50th Anniversary 21

Class of 2019 22 - 23

From our President

In many ways, the Kennedy Catholic High School our alumni remember remains very much the same while simultaneously representing a vibrant future. We continue to take great pride in our rich history as we close in on our 50th anniversary. We honor our traditions as we move forward and plan for the future.

Michael Prato

Each of us has been called to Kennedy Catholic for this particular reason—to labor as God calls us to labor, for as long as His will dictates. Parents incoming and departing; students arriving and graduating; teachers, new to their vocation and those entering a different season. We have each accomplished in Christ, an indelible mark of eternal significance that has and will change us forever. This year I look forward to welcoming our new principal, Nancy Brandish, to Kennedy Catholic. Read more about her inside the magazine. It is with a great deal of gratitude and a sense of sincere appreciation that I look forward to passing the baton to her. The cornerstone is in place and all other building blocks will fill in around it. I also welcome a new Advancement Director, Sarah Dahleen. As our Admission Director, Sarah helped identify the families that we seek, families who uniquely define a Lancer: passionate, academic, faith-filled and exceptional. Sarah will continue to build on the relationships she developed in admissions to promote all aspects of Kennedy Catholic through our development efforts. We once again say good-bye to members of our faculty and staff through retirements and we welcome new members to our team. We are engaged in creating opportunities for all of our students and graduating seniors ready to take on the world. Finally, the planning is underway to celebrate the final coaching season for Coach Bob Bourgette. Bob can be best described as having the heart of a giant. He has given countless hours of time instilling young athletes with the skills they need to succeed in all areas of life. See more details inside about upcoming events to celebrate Bob’s legacy at Kennedy Catholic. As we approach the new school year and another chapter at Kennedy Catholic, may God continue to physically and spiritually bless each of you and keep you safe, for your work in Christ is not over!

Gratefully,

Michael Prato

President

We are thrilled to introduce and welcome our new principal, Ms. Nancy Bradish, to Kennedy Catholic High School. As a result of work on 2020 Vision, our strategic plan, Kennedy Catholic identified the need to move to the President/Principal model of school leadership. Over the last two years, Kennedy Catholic has undertaken a national search for our new school principal to address this strategic initiative. We are thankful for the leadership of Ms. Christine Smith in guiding our search committee through this two-year long process. Nancy impressed the numerous administrators, parents and teachers who interviewed her during our rigorous hiring process. She is an energetic educational leader with a proven connection to students and parents, and a track record for being a positive team player with teachers and staff. Nancy is also a strong leader who is committed to providing the necessary tools to meet the needs of each and every student at Kennedy Catholic. She embraced the mission of Kennedy Catholic to “Graduate Leaders Following Christ in a school community that is accessible, diverse and committed to pursuing the fullest potential of every student.” Nancy has worked in elementary and secondary education for over 15 years and most recently served as director for human resources in the Aurora School District in Illinois. She has served as principal, vice principal and teacher in schools in Illinois since 2005. Prior to moving to the Midwest, she worked as a department chair and teacher at Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle. She holds a BA in education from Pacific Lutheran University and a Master’s of Education Administration from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.

“Kennedy Catholic High School is dedicated to graduating leaders, following Christ. We accomplish this goal by living the mission of the Archdiocese of Seattle; pursuing our Catholic Identity and making a Catholic education accessible to all students. We do this while maintaining the highest of expectations from both staff and students. Our search for the Kennedy Catholic High School principal is complete and our future is exciting. Nancy will help us to continue to set the standard that defines education at Kennedy Catholic: pursuing the fullest potential of every student while embracing the will of God.” Michael Prato We hope you will all have the opportunity to meet Nancy in the coming months and when you do, please join us in offering her a warm welcome to the Kennedy Catholic family! 4

Principal Nancy Bradish: An Interview

What made you want to work at Kennedy Catholic High School?

