From MeSee Do you love summer? Do you look forward to this time of year? Do your kids also nag you and fight at the slightest sign of boredom? Do the words “I’m BORED” ring in your ears daily? Summertime can be such a conundrum. While we as parents look forward to the end of school, we also dread it at the same time. Rest? Relaxation? Will we really be getting that during the next few months? No. The answer is definitely no. BUT now is the time to make some memories and cut yourself some slack. I know work responsibilities don’t go away during the summer months, but let’s let the other stuff slide. Don’t worry about dishes. Eat frozen pizza or hot dogs every night. Hang outside until the sun goes down, blowing bubbles or playing tag. Those are the things your kids will remember. This issue of MeSee is full of summer fun. We have ideas for quick day trips and visits to the zoo, plus lots of local events and crafts to try at home. Our area has all kinds of activities for families to do together this season, and we’re looking forward to getting out and trying them too. Keep your eye out for us; we’ll be hitting up local events and grabbing pictures for our next issue. When your kids start singing the song of boredom, give them some art supplies and put them to work on our next cover. Each cover of MeSee is created by our readers. If the size is right and the colors fit, we’ll feature your kid’s artwork as well as his or her picture on the inside cover. We love making our mini artists famous! We also want to feature your family! Send us an email or message on Facebook and tell us about your family. Our Family Feature in each issue is for local families to tell us what they like to do together. Check out our Family Feature in this issue to see what we’re talking about. As always, we love to hear from you. Share your ideas, stories, and more. You can find us on Facebook or email us anytime at info@meseemag.com. We know that moms and dads have all the secrets and know all the tricks to entertaining kids, so tell us what we need to know! We hope you continue to enjoy MeSee Magazine as much as we enjoy creating it. Now get out and make some memories!

Is it possible to cover all your child’s needs in one appointment? It sure is! Dr. Craig Bair, owner of Bair Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Justin Bair, owner of Bair Orthodontics, and Dr. Daniel Bair, of Pocono Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, work together to create a one-stop shop for all of your children’s dental health needs…and yours too! I was raised in Stroudsburg, and I am a proud alumnus of the Stroudsburg Area School District. My wife, Lauren, works as a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, and we are blessed to have a 5-year-old son, Ari, and a 3-year-old daughter, Ava. I graduated from

themselves occupied. Children should also be aware that their parents are invited back into the operatories during their visits. Once in the treatment room, I like to take some time to get to know my patients; I find it particularly important when treating children to build a rapport and establish a sense of trust to help reduce the anxiety some patients have during dental appointments. During the first visit, we also discuss each child’s medical history and provide parents with an opportunity to share any concerns or questions they may have regarding their child’s oral health.
From a position standpoint, standing/sitting behind your child allows for a more natural arm position when brushing, while allowing your non-dominant hand to help your child open. For toddlers, distraction and modeling often help. For example, try counting, singing a song, holding a favorite toy, watching something on a device, or listening to a song. Brushing at the same time as the parent is a great way to model good brushing. As your child gets older, it is important to emphasize the

health. If untreated, oral disease, such as cavities or periodontal (gum) disease, can lead to pain, infection, and loss of function. For kids, this can adversely affect eating/nutrition, learning, communication, and normal growth and development. Periodontal disease has been associated with cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Oral diseases can also increase the risk for problems with esthetics and a developing psyche, such as lower self-esteem and selfconfidence.
At what age do kids start requiring the help of an orthodontist? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. While most children won’t begin active orthodontic therapy until adolescence, an early evaluation provides orthodontists with an opportunity to treat developing problems and guide jaw growth and permanent teeth into a more favorable position.
Correct. My older brother, Justin, is a Board Certified orthodontist. I find it incredibly beneficial and convenient for patients to have to such easy access to an orthodontic specialist. Dr. Justin and I work at the same office and are often available for treatment during the same hours, which allows your children to have their dental and orthodontic needs evaluated simultaneously, without the need for multiple appointments at different locations.
What is the most common piece of advice you give parents regarding their children's oral health?
It is important to implement a pattern of good home care for your child and offer a diet that reduces the risk of developing cavities. It’s easy to forget that cavities are not just based on how much sugar children eat/drink, but also on how long that sugar is on the teeth. Limiting drinks with sugar (including milk) to mealtimes only and encouraging children to drink only water in-between meals and at night is really helpful at reducing tooth decay.

