Funfetti Oreo Cookies By: Kate Lewis

1 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
•
10 Oreos, crushed into pieces
1 and 1/4 cups vanilla boxed cake mix
In a large bowl, sift together flour, cake mix, and baking soda. Set aside.
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with
3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
paddle attachment, cream the softened butter and
1/2 cup granulated sugar
both sugars together on medium speed until smooth.
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
Add the egg and mix on high until combined, about
1 egg, at room temperature 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup sprinkles - I used Son of a Nutcracker from fancysprinkles.com
1 minute. Add the vanilla and beat on high until combined. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix on low-medium speed until just combined. Add the chocolate chips, sprinkles, and crushed Oreos. Mix on low until the add-ins are evenly disbursed. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours, or up to 3 days. Preheat oven to 350°F Scoop rounded balls of the cold dough onto a baking sheet. Use about 2 Tablespoons of cookie dough per cookie. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes until edges are slightly browned. The centers will still appear very soft, but the cookies will set as they cool. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 4 minutes and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

If the Big Apple is blanketed in snow, trek to any of a dozen local recreation facilities for some sledding. Manhattan’s Central Park, along with Prospect Park in Brooklyn, are classic spots to enjoy slip-sliding fun. The former also boasts ample ice skating on Wollman Rink and, while in Brooklyn borough, venture to Dyker Heights and rejoice in magnificent annual decor. Residents may not label their efforts as a competition, but visitors appreciate the displays with a cheeky grin as adult elves outdo their yearly efforts.

FOR YOU & YOURS TO TREASURE By: Kimberly Blaker
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Eid al-Fitr, Bodhi Day, or the winter solstice, holiday traditions are a fun way for families to bond and create fond memories. The traditions you choose are limited only by your imagination in the way you and your family carry them out. The following are a few fun traditions to consider.
COZ Y E S C A P E S Escape the holiday hustle and bustle, and enjoy a holiday retreat. Try a cozy cabin in the woods or another scenic setting. Then enjoy your togetherness near a roasting fire, flipping through family photo albums, enjoying holiday music, doing crafts, and other relaxing activities.

Decorate the bathroom in holiday candles, fragrance, and holly. Throw on some holiday or other relaxing music. Then enjoy a long bubble bath and give yourself a full salon treatment. Include a manicure, pedicure, deep hair conditioning, facial mask, and body buff. Discontinue holiday traditions that have lost their appeal and usefulness or that create too much stress. Talk to your family members or friends who share in the tradition, explain your feelings, and ask for input. They may feel the same. time, energy, or money. Taking on too many can cause stress and lead traditions to lose their appeal.

When you choose traditions, divide the responsibilities. Women often take sole responsibility for holiday activities, which can be overwhelming and interfere with their ability to really enjoy the season. So try not to strive for perfection, and allow men and children to help in the preparation. By keeping these tips in mind and being flexible, you and your family can enjoy holiday traditions for years to come.

So, we did just that. Madeleine Besser, owner of MadTime Fitness in Tannersville, gave us some great advice on taking those first steps, managing your expectations, and staying focused throughout the year. “Baby steps” says Maddy, it’s that simple. Whether you are new to working out, you took a work out hiatus during the holidays, or you’re looking to ‘up' your fitness game, the first step is embracing the change.
Do not dive in head first. Let’s repeat that. Do NOT dive in head first! If you polished off the rest of the holiday cookies on December 31st, don’t workout for 20 hours and eat only lettuce for the next 4 days. “Excitement is great to an extent” says Maddy. But with extreme changes comes soreness, fatigue, discouragement and often failure.

important to remember why you got started in the first place. “Was it trying clothes on at a store? Was it putting on a pair of jeans you own and they were really tight? Was it sitting on the floor and not being able to get up on your own? Was it walking up a flight of stairs and being out of breath? Remembering what triggered your eagerness to make a change will help discipline kick in. I always believed that discipline is what keeps you going to reach your goals. Yes, motivation may get you started but discipline is what keeps you on track.” You don’t need to join a gym to achieve your goals for the new year but having knowledgeable instructors and the support of others is certainly beneficial. At MadTime Fitness, “I suggest trying one to two fitness classes a week or whatever choice of exercise that may be and give at least one day of rest in between. Keep the goal SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Calibrated). Once you know you can stick with the goal of working out 2x a week, then increase the days slowly. trees
Christmas When I decided to make this “easy” holiday craft with my kids I was pretty confident that we would all be able to create a beautifully beaded tree with minimal struggles. There were only a few supplies involved, no one would be required to share anything, and all would go smoothly. Well. I was wrong. Once again, my children have proven
Christmas Edition
to me that they can make even the smallest, most enjoyable of projects a challenge. As you have already witnessed, I am not great at crafts…or baking….or maybe even parenting considering how my children conduct themselves during “craft time.” I guess the wise thing to do would be to practice in advance before adding my kids into the mix but then you would miss out on the whole experience. So, here is what you’re in for…. you might want to pour yourself a drink first.

Card stock or thick paper that won’t tear easily Scissors Ruler Pencil Plastic sewing needles for kids Beads (make sure the holes of the beads are large enough to fit your needles through) Green Yarn Markers for decorating Star for the tree top
step 1! First, you need to ask yourself if your kids are capable of sharing. Be honest with yourself. There’s no judgement. If you’re on the fence, you should just go ahead and sort out those beads so that each kid has the same amount and color combinations. Trust me, this will save you alot of problems going forward.
step 2! Each kid will need a piece of card stock, long strand of yarn, plastic needle and bowl of beads.
step 3! Using a pencil, put a mark at the top of the card stock where your star will be. From that point, put a line of dots down each side of the card stock making an outline of the tree.
Have the beads been spilled all over your table yet? No? Just wait….
step 4! Using your plastic needle, pop holes in the card stock at the points you just marked out. Surprisingly, even plastic needles can cause puncture wounds so it might be best if you take the reins on this one. Don’t worry, your kids will wait patiently while you pop holes for everyone. Right?
NOW, there go the beads…. Oh, wait…there’s another one, and another one….
step 5! Now, thread your needle, string it through one of the top holes and tie the end at the back. Again, things you will likely have to do. Aren’t your kids having so much fun watching you!?
step 6! Tell your kids to pick up the beads off the floor for the 97th time.
step 7! After the knot is tied, sew your tree from side to side, adding in beads as decoration.
step 8-29! Re-thread your kid’s needle over and over and over and over, etc.
step 30! After the tree is completed, tie off the yarn in the back, add your star, and decorate.
helpful tips • You WILL un-sew the entire tree multiple times to fix knotted yarn. Your kids will yell at you for ruining their tree. • The needles will likely be used as weapons at some point. • You will contemplate using the needle as a weapon on yourself after re-threading them endlessly • Your kid might lose interest halfway though. You will then finish the tree. They will then take all the credit.