The principalship at Kennedy Catholic High School allows me to return to my Catholic education roots. The school has a strong foundation in faith-filled education for all students. The school serves a diverse community with a diverse offering of student organizations and activities. The curriculum meets the needs of all students. When visiting the school, many teachers stated the fact that they are educating future saints. What an opportunity to be a part of that mission! I feel education is a vocation and I believe I have been called to service for a diverse community where I can share my faith and dedication to the education of all learners. Kennedy Catholic High School allows me to answer that call.

What are the things that caught your attention when looking at Kennedy Catholic?

It is my first and foremost belief that all students can and will learn. They can achieve at the highest level. It is the responsibility of the school to ensure that all students have access to the best, most appropriate instruction, the highest-quality classroom teacher, and the safest, most accepting community environment in which to achieve their potential. Kennedy Catholic’s mission statement and philosophy echo that same ideal. When reviewing the Kennedy Catholic School Improvement Plan, there has been a very solid foundation established and exciting improvement plans set. I look forward to the opportunity to continue moving the school in its upward trajectory and continue its growth, expand upon its current programs and work with the staff and community to develop new programs.

When you visit a classroom, what do you look for as signs that it is an effective place to learn?

I look for active student engagement - Socratic discussions centered on higher order thinking and questioning. I see student centered, discovery based learning. I see mutual respect being demonstrated by all and I hear the language of acceptance and high expectations.

Please describe one of your biggest achievements in your previous role:

In my previous role, I had the responsibility to oversee the new educator mentor program. I was able to grow the number of trained mentors and increase offerings of targeted professional development opportunities. One of the greatest assets of a school is its teaching staff. If you hire quality teachers, and provide the right support and professional learning opportunities, classroom instruction and management rise to high standards. As a building principal, I worked to improve the home-school connection. I worked with my Parent Teacher Organization supporting their involvement in our school. I opened the doors for monthly family nights, led by the faculty and staff, and we even began a tradition of a year-end celebration for the families. I held monthly parent/principal coffee talks that were focused on academics, curriculum and social emotional topics. Monthly letters in both English and Spanish helped keep our parents informed and encouraged their participation in events. Our community was strengthened and the parents felt welcomed and embraced by their school.

What role do you hope to see parents play at Kennedy Catholic?

Education involves the whole community. A Catholic education especially involves the community. Parents are key players in the education of their students. There must be a strong relationship between the families and the school. This is possibly the foundation of every other component of a school. Kennedy Catholic has already developed parent organizations that support the academic and extracurricular activities of the students. I would like to see parent involvement in these organizations continue to grow and develop.

What role do you hope to see alumni play at Kennedy Catholic?

Alumni are important members of the school’s foundation. They can speak to the excellent education they received and the memories they have. They can talk about the opportunities that their experiences at Kennedy Catholic opened up for them. Kennedy Catholic has already developed alumni networks that support the growth of the school. I would like to see involvement in these networks continue to grow and develop.

A Lancer Legend’s Final Season

Though his final season at Kennedy Catholic has not yet started, legendary football coach Bob Bourgette is already gearing up for the excitement. With 17 league championships and an impressive 189-39 record, Coach B has inspired decades of Lancers to achieve greatness on and off the field. He sees talent in his athletes and he pushes them to reach their full potential. It’s only fitting that in his final season, Coach B and the team will have access to the beautiful new William F. Eisiminger Field. Bob has been instrumental in turning the dream of a home field into a reality. From planning and design, to fundraising and construction, Bob’s leadership and passion have proven invaluable.

Coach B’s list of accomplishments and accolades is long. Highlights include: Kennedy Catholic Athletic Director 1992-2015 175 League Championships 77 Individual State Champions 11 State Champions WA State Football Chairman Coach of Decade: KING 5 Sports WA State Coach of the Year 2006 Seahawks Coach of the Year 2006 WA State Coaches Hall of Fame Pacific NW Football Hall of Fame National Football Foundation Coach of the Year 2006 Central WA University Hall of Fame 1970 Head Softball Coach ten years (seven State appearances) Head Wrestling Coach four years (nine State placers) 6

Planning is underway for several activities and events to bid this Lancer Legend farewell. Mark your calendars and watch for details. Contact Amy Hall at halla@kennedyhs.org for more information.

