MAYOR’S MESSAGE Dear Residents, This has been an incredibly challenging year for all of us. We’ve had residents who’ve lost their jobs. Many of our businesses closed during the shutdown, and some may not reopen. We’ve had family and friends who’ve suffered from the coronavirus and others who’ve sheltered in place to help flatten the curve. In addition, we’ve had to witness an unfortunate and needless police brutality incident in Minneapolis, which sparked riots and protests across this great nation. The City of Merriam morns the loss of George Floyd and others who represent tragedies that violate the high ideals of our country and our community. Despite all this, our community continues to move forward. As we start to gain a sense of our new normal, we remain committed to fostering diversity, and we pledge to continue to professionally serve the people who live and visit our great city.
Look us up on Nextdoor, the neighborhoodfocused social network.
Your Mayor,
#MERRIAMKS

Work continues on the Merriam Comprehensive Plan 2040, which is the creation of a new land-use plan to guide the City’s growth for the next two decades.
Confluence is assisting the City with the plan and, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, is conducting online meetings with residents and committee members. Confluence created an interactive website where you can provide your ideas, thoughts, and comments about Merriam’s future. Visit merriam2040.org through Aug. 16 to participate in the planning process. The Comprehensive Plan 2040 is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.

Q+A with Merriam Staff
.............................................................................................................................................................. Employee Name:
Title: Department:
Ingrid Berg Recreation Coordinator Parks & Recreation ...................................................................................................................................... If you’ve attended one of our awesome Party in YOUR Park events, chances are you’ve met Ingrid Berg. Ingrid has worked for the Merriam Parks and Recreation Department for six years. Ingrid and her family love being active in the outdoors and exploring state and national parks. What do you do for the Parks and Rec Department? As the recreation coordinator, I get to plan and organize our small- to medium-size events such as Party in YOUR Parks in the summer, our two events with Santa at Christmas time, and, one of my favorites, the Daddy Daughter Dance in spring. I’m also in charge of scheduling monthly exhibits at the Tim Murphy Art Gallery, organizing the Merriam
Farmers’ Market for the summer season, and helping come up with new classes and programs for all ages at the Merriam Community Center. What’s your favorite part about your job? My favorite part of my job is getting to know the residents and being able to offer great neighborhood events for free! I love living and working in the same community! What do you consider a successful event? A successful event for me is when a lot of people are having lots of fun. What are your thoughts about moving into the new Merriam Community Center? I’m excited to now be in the new
Merriam Community Center because there are so many more people who are coming to work out, play, and socialize, which, after all, is what Parks and Rec is all about. What’s something you want Merriam residents to know about the Parks and Rec Department? Something I don’t think many people realize is how far in advance we work to plan and organize events, and we are constantly working to improve and bring new, exciting events to the community.

Be Careful with Fall Fires As temperatures fall, many will gather around recreational fires with their friends and family. Others will want to burn leaves. Both are allowed in Merriam, but here’s what you need to know to stay safe this fall: Recreational Fires No permit is required for fire pits or recreational fires smaller than 3 feet by 2 feet.
Open Burning Fires A permit is required for open burns on public streets and public or private property. They can be no larger than 5 feet by 5 feet.
Remember for recreational and open burning fires: ▶ Only burn seasoned, dry firewood. ▶ Fire pits must be at least 15 feet away from a combustible structure. ▶ Never burn when wind speed exceeds 15 mph or during a burn ban. ▶ Don’t burn on overly cloudy days when clouds can hold down smoke. ▶ Keep a garden hose or fire extinguisher nearby and attend to your fire until it’s safely put out.
Burning Leaves A permit is required to burn leaves. The Overland Park Fire Department will review your permit request, and first-time requests require an on-site visit from a fire inspector. If you want to get rid of your leaves without burning, visit jocogov.org for a list of disposal options. Apply for a burn permit online using the ePlace portal found on merriam.org/fire.

Community Spotlight ............................................. Name:
Stoney Bogan .............................................................
Stoney Bogan moved to Merriam in 2002 from Kansas City, Kansas, with his son and daughter. For that last decade, Bogan has served as the Downtown Merriam Partnership president. He’s also the director of business development at the Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce. You’ll recognize him around town – he’s known for wearing orange sunglasses everywhere he goes, owning more than 50 pairs. What do you like best about Merriam? I know all my neighbors and city staff, and our city government is very approachable about ideas and requests. What do you like to do in Merriam? I like being involved with its growth and policies. And, we love the trails, parks, and the festivities – like Party in YOUR Park – that the Parks and Rec staff provides to the residents. 10 // MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION // FALL 2020
You recently put a par-3 golf course in your backyard, why? We were all getting cabin fever and needed to do something outside. The young kids were all playing together doing their thing, and I wanted to create an activity for us parents to do. So, we turned it into a fundraiser for the Community Veterans Project. What’s the Downtown Merriam Partnership, and what do you do for the organization? I have been the president of this organization for almost 10 years. The purpose of the Downtown Merriam Partnership is to ensure the continuation and the revitalization of Downtown Merriam. In 2018, the DMP won the KRPA Distinguished Public Service Award for all things the organization did for the City of Merriam and its residents. What’s your favorite part about working for the NEJC Chamber of Commerce? Representing hundreds of businesses in the area and the 10 cities in Northeast Johnson County, especially the city I live in – Merriam. What’s a favorite memory you have? Of course, the birth of my children, but throwing out the first pitch at a Kansas City Royals baseball game is a close second.
