the Lenox, a campaign to construct a replica 17th-century warship as part of the development, said: ‘We should not be living in the shadow of Greenwich — Deptford is more historic if anything. 400 warships have been built in the dockyard; it is steeped in history.’

London’s biggest sailing competition

One of the most impressive Crossrail stations on the network, Abbey Wood’s landmark design has been approved by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Bexley Councils. The new dual-level Crossrail station is being constructed at Abbey Wood and is one of two new Crossrail stations, the other being built at Woolwich. When it opens in 2018 Crossrail will significantly cut journey times to and from London and beyond from the Royal Borough, improving connectivity to the area and bringing new investment and jobs. 46 dinghies competed in the 2013 London Regatta held in Greenwich last month. The annual one day full-closure test of the Thames Barrier made the river a temporary non-tidal waterway with no through traffic. Three racing tracks were set out on the river between the Thames Barrier and the O2 Arena; and five classes of dinghies from seven sailing clubs took part. The event was hosted by Greenwich Yacht Club, and Race Director Hal Andrews said: ‘despite light winds, we are glad the warm weather allowed everyone to enjoy the event so much.’

Rich Heritage 16th century Deptford Dockyard is one of 67 landmarks deemed at risk by the World Monuments Fund, whose report highlights its rich heritage calling for a redevelopment of the area to be carried out ‘sensitively’. Developer Hutchison Whampoa plans to build 3,500 high-value homes as part of its £1bn Convoys Wharf scheme. But Deptford heritage campaigners are fighting for the inclusion of more historic features. know the love of a family home.’ BUAV Chief Executive, Michelle Thew, said: ‘We are delighted to have Chris’ support and urge the public to sign our petition today.’ Other celebrities backing the campaign include Ricky Gervais, Paul O’Grady and Kimberly Wyatt. www.ourbestfriends.org/petition

The Ream Experience Local company takes a leading role in Channel 4’s ‘Double Your House for Half the Money’

A RECENT EPISODE of Channel 4’s hit show Double Your House for Half the Money featured a young couple, Ben Barratt and Eloise Seale from Maidstone. Their brief was for a new kitchen, dining and living area to double the living space in their cramped 1960s detached home, one that also delivered the ‘wow’ factor. The couple chose Ream as we were able to offer the high-quality, multi-functional room they were looking for, along with a personal, relaxed experience. As Ben and Eloise were expecting their first child together, safety and maximum space was key. Web business owner Ben wanted a modern minimalistic look, whereas Eloise was after something contemporary with a warm feel. With this in mind, we decided our Kent Collection Range was the ideal choice. White gloss acrylic doors with glass-effect edging created a modern, stylish look and added extra light. This was combined with a wrap effect using textured matt wooden panels, adding the homely feel Eloise was looking for. The flowing kitchen layout included a handy peninsula with room for two stools – perfect for working from home or enjoying breakfast and informal dinners together. The luxury vinyl tiles supplied by Karndean Flooring offered a contemporary finish to the space. Designed to replicate stone, the Urbus tiles from the Opus range are both softer and warmer underfoot than natural stone flooring. Suitable for temperatures up to 27 degrees, this meant Ben and Eloise could install underfloor heating. Hardwearing and easy to look after, the on-trend large format tiles were the perfect choice. Designed to make life easier, Blum’s Servo-Drive electric opening cupboard units made the most of