William F. Eisiminger Athletic Field Update The home field that was a vision for nearly 50 years is finally a reality thanks to the generosity and determination of many. Watching soccer, lacrosse, track & field and fitness compete and practice at home this past spring was a testament to decades of dreaming and planning. A turfed multi-use field, track & field surfaces, fencing, drainage, landscaping, and mechanical requirements were completed during Phase One last fall. Planning, permitting and fundraising are underway for the future phases to include: a field house (with concessions, a weight room, ticketing, meeting space and restrooms), field lights, additional landscaping, tennis courts, permanent bleacher seating, a digital scoreboard and much more. In addition to the outdoor athletic enhancements, the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms are undergoing a complete redesign and renovation currently scheduled for the summer of 2016. It is truly an exciting time to be a Lancer! 7

Athletic Program Strategic Plan The last few years have focused heavily on growth, development and planning at Kennedy Catholic. A school wide strategic plan was introduced in 2013 and similar plans for academics, development, the International program, and admissions followed. These documents have proven instrumental in setting annual goals and creating targeted, measurable work plans to ensure continued success and progress as we approach our 50th year and well beyond. The signature athletic program at Kennedy Catholic was the focus of the most recent strategic planning initiative. This process began with the announcement that Bob Bourgette would retire as Athletic Director at the end of the recent school year. He then assisted in the development of this plan to ensure the new athletic leadership could build on his many successes over the last four decades. A visioning survey was sent to the Lancer community which received significant response from every Kennedy Catholic constituency. In-person focus groups and a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) followed, and five key areas were identified as the targets for the next generation of Lancer athletics. These are outlined below: Leadership The role of a high school athletic director has changed significantly in the last decade. A focus on administration and management

is critical for future success and development of our young athletes. Most athletic directors today are earning degrees and certificates in program management and athletic leadership. Coach Bourgette has built an incredible program that will be carried forward by a professional administrator with years of management experience.

Coaching Standards and Accountability Coaching standards and personnel policies will be further developed and implemented to model other high school programs and ensure consistency amongst all sports offered at Kennedy Catholic. Whenever possible, in-building coaching will be encouraged.

Facilities The athletic campus development will continue. Upcoming projects include: an extensive remodel of both locker rooms, the addition

of permanent bleachers, bathrooms, concessions, lights and more surrounding the new William F. Eisiminger Athletic Field, the addition of tennis courts, and future renovations to the Goodwin gymnasium.

Communications & Outreach Internal and external communications will be enhanced between coaches, administrators, students,

parents, alumni and the Booster Club. Coaches will develop team blogs and athlete success will be highlighted on the school web site and social media outlets. A focus on media relations will continue.

Athletic Advancement Additional relationships with college and university programs will develop to ensure our skilled Lancer athletes are recognized upon graduation. Alumni athletes and Kennedy Catholic friends will be invited to support the athletic program enhancements with their gifts of time and resources.

It is an exciting time to be a Lancer! Thank you to the hundreds of alumni, parents and friends who assisted in this process to define the future of our award-winning athletic program. 8

Annette Duvall Our New Athletic Director Ms. Annette J. Duvall has been named the new Athletic Director at Kennedy Catholic. She holds a Master of Science degree in Sport Pedagogy from Seattle Pacific University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Western Washington University and has over 19 years of professional experience with high school athletics. Ms. Duvall served as Athletic Director at Redmond and Bainbridge High Schools. She received Metro Athletic Director of the Year honors in 2010 and 2012 and the District Athletic Director of the Year award in 2012. In addition to 20 years of coaching experience, as an athlete Annette was inducted into WWU’s Hall of Fame, was selected as the WWU Female Soccer Player of the Century, and still holds five goal-scoring records. She brings energy, enthusiasm and knowledge to share in the field of athletics. Welcome Ms. Duvall!

