From MeSee We’re TWO! This issue marks MeSee’s second birthday - hooray! When two year olds aren’t busy being terrible, they’re joyful and fun which is exactly what we strive to be. Positive, joyful, and fun! Over the last year we have learned what our readers love most about MeSee, and that’s our positive message and fun content. We’re happy you turn to us when you’re looking for uplifting stories about local families and different events and opportunities to share with your loved ones. We’ve also learned how much fun it is to see your children’s artwork within our pages. Nothing makes us happier than when you submit a masterpiece made specially for us! If your little artist wants to create a cover for us, please keep in mind that our covers are vertical and we need to be able to put our logo over top of it. Seasonal colors and festive concepts are appreciated too! This issue is packed full of ideas to fill your final days of summer. Plan a quick camping trip to Keen Lake, enjoy one of the many fairs and festivals going on this time of year, and get ready to head back to school. You can also read about some great education programs Northampton Community College offers kids of all ages. Is your child into baking, art, or technology? How about music? We have information on where to take music lessons and foster your child’s love of sound. We have interviews with awesome local families and some cool crafts, courtesy of our friend Kelly at Country Home Learning. As always, we love to hear from you! Share your stories and ideas, pictures of your family, and more. You can find us on Facebook or email us anytime at info@meseemag.com. We know that moms and dads have all the secrets and know all the tricks to entertaining kids, so tell us what we need to know. Like we said in our very first issue, we don’t have the answers to any of your parenting questions, but we hope to give you some ideas to help navigate the joys, swerves, and curves of parenting. Now go have yourself a piece of cake or two. If anyone asks, just tell them you’re celebrating a birthday!

Q&A with Kelly & Jason, Owners of Poke-A-Nose Pottery
Q&Aw/ KELLY & JASON OWNERS OF POKE-A-NOSE POTTERY
To provide an exciting and inspirational atmosphere where every one can create lasting memories. That’s the mission at Poke-A-Nose Pottery, and Kelly, Jason and their son, Drake, are there to ensure you make the most of your visit. Whatever your age or skill level, crafting your own piece is a great time for the whole family. We had the chance to learn more about this awesome studio, including how it all began and what makes it so great. 6 • MeSee Magazine

High School in Kissimmee, FL. Jason has a BA in Music/ Music Education with trombone/brass, and I have a BFA in Fine Art with concentrations in ceramics and painting and a BA in Psychology. My LOVE for art naturally brought the two art forms together, so painting ON pottery was a perfect choice for my career in life. The studio had a bittersweet start. My mother passed away in 1999, and, with my small inheritance and an angel on my shoulder, Jason and I started Poke-A-Nose Pottery on August 1, 2002. Without my Mom, Poke-A-Nose Pottery would still just be a dream. Then, after almost a decade of trying, we finally added a member to the Poke-A-Nose family. Drake joined us on August 20, 2010 and helped with our booth at the West End Fair at four days old. He’s been “helping” ever since!
This was one of the first interactive art studios in our area. How did you come up with the idea and bring it to life?
Our studio is considered a contemporary studio. This idea started in the 90s, either in California or New York City - there is a big debate over that. While we attended the University of Tampa, there were four or five studios within a few miles of the campus. Some came to the university to do activities with the students and some we went to just for fun. After a few years, we realized we REALLY liked it and did lots of research on how to start one. One day, about a month before Jason graduated, I received a call that my grandfather was very sick and we need to move to take care of my grandparents. Just two days after Jason’s graduation, we moved to PA. After helping my grandpa get back to a healthier state, Jason and I started looking for a storefront while taking grandpa to dialysis and back, three days a week. Finally, we found a modest place in a good location with lots of room. We rented it, ordered the pottery, kilns, tables and chairs, and paint -
even born. He learned to crawl, walk, talk, and run all at the studio. For us, business and family go together. We have made LOTS of family memories at the studio, and they are SO cherished. However, it can be hard when both the studio and the family need our full attention at the same time. Our son has, unfortunately, learned that sometimes business comes first. We have to miss out on many events and plans because the business is how we make our money and feed our family. The balance of the two is very tricky. Our family is part of our business, which can be a tug of war at times. The number one thing that helps us balance business and family is having a few awesome and trustworthy employees so we can get out of the studio once in a while.
What can a new customer find at Poke-A-Nose Pottery?
We have more than just pottery to paint; we have a welcoming atmosphere, creativity, laughter, happiness, imagination, and wonder, too. Okay, besides all that, we have a relatively new art medium in our studio called Glass Fusion. Glass Fusion is a pretty “hot” art form - it is the process of layering glass pieces that have the same melting and cooling temps and creating a design with the different glass colors and shapes. The glass is not hot when you design it; it stays at room temperature while you work with it. Then, we fire your glass creation in a kiln to fuse, or melt, it together. It’s a neat process. All of our art mediums need to be finished by being fired in a kiln, which is a seven day process. There is no need to be intimidated to come into the studio. We have many ways of helping you make a wonderful piece of art. From stamps and stencils to different techniques and artists on staff, we can help you with ideas and designs.

