HELLO The clocks have gone back, the bonfires are stacked and waiting to be lit, and thousands of carved pumpkins are still lurking in doorways across south east London - it can only be the November issue. If you are already starting to feel that festive spirit creeping up on you, and you want to get planning, we have a few things in mind… Nothing gets the festival cheer surging more than seeing Christmas lights being switched on? We have all the details for events all over SE London, including which ones include a free cheeky glass of bubbles or mince pies, craft stalls and farmers’ markets. We also have some great gift ideas, all of which can all be picked up at local, independent shops and which make for a unique Christmas present. From screen prints to luxury socks, beauty gifts and much more, there’s no need to head out to the West End this Christmas. If you still haven’t taken our advance from last issue, and are dawdling with plans for the Christmas party (tut, tut), we have some ideas for you in food and drink. We also bring you the latest food and restaurant news, and a review that will have you simply drooling. In fashion we salute this season’s must have...the velvet dress. If you’re looking to make a big impression this Christmas, steer towards this seriously wearable and sumptuous fabric to really turn on the charm.

Of course, this time of year can also get hectic and pretty stressful, so we’ve got some great tips on how to beat stress by understanding how it manifests and which foods can help. If you love to head outdoors to de-stress, you’ll be inspired to get out and enjoy the autumnal hues, as Nicola Berry takes a closer look at the villages of south east London. But, if it’s the indoors you’re craving for – you’ll love our interiors this month, it’s all about cosying up with the wood fire cracking away. What dark autumn evenings are made for, surely! We take a look at how to give your living room an inviting glow and the things you need to know before investing in a wood burning stove. All this, plus some great competitions, including a change to win £50 off voucher at the new branch of Buenos Aires Café – what are you waiting for!

Enjoy the issue, The Meridian Team xx

Royal Borough in the Top Ten

Royal Greenwich primary schools are among the best in England according to the latest national assessment results for seven-year-olds, published by the Government. In reading, writing and maths, Royal Greenwich is in the top ten boroughs in England, for the proportion of pupils achieving Level 2B+ (the higher range of the ‘expected standard’ for 7 year olds) at Key Stage 1. The Royal Borough is also in the top ten boroughs in England, for the proportion of pupils who exceeded the expected standard, and were assessed as Level 3 or above in all three subjects. The achievement builds on the excellent start that children receive in the early years.

COSY UP Roasting chestnuts on an open fire might seem like a pipe dream, especially in a smokeless zone, but it needn’t be... Log burning fires, smokeless fuels and state of the art gas fire can create that toasty desired effect that we all long for on a cold winters night, curling up in front of a glowing fire. Creating the glowing welcoming home ahead of the Christmas season will help transform your home into the only place to be, and all you friends and family will want an invite.

Beautiful bespoke hand made kitchens from The Dovetail Joint

Many parts of the UK are smoke control areas where you can’t emit smoke from a chimney unless you’re burning an authorised fuel or using exempt appliances, eg burners or stoves. A woodburning stove can be installed in homes with no chimneys. You need to have a flue installed for it to function and this can be run up through the roof with fireboarding and a protective cage. If the flue runs through a room above, the cage can look a bit unsightly, which is why most people prefer to use one in conjunction with a chimney. Stoves are highly efficient with many running at up to 87% efficiency, giving them an edge on open fires which run at about 25%. However, like open fires, they need a constant stock of seasoned wood for burning. Try popping a damp log, which you picked up on a walk on and you will fill the room with smoke. You can get multi-fuel stoves and stoves which burn coal, corn, wood wax fire logs, peat and oil though, so wood supply needn’t be a concern.

The Dovetail Joint in Forest Hill has been manufacturing high quality, bespoke kitchens and other built-in furniture since 1990, using the customer’s ideas and taste as the starting point in the creation of each unique kitchen. Furthermore, as a small company with minimum overheads, they can afford to price their bespoke furniture very competitively.

With a recent rise in popularity, manufacturers have really upped their game when it comes to design, so finding one to suit your home is not difficult.

The Dovetail Joint will design an original layout considering every aspect of space, light and function. They have no production line and the kitchens are hand made in their workshop by their own craftsmen and guaranteed for five years.

The good news is that if you have a chimney you can choose pretty much any type of fire. However, if you are going for a fire, which makes use of the chimney, it needs to be in good working order with a functioning flue. Remember to have your chimney swept by a professional sweep (either a Guild of Master Sweeps or NACS member) at least once a year if you use smokeless fuel and at least twice if you are burning wood or coal. Never light a fire for the first time without having the chimney swept. It may be blocked and harmful fumes and smoke may enter the room. Just curl up and enjoy.