the kitchen’s space and workflow. Their Antaro fullheight drawer system offers maximum storage and heightened the kitchen’s aesthetics with stylish glass sides. The Mistral solid surface worktops were the ideal choice for the project as their seamless look suited the contemporary design beautifully. Clever storage is provided by PWS with their Second Nature Collection with its Convoy Larder System giving easy access to every shelf. The stylish LeMans Corner Unit is great for keeping bulky pots and pans neat and tidy. The shelves pull out eliminating unnecessary bending and reaching, meaning that as much as possible of the space available is used. Leading manufacturers AEG supplied an innovative range of appliances, which suited the modern design beautifully. This included a pyrolytic self-cleaning oven and smart induction hob. Ben was amazed by how cooking is now easy and enjoyable with great space and amazing features, unlike their old, cramped kitchen. Blanco’s unique, stylish cooker hood completed the look. Powerful extraction technology was the perfect solution for keeping the open-plan area free of cooking odours and condensation build-up. And The Quooker stylish twin tap set provided a main tap for hot and cold and a matching boiling water tap complete with de-scale filter. The dining area enhanced the design, with a luxury table to match the wood wrapped around the white gloss kitchen doors. Under-stairs storage featured a bookcase and handy cupboard, while stylish wall-hanging shelving system for a TV and digital box completed the look. This created a relaxed living area where the couple could entertain guests and enjoy quality time together.

Commenting on the final design, Ben and Eloise (pictured above with Presenter Sarah Beeny) said: ‘Our new multi-functional area is everything we could have hoped for and more. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves and think: is this really our home? We love the design and spend most of our time in here. The final product is a unique room that offers amazing functionality and will never go out of fashion.’ REAM: 758 Sidcup Rd, New Eltham, London SE9 3NS Tel: 020 8166 8173. www.ream.co.uk. info@ream.co.uk

Top Tips to Save Energy • Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent and typically saves around £65 per year. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time. • Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat should be set at 60°C/140°F. • Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors. • Turn off the lights when you leave a room. • Don’t leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily. • If possible, fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher: one full load uses less energy than two half loads. • Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you’re using an electric kettle). • Insulate your loft space and consider cavity wall insulation too.

Business

Fair treatment for all… Be wary of the way your customers treat your employees says Mark Cornish, solicitor at Greenwich and Blackheath Solicitors Grant Saw MOST BUSINESSES HAVE SOME IDEA of how to discourage harassment and discrimination in the workplace. But what do you do when customers start harassing employees? The Equality Act 2010 used to contain an express provision making employees liable for this – provided they were aware of more than one incident, and took no action to prevent it. 'Turning a blind eye' was not an option. The government decided that this provision wasn’t necessary, and removed it on 1st October. Concerns about the negative message a change like this sends out might have merit – it doesn’t sound particularly progressive or modern to make a change that initially appears to narrow the scope of discrimination law. Employers would be wrong to think this now gives them freedom to ignore or tolerate customers who abuse or harass employees. Employers have other well established duties to provide employees with safe systems of work, and to act in good faith in dealings with employees. Government assertions that other provisions of the Equality Act already cover things adequately are probably true. The repealed section stated that the definition of harassment 'includes’ harassment from third parties. So

it is logical to assume that it can still do so (deletion of an included circumstance doesn’t extend to its exclusion). Hence, tolerating or ignoring a customer’s racist or sexist abuse could still amount to harassment in itself – if it meets the wider definition of harassment (i.e. unwanted conduct, related to a protected characteristic, which creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive working environment). It still won’t be easy for employees to prove this. Focus on the employer’s reasons for doing nothing will be critical. Can an employer’s motive really relate to someone’s race or sex, if the reason they decide to overlook someone harassing their staff is because they fear the loss of their biggest customer? Lawyers with an understanding of the complex legal tests that apply to this will probably answer 'yes' – or more likely – 'Yes. Well possibly. It depends’. But lawyers have wrestled with the nuance of this for years, which at least illustrates that the question – and discrimination generally – is seldom as straightforward as it might first seem. If you would like further information in relation to the above please call our Employment Department on 0208 858 6971 or email enquiries@grantsaw.co.uk

Gift ideas

Received with Thanks From edible undies to car vacuums - new research shows that a lot of us are getting it completely wrong when it comes to buying our loved-ones the perfect Christmas gifts. But why are we so clueless, and how can we get it right? There are two reasons men get it wrong. They either don’t allow enough time or don’t think about the person they are buying for. A present that isn’t relevant to the recipient might as well not be given. Mind you, women are not perfect present buyers either they make exactly the same mistakes as men – usually because they are so busy organising most of the Christmas festivities and food shopping.

