It’s our birthday, y’all! This issue marks MeSee’s first birthday and we couldn’t be more excited. As all parents know, the first year of existence brings many challenges, victories, struggles, and celebrations. With each issue, we have learned more about what you guys want to know - things to do in our area with your family, great local businesses, interesting people doing interesting things. Like we said in our very first issue, we don’t have the answers to any of your parenting questions, but we hope to give you some ideas to help navigate the joys, swerves, and curves of parenting. In this issue of MeSee, you can read about local places and local people doing awesome things. After having a birthday party for one of our kids at Wonderland Ice Cream & Family Fun in Stroudsburg, we were blown away and had to share our experience. Talk about above and beyond! We also chatted with an impressive little girl with big goals, learned about unique activities like dancing and horseback riding, and started prepping for back to school. Before we mention back to school though, let’s first focus on all the awesome fairs coming up! We hope you’re having as much fun at MeSee events as we are! Be sure to read about our first birthday party inside this issue - you’re invited! Thank you to everyone who celebrated National Hot Dog Day with us and to our mini-artists, keep the artwork coming it’s one of our favorite parts of MeSee! As always, we love to hear from you! Join us for events. Share your stories and ideas. You can find us on Facebook or email us anytime at info@ meseemag.com. We know that moms and dads have all the secrets and know all the tricks to entertaining kids, so tell us what we need to know! We hope you enjoy this issue of MeSee. Now go have yourself a piece of cake or two. If anyone asks, just tell them you’re celebrating a birthday!

Q & A
WITH MS. JAMIE OF
Academy of Dance I have 34 years of dance experience. I began dancing professionally when I was 18 and my first professional job was at Fernwood Resorts as a featured dancer in review shows. I then moved on to Cunard and Carnival Cruise Lines where I traveled and danced internationally for six years. After I finished dancing on cruise ships, I began teaching at local dance schools. I still continue my education at Broadway Dance Center, Dance Teacher Summit, and The Pulse.
What inspired you to start teaching?
After dancing professionally, I decided that the next step in my career was to share my passion with other dancers. I wanted to inspire students and teach them all that I had learned in the hope that one day they may have the same passion for dance.
Diamond Academy of Dance is one of the best in the Poconos. What do you think sets it apart? Since June 2015, Jamie Lee Farmer, accomplished dancer and educator, has been teaching local dancers from the age of 3 to 18. Professional, warm, and fun, Diamond Academy of Dance has built its reputation as one of the top in the area. We had the chance to catch up with Jamie to learn more about what makes her academy so special.
Diamond Academy's main goal is to stay true to the core of dance itself. We provide our dancers with a strong educational program within a professional, warm, and fun environment. We pay attention to the details in all of our dances. We put on multiple shows each season in an effort to expose our dancers to the stage and give them

performance time as much as possible. Each of our shows has a special theme so that no two shows are ever the same. Each is a new, exciting, and entertaining experience for both our audience and dancers.

Is your staff as experienced and talented as you?
Are the classes only for serious dancers or are they also for individuals who enjoy dance and just want to have fun and learn?
Each member of the staff brings special talents to the studio. We all help each other in the classes and motivate each other. It is also a benefit to our dancers to have teachers with different styles of teaching.
We offer both recreational classes and classes for competitive dancers. We have a Sparkling Diamond Competition Team where our dancers compete regionally and nationally. Diamond Academy is also known for our Diamonettes Kick-line Team.
What type of classes are available and when do your seasons run?
What is your favorite part of owning Diamond Academy of Dance?
We offer a multitude of styles, including tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, lyrical/contemporary, and musical theater. Our season begins on September 11, 2017 and classes will run throughout the year until our Final Showcase on June 24, 2018.
Are there any restrictions on age or abilities? We start dancers at the age of three and they are able to dance with us through the age of 18. There are no restrictions and we encourage all dancers to join us for a class whether they have previous dance experience or not.
I enjoy working with all of the wonderful dancers and people who come into my studio. I am truly blessed with all of the people who have come into my life through the studio. I also love that I am able to have control of the artistic details of our performances.
What is something you would like our readers to know? If you have any questions, please feel free to call the studio at any time at 570-269-3110. We also are available through email at Diamondacademy104@ gmail.com. Diamond Academy of Dance is also on Facebook where we provide information on classes, as