One of the highlights is the petting zoo, where visitors can pet and feed the goats, deer, and lambs. Guests are also able to interact with is the Lory Parrot, a small Australian bird. At scheduled times each day, visitors may enter the Lory Parrot area, hang out with the birds, and feed them. The staff distributes apple slices and the colorful birds fly down and land on shoulders and arms to enjoy their snack. According to Mr. Hall, Claws ‘N’ Paws was the first zoo on the east coast to open a Lory feeding area 25 years ago and is one of the most anticipated events at the zoo. “It’s an unusual and exciting encounter for the public. The birds think of people as big toys they can play with.”

Another popular event is feeding the friendly giraffe, one of the zoo's more exotic animals. The giraffe likes to interact with people and give kisses. Giraffe feedings are held three times a day, and people are given carrots to feed the giraffe. This gentle animal has no problem taking carrots from eager palms. Mr. Hall explains that Claws ‘N’ Paws is the only zoo in the country where the public is given food to feed the giraffes. While the Lory Parrot and the giraffe are crowd favorites, Mr. Hall has a soft spot for the snow leopards. “Two years ago, three babies were born—Alex, Abby, and Gabriel. I had a chance to cuddle them and it was so thrilling.”
It's an unusual and exciting encounter for the public.

e e K f ' f O e ? a i g r o e G s i o h W by: Kelly Gillow at Country Home Learning & Art Center Georgia was one of America's most famous female artists.
Born in 1887, Georgia lived on her family's dairy farm in Wisconsin which was a great place to learn about nature. Georgia did so well with her art lessons as a child she went to art school & college in New York City and decided to make art her life purpose. Georgia's big, bold flower paintings became famous in New York City where people began falling in love with her artwork.
Georgia's favorite art studio was inside of a Model-A Ford. She would rearrange the inside of the car and paint inside to keep away from the swarming bees and the desert's hot sun. Georgia O'Keeffe died in 1986. She lived to be 98 years old and has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism". Find more Georgia O'Keeffe facts on meseemag.com

Family Feature LOCAL
The McCarthy Family Lara, a Reading Speacialist/Dyslexia Practioner for a Lehigh Valley school district, and Jennifer, a Chief Human Resources Officer for the Greater Valley YMCA, welcomed Samantha into their family from foster care when she was 17 months old and their lives changed for the better. While it was not an easy journey - 18 months of caseworkers, court cases, and birth family visits - it was totally worth every moment. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart, but every single day is a new adventure and a blessing for them. They became an “official” family just before Samantha’s 3rd birthday when her adoption was finalized. They try to help other families looking to grow their families by sharing their story of adoption. 28 • MeSee Magazine
What is your favorite thing to do together as a family?
Momma LARA Making Memories. We have had some significant losses in our family over the past few years, and this has taught us that spending time together is what is most important. It isn’t about the “stuff” in your life; it is all about making memories with your loved ones.
Momma JENNIFER Exploring and learning about new places and things during our family adventures. We love being able to travel, even locally, to explore and see new things together. We both spend a lot of time commuting during our working lives, so being able to be a family and watch Samantha grow as we spend time together is truly amazing.

GETAWAYS Ideas by Age Group by: Karen Bumbaugh, from Been There Done That With Kids
Choosing the perfect summer getaway for your family is a difficult decision. Many factors weigh into the choice, such as driving distance, each family member’s unique interests, and, of course, budget. Age appropriateness of the destinations should also be considered, and we’ve got you covered! Here are four summer, weekend getaways to please children of each age group.

the younger crowd. Heaps of kiddie and family-friendly rides greet you as you walk through the castle doors, including favorites like the train, log flume, and antique cars. Enjoy time cooling off in Duke’s Lagoon, the water play section of the park. Then, listen to a story read by a princess, or sit in the splash zone at the diving show. This year, the park opened a new suspended family roller coaster which simulates a magical journey with Merlin the Magician, in search of his fun-loving, but mischievous, dragon friend named Mayhem. 30 • MeSee Magazine
Pittsburgh, also known as Kidsburgh, has tons of activities and destinations to offer this age group. Visit the MAKESHOP, a maker station in the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, full of the materials and tools to get your child’s imagination flowing. Next, get dizzy and disoriented in the museum’s gravity room, and don’t forget to bring a change of clothes for the water play area. Kennywood and Sandcastle are an obvious pair to topoff your getaway to Pittsburgh. Kennywood is an historic
amusement park in the nearby town of West Mifflin and offers a wide variety of kid-friendly and thrilling roller coasters. Sandcastle Water Park, a bit closer to the city, boasts a dozen water slides, shallow-water play area, and a wave pool. The best scenario for visiting Sandcastle is when your child reaches over 48 inches barefoot, then they can take advantage of the large water slides.
8 year-olds and up SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW JERSEY Adventure awaits the eight and over crowd with a mix of dry rides and water slides in New Jersey. Diggerland USA, a

