Monroe County Habitat for Humanity serves our community. The most common misconception is that they give free homes to unemployed people, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Tell us about the general mission of Monroe County Habitat for Humanity (MCHFH)?
Many people believe that Habitat for Humanity gives free homes to unemployed people; that could not be further from the truth. Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is based on “neighbors helping neighbors with a hand up, not a hand out.” MCHFH helps get homeowners and struggling renters who earn 60% or less of median income into safer, more decent homes. The people who participate in MCHFH’s programs are called partner families. Partner families contribute sweat equity hours and pay for their homes or the materials to repair their homes through low and zero interest loans.

ow that summer is here, families are planning their schedules and deciding what to do in between picnics,
sleepovers, camp, and other fun outings. This season, add a visit to the only premier science center in the Pocono Mountains region, where people of all ages can discover nature and astronomy under one roof. At the Schisler Museum of Wildlife and Natural History and the McMunn Planetarium at East Stroudsburg University (ESU), there are engaging collections, innovative programs, and excitement for the curious and adventurous. This is partly in thanks to ESU alums Art and Fannie Schisler, who decided to donate their big game trophies to the university so students could learn about the animals and the habitats they live in. The museum was completed in 2014 and has been officially open to the public for three years. Curator Cathy Klingler says the facility is mostly staffed by university students and is an ideal “learning laboratory for them. They lead the tours, work at the front desk, and run the films. Wander through the museum and study the exhibits for an up-close understanding of many animals, including birds, fish, raptors, and other wildlife. Gaze in wonder and let your imagination soar inside the 30-foot planetarium dome. The museum features more than 130 wildlife species from around the globe in world class habitat recreations. In addition, there is a display of insects, touchable items, and a tropical waters aquarium. The planetarium launches stargazers into the depths of space through a state-of-theart digital projection system.

According to Ms. Klingler, last year 9,000 visitors came to the museum and planetarium. With additional educational programs and events added each year, she expects continued interest and participation. An upcoming event is Nature by Night—a flashlight tour held on the first Friday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. Children ages four to 13 can wear their favorite pajamas and explore the world’s habitats in the dark, guided by the light from their flashlights. “We’ll talk about how animals use their five senses in the dark,” says Ms. Klingler. The architect and self-proclaimed “King-o-Luna” has reshaped his compound, nixing Sherwin-Williams in favor of taxidermy, bottle caps, miniatures, stringed instruments, yardsticks, and religious icons. An artist skilled in several mediums, Boscarino created a four-panel, stained glass mural depicting the journey of life from infancy to death, the perfect bathroom accompaniment to a stream of running water that trickles down through pastel-colored gravy boats. Bubbling over on eight acres, the environmental madness consists of Boscarino’s gingerbread chalet, his gardens, a studio, scattered monuments, and a just-purchased annex house next door. It was a tinge of nostalgia that spurred him to stake his claim here. “I grew up in Piscataway and used to go to summer camp at Stokes [State Forest], so I knew the area a bit,” he recalls. “I started a jewelry business in 1986 and was looking for a place of my own. I really just stumbled upon it after pounding the pavement for a couple years. The building was an old hunting lodge, and the family that owned it hadn’t been around for a long time.” Artistry is part of Boscarino’s lineage, which dates back to the Medicis in Italy. During his youth, he was inspired by parents who usually tackled multiple, around-the-house projects at
sculptures, walls, and spires. Nearly everything is encrusted with swirling mosaics of tile, glass, and painted metal. This is a psychedelic castle in the air where bowling balls form flowerbed borders and fences are made out of crutches. Not surprisingly, the mastermind describes his home as a place where “more is more.” The ballroom needs some finishing touches; a rooftop garden is being planted. Luna is a labyrinth of staircases, hidden rooms, and lookout towers, all adorned with Boscarino’s visionary artwork – a hybrid of museum and thrift store. One of the outlying structures is a hut fashioned from a sea of azul. “Some are SKYY Vodka and others are Arizona Iced Tea,” he laughs. “Whenever I have an event here, I always get donations of various things I ask for. This project will be made entirely of blue glass bottles, which are the hardest to come by. I originally estimated I’d need about 1,500 bottles to complete it, but now it looks like I’ll need about 3,000. And I didn’t even drink one of them!” Another point of embellished whimsy, set amidst aging movie set props and odd junk yard finds, is a chapel that Boscarino erected as an homage to his grandfather who, notes the artisan, once witnessed a miracle in Sicily.