In a recession, spending money on an appropriate and appreciated present is a sound purchase. The handbag your partner has been dreaming about for months, or a selection of foodie items for the man that loves to cook. If money is short, a voucher may be appreciated, and treats like a side of salmon or bottle of champagne may work well for friends or family.

There is a simple knack to buying great gifts – research. Think about things your partner buys for him or herself, as well as their personal style, hobbies and interests. If you pay attention, it becomes obvious. Guessing causes the problems, and choosing gifts just because you like them is a no-no. Your own taste is irrelevant. If you’re struggling, ask friends and family for hints and advice – but there’s no substitute for your own research.

Once you’re armed with information for the perfect present, the prospect of fighting with hoards of Christmas shoppers in the West End may fill you with dread so shop local. Christmas is a wrap!

Ensure that you and your dress stand out from the crowd. Just ask Valerie Breese The must-have dress. Still. Ask any woman which classic dresses are indispensable… the odds are her first response will be ‘the LBD’, or Little Black Dress. Make your LBD more current by opting for something in a lace or sequin finish. If you go for a more traditional style or already have a favourite LBD, why not glam it up with some accessories? A contrasting handbag with matching shoes can really brighten up your look. Or you could go festive with embellished heels and some fantastic costume jewellery. Asymmetric dresses are still a great style this winter and they can look feminine with a longer hemline, or younger and more contemporary when worn shorter. There are lots of options on the high street right now, so why not shop for something that reflects your personal style in terms of colour, or go for a Christmas twist by choosing a sequined or embellished design? Go for strapless and corset dresses. If you have great shoulders and toned arms show them off with a strapless or corset dress which can look gorgeous with these assets. If you are showing a lot of flesh on the upper body it can be best to avoid very short styles so choose something with a knee-length or long hemline and be the belle of the ball.

Aesthetics of London introduce their new Deep Freeze Facial, an exciting development in nonsurgical anti-ageing treatments which utilises state-of the-art equipment that has never been seen before in the UK. Combining microneedling, radio frequency and facial cryogenic therapy, the Deep Freeze Facial offers an immediate effect. Skin looks younger, radiant and glowing. After a series of sessions there is a visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, skin is noticeably tightened, especially around the eyes and jawline, rectifying the premature signs of ageing. Unlike anti-aging creams and serums which only target the surface layers of the skin, the Deep Freeze Facial penetrates the deepest layers of the skin, using state-of-the-art equipment that is exclusive to Aesthetics of London, and unique to the UK. Step One – Microneedling Skin needling has been shown to reduce collagen by up to 1000% and can increase the absorption of some products through the skin by up to 10,000 times in a single treatment. The Aesthetique Dermaroller consists of multiple micro needles, which are of a medical grade and the highest level of sterility. Step Two – Radio Frequency Collagen is applied on the face after the Microneedling session to enable maximum absorption prior to the Radio Frequency (RF) treatment. RF energy technology is ideal for those who do not wish to commit to a surgical procedure. RF is used to tighten the early signs of ageing and

sagging skin on the forehead, under eyes, cheeks, jaw line and neck. Step Three – Cryogenic Therapy Cryogenic Therapy forms the integral final step of the Deep Freeze Facial, where skin is exposed to icy cold temperatures as low as -5 degrees. This clinical freezing process is used to immediately increase the rate of cellular turnover of the skin, which creates an anti-bacterial effect on the skin which calms inflamed, irritated skin and helps to remove blackheads, sebum and follicular debris from the skin’s surface – leaving skin radiant, cleansed and refreshed. Aesthetics of London have three branches; Fenchurch Street, Stratford and The Strand. For more information visit www.aestheticsoflondon.com COMPETITION Win…a manicure in your own home. Blackheath Hospital A few miles on the clock? Advice for the body