With a kitchen from The Dovetail Joint you get much more than an efficient work space. You get a room that is tailored to your lifestyle. It will be tough enough to withstand almost anything you can throw at it and stylishly equipped for the most ambitious cook. If you would like a beautiful, practical, hardwearing, competitively priced bespoke kitchen or any other built in furniture to enhance and improve your home, call The Dovetail Joint or visit their website at www.thedovetailjoint.co.uk Tel:020 8291 5578

Village Life

The Bickley pub garden

What do Blackheath, Bromley, Charlton, Chislehurst, Eltham and Greenwich all have in common? Apart from being great places to live and work, they’re all part of the area that we know and love here at Meridian Magazine. Nicola Berry takes a look. To many, parts of SE London just blend in to one another, but ask a resident of, say, Greenwich or Eltham and they’ll tell you that each has its own, very distinctive character. Blackheath and Chislehurst, for instance, still pride themselves on being a village. Once upon a time Greenwich, which can trace its origins back to Saxon times when it was called green wic (the word ‘wic’ meaning a port), was simply a little fishing village. Boats were the main form of transport for hundreds of years until 1840, when the first trains began carrying passengers from London Bridge to Greenwich in just under 12 minutes. Fast forward 175 years and Greenwich has a new village, albeit a rather large one. Millennium Village, which lies at the southern end of the 300 acre Greenwich Peninsula, is a new development of more than 2,700 homes. It’s part of the ambitious Thames Gateway regeneration project and with new schools, open spaces, the O2 and quick links to the City, it’s seen as a template for 21st Century living. Bromley’s status rose in the 10th Century when it was chosen by the Bishops of Rochester as their base for visitors to London. However, it managed to maintain a semi-rural feel until the 1850s, when a new railway station was built at Bromley South. This encouraged a building boom and almost overnight Bromley became a town of substance. In the 1990s an executive from the Royal Fine Art Commission described Bromley High Street as ‘the worst example of urban architecture I’ve ever seen’ and back then, he probably had a point. In 2015 things are very different. The new St Mark’s Square (due for completion mid 2016) will give Bromley South some much needed pzazz. It’s almost a village in itself, with a mix of 200 private and affordable apartments, cafés, restaurants and a nine screen cinema - all set around a landscaped public square.

The village of Eltham was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, although recent Roman remains suggest much earlier settlements. Its most famous resident was Henry VIII, who lived there as a child, but today it’s known as a pleasant residential town with plenty of parks and woodland (The Green Chain Walk runs right through the area). An annual Winter Arts Festival takes place every November. Charlton Village has a fairly colourful history. It was famous for The Horn Fair (or Charlton Fair) which was held on the 18th October each year and had a certain reputation for lawlessness. An independent sense of spirit still remains; the High Street is without a ‘big name’ coffee shop and Charlton House provides a focal point for the community and its many activities. And so we come to Blackheath and Chislehurst. Both are immensely proud of their village status and this is reflected in their high streets, with plenty of independently owned shops and cafés. Commons are cherished: duck ponds are cared for - much as they have been for hundreds of years. There are even organised walks: on Wednesday, 11th November, the Trustees of Chislehurst & St. Paul’s Cray Commons and Head Keeper, Jonathan, are holding an Autumn Stroll around the Common (meet outside the Bull’s Head at 2 pm).

With picture postcard good looks, Blackheath Village with its historic windswept heath, dating back to the Middle Ages and overlooked by magnificent Georgian and Victorian houses is hard to beat. But Tranquil Vale, the appropriately named high street, comes a close second, with a florist, baker, greengrocer and butcher plus several independent stores. Straddling two postcodes, SE3 and SE10, and two boroughs, Lewisham and Greenwich you can be at work in the City or Canary Wharf in less than half an hour. www.meridian-magazine.co.uk