Last year, in honor of Lancer Legend Joe Faccone’s four+ decades of service to Kennedy Catholic, the baseball field was renamed Faccone Field. This spring the renovated scoreboard was unveiled. Congratulations Coach Faccone! 9

Joy—it’s the first thing you hear in a person’s voice when they talk about Mr. Jim Paynton, who spent the past 36 years as the Instrumental Music Director at Kennedy Catholic High School. The joy of a student learning the gift of music, the joy of a staff member working side-by-side on concerts or theater productions and the joy and privilege to sit in the audience at a Kennedy Catholic concert with toes tapping to the beat. Kennedy Catholic is home to a vibrant instrumental music program that includes more than 140 students in concert, marching and symphonic bands, jazz ensembles and orchestra. Mr. Paynton led the largest band program in our region to an impressive list of award winning performances: • The Marching Band won the first place award at Apple Blossom seven years in a row and won the Sweepstakes award in 2015 • The Concert Band received a “Certificate of Excellence” at 2015 Soundview Regional Assessments • The Symphonic Band received Superior ratings at 2015 Soundview Regional Assessments What will he miss most about teaching? “Relationships. I will miss the relationships with my students and their parents. We work on team-building and self-confidence, our relationships with each other and with our creator—God to us—us to God.” During his tenure at Kennedy Catholic, his most gratifying accomplishment is the founding and creation of the Chamber Orchestra, which since its inception has steadily grown into a core element of the program. The legacy of Mr. Payton is witnessed through the commitment of his students, who he describes as unsung heroes for their dedication to sharing their talents at Kennedy Catholic. These students perform at every home football and basketball game, at masses during the school year and travel to other Catholic schools to share their love of music. It is truly inspiring. In recognition of his years of tireless dedication to helping young people develop their talents and grow their faith through the power of music, the Kennedy Catholic music room has been named “The Paynton Music Center.” A fitting tribute to an educator whose legacy will continue for many years to come.

Mr. Paynton’s Retirement

Our New Instrumental Music Director Before joining Kennedy Catholic, Mr. Fischer held a Graduate Teaching Assistant position with the Auburn University Bands. Prior to the University, he served as the Band and Orchestra Director at Arcadia High School and Band Director at Ingleside Middle School from 2010–2013 in Scottsdale, AZ. Under his direction, the music programs at both schools performed actively in the community and earned numerous district and statewide honors. Mr. Fischer received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Ottawa University graduating Magna Cum Laude. He completed his Master’s of Music Education from Auburn University this past spring. During his matriculation, he served as the associate director of the Auburn Tiger Marching Band. Please help us welcome Daniel, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Elise Marie, to the Lancer family!

This year we celebrated the retirement of an additional four members of our staff. Although we wish these retirees the very best as they depart Kennedy Catholic High School and move on to a new chapter in life, their departure will leave voids that will be difficult to fill. Each of these retirees brought a unique and special passion to their jobs. Whether stirring religious reflection, inspiring musicians, maintaining our facilities, motivating actors, or encouraging exploration of economics and finance, each of these exceptional people have prompted current and future Lancers to achieve their greatest potential. Combined they have an amazing 151 years of experience! We thank you for influencing the Lancer legacy. It is with gratitude that we applaud your many years of devoted work. 11