I

n many ways, the human body is no different from a car or a washing machine. The more service it gives us over the years, the more some parts may start to wear out and the more maintenance we may need. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Ajeet Kumar answers some of your frequently asked questions: Q. My knees have been troubling me for some time. What’s the answer? A. Your GP may recommend painkillers and anti-inflammatories, help from a walking stick and/or regular moderate exercise. An elasticated support may make your knee feel stronger and an arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) may bring some relief for 6-12 months, but if arthritis is the cause, these measures will become less effective over time. Q. If I need knee surgery what is involved? A. The procedure involves removing the damaged bone and fitting an artificial knee joint made of metal, plastic or a combination of these materials. This usually involves a hospital stay of 3-5 days. Q. What can I expect from the operation? A. Though an artificial knee feels slightly different

and kneeling down is not recommended, most people make a good recovery with less pain and more mobility. A programme of exercise under the guidance of your healthcare team or GP should see you return to everyday activities quite quickly. Q. What should I do if I suffer from a sports injury? A. If your knee is swollen, painful or if you can’t move it freely, your GP may refer you to see a knee and sports injury specialist. The majority of sports injuries will not need surgery, which makes specialists an excellent initial point of contact for diagnosis. If further investigations are required or surgery is needed, you will have rapid access to scans such as X-ray, MRI, Ultrasound and CT. Your treatment options will then be discussed with you, in order to get you back to fitness with the minimum of fuss. Health

The Salt Cave Marissa Dawn Godden from Greenwich shares her story ‘I have been a client of the Salt Cave Bexleyheath since November 2012. It is one of the best alternative treatments for my severe, chronic asthma and allergic rhinitis. I had polyps removed some years ago and I have gone through years of being prescribed steroids and antibiotics as I constantly picked up chest infections. ‘I was hospitalised with an atypical pneumonia four years ago; since then my asthma became totally uncontrollable and unpredictable. My asthma treatments were changed several times with limited success. It affected my ability to do daily things. It made everything exhausting. I was tired all the time and had a constant cough, always expelling mucus or phlegm. ‘I have now been having Salt Cave sessions which have improved my condition immensely. I didn’t expect a cure or an instant result. I started off having three sessions a week. After the second session I was able to breathe a little easier through my nose. After five treatments the inflammation and tightness on my chest had eased, which previously had been painful. I used to get a lot of rhinitis headaches and sinus congestion, which were painful. After several treatments this stopped. I was headache-free and my face was less puffy. After 10 treatments the amount

of phlegm I was expelling had dramatically reduced and my chest felt more open and less wheezy and not so sore. ‘After 20 treatments, I noticed I had more energy and I could breathe deeper into my lungs which is backed up by my peak flow readings which were always between 200-250 previously and since having the Salt Therapy treatments are now steadily around 270300 which is an incredible change for the better. ‘I recently picked up a winter cold, which normally last for weeks on end and needed antibiotics. However this time it cleared very quickly - within a week without medicines - which I was delighted about and I believe it’s the result of regular Salt Therapy treatments. ‘Best of all, everyday tasks have become easier and I am able to do light exercise again.’ Salt Cave, 81/87 Avenue Road, Bexleyheath DA7 4EQ. Tel: 020 816 64100 Email: bh@saltcave.co.uk Open Day – World COPD Day Thursday 14 November – all are welcome to attend for a free salt therapy session. Or take advantage of our special offer: £300 for 30 Salt Cave sessions.

Parenting

Parenting news and views Keeping the little ones happy HELPING THEM TO EAT WELL Sometimes it feels like the only way to get vegetables into your little ones is to inject them using a syringe resembling that one that comes with your Calpol bottle. I’m not sure if it’s the colour green that they are all pathologically averse to or if there is a taste bud that only children possess that makes vegetables taste offensive, but either way, it is a challenge to achieve that 5-a-day goal we are all striving for. The following recipe is a little trick that works for me and is easy to make, brilliantly versatile and can be cooked in batches and stored in the freezer. Finely chop up a thin slice of onion, a third of a celery stick, a third of a small carrot and add to half a small crushed garlic clove and lightly sauté in a little olive oil. After 3 or 4 minutes, add some finely chopped broccoli, cover with water and boil for 5 minutes. Add a chopped mushroom, a couple of turns of the pepper mill and half a tin of chopped tomatoes and simmer for a further 4 or 5 minutes. When a knife slips through the hardest vegetable, throw in a few spinach leaves and stir. Take off the heat and leave to cool. Puree in a food processor or with a hand blender and there you have a tasty tomato sauce that accompanies mince, chicken or fish with pasta or rice. Emma Williamson. SEE PEPPA PIG AND HER FRIENDS Come and join in the fun with Peppa, George and their friends in their new show ‘Peppa Pig’s Big Splash’, which runs at the Criterion Theatre this Christmas (5 December-5 January). Trinity Laban International numbers growing at Music and Dance Conservatoire