De-stress yourself on National Stress Awareness Day, 4 November We are stressed more than ever. Balancing work, social and home lives is making us increasingly anxious and stressed. Chronic stress causes sleeping troubles, poor diet choices, low mood and health problems. We can’t eliminate it from our lives but we can definitely control the way it affects us. Millions of years ago our bodies were designed to react quickly to danger. Just like wild animals, we were on constant alert so we could run or fight, if threatened. When your brain thinks your life is in danger, it stimulates the release of adrenaline and cortisol. This fight or flight response is incredibly clever and thoroughly efficient. It provides instant energy for 5-10 minutes, allowing you to react swiftly to dangerous situations. These days, many of us live under chronic stress. However, our bodies can’t distinguish between late trains, missed appointments, spiralling debt, infuriating work colleagues and truly life-threatening stress. You may not be able to control the stress, but you can control how it affects you physically by making a few changes to your lifestyle. Maintaining steady blood sugar levels is key to stabilizing mood. Ensure you have a small meal every 2-3 hours that contains protein. As the blood sugar steadies, so will the mood swings – reduced adrenaline levels will automatically make you feel happier and calmer inside. Chose your snacks wisely – soybeans, dark chocolate, bananas and avocado are a good source of magnesium, which helps with efficient energy production while also helping to calm the nervous system. Whole-grain carbs, such as rye crisp breads, help regulate levels of serotonin, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter that helps us remain calm.’ Certain nutrients can be very helpful in reducing stress levels. ‘Go for the B vitamins, especially B5 for stress relief and energy, magnesium (nature’s tranquiliser) for relaxation and sleep, chromium for blood sugar balance, L-theanine for reducing anxiety and finally Siberian Ginseng, which acts as a tonic to the adrenal glands. Eat yourself Happy!

Francis Chappell & Sons A Brief History by Emma Sparre-Slater

1840 was an eventful year. Queen Victoria married her cousin, Albert, survived an assassination attack and had her image used on the first ever postage stamp; it saw the births of Thomas Hardy and John Stainer; the openings of Kings College Hospital and Nunhead Cemetery and the foundations laid of both Nelson’s column and the Palace of Westminster; Livingstone departed for Africa; Beau Brummell died and Charles Dickens published the first instalment of The Old Curiosity Shop. Amidst all the newsworthy events, a much smaller moment of history took place in South East London. John Chappell, a nineteen-year-old Deptford based cabinetmaker set himself up in business and founded the firm that is today best known by his son’s name – Francis Chappell & Sons, Funeral Directors & Monumental Masons.

ME RID IA N LO CAL Francis was born in 1862 to John and Martha Chappell. Just thirteen years later he joined his father and his older brothers, John Junior and Edwin in the family firm. Ten years later, in 1885, it appears that Francis had already started using his own name as a ‘furnishing undertaker’ at No 1 Belmont Hill, Lee. This address was also his family home and remained as a functioning funeral home right up until the late 1970’s, early 80’s, when it was vacated due to subsidence. The business was relocated to the opposite side of the road, where it remains to this day. Edwin Chappell died, aged just 27, in 1887. He is buried in what was to become the family grave in Brockley Cemetery, just opposite one of the family businesses. The building is now a barber’s but still bears a stone panel that reads ‘AD 1840 J. Chappell & Sons’. John senior died on 26th February 1893. His address was given as 251 Lewisham High Road and, according to his will, he left his estate to his two remaining sons, John Junior and Francis, both of whom are listed as ‘undertakers’. He joined his wife, Martha and son, Edwin, in the family grave. Francis had four children, two sons and two daughters. Of his sons, it was only Stanley that followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the family firm in 1905 when he was fourteen years old. By 1906, John Chappell & Sons, presumably under the care of John Junior, operated eight funeral homes across South East London, in Deptford, Blackheath, Greenwich, Lewisham, Brockley and Sydenham. These businesses were complimented by those trading as Francis Chappell & Sons; by 1915, Francis Chappell & Sons were operating out of nine premises, Beckenham, Lewisham, two in Eltham, Lee, Catford, Forest Hill, Sydenham, and Brighton. John Chappell Junior died in 1917. By 1934, ‘Chappell’s’ was the single largest network of funeral homes in the country. By 1936, John’s name had disappeared from the shop fronts and the business operated solely as Francis Chappell & Sons. Francis retired in 1939, passing the reins to his son, Stanley, but was the guest of honour at a centenary dinner that was held in 1940. Francis died in 1949, in Chichester, where he was buried. He was 87 years old. Stanley’s son, Rex joined the company in 1946. Rex had just left the RAF and spent his early years with the firm in the masonry department. The company was expanding, and established firms such as WJ Gleaves & Son, Messant & Sons of Thomas Street, Woolwich, had joined