From our Chaplain

Father Bryan dolejsi I am happy to serve as the Chaplain at Kennedy Catholic High School and Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Seattle. The idea of vocation is central to the belief that God has created each person with gifts and talents oriented toward specific purposes and a way of life. A divine call to service in the Church and humanity through consecration as a religious or ordination to priestly ministry is a life-changing decision. It’s been a delight to have a bridge between my roles through our seminarians who are proud alumni of Kennedy Catholic. Three of our graduates are currently studying to become priests in service to the Archdiocese of Seattle. Jeffrey Moore (‘06) in third theology and Louis Cunningham (‘10) in second theology will both be studying at Mundelein Seminary in Illinois next year. Michael Barbarossa (‘14) will be a junior at Gonzaga and resides at Bishop White Seminary in Spokane. All three alumni continue to show the exceptional qualities of learning, faith and leadership in their seminary career. Their foundation was grounded at Kennedy Catholic, helping them pursue a commitment to life-long learning and growth in holiness. The spiritual formation of our students begins in the classroom where all are encouraged to share their core values, gifts and talents and the confidence to achieve their God-given potential. We are a family that is continually formed and transformed through God’s love. This transformation becomes the basis for all decisions we make and leads us to serve others. Kennedy Catholic has more seminarians than any other Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Seattle and I expect more in the future. I look forward to my continued service and support of the faculty, staff, students and alumni community at Kennedy Catholic. Yours in Christ,

12

Father Bryan Dolesjsi

“Kennedy Catholic provided me with an environment to grow in faith and relationships with others. In my four years, I was blessed with opportunities to mature as a person, with countless mentors offering me guidance. The education emphasizes critical-thinking skills and a challenge to encourage oneself to learn for the sake of knowledge.”

“As an international student, I faced so many challenges when I first came here. I couldn’t speak fluent English and I didn’t know anyone. Kennedy Catholic encouraged me to face the challenge and to live my life with confidence. I had countless opportunities to express myself and to find the place I belong.”

13

Congratulations Class of 2015! On June 5, 2015 we celebrated the Baccalaureate Mass with the Most Reverend Archbishop J. Peter Sartain presiding. Ben Josie was selected by his peers to speak about their experiences together as a class. Below is an excerpt from his speech.

“Every day I learn something new about you incredible people, and nothing is more fulfilling. In my four years at Kennedy, the most important concept I’ve learned from this interaction is simple, but difficult. I’ve said it all year, so it only seems fitting to share it now, as our high school career heads to a close. And it can be summed up in two words: Choose Love. Right now I’d like to focus on the “Why,” aspect of Choose Love. Today’s gospel reading talked about the idea that Jesus considers us His friends. After all the sins we commit over and over, we are forgiven and given life. We are given the beautiful, amazing gift of life! And life really is amazing when you think about it, right? A basic life on Earth comes with so many simple joys, and that alone is the greatest evidence of God’s love for us. We are given love in each other, in our friendships and support within our class. In every long-distance carpool, late night project and that dance we did last week. We are all in this together, not just now but for these last four years together. In our time together we danced, we cried, we laughed, and had a really, really, really good time…and we did it together.”

14

Baccalaureate mass on Friday, June 5, signaled the beginning of graduation day activities. During the mass processional, Kennedy Catholic graduates carried with them a single item representing their four-year high school experience. We were honored to have the Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain as presider for the mass. Fr. Bryan Dolejsi, Fr. John Madigan, Fr. Mike Batterberry, and Fr. Michael Radermacher con-celebrated the service. Here is an excerpt from the Most Reverend Archbishop J. Peter Sartain’s baccalaureate mass sermon: “Great people know what it means to be humble and how to take the high road. In fact, the two are the same thing. To be humble is to recognize that what we have and what we are is a gift from God. Everything is a gift, a gift for which we should humbly give thanks to God. Having recognized that, we treat others with the greatest of respect because they, too, are a gift from God, made in His image and likeness... Learning to be humble and taking the high road, then, mean putting others first. It means that we will be the first to extend our hand in friendship, the last to ridicule or judge. It means that we will be the first to say “I’m sorry” and the first to say “I forgive you.” It means that we will always say a word that encourages and never say a word in sarcasm. It means that we will never seek revenge but will always seek to understand and build up others... You will celebrate many successes in life, just as you are celebrating one today. Humility and the high road should be the hallmark of every success. Class of 2015, whenever you meet any success in life, give thanks to God, because He is the author of every success. His is always the High Road.”

