DE S TIN ATION DOWNTOWN The downtown is the heart of any community. It’s the place where folks gather to shop, grab a bite to eat, or meet up for a drink. Downtown is the hub of local businesses and the spot where fun community events take place. Downtowns support economic vitality and enhance the experience, image, and lifestyle of the entire town. Merriam’s downtown has been around for a long time. From the early mercantile days of dry goods, bakeries, a meat market, and local watering holes in the 1800s, to the current offering of various dining and drinking establishments, a world-renowned instrument shop, or a zen-like retail boutique, downtown Merriam is a destination all in itself. Check out the things you can do, places you can shop, and sights you can see in downtown Merriam.

Art is easy to find in downtown Merriam. “Still Time” is a tall, stone tower with a large soothing wind chime located at the corner of Johnson Drive and Merriam Drive. Further north at Merriam Marketplace, you’ll find “Planting the Seeds,” where each sphere’s brilliant mirror finish suggests a large, sprouting seed. Another block north at Waterfall Park, look for the playful nine-foot tall caterpillar standing next to a 12foot cairn (a stack of granite river boulders) with a butterfly perched on top. “Hmmm...” was created as a playful exploration of placemaking and identity.

My wife and I enjoy riding our bikes along the paved Turkey Creek Streamway Trail. Along our way, we adore seeing the herons, groundhogs, and ducks that call this creek their home. During our ride, we stop at the Farmers' Market when it is open and enjoy buying local, tasty treats. – The Madden Family 18 | 2021 Merriam Community & Visitor Guide