“That’s where the crutches come in, kind of like ‘Catholic kitsch.’” Then, there’s the forthcoming tribute to a pancake topping: hundreds of empty syrup bottles set into concrete blocks. “I’m going to have a nine-foot replica of Mrs. Butterworth that’ll be lit from within. Actually, it’s almost better describing what this will look like rather than what it might end up being,” he declares. A time-out from frivolity comes from the studio where Boscarino creates his finer pieces of jewelry and pottery, which he peddles at craft fairs across the country. Earrings and charms are three-dimensional utilitarian items – shoes, chairs, and kitchen gadgets, to name a few – made of brass and silver. With the help of assistants, he forges ornate pins, necklaces, and pendants in a variety of styles. The ceramic concepts boast unconventional shapes and glazes, and a recent series of Face Pots, loosely based on Pre-Columbian vessels, imbue Boscarino’s sense of humor. Two years ago, he formed Luna Parc Atelier, a nonprofit that brings prodigies to the site for teaching and mentoring. “I want to set an example of how an artist can make a living from his work. It’s part coaching, part giving them life skills,” explains Boscarino. Recently, he also visited public schools and worked with students, imparting variegation techniques

and helping them create permanent exhibits. Luna serves as the penultimate training ground, where apprentices make and glaze their clay tiles, fabricate the patchworks, and participate in the installations. Despite his long-range goals, Boscarino avoids an endgame for the ever-evolving estate. “My master plan is to not have a master plan, which keeps me open. It’s all about ‘layering.’ I can take something down and improve on it, or move it around and add to it. There are no mistakes, that’s the magic. Things will always change. People have this misconception of the final product. If it starts to deviate from the original idea, they get frustrated. The beauty of creating stuff is that progress is inevitable.”

Beat the Heat:
Waterpark Adventures By: Karen Bumbaugh,
Been There Done That with Kids
O
nce the dog days of summer have arrived, spending time outdoors will be much more comfortable for the kids if it includes the cooling effect of playing in the
water. Be prepared for the sultry summer days by checking out these fabulous options for water fun in Pennsylvania.
Hersheypark's Boardwalk Last year, Hersheypark added two new water attractions to its already enormous 11-acre water park section called
Dutch Springs Dutch Springs Aqua Park in Bethlehem differs from a traditional water park in many ways. Instead of the typical water slides and spray grounds, Dutch Springs offers an inflatable obstacle course on top of a spring-fed lake. While the course may appear to be easy to navigate at first glance, it can be slippery and challenging. There are rewards for completing the obstacle course though, including a leap from the Wibit tower into the cool water below.
The Boardwalk. Thrilling slides, like the world’s longest mat racer and a new water coaster filled with splashes of water and intense twists and turns, make this water park ideal for teenagers. However, there are plenty of pint-sized water activities for younger children too. In addition to a 378,000 gallon wave pool, which gradually deepens from zero to six feet, there’s a shallow kiddie pool with gentler waves and geysers. Plenty of tube slides and a multi-level water play structure round out the water park offerings. Admission to Hersheypark includes access to the water park and ZooAmerica, giving park guests three types of entertainment for one price.