Following this special mass, senior students and their families attended the Senior Awards breakfast. During the breakfast the Kennedy Awards of Excellence were presented to the outstanding student in each discipline. The students were presented a plaque and medal to be worn at graduation. The student has his or her name engraved on the perpetual plaque which is displayed outside the main office of the school. In additional to the awards, students heard from the senior class officers who recalled memories from the year. Later that evening, our senior class joined the ranks of our alumni as they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Kennedy Catholic students excel in academics, and are talented artists, athletes, musicians, humanitarians, and servant leaders. Their futures are bright. These graduates define “extraordinary” in a new way.

A prayer for our Class of 2015 graduates God of our beginnings, We thank you for the gifts of these graduates; their excitement, their awesome wonder and curiosity, their open speech and encouraging words. Their contributions have blessed and challenged us, and we have become a richer and more diverse community because of them.

As they step forward into the world that awaits, comfort their fears with the full knowledge of your divine presence. May your Spirit give them many skills and talents and help them to use these gifts for your glory and for the good of all people. We ask this blessing upon each of them, In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

You can only graduate from Kennedy Catholic once, but you are a Lancer…for life. 15

Nearly 50 years ago, Kennedy Catholic High School was brought into being by great desires and sustained through sacrifice. It is a valued and notable institution, built by an exceptional faculty, staff and community and it is continuously nourished by the prayers of many. Kennedy Catholic has shaped our community by graduating Leaders Following Christ in a school community that is accessible, diverse and committed to pursuing the fullest potential of every student. For years Lancers have been nurtured by words of encouragement and challenge. They have experienced pep rallies and assemblies, music and theater, retreats and liturgies, community service and immersion travel, art, history, math, science, English, foreign language and more. In so doing, this school has become what we know it to be today. This is a unique time to share our historic milestones, myriad achievements and many innovative firsts since our founding. As we approach this milestone and begin to plan our 50th anniversary celebration, we hope you will join us to honor our past, experience our today and see the value in investing in Kennedy Catholic’s next 50 years. Watch for details about our upcoming 50th anniversary events.

Prayer for the Class of 2019

Lord, we pray for the protection of the Class of 2019. We ask that you would guard their heart and their mind in Christ Jesus, That you would wrap them up in Your love And deliver them from all evil. Lord, we pray that you would give the Class of 2019 great enthusiasm for their studies. May you inspire them each and every day. May each semester and year bring fresh inspiration to their work. May each moment be filled with the energy they need for their tasks. Lord, we pray that the Class of 2019 would know the hope to which they are called. That their life would be transformed by revelation from Heaven, That You would inspire their direction, And gently lead them into their destiny.

Lord, May they come to know Your goodness and love, To walk in Your freedom and grace all the days at Kennedy Catholic.

to the Class of 2019!

We are all set to welcome the arrival of our newest, first-year Lancers and their families as they begin an incredible journey at Kennedy Catholic this fall. They have chosen to be part of the heart and soul of a very special community, and we are honored to have them join the Lancer family. The Class of 2019 bring a unique combination of backgrounds, perspectives and talents to share and strengthen our already vibrant community. Stepping through the doors at Kennedy Catholic each new student will be inspired to care for the well-being of others through the spirit of service, participation in retreats and the power of reflection. Students will become strong leaders, create lifelong friends and become advocates of a greater good. The knowledge these new students will gain from our exceptional academic programs will provide lasting value that they will carry with them to many elite colleges and universities nationally and internationally. Alumni play an important role helping to shape and mentor the lives of Lancer students. We are grateful for the encouragement of our alumni, whose firsthand knowledge of the history, traditions and spirit of our school commands a unique voice. Thank you for speaking to potential students and families about the value of a Kennedy Catholic education—your support is invaluable.
