Our Letter Parenthood. Considering how many people do it, it is amazing how different the journey can be. The one thing we have in common? No one starts out a pro and every parent has his or her struggles. Oh, and we’re all a little tired. It doesn't matter if it’s the first or fifth kid, we are all one curious quirk, play date faux pas, or facemelting, banshee tantrum on the floor of Target away from feeling like a failure. Molding tiny humans into functioning adults really makes people question their abilities and sometimes their sanity. But it’s also made up of those heart-busting, tear-welling, grin from ear-to-ear joyful moments, too. We don't have the answers to your parenting questions, but we’re here to celebrate the joys, swerves, and curves this parenting thing throws our way. Welcome to the very first issue of MeSee Magazine, written for parents by parents. Within these pages we hope you’ll find new things to try, places to go and people to meet. We’re always looking for ideas from parents like you so please, drop us a line and let us know what you think. Lastly, a very special thank you to all of our supporters, contributors, advertisers, friends and families for helping us to make our dreams of publishing this magazine come true. You guys are the best and it warms our hearts to know that you’re behind us.

Stylin’ sock bunnies
Since birth, my daughter has loved socks. Any sock will do. She carries them around with her, rubs her face with them when she’s tired, occasionally chews on them (only the clean ones) – it’s the cheapest toy I’ve ever bought. Because of her sock obsession, I decided to blow her mind by turning a sock into a bunny!
supplies from the store
Like I said before, kids always love the things you least expect them to love so I was a bit worried that my daughter wouldn’t find them as cool as I do. I had hopes of her carrying around these bunnies like her new best friends but I wasn’t certain they would replace her regular favorites.
• Knee high socks $2.50 a pair @ Target
With a few socks, some sewing materials and the help of Lil Blue Boo’s tutorial I was able to create these bunnies with ease. With a big smile of approval, my daughter now has a few new best friends to play with.
• Filler Fiber - $3.47 @ Walmart
1. Cut the foot of one of the socks right down the middle, but don’t cut all the way to the heel. The heel will become the face of the bunny and you want to leave about an inch before the face.
2. Cut the other side of the sock down the middle as shown. These will be the legs of the bunny.
3. Cut the foot off the second sock. 4. Cut the foot of the second sock down the middle. These will become the arms of the bunny.
5. Back to the first sock, hand stitch or use a machine to sew the ears shut. 6. Sew the bottom of the feet and insides of the bunny legs as shown, leaving a 2 inch hole to insert stuffing into.
7. Sew the arms shut on one side….but not the ends. Turn the arms right side out. 8. Fill the body of the bunny and the arms with stuffing. Sew shut the bottom of the bunny.
9. Carefully tuck in the raw ends of each arm and hand stitch it to the sides of the bunny.
10. Stitch buttons on for the eyes. 11. Stitch a nose.

Shopping for baby showers
or children’s birthday parties is always a challenge. It’s inevitable that the guest of honor will receive the same gift from multiple guests at least once. Which is why I always try to think outside the box.
Handmade toys not only save money and can be personalized, but they also make unique gifts. Even if the gift you’re giving is a classic item, like this Tic Tac Toss game, you can create something different with the recipient in mind.
Pocket Full of Whimsy provided the inspiration for this game and I was excited to give it a try.
1. F old your 22”x22” square into thirds and mark a long line creating 3
equal sections. Then rotate and do the same. You should now have 9 equal squares. Lay a long piece of masking tape about 1/2” away from the marker line on both sides giving you a 1” paint line.
2. P aint within the tape lines. Allow to dry and remove tape. 3. Now paint an “X” on 5 of your 6 x 6 squares and paint and “O” on another 5 of your 6 x 6 squares. Set aside and let dry.
4. Put right sides of burlap squares together (1 stenciled square and 1 plain square), stitch sides leaving one side open for turning.
5. After turning right side out fill each bag ½ way with dried lentils. 6. T uck opening in and stitch closed. Continue all the way around the bean bag to create a finished edge.