Finding Grace was created by Lisa’s six year old granddaughter Grace. Grace is at the age of trying to understand what it means when someone has cancer. Grace wishes that you could wash your hands and it would go away like all of our other germs. While explaining to Grace about what Cancer is and how her Nana, Lisa, has been fighting the hardest fight anyone could ever imagine, she told Jason and Jenn that she wants to do something, not just for her Nana but for everyone that is being hurt by the cancer bug. She wants to give these cancer fighters peace and “Grace” while they are going through treatments, and surgeries and all that not so fun stuff. We decided at that point that when her Nana was ready and needed a pick me up we would call the benefit “Finding Grace, Through the Fight."

Finding Grace
THROUGH THE FIGHT By: Jamie Bowman
If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Grace Smith, then you understand how she got her name. Grace is your average six-yearold. She loves chocolate milk, can’t wait to start first grade, and enjoys spending summer Fridays with her Nana. But what makes Grace extraordinary is the empathy and selflessness that she displays at just six years old. In 2011, Grace’s grandmother, Lisa Smith, was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has been battling ever since. Understanding cancer can be difficult for anyone, but imagine trying to wrap your head around the destructive disease when you’re still learning how to read and write. Since cancer can’t be washed away like the germs on your hands, as Grace wishes it could, she wanted to help her Nana and others like her. Her parents Jason and Jenn helped her get the ball rolling...literally. This past June, a fundraiser basketball game was played by the faculty and staff of the Pocono Mountain School District in an East vs. West game. A tricky tray was held and, with the help of her sister and her school, Grace coordinated a bake sale. The name of the event? “Finding Grace.” A little grace (and Grace!) can go a long way when you’ve been affected by cancer. Thanks to family, friends, and an overwhelming number of supporters of this amazing cause, approximately $20,000 was raised! In an effort to help find a cure, a portion of the proceeds from the event was donated to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for pancreatic cancer research. We are fortunate to live in a community filled with wonderful people, like Grace. Are you feeling inspired? Donations are still being accepted through the Smith family’s church. Please make checks payable to St. Mark’s Community Lutheran Church and mail to the address below. Every little bit makes a difference.

Nestled in Barrett Township in the small village of Cresco, Basso has been serving authentic Italian favorites since 2010. We’re talking so much more than just spaghetti and meatballs. What’s even better than Basso’s cuisine is the story of its name. The Pipolos wanted to incorporate all of their families into the business, so they came together and created the acronym “Basso.” Each letter represents a member of the next generation. Clever, right?! Along with owners Billy Pipolo, Jr. and Kim Stephens, Executive Chef, Bruce, and restaurant Manager, Val, run the show at Basso. While Bruce whips up delectable dinners in the kitchen, Val is behind the bar concocting delicious drinks. Don’t visit Basso without treating yourself to a glass (or two) of Val’s seasonal sangria. With all of the incredible menu options, you may have difficulty making a decision. Start with the Rhode Island Calamari, Billy’s go-to appetizer. Then treat yourself to the Seafood Portuguese - clams, mussels, shrimp,
Basso features everything from pizza to pasta. (Speaking of pizza, did you know you can order that to go?!) Indulge in the Salmon Filet, prepared to your liking, or try the salad sampler, a Basso favorite. This tapas style menu is perfect when you can’t decide what to order. Share several “small plates” with your date and try all of your favorites. When ordering from the bar menu, choose to dine in the bar area or sit outside and enjoy the final days of summer. So, what makes Basso so great? At Basso, you’ll indulge in fine Italian food at an affordable price. Whether you’re ordering from the bar menu or enjoying a quiet meal in the dining room, you’ll end the night with a full belly and full pockets. But save room for dessert, because Kim’s cheesecake is out of this world! Reservations are strongly recommended, so call ahead to claim your spot in the bar, outside, or in the dining room. And, of course, scope out the menu online before you go. Buon Appetito!