EVERY YEAR TRINITY LABAN, the UK’s only music and dance conservatoire, welcomes overseas staff and students, making it one of the South East’s most cosmopolitan learning communities. Trinity Laban’s mission is to advance the art forms of dance and music by bringing together artists from around the world to train, collaborate, research and perform in an environment of creative and technical excellence. Renowned French pianist Pascal Rogé joins a number of other new starters across most departments, as Distinguished Artist in Residence. Pascal will teach

both undergraduate and postgraduate students in masterclasses and individual one-to-one tuition. Deniz Gelenbe, Head of the Piano Department, said she was delighted with the appointment: ‘Pascal is one of the most gifted pianists of our time, and our students will learn so much from him - his Debussy, Fauré, Ravel and Poulenc are some of the finest recordings of this repertoire in the catalogue. Other prominent international names include virtuoso double bassist Leon Bosch (pictured), violists SarahJane Bradley, Emmanuella Reiter, Jirí Žigmund and visiting professor Aleksandar Milosev, who have joined the Strings Department. From South Africa, Leon has established an international reputation as a leading champion of the double bass. Currently principal double bass with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Leon is much sought after as a chamber musician, recitalist and concerto soloist, and his infectious enthusiasm has done much to raise the profile of the double bass on the concert platform. Leon said: ‘Trinity Laban embodies a progressive outlook and the kind of creative spirit which has proved to be such an enduring, stimulating and motivating force throughout my own life. I have every confidence that it will provide me with a dynamic platform from which to pursue my commitment to educating young musicians.’ This year also sees an ever-growing list of masterclasses led by global music stars, including cellist David Cohen and Visiting Artist in Voice Matthew Rose. The Royal Greenwich International Early Music Festival also features exciting performances from internationally renowned artists such as Michaela Petri and Paolo Pandolfo. Trinity Laban is very much an international organisation – in 2013-14 37% of students have come from outside the UK, from 53 different countries. This creates a vibrant atmosphere, constantly introducing fresh ideas and a diverse range of views.

Bella Vitarigova, a 21 year old vocal student from the Czech Republic said: ‘Being an international student in Greenwich gives me the best of both worlds. I get to be in London but I am far from all the hype that is associated with living in central London – except for the weekends! At Trinity Laban we have beautiful views of the Cutty Sark and the Thames that are so inspiring to practice to!’ Trinity Laban’s vision for the 21st century artist is one who is entrepreneurial; able to inhabit many roles within their careers, be highly adaptable to new opportunities and capable of working with a wide range of artists across other art forms. Its music and dance students interact socially, in performance and formally through the curriculum, as well as with leaders in other art forms to explore new outlooks and possibilities in generating original work. Despite visa changes, international students have not been deterred from coming to Trinity Laban, attracted by the world class facilities and renowned teaching staff. The benefit of international students lies not just in their tuition fees and contribution to the UK economy, but they also have a much wider social, cultural and educational benefit, all adding to the internationalisation of Trinity Laban A report released in September – ‘Richer for It’, says that overseas students help foster an ‘international outlook’ among their British counterparts, an attitude prized by the majority of employers – and home students’ learning experience is ‘enriched’ by the presence of international course mates. The communities of Greenwich and Blackheath have a long history of welcoming visitors from around the world, and Trinity Laban students return the compliment by enriching the music and dance offering that local residents can enjoy throughout the year. Autumn Food News Aqua arrives in Blackheath