Sara Hassell slim down with sara | beachbody coach By: Amanda Kuhn Beachbody Coach and exercise guru Sara Hassell wasn’t always into fitness; however, she was always aware of her weight. Never considering herself unfit or overweight, it wasn’t until Sara got pregnant and gained well over 70 lbs. that she was confronted by the consequences of her poor diet and lack of exercise. After her first child was born, Sara was able to bring her weight back down to 160lbs. Then, after becoming pregnant with her second child, her weight increased to 240lbs. Sara’s unhealthy habits became such a health risk that she had to be induced at 36 weeks to keep herself and her unborn child safe. After the birth of her second child, she knew it was time to make some changes. And that is where Sara’s incredible fitness journey began. Like most people, Sara found herself being sucked into fitness infomercials. She would see the amazing results and think, “Wow, that could be me.” Not really knowing what P90X entailed, Sara fell for the ‘hype’ and made an impulse purchase. This time would be different, this time she would make a change. When she received P90X she started it immediately. After 2 weeks and no results, Sara became discouraged and finally gave up. Questioning whether this was the right program for her, Sara started doing some research online on other Beachbody programs. On a whim, Sara chose her second Beachbody workout – Slim in 6. Results in 6 weeks? Who wouldn’t want that!? Waking up at 6am every morning, Sara did the workouts, changed her diet and, after completing Slim in 6, saw positive results. Her dedication to fitness and love of Beachbody workouts continued to grow. What Sara likes most about Beachbody programs is that real people participate in the workout. Real people who achieved amazing results by doing the program and sticking with healthy nutrition. She also likes that most programs can be modified, from beginner skill levels to highly advanced. What are her two favorite programs? Turbofire and Les Mills Combat. Both focus on the entire body and have upbeat energy and music. You actually end up looking forward to your workouts with these two programs – who ever says that!? What helped Sara through her first Beachbody workout was her Beachbody Coach. Sara’s coach answered any of her questions about food choices, workout schedules, and even gave her encouraging words when necessary. She also helped Sara choose her second program after completing Slim in 6. A Beachbody coach, in short, is your number one fan when it comes to your fitness goals. Sara had such a great experience with her coach that she decided to become one!
20 • MeSee Magazine
As a Beachbody coach, Sara helps choose the perfect program for you, based on your workout history and future goals. She may also suggest supplemental options to help aid you on your fitness journey. Once you receive your items, she will then address any questions or concerns you may have, such as allergies to foods in the provided nutritional guide or, for the advanced, assistance creating a hybrid schedule of 2 workouts. Sara also helps with motivation, using YouTube and Facebook to inspire her students and fans. She shares her true struggles, flaws, and even admits when she falls off the workout wagon. As a busy mom, wife, and someone who started from scratch, Sara understands that there may be bumps along the road to fitness. To get to know Sara, watch her workout videos, read more about her transformation and find out how she can be your personal Beachbody coach, visit her fitness website or other social media sites…

Kate from farmhouse38
1. How do you begin your design process? Do you start with accent pieces? Pick paint colors? Draw up plans? Look for inspiration? The house, itself, has really been the driving force behind most of my design choices. Though beyond dilapidated when we acquired it, I knew immediately that it would be a farmhouse when we were finished—it just needed a little coaxing. So every room in the house has been spun obsessively off of that theme. Sometimes I start with a paint color. Sometimes I start with the wrong paint color and end up painting over it three times. Sometimes I start with a piece of furniture, and by the end of the process that piece of furniture has found its way into another room. There is no rhyme or reason beyond the fact that everything must be ‘farmy’, or at least play nicely with that aesthetic.
some capacity, whether it’s through color, materials, or furniture style, etc. But I also believe in running with whatever makes you happy; I get real twitchy when people start talking about decorating rules. Time and time again I am blown away by the creative minds in the décor industry, the brains who think outside the box and prove that every rule can be creatively broken.
4. When shopping for a room, where do you begin? Do you search online for used furniture? Visit local thrift stores?
Oh, my design process is chock full of suspenseful twists and turns. You know the saying: the best laid schemes of mice and men….well, we are full of best laid schemes. There are always unexpected bumps in the process, especially with a 100-yearold house, and you kind of just have to either incorporate the bumps (literally, sometimes; this house has very uneven subfloors that we decided not to replace), or regroup and head in a completely different direction. Secretly, I kind of, sort of love that. Some of our best décor features have evolved out of unforeseen creative necessity.
I always begin my shopping at the bottom of the price food chain. I like to get what I want for as little money as I can. Free furniture is great; hand-me-downs, curbside castoffs, family heirlooms—I get real excited about these. If they aren’t an option, the next rung up is building something myself (and super extra bonus points go to anything I can build from scrap material that I didn’t pay for). If I still haven’t found (or can’t build) what I’m looking for, I hit the thrift stores and flea markets. When all these fail me, I head to Ikea, Homegoods, and other large chain stores where the gettin’s good; I’ll take what I buy and totally make it over before it gets put to use. It is a very rare circumstance, indeed, when I go beyond these stores in price range….it’s got to be a really significant piece that is worth the wallet dent, and I probably have to lust after it for months (and then sometimes it’ll go on sale!) before I pull the trigger. When you’re dumping money by the bucket load into a home renovation, you learn really quickly how your furniture budget can magically turn into a new sewer system in the blink of an eye. You have to get a little crafty when you have no money left to decorate!
3. Do you feel that it is important for each room in a house to

”If you can be anything, be kind”
If you’re like me then it’s not unusual to feel embarrassed by the number of toys your kids own. I sometimes look at the bins overflowing with trucks, turtles, games and dinosaurs and wonder how my kids became so spoiled. Several times a year I go through their stash and pull out as many toys as possible to pass along to another home. But their stash continues to grow! Many of the toys they played with for only a month, a week or even a day. Their toys remind me just how lucky my little ones are but also make me think of all the little ones that aren’t so fortunate. If you can relate, you’ll love Cuddle + Kind, an adorable, huggable, loveable toy that provides meals to children in need. Their goal? Provide one million meals per year.