Tucked away on North Eighth Street in downtown Stroudsburg, Gamut is owned and operated by Jim and Mary Evanisko, art devotees whose long-held affinity for the Poconos led to the opening of their mini-museum last May. “This area was a once an aesthetic haven,” Jim recalls.
This initiative commences in September, and Jim views it as a vehicle to jump-start an exuberance for adroit technique. “If children are even slightly interested in art, and see a possible future in it, then this could be the place for them. Conversation is the whole point of education.”

It's time to gather at the lake.
Summer vacation is something many of us look forward to all year. Whether it’s a trip to the beach, an amusement park, or a national landmark, every vacation can be stressful when traveling with a carload of kids. Between the usual car trip complaints and sleepless nights in a hotel room, topped off with a hefty price tag, vacation can make you wonder if it was really even worth it. Why did you plan a family vacation in the first place? To get away and enjoy each other? To leave the stresses of everyday life behind? To try something new? Whatever your reasons, a summer vacation doesn’t need to be an expensive, elaborate trip. Fun can be found right in your own backyard at Keen Lake Camping & Cottage Resort.

PILSNERS AND PORTERS. Saisons and Stouts.
Do I have your attention? Good. There’s a new place in town and it deserves to be placed at the top of your to-do list. On your next date night, head to Wallenpaupack Brewing Company in Hawley, PA I’m always excited to try new places and, more specifically, new beers. So when I heard about Wallenpaupack Brewing Company, I had to check it out. On September 30, 2017, Becky Ryman opened Wallenpaupack Brewing Company, under the guidance of her cousin, a fellow brewer. “We felt the area needed something fun and new, so we decided to open the brewery here,” explained Becky. And, boy, are we lucky they did! When you arrive at WBC, grab a food and drink menu, then find a seat. If the weather’s nice, you can’t beat the patio. Order your drinks at the front counter, and place any food orders at the side counter, near the patio entrance. You’ll receive a number and your food will be delivered to your table when it’s ready. Looking for a little entertainment while you wait? Play a round of cornhole or grab a game from WBC’s selection. There’s something about Jenga and beer that just go together. If you’ve never been to a brewery, the most important piece of advice I can offer you is to order a flight. What’s a flight you ask? Only the most wonderful menu option in the world! At WBC, a flight consists of four beer samples of your choice.
J

e
Simply fill out a card (available at the bar) and voila - four baby beers are presented to you in a convenient little box. This is the best way to decide which beers are your favorite before you graduate to a full-size beer. At WBC, all of the beers are brewed on site and 10+ varieties are available on any given day. Right now, I’m loving No Wake Zone Orange Peel Lager. IPA lovers should try Largemouth IPA, and if light beers are your thing, grab a class of Paupack Cream Ale. With so many great options, you can see why a flight is necessary! WBC even offers a selection of great Pennsylvania wines and ciders. Please note: I highly recommend visiting WBC on an empty stomach. No, I’m not trying to get you drunk; the food is just that good. From pretzels to poutine, each menu option pairs perfectly with a cold brew. Menu items are always changing, which keeps things exciting for returning customers. As for me, I would order the flight of tacos again and again. What’s not to love about THREE different types of tacos? Planning a special event? WBC is the perfect location for birthday parties, bridal showers, and more. Simply call or send an email to info@wallenpaupackbrewingco. com for more information. Be on the lookout this fall for an anniversary party in celebration of WBC’s first birthday! To stay in the loop about special events, beer menus, and more, “like” Wallenpaupack Brewing Company on Facebook.

What if I told you an extracurricular activity could help improve your child’s abilities in math and reading? And that that same activity may enhance his respiratory systems and boost his listening skills? Studies show that playing an instrument can lead to these positive effects and many more. playing the piccolo or the piano, the instructors at Big Bug are well equipped to teach beginner to expert musicians. Better yet, Big Bug prides itself on being a family-friendly location. Not only is it safe and clean, but it’s a place that strives to create a fun environment for kids. For $25, your child will receive a 30-minute, one-on-one lesson. While guitar, drums, and piano lessons are some of the most popular, Big Bug offers lessons for a wide variety of instruments. Vocal lessons, with Shawnee Playhouse’s Midge McClosky, are available too. Whether your child is interested in improving her skills for the school play or wants to sing like Taylor Swift, Midge is ready to help. Looking for someone to come to you? Andrea Stiff, a Kutztown University graduate and General Music Specialist within the Pocono Mountain School District, offers private, in-home music lessons. Andrea has years of experience, both playing and teaching music. Though her instruments of choice are in the brass family, Andrea has taught woodwinds and strings, including the ukulele! Lessons are 30 minutes and cost just $15. For more information or to schedule a lesson with Andrea, call 570.369.0749 or email andreastiff@gmail.com. So when is the right time to begin lessons? Big Bug says skills really start to “stick” at age 6, but younger children who can focus for at least 30 minutes are welcome to attend. They’ll never turn a customer away simply because of age.