unique construction-themed park in West Berlin, New Jersey, is a kid’s paradise. Even if your child is not obsessed with backhoes and diggers, who doesn’t want a chance to operate these large machines in this fun, controlled environment? Five new rides were added this year, including a zip line which towers 130 feet off the ground. Even more thrills are to be had at Six Flags Great Adventure, where the #1 wooden roller coaster and the tallest roller coaster in the world call this large amusement park home. Even if your child is not interested in thrill rides, there’s still plenty to do. An animal safari, various shows, and tamer rides will fill the day with fun. If bad weather tries to ruin your New Jersey getaway, Sahara Sam’s Oasis can save the day with an indoor water park which hosts various slides and a lazy river. If the weather is beautiful, there’s even an outdoor section of the water park, so you can soak up the sun. Enjoy the summer with your children by planning a getaway to

GARDEN It’s time to get outside, get dirty, learn, and have some fun! Gardening with your kids not only cultivates flowers or food but also valuable life lessons. Working in the dirt helps to develop nurturing skills, empowers kids, inspires creativity, teaches responsibility, and provides a sense of accomplishment. No matter how much space you have, gardening can be easy, even if you don’t have any experience. Here are a few ideas to help get you started and make gardening fun for you and your kids.

beans, peas, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, and tomatoes. When choosing your seeds, be mindful of how the plants like to grow. Just check out the back of the seed packet - all of the directions for successful planting are described on the back. Time to play in the dirt! If you’re planting in your back yard, you’ll need to turn up the soil and get it ready for planting. If you’re using a planter, fill it up with soil to prepare for planting, and then plant your seeds according to their directions.
Depending on the amount of space you have available, whether in your yard, porch, or driveway, you can select a planter that’s just the right size. It can be a pot, a bucket, an empty crate, a raised bed, or just spot in your yard - be creative! You can find lots of ideas on Pinterest to fit any location of your

your plywood scrap using 1 ¼” screws.
I found the plans for our sandbox via Ana White’s website, with the project contributed by Gina of Lady Goats. Gina’s sandbox was just what I was looking for. It was big, included built-in benches perfect for sitting and truck parking, and also had a lid. Living in the woods, a tight, waterproof cover was a necessity, so I topped off the project with a simple shower curtain cover. Thanks to Gina, my sons now have a new favorite spot in the backyard, and I get to bask in the sun while watching them dig holes, bury trucks and haul sand.
Next, choose the bottom of your sandbox and attach to
5.
Attach two of the top planks to either side of the sandbox, spacing them apart about ½” inch. I would suggest laying all of your planks across the box prior to attaching them and measuring the distance between them to ensure they will all be evenly distributed at the end. Be sure to countersink your screws through the top.
6. Next, build what will become the seat(s) by screwing two planks onto the 2 x 4 armrest. You will need to make sure the 2 x 4s are far enough in from the edge (about 1”) to allow them to fold into the box. Test your seat by laying it on top of the sandbox. You will also want to make sure the
1. Cut your boards to the following dimensions:

• 1 x 8 @ 46” (2) Short Sides of Box
• 1 x 4 @ 47 ½” (12) Top Planks

spacing of your top planks is even. (Make two of these).
7. Attach 4 of the hinges (2 per seat) to the seats. You will be attaching the hinges on the second and third planks in from each side.
8. Next, build the backs to your seats by screwing your remaining planks to the ends of the 2 x 4s. Again, watch your spacing. (Make two of these).
9. Add the remaining four hinges to the fourth and fifth planks in from each side on the inside of the lid (easier to do with the seat “up”).

10. Screw the 4 handles into each of the four 2x4s when the sandbox is closed.
11. Lastly, cut the shower curtain down to an appropriate size. Attach eight Velcro disks to the ends of each side of the sandbox and then attach the opposite side of the Velcro disks to the shower curtain. This results in an easily removable, colorful, waterproof cover.