Harford Fair August 10 - 24
Since 1858, the Harford Fair has been an opportunity to celebrate agriculture, family, and community in Northeastern PA. From the diaper-clad to the octogenarian, there is something for everyone. Play “Farmer for a Day,” learn how bees make honey, or milk a goat. Interesting artifacts which give an overview of the history of the fair can be seen in the Founders Museum and the New Log Cabin. Hungry? Let the dining hall crew heap your plate full of real home cookin’, sink your teeth into a funnel cake, potato pancake, corn on the cob, or baked potato. The fair is a guilt-free zone! Whatever tickles your taste buds can be found at the Harford Fair. Highlights of the main arena events include three nights of tractor and truck pulls in addition to the popular annual events of the rodeo, horse pulls, woodsman’s contest, demolition derby, and a featured country western show. At the north end of the main arena is the horse arena which features a variety of equestrian events throughout the week. Daily demonstrations abound throughout the fair which include chainsaw carving and stained glass work, some of which is auctioned off to the public on Saturday afternoon. Throughout fair week, thirteen different acts will perform in the Shade Pavilion, providing constant entertainment in a comfortable seated area. harfordfair.com www.facebook.com/HarfordFair

Its eminently touchable attractions explore science in disciplines ranging from sports to space. Films assume grand proportions on the Tuttleman IMAX Theater’s 79-foot domed screen; galaxies are formed and deep space explored in North America’s second-oldest planetarium, which reopened in 2002, sporting the continent’s most advanced technology. Teacher Says: Back to School Checklist By: Jamie Bowman
Congratulations, parents! You’ve made it through the summer, and it’s finally time to send the kids back to school! There’s nothing quite like the first day of school. Freshly sharpened pencils, new shoes, a blank agenda planner waiting to be filled - is there anything more exciting? I loved the first days of school so much I became a teacher! (Just kidding...but seriously, the first day is the best!) Have you made your back-to-school list and checked it twice? If not, no problem! The best thing about each new school year is the opportunity for a fresh start. Whether you’re sending your little ones off to second grade or senior year, it’s important to be prepared. Here are a few tips to help make the transition from summer vacation to getting an education as seamless as possible. 36 • MeSee Magazine

supplies from the store • Scraps of fabric at least 9” x 11” (4-5 different patterns) $1.99 @ Local Fabric Shop
It’s funny how kids are always drawn to certain toys and normally those toys are the ones you would never expect. You can buy an expensive toy from the store that lights up, throws balls all around the room and tickles your kids’ feet, but they will still want to play with the jar of loose change or Tupperware lids. In an effort to keep the kids from playing with things like loose change, I frequently find myself browsing the aisles of Target and searching Pinterest for the perfect toy; however, I’ve come to the realization that the perfect toy can also be the most simple toy. Many of the crafts in our magazines, like this beanbag toss, are recreations of old favorites. A few beanbags, a bucket and there you have it – hours of fun and just minutes to make!
1. Cut fabric down into 5 in x 5 in squares. 6 squares for each pattern.
2.
Put your fabric squares right sides together.
3. Next sew each square together leaving about a 2 inch opening on one side
4. T urn each square right sides out. And poke out corners. 5. Fill each bag about ½ way will lentils. 6.
Then sew each bag shut at the 2 inch opening. (should have 4 sets with 3 bean bags in each) Set aside.
7.
Trace the bottom of the pail onto a piece of paper and then pin to 2 pieces of fabric. Cut a 1/2 “ around the circle (for seam allowance). Cut the same size out of the quilting batting. Then layer the exterior fabrics with their right sides facing and pin the batting on top. Sew 1/4 “ all the way around and leave a 2 “ opening for turning. Trim excess fabric around the seam. When you turn the exterior fabric over the batting it should have it’s right side facing up. Sew closed.
8. Paint number 1 on one bucket, 2 on a bucket and 3 on the other. 9.
Place the buckets at varying distances and start tossing.
