families. Good Looks has been a Ginot Crown Award winning salon for seven year running. Also a registered member of the IIAA (International Institute of Anti-Ageing), which can only be joined by invitation as a recognised front line anti-ageing clinic. They are also a member of the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists.

Eating Out in Greenwich We sent out two of our independent food writers to review two up and coming restaurants in Greenwich Buenos Aires Restaurant

Al Pancino at The Spread Eagle

Reviewed by Lucy Husband.

Reviewed by Nicola Berry.

My husband and I are always keen to try interesting and unusual cuisines and so, when we were in Greenwich visiting the observatory with our 8-yearold daughter, we jumped at the chance to try Buenos Aires, the Argentinian restaurant on Nelson Road. We were greeted warmly and we able to choose our table – we decided to sit out the back of the restaurant where there is a large, bright and welcoming room. From our seats we could see an attractive courtyard garden, complete with a barbecue, which we both agreed would be a great place to eat in the summer.

When the Spread Eagle closed its doors at the end of 2013, there was much consternation as to the fate of what is one of Greenwich’s oldest buildings. Step forward local hero, Nicholas Nomikos, who has realised his dream of running an independently owned, family-friendly restaurant in the shape of Al Pancino. Nicholas has grand plans for this architecturally stunning building. No corporate look here; instead the whole place oozes style and character (masterminded by Nicholas himself). I like the fact that the tables are wellspaced and offer seating for couples and groups; expect tables in the new courtyard garden to be popular once the sun shines. Refurbishment has been a labour of love. The deli, bar and main dining room are now finished, whilst the upstairs room - still a work in progress - will provide a wonderful space for private parties.

The menu was clear and mouth-watering, as were the daily specials (beef ribs or a baked bass). We decided to start with empanadas (Argentinian pasties £3.70 each) and we ordered a carne (beef), a jamon e queso (ham and cheese) and an espinacas (spinach, goats cheese and onions) to share. They were tasty and obviously homemade.

And so to the food. The Italianinspired menu itself may be small but it’s no cliche to say it’s perfectly formed. Nicholas is really proud of the fact that much of the meat and cheese comes locally from Royal Hill. I can personally attest to the quality of the meat; I had a truly melt-inthe-mouth sliced rib eye steak with rocket, parmesan and cold grilled vegetables & peppercorn auce; good value at £14.50.

Our daughter chose steak and chips from the children’s menu, which arrived with our starters. She ate the lot and I was pleased to see the chips were also obviously home made. The steak was tender and well cooked - perfect for a child.

The excellent ‘weekend brunch’ menu (also available during the week) includes poached eggs with avocado & toasted bread £7.50: spaghetti arabiata £7.50 and an outstanding, home-made pannacotta £5.00. Finally, Nicholas is passionate about the quality of his coffee. Trust me; it’s very good.

For the mains, my husband and I both decided to have 8oz rib eye steaks cooked on the Josper grill; he had alioli sauce with his and I had a delicious chimichirri sauce with mine (oil, parsley, garlic, oregano, vinegar). On the side, we shared A ‘ rgentinian style chips’ (more garlic and parsley) and the day’s vegetable special - purple sprouting broccoli. It was delicious (my only minor criticism was that the broccoli was slightly over cooked to my taste). We washed it all down with a Malma – an Argentinian Sauvignon Blanc. Dessert was trifle for me (homemade), bread and butter pudding for my husband (homemade) and ice cream for my daughter. We finished with strong, nutty espressos and a bill of £110, which we thought was quite reasonable for 3 courses for 3 people, and wine. The service was friendly and efficient and we will definitely be returning to try out the more of the menu.

Going Local with Locale Mark Elphicke invites us in…

Mark Elphicke

Your job title is Director but how would you describe your role at Locale? Well, it’s a very hands-on role despite the title! Restaurants need a lot of care and attention and delivering consistency and quality is the key to growth. So I work hard with Amanda, the General Manager and Paolo the Head Chef to ensure we can always deliver great food and service. That means testing, training and being on the floor when our guests are in the restaurant. Office time is about marketing planning, whether it be database building, social media, e-bulletins or planning events, of course a lot goes on behind the scenes. Locale, Blackheath opened in 2004 and has evolved over the last 12 years, what have been the most significant changes to the restaurant? Despite being here for 12 years nothing stands still for long and the restaurant business in London is fast paced and constantly evolving. 18 months ago we decided to close, refurbish and reposition ourselves with a new logo, new décor, new kitchen equipment and a brand new statement bar. The Italian formula was feeling a little tired and many of the local restaurants were doing a similar thing. So, although we have an Italian pedigree we evolved the offer and now focus on three things done well – ‘steak, seafood and cocktails’. This is about quality steak and meat cuts, fresh fish, lobster and seafood all cooked in our charcoal oven. For the bar, it’s about employing and training proper mixologists

and making signature and classic cocktails with only the best ingredients. Jack, our cocktail guru, is constantly scouring the best bars in town to keep up with trends and latest products. We want to deliver a West-end restaurant experience for local people. 12 months ago we built a separate sushi kitchen, employed a sushi chef and we now serve sushi seven days a week. It’s been a great success. On your website you describe the restaurant as, ‘local neighbourhood dining’ are most of your diners local?