AQUA MEDITERRANEAN BAR & GRILL is now open in Blackheath. The arrival of this highly popular restaurant, which already has successful outlets in Bromley, Banstead and Croydon, promises to re-invigorate the village’s culinary reputation as one of London’s best and trendiest eating-out venues. Opening on the site of the former Bella Vista in Montpelier Vale, Aqua will showcase Chef Patron Dasos Charalambos’s culinary flare and his Mediterranean heritage. His dishes encompass the flavours and textures of the region in a

heady and delicious fusion of Greek, Italian and French cuisine. Aqua’s outstanding reputation for food and service continues to grow with each new opening. Now Blackheath joins the list to offer a genuinely fresh taste of the Med, a lively atmosphere and simply superb food and affordable prices. Aqua insists on only the best produce from its suppliers. Everything is made from scratch and cooked on the premises, unlike many high street chains where the trend is towards pre-cooked food, shipped to the outlet where it is re-heated and served. ‘It’s a good way to increase profits, but I believe it short-changes the customer. When we offer freshly prepared and freshly cooked food it’s exactly that – and the furthest a dish travels is from the kitchen to the table’, says Dasos. Aqua’s competitively priced menus include a set lunch menu Monday to Friday with two courses for £12 and three courses for £15. The set dinner menu is £15 for two courses and £18 for three courses. One of the highlights of Aqua’s menu is its 50% off

The Perfect Party Starts by getting the venue right

WE ALL WANT A PARTY FULL OF FESTIVE CHEER at this time of year, but arranging the office party or just a night out with a small group of friends or family can be a real headache. Perhaps you have offered to organise this year’s party and you are looking for some fantastic ideas, or perhaps it’s been delegated to you and you are dreading the thought of it – either way it’s your turn to arrange the office party. And it’s a big responsibility – after all you need to achieve that balance of thanking everyone for their hard work and commitment to the organisation over the past few months and motivating them for the future. The annual office Christmas party is essential for good team building, staff motivation, rewarding employees and saying ‘thank you’ for their hard work over the previous months. To put it bluntly, the Christmas party is as much a Great British tradition as presents and the Queen’s speech! So... what kind of event did you have in mind?

Is the plan to have a few drinks, something to eat and then a bit of dancing? or are you and your colleagues looking for something unique and different. Prepare a brief before you consider doing anything else – it will save you time, effort, anguish and money in the long run. Think about how many people will be attending and identify which venues are most suitable. Canvass a small number of your work colleagues and share your thoughts before booking, but remember, you won’t be able to meet everyone’s wishes so do be realistic. A relatively new idea is a ‘joiner event’, which is a party shared by more than one company or party organising individual. Doing so saves on venue hire, entertainment, staff and catering costs. Joining a shared party can attract all the atmosphere of a large celebration, regardless of your group size. Some shared Christmas events are designed for smaller groups of colleagues or friends (minimum 10 people) looking for a festive night out with a great large party atmosphere. Avoid the last Friday before Christmas as availability is much more restricted and prices can be higher, perhaps consider a lunch at this late stage…

magical venue with an air of traditional Dickensian Christmas with magnificent dining rooms and buildings originally designed by Christopher Wren. Choose from their flexible packages in the Painted Hall, the vaulted Undercroft rooms or the Admiral’s House. For smaller groups consider the Old Brewery within the grounds of Greenwich University, in central Greenwich. There’s the newly re opened Greenwich Inc Bar and plenty more! You’re sure to find what you want!