Tips
to tell. Do you have a tall, skinny spot above your fireplace for a single, iconic image of your family? Or do you have a large wall where you want to start a family gallery? Perhaps you'd like a coffee table album? Whether you want to dress up a large wall or you want a collection of images, your photographer will know which type of session will give you the images you'll be proud to display in your home. Dress for success These printed photos will be around for a long time. In 20 years, you'll want your photos to create warm feelings and happy memories of your loved ones - without the cringing and giggling over dated styles. The goal of any fine portrait is to direct the viewer's eye to the face in the portrait. So when choosing outfits, pick simple, solid colors and classic, timeless styles rather than hot trends and busy patterns. Use props and pets If you have an accessory that helps express your family's unique personality, add it. If your preschooler won't go anywhere without his superhero cape, let him wear it. Shared hobbies and interests can go in here too. If you're a family of readers, having everyone pose with their favorite book can add a personal touch. And, of course, including your family pet is a great way to show the special bond you have with your dog or cat and capture the spirit and beauty of your furry pal forever. Relax and go with the flow Part of having your portraits If you're like most people, images of your family are probably languishing on your smartphone or tucked away in the closet on an old computer. If you take a break from the selfies and invest in the time to hire a professional photographer, you'll end up with beautiful family portraits that capture and preserve the love, affection and expressions that are unique to your family. Teachers Who

Inspire By: Jamie Bowman
stopped to reflect on this statement and racked my brain for a person who truly embodies a “great teacher,” one name instantly came to mind, Mrs. Gail Lund. For some, 10 years seems like a lifetime ago. For me, 8th grade Spanish class feels like yesterday. I still remember every word to “Cielito Lindo” and how to conjugate a long list of irregular verbs. No, I don’t just have a good memory; I had a great teacher. Gail may be entering into her 23rd year of teaching for the Pocono Mountain School District, but she never fails to breathe new life into the art of teaching. Ask any current, former, or even future student and he or she is sure to agree – Mrs. Lund is the best! Spanish with Mrs. Lund is one class that is NEVER boring. Mrs. Lund teaches each and every lesson with a smile on her face and a little extra zest!
Teachers. They’re more than just the smiling faces that spend 180 days a year with your children. And contrary to
the popular belief of the average kindergartener, they don’t live at school. They’re coaches and mothers. They’re fathers and role models. They may have summers “off” but their jobs certainly don’t end when the final bell rings. Whether you were a “straight A” student or lived for recess, we all had at least one special teacher who made a lasting impact on our lives. It’s time that these exceptional people receive a little recognition. American author William Arthur Ward noted, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” When I 34 • MeSee Magazine
From a young age, Gail knew she wanted to be a teacher and fell in love with the Spanish language early on in life. Her passion for both education and Spanish certainly shows. I asked Gail to choose her favorite aspect of teaching, a difficult question for any teacher. It was no surprise that she most enjoys bonding with and acting as a role model for her students, as well as teaching them something useful to apply to their lives. While Gail does plenty of this in the classroom, she continues to do so during summer break as a group leader with EF Tours. A lifelong traveler, Gail found a way to combine her “two loves” – teaching and travel – by establishing an annual Cinco de Mayo field trip to San Antonio, Texas for her Spanish students. The district eventually put a stop to

to have opportunities to experience new places and their cultures. I was fortunate enough to travel to three locations in Mexico with Mrs. Lund and members of my Spanish class in the summer of 2003. For the first time ever, I was immersed in a language and culture totally different from my own. Mrs. Lund not only made sure the trip was educational but fun, too! Over the years, Gail has taken 32 trips with EF Tours, not to mention her countless travels with family, which includes her husband, Doug; son, Tyler; daughter, Cassie; daughterin-law, Gen; and now, two twin grandsons. Her list of visited destinations is long and spans over six continents. No, she hasn’t been to Antarctica…yet! From The Pope in Rome to wild dingos in Australia, Gail has seen it all. The only thing more impressive than Gail’s international adventures is her gratefulness for all of her wonderful life experiences. After providing me with a list of each and every country she has

Be sure to ‘Like’ her Facebook page at www.facebook.com/LundTravel for the latest information on future trips and to see some amazing photos! Teacher, role model, world traveler, bi-linguist, mother, grandmother – Gail Lund does it all. More importantly, she does it with spunk, humor, and love. We are certainly lucky to have Gail as a resident and teacher here in “MeSee Magazine.” Congratulations on 20+ years of teaching, Gail, and here’s to many more!

I am so lucky!” Though her trips with EF Tours first appealed mostly to her students and their parents, Gail’s trips now attract everyone from former students to adults traveling without their children. Gail’s student tour group, EF Education First, allows for international travel on a budget – a winning combination! Due to popular demand, Gail now hosts 3-4 trips per summer, which she categorizes as: Spanish-speaking