Sesame Place Water slides, a wave pool, and lazy river are interlaced with dry rides throughout the park at Sesame Place. This Sesame Street themed amusement park is located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and is close to Philadelphia. To match the tinysized park clientele, the water attractions are made for little ones, including a very shallow wave pool called the “Teeny Tiny Tidal Wave.”
Dorney's Wildwater Kingdom Continuing the trend of a water park inside an amusement park is Dorney’s Wildwater Kingdom. This water park inside Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania has one of the longest elevated water slides in the world, which you can navigate in a gigantic eight-foot-wide raft with several members of your family or friends. Wildwater Kingdom has many other slides to choose from, including a mat racer, speed slides, and several tube slides. Take a break from your
Dutch Wonderland's Duke's Lagoon Another water park inside an amusement park, Duke’s Lagoon is perfect for toddlers and pre-schoolers. The lagoon is located within the gates of Dutch Wonderland, a kids’ amusement park in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The water park features plenty of opportunities for splashtastic fun, including a water-play table and small water slides. The absence of a pool and very little standing water makes Duke’s Lagoon a bit more relaxed for kids who may not be totally comfortable being submerged in water. A bonus to this water park is that it’s right inside the castle doors, making the walk back to your car with worn-out toddlers manageable after a fun day at the park.
fun-filled day by lounging in the Wildwater River or rent a cabana to relax and unwind.
Knoebels' Crystal Pool The Crystal Pool at Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, Pennsylvania is a fun tradition that dates back to when the park first opened in 1926. The pool has expanded and changed throughout the years. Unique features include slides in the middle of the pool and high dives, which are rarely seen in public pools these days. While admission to Knoebels is free, the pool does have a fee, as well as the option to pay-per-slide to use their large, traditional-style water slides. The offerings in this water park are rounded out by a kiddie area with more unique attractions, like an in-water seesaw and other kid-friendly water play structures. These are just some of the water-ful places there are to visit in Pennsylvania. Even though it’s hot, there are still plenty of

water safety tips FROM THE PROS Summer is quickly approaching, and adventure is around every corner with all the rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and pools in the Poconos! While the water is fun, it is important to remember that it can also be dangerous. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 years old and is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death for children from 5 to 19 years old. Keep your little adventurers safe with some of these water safety tips from the pros.
ASK FIRST! Teach children the habit of asking first, each and every time, before getting into any body of water. Remind them that an adult should always be watching. Reinforcing this Golden Rule will reduce the likelihood of your child entering the water without supervision. 28 • MeSee Magazine

ALWAYS SUPERVISE! Actively supervise your children around pools and natural bodies of water. Ensure they know and respect all pool rules. Stay alert and do not consume alcohol. The best way to actively watch your kids is to get in there and play with them! Make memories while staying safe and having fun!

WATER WATCHER!

If you must step away, designate one person to watch your children. Asking a group to keep an eye on the kids can lead to no one watching them. Each person can easily assume another adult is supervising, and then no one winds up watching. Asking one person directly makes he or she responsible for the task. In turn, if a fellow parent asks your group to keep an eye out for his or her kids, share this tip and take the initiative to keep them safe! It takes a village, after

high school, but even a small child can be hard to manage in the water during an emergency situation. Teach kids this catchy saying: “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go!” Look around and see what you could use to reach - a towel, a noodle, a stick, or anything that could reach the struggling swimmer and pull him or her to safety. If there isn’t anything that reaches, throw something to keep the swimmer buoyant, like a tube, a raft, or anything that floats.

When in doubt, wear a Coast Guard approved personal floatation device (PFD). Puddle jumpers are a great alternative to life vests. Be sure the PFD is the proper fit based on the child’s height and weight. Like Goldilocks, find a life vest that is not too big, not too small, but fits juuust right. Floaties are not a replacement for adult supervision. With summer coming, it’s a good idea to brush up on your First Aid and CPR skills. Enroll your children in a swim lesson program. Double check the safety of your backyard pool. Make sure you have a fully stocked First Aid kit and your lifejackets are in good condition. Review your emergency plans and these safety tips with your friends and families.