Restaurant reviews A feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds PANAS GURKHAS KITCHEN is the sister restaurant of Panas Gurkha in Lee High Road and The Bombay Dine Club in Clapham. Sitting directly opposite Grove Park Station between some rather stark shops and a nail salon, you’d be forgiven for giving it a cursory glance and heading home to a dull meal deal from your local supermarket. That would be a mistake. Anyone who’s been to Panas Gurkha in Lee knows that their Indian and Nepalese cooking is delicious and reasonably priced and that the staff are friendly and efficient. The Lee Panas is also a popular take out choice and the first Indian restaurant where I’ve opened the curry on the following day (when it tastes even better) and not discovered that rather off-putting layer of bright orange glop that resembles Silvio Berlusconi’s moisturiser sitting atop my Lamb Rogan. Panas Gurkhas Kitchen in Grove Park clearly also does very well from its takeaway business, its white mini bustled back and forth outside the restaurant so often I was starting to think it was part of a fleet of vehicles. The restaurant interior is simply decorated but has a welcoming, cosy feel, opting for substance over style unlike some West End restaurants where you pay for a stunning interior and poor quality food. Panas Gurkhas

Kitchen is a welcome antidote to that trend; their dishes are authentic and delicious with a wide range of choice in the menu. Starting with the Papri Chat, pictured, described as ‘crisp fried dough wafers with chick peas, potatoes, onions and yoghurt and tamarind chutney’, it arrived beautifully presented and the wafers were delicate and decorated in spiced ribbons of chutney. It had a satisfying crunch to it, which worked well with the tangy yoghurt. The Sadeko Kukhura (chef’s signature starter) was equally good and deceptively simple. Barbecued chicken came beautifully placed on shredded red onion with mustard oil and nicely bitter fenugreek seeds that brought out the juiciness of the perfectly cooked chicken. Any carnivore in the family would love this dish. For the mains, the Lamb Shank Special and Vegetable Chattinad did not disappoint either. The lamb was succulent and fell from the bone into a rich, thick garlic and chilli sauce. The Chattinad was good but lacked the aniseed hit that I thought it would contain from its description. A wider variety of rices can be found in the restaurant than on the takeaway menu so I opted for lemon rice which was sharp and fragrant and worked well with both mains. Inevitably the thought of a third course

SIZZLE GRILL AT FIVE WAYS on the Sidcup Road sounds appealing on chilly evening. Looking at the menu, I wondered why the Mixed Grill has gone out of fashion. I remember the days when a plate of mixed grilled meats would satisfy the most hardy of carnivores. I could have had a Kofte starter and a chicken shish main course; instead I asked what the chef could offer as a Mixed Grill. The result was half a lamb shish kebab, half a chicken shish, two kofte patties, one lamb cutlet (and a grilled chicken leg that my partner couldn’t manage!) with salad. I could have had chips or rice but decided against it. Reflecting, I would swap the salad for a big grilled flat

mushroom and a good quality grilled tomato, Please put it on the menu; it was great and reasonably priced. This way I got to test drive most of what the Sizzle was all about, simple, good quality char-grilled food. Char-grilled Scallops wrapped in bacon with a wine sauce, was my partner’s starter, the smokey bacon adding a different dimension. We both like scallops, but she didn’t offer me one. She ate them with glee while I watched and waited for my mixed grill, which arrived with her main. Char-grilled chicken piri-piri with its spicy but not over-powering marinade had warm glow and the addition of chips made a satisfying meal. Baklava with Pistachio ice cream, recommended by our waitress (who may well be the lady of the house) touched on our collective weak spot, but I had mine with real Italian Cassata. Far more subtle than tutti frutti, Cassata is for me the high point of gelati. Chocolate with custard coloured vanilla and flecks of candied cherry and the aptly named angelica, my heaven on a plate. With excellent coffees, great value at £78. 747 Sidcup Road, New Eltham, London SE9 3SA www.thesizzlegrill.com By Michael Breese

Meridian Interviews We met Inc Bar’s Manager Jean Pierre (JP), who got us very excited about Inc Bar’s new cocktail menu You were heavily involved in creating the bar’s new cocktail menu, tell us more We had already introduced cocktails at the bar earlier in the year, gently though; with classics and betterknown recipes to gauge reactions – and they were a huge hit. So with Christmas coming we’ve been hard at work to create something bigger and better. The new menu has more than 50 cocktails to choose form, including a range of mojitos, cosmopolitans, martinis, old favourites from the previous menu and a whole new range carefully created by the Inc Bar team. We wanted to encourage our customers to be brave and try Cosmopolitan something different.