33

the organisation. Stanley retired in 1958 and Rex continued to expand the business with three branches of FA Albin (Lewisham, Downham and Bromley) and two branches of J Humberston & Sons (Bromley and Orpington). Stanley died in 1963. The business continued to grow, with Rex’s son, Lee, joining the firm with the remit to acquire more funeral homes; H W Simpson of Walworth, Donald Hind at Erith and Longhurst (Undertakers) of Epsom in Surrey were all purchased in the early 1970’s. In 1974, Francis Chappell & Sons, itself, was sold to a company called Musical and Plastics Industries, thus ending almost 140 years of Chappell family ownership but only a few years later it was sold again to the Great Southern Group. It was now that both Rex and Lee chose to leave the company. The Great Southern Group was a family run firm that had been founded as a cemetery, crematorium and land company. They had opened Streatham Park Cemetery in 1909, and the South London Crematorium in 1936. The Group diversified into funeral directing in 1972 with the acquisition of the London Necropolis Company, who specialised in exhumations, and the Kingston based firm of Frederick W Paine. Further acquisitions followed throughout the 70’s with A E Greenfield & Son of East Croydon and Upper Norwood; W Cullen & Sons ltd; Maxwell Brothers and Dowsett Jenkins, both Streatham based firms, and Leverton Funeral Service of Dartford all joining Great Southern. Throughout this time, Chappell’s local head office remained in Lewisham, but a compulsory purchase order saw this building close its doors for the final time in the late 1990’s. Operational activities were transferred to H W Simpson of Walworth and the administrative activities to Boundary Place in Oprington. In August 1994, the Great Southern Group was purchased by Service Corporation International (SCI). This was an American funeral group who spread across Europe and Australia. From being the largest network of funeral offices in the country in 1934, Francis Chappell & Sons was now part of the largest funeral network in the world. The sheer size of the company was unwieldy and in 2002, SCI accepted an offer from the British Management team, and Dignity PLC was born, bringing the organisation back into British ownership.

The name of Francis Chappell & Sons, or simply ‘Chappell’s’ as it is known locally, continues to be a byword for tradition, respect and service. Some of the staff worked under Rex and the Chappell family still own some of the buildings that the business continues to use. Café Wrattens

Is it acceptable to begin a review with cake? In the case of Café Wrattens’ divine chocolate cake, I think it is. At last I’ve found a proper home-made chocolate cake to rival my mum’s. Dense, chocolatey and not too sweet, it’s a very reasonable £2 a slice and just one of many reasons to visit Wrattens’ brand new café in Chislehurst High Street.

unusual; my zingy beetroot, goat’s cheese and walnut salad being a tasty example. Coffee lovers will rejoice in the fact that the coffee comes from Cornish roasters Origin, which is also stocked by Selfridges. On the day of my visit the café was doing a roaring trade in hot chocolate.

The manager is Cheeta Rawlings, who many will remember from her time at Blackheath Cooks. Cheeta heads up the dedicated team responsible for Wrattens’ excellent new lunchtime menu; a wholesome selection of snacks, salads, open sandwiches, soups and hearty casseroles which will rotate on a regular basis.

In case anyone reading this remembers the old Wrattens, be prepared for a pleasant surprise. The new Wrattens is a visionary partnership between owner Guy Osborn and Chislehurst agency, Nugget Design. Sleek, contemporary and welcoming, both the café and adjacent shop (with an event space upstairs) are a really stylish addition to the high street. And the chocolate cake is available to take away!

Head chef, Christopher Hackett has had 12 years’ experience in food, which started as soon as he left school, when he went straight to college to study hospitality and then onto Thames Valley University. During this time he also took an apprenticeship at Conran Restaurants which ignited his passion for food. After this, he was honoured to receive the title of ‘Young Chef of the Year,’ in 2008. He then went on to work and gain great experience from some of the finest restaurants in London, including Fat Duck, Bluebird and The Savoy. In 2009, he was one of the lucky few to be selected for the BBC2 show ‘The Restaurant’, where he was given the great privilege to work alongside Raymond Blanc, who mentored him throughout the show. Finishing in 2nd place, he found that this experience gave him the confidence and drive to open up his own café, The Terrace Café. In 2011, Christopher then went on to establish Terrace Catering, which offers catering for a wide range of events, from intimate private gatherings to lavish weddings, looking to deliver food with the upmost quality. The Terrace Café has started to hold ‘pop up’ restaurant nights, the next is Thanksgiving event on 29th November and a festive Christmas themed night on the 13th of December. DROP IN CLASSES FOR ADULTS Andrew Pollard and Antony Spargo in Robin Hood