Do you have any plans for the future?

Yes and no. Midweek we are certainly full of locals and regulars and we see many familiar faces and that’s how it should be. We chat, listen to feedback and from this point of view we are the great local restaurant everyone would want around the corner. Over the weekend, we draw a crowd from further afield coming to celebrate family occasion and birthdays, date nights, parties or to listen to live music. Friday and Saturday night is a great atmosphere.

We have many plans. The first is to extend and improve our private party function business, offering a more bespoke service for those looking to celebrate or have a business meeting. Secondly, we are extending our live music programme from every Sunday to some Friday nights. On the food side, we are going to extend our seafood offer to include Alaskan king crab, scallops in the shell and our signature ‘mussels and clams’ done in the Josper grill.

You offer a range of discounts and special offers, are they proving popular? We run offers mid-week, giving our guests the chance to sample what we do for less. Steak night on Mondays, for example, where you can get any steak for half price is extremely popular. But most of our offers are sent to our database of regular and loyal customers of which we have over 15,000.

At last year’s Edinburgh Festival, as well as directing one production and mentoring a number of others, I was lucky enough to be asked to act as an assessor for the Musical Theatre Network Development Award. The award is given to the company considered to be presenting the most exciting new music theatre at the festival, challenging what we all expect to see in a musical, doing something new with the form, the music or the storytelling, making us question what a musical is. The award was given to Middle Child Theatre Company from Hull for their show, WEEKEND ROCKSTARS. This answered all of the requirements of the award – you could be forgiven for thinking, when you enter the theatre, that you’ve arrived at a music gig instead of a theatre show. The band set-up remains throughout and the music owes as much to UK indie bands of the last 15 years as it does to classics of musical theatre, but as the band play their way through their set, the lead singer Terry tells the story of a life spiraling out of control, backed by a series of theatrical projections. The result is an incredibly exciting piece of theatre, performed with an energy and commitment usually associated with pop music, and the adrenalin is infectious.

Since seeing the show for the awards I have been determined to find a way to bring the company to Greenwich, but this show does not really belong on the Greenwich Theatre stage. We are lucky to have such a well-equipped, beautiful auditorium, but watching WEEKEND ROCKSTARS you have to feel as if you are at a music gig – so for this show we are heading out of the building. We will be presenting one performance at the Amersham Arms in New Cross, a pub renowned for the its current music programming, and for two nights at the Tramshed in Woolwich, a space far more intimate than ours that has been used for everything from comedy to music to theatre over the years. WEEKEND ROCKSTARS is one of those shows that takes you by surprise, and that you can’t stop talking about afterwards. I hope our audiences will come on a journey with us to these new venues and grab the opportunity to see this unique, award-winning piece of theatre.

Why Should I Get my Dog Microchipped

LOVE LOCA L

If local authorities catch dogs without a microchip, the owners could face a fine of up to £500.

All dog owners in England, Scotland and Wales had until April to have their dog microchipped and to register them with a government compliant microchip database. After that date, all puppies must be microchipped and recorded on a microchip database by the time they are 8 weeks old. Any changes to an owner’s contact details must be updated on their microchip database to ensure compliance with the law. If a dog owner subsequently moves, changes contact telephone number, etc. then the dog is no longer considered microchipped under the new law and enforcement can be taken. What is a microchip? A pet microchip is a tiny computer chip that’s about the size of a grain of rice. It contains a unique code that matches up to your pet’s details.

Microchipping a dog is a quick and simple procedure. The chip is inserted under a dog’s skin, usually around the scruff of the neck, using a needle. It takes seconds. Dogs can be checked for a microchip using a handheld electronic scanner. When this is waved over the dog’s neck, the scanner will recognise the unique information held inside the chip. A microchip is a permanent form of identification. As long as the details are kept up-to-date, you can always be contacted if your dog goes missing. When dogs are found straying they are collected by the local authority dog warden and kept for seven days. If your microchipped dog goes missing and is taken in by the dog warden, your contact details will be easily found and you can

come and collect them straight away, even if their collar and ID tag have fallen off. But without identification telling the dog warden who your dog belongs to, they cannot let you know your beloved pet has been found. After seven days your dog can be passed to a re-homing charity, such as Blue Cross, to be found a loving new home, or they can be euthanised by the local authority. Each year, the Blue Cross look after many dogs that obviously have come from loving homes as they are friendly, affectionate and have had training. But sadly, without a microchip, they have no way of reuniting them with their owners, so they find them new loving families instead, even though they know that somewhere out there a heartbroken owner is missing them terribly. www.bluecross.org.uk