So rather than settling for a straight forward G&T – try a gin-based cocktail with a twist. There’s an art and a science to making a good cocktail. How serious did the experiment stage get? Very! One idea would lead on to so many more, and you soon realise that, with cocktails, the list of recipes can be almost infinite. We tested out a lot of cocktails, some absolutely fantastic; and some (needless to say) didn’t make the final 50. We played with unusual ingredients too, so there a few cocktails that come with a Tabasco hit, for instance. What sets an Inc Bar cocktail apart? We may have a huge range that caters for all tastes, but we are always happy chat to you find out what you like and to create something more bespoke – a cocktail consultation if you like. We also take great care in preparing each drink we want you to taste each component and how they blend together and, most of all, we want you to really enjoy it. What do you think makes a good cocktail? Firstly, presentation: I want it to look good, and for it to stir up some drink envy. Then preparation: I want to see the person mixing my cocktail preparing it with passion and concentration. And of course to taste as great as it looks – and this is the mantra we’ve adopted for this new menu.

Strawberry Mojito

What are your Top 3 from the new menu? Inc Orgasm: Limoncello, Vodka, and Passion fruit. Fresh, fruity and a firm favourite. Junebug: a blend of Rum, Pineapple and Lemon, for those with a sweet tooth Spicy Mojito: made with spiced rum, fresh mint, lime and finished with a splash of Tabasco. And especially for Christmas we have Christmas Cookie: a warming cocktail which ignites your Christmas spirit and shuts out the cold with: Kahlua, Baileys and mint liqueur. Before I go, JP insists on shaking me up his infamous Inc Orgasm. Not only does it look and taste fantastic – it sends me out into the evening with a glow. Inc Bar’s new menu is an experience, and one which they very much hope you’ll come aboard and enjoy too. New menu available from November. Half price cocktails every Friday 5pm – 8pm and Saturday 12pm – 8pm. Inc Bar, 7a College Approach, Greenwich SE10 9HY www.incbar.com

On stage James Haddrell of Greenwich Theatre considers the history and significance of the pantomime – a peculiarly British institution Who actually knows the story of Puss In Boots? When trying to choose a pantomime title, theatres across the country home in on a small number of big stories – Cinderella, Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Dick Whittington (more common in London than elsewhere, for obvious reasons), and then maybe Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, or occasionally Mother Goose. Theatres talk about having their cycle – as a pantomime producer you stage your five big titles in a row and then you just go round again. There is a perception that audiences like to see a story they know, that they like to know what’s coming – to look forward to the moment at the end of Act One when Cinderella’s pumpkin turns into a carriage, or a beanstalk grows up out of the well, or Aladdin takes flight on his magic carpet. If you choose a story that people don’t know well, then audiences can’t have that sense of anticipation. At least that’s the common view of many producers. Having been acclaimed in the press as presenting ‘one of the best pantomimes in the country’, you might think that we would play safe at Greenwich Theatre, confident of our market and our place in the cycle, but last year we broke that cycle and staged a pantomime version of Robin Hood. Audience numbers were record-breaking, so this year we’ve opted for another new title – Puss In Boots. In truth there is nothing new about using these titles for pantomime. Robin Hood had been the subject of pantomime since the 1790s while Puss In Boots, based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale ‘Le Chat Botte’ and taken in turn from an Italian folk tale, was first staged as a pantomime in Covent Garden in 1817 starring one of the most famous entertainers of the day, Joseph Grimaldi. In recent times, however, the story seems to have fallen out of favour with pantomime writers and producers. Our choice seems to be working though. With sales for Puss In Boots already exceeding those of the record-breaking Robin Hood, it seems that audiences are quite happy to move away from the big stories regularly told in panto. Maybe people do know the story of the talking cat, the fake Marquis, the princess and the magical battle between Puss and the villain, maybe the appearance of Puss in Shrek and the Dreamworks spin-off movies have brought the character back to life for us, or maybe audiences just know that at Greenwich, whatever the title, we put everything we can into making the most magical, musical, spectacular Christmas show possible.