JAMES HADDRELL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF GREENWICH THEATRE, CELEBRATES A DECADE OF PANTOMIME SUCCESS As pantomime season fast approaches, this year we are set for a double celebration at Greenwich Theatre. Not only is it a festive time for all involved, this year we also celebrate the tenth anniversary of our in-house pantomime. Those who have been coming to the theatre for longer than that may well remember the one year that Theatre Royal Stratford East produced their pantomime here, or the years that Hiss & Boo and then the London Bubble provided the annual pantomime, but in 2006 we made the decision that pantomime was the one time of year, above all others, that we should give people the chance to see what we can do as a theatre. We commissioned a script for a new production of Aladdin from Andrew Pollard, an actor and writer who had occasionally been involved in projects here through the Natural Theatre Company, and we invited our then Associate Director Fiona Laird to direct the show. That first year was a huge learning curve for us, but the thing we learnt above everything else was that audiences loved our commitment to high quality, traditional pantomime, without a reliance on celebrity casting but with a determination to cast the best musical theatre and comedy performers around. Over the years we have worked with some amazing performers and creative teams, and for this year’s production of RED RIDING HOOD we welcome back a host of familiar names and faces to celebrate with us. Alongside Andrew Pollard as

dame, Anthony Spargo (the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood), Alim Jayda (Puss from Puss In Boots) and Martin Johnston (Mayor Boris from last year’s Jack and the Beanstalk) all join us this year to share in the celebration, as well as musical director Steve Markwick who has been with us for all of the past ten years. However, as ever, we have also been working to seek out some amazing newcomers – and this year Kirsty Marie Ayers, who many will have seen here in the new musical Sincerely Mr Toad, takes the role of Little Red, Alex Spinney from the acclaimed London musical The Clockmaker’s Daughter plays the prince, and Dawnita Smith comes straight out of the West End’s acclaimed musical Memphis to complete the cast as the woodland sprite. Last year we subsidised the ticket price for 7000 school children to see the pantomime, we retained our commitment to offering half price tickets for children across the run, and ticket sales broke all previous records. This year we expect to beat our records yet again, and tickets are selling faster than ever before, so I’m pleased to say we are now looking forward to one of the biggest birthday parties in London! Coastal Fragments

Art Hub Design Fair

The British coast has held a fascination and admiration for me since childhood. This series of photographs is an attempt to capture both the slightly quirky nature of the English seaside resort and the unspoilt beauty of our coast - a project I’ve been working on for almost 20 years.

Art Hub throws open its doors to welcome you to their annual Christmas Design Fair - 4th to the 6th December.

I still use traditional film based products, preferring darkroom-produced prints over inkjets. The craft aspect of photography is important to me and there is more ‘hands-on’ working within the darkroom than at a computer. Trevor Crone. 3rd - 15 November www.thegreenwichgallery.com. 020 8465 5968. The Greenwich Gallery, Linear House, Peyton Place, Greenwich SE10 8RS.

‘Solitary’ An exhibition of contemporary sculpture and mixed media by Patrick Colhoun.

13 – 29 November. Opening times - Thursday to Sunday, 11am - 6pm Monday - Wednesday by appointment. Ben Oakley Gallery 9 Turnpin Lane, Greenwich Market London, SE10 9JA. 07976 692 751 www.benoakleygallery.com

It’s the perfect opportunity to buy original, beautiful and affordable gifts including jewellery, prints, glassware, ceramics and textiles. All hand-crafted by independent, local designers and artists, the quality is incredibly high and you can be confident that your gift is unique. Just a stones throw away from Central Greenwich, there’s a buzz at Creekside, Deptford with Cockpit Open Studios, APT Gallery and Art Hub Gallery all open and getting you into the Christmas spirit. We recommend you start by visiting Art Hub Christmas Design Fair - it’s smaller than Cockpit, free to enter with a lucky dip for kids and fantastic Swedish mulled wine on offer. The stands in the main gallery showcase the gorgeous and affordable designs with more to explore in the Open Studios. This is the time for designers at Art Hub to shine and show off their latest work and for you to snap up the very best, original gifts. Everyone is welcome to join the Opening Night party on Friday 4 December - bar from 6pm with cocktails, live music and DJ

‘Solitary’ (London) is the final part of Patrick Colhoun’s series of three solo exhibitions that the artist is undertaking in 2015, and follows on from the first and second installments of the exhibition in Belfast and Dublin respectively, earlier this year. To date, the artist’s work has been largely about memory. Much of his early work centered on dark subjects such as death, decay, containment and aggression with a desire to make un-savoury subjects into attractive physical forms.
