compete.”

McKinney, a three-year starter, threw for almost 400 yards with seven touchdowns and just two interceptions. The dual-threat QB added another 708 yards and six scores with his legs as part of a rushing unit that amassed 3,289 yards and 42 touchdowns.

A multi-sport standout athlete, McKinney will once again by the man with the ball in his hand to lead the offense.

Hisler, a senior, recorded 1,032 yards with seven touchdowns, averaging over nine yards per carry. He was also effective out of the backfield as a receiver, catching eight passes for 108 yards with another score.

Cherry, a junior, racked up a team-best 19 touchdowns with 936 yards rushing, averaging almost seven yards per carry. He also caught a 32-yard TD pass.

Connor Hanson, a senior and three-year starter, added another 377 yards with eight rushing scores.

“I would say a strength of our team is our backfield,” Howard said. “We have those four guys returning and they were part of an offense that put up over 3,000 yards. We have good depth at the skill positions and good team speed.

“And while our line is young, they are bigger than in 2020 or 2021.”

Max Kumm — a 260-pound senior — Brandon Lahr, Josh Stansfield, Dylan Burnette-Bingham and Brady Jessen will be among those working to replace five graduated offensive linemen from a year ago.

Newcomers like Sam Youngdale and freshman Cole Nohrenberg and Beau Nohrenberg are also key pieces to rebuilding the line. Youngdale checks in a 290 pounds, Cole Nohrenberg is 250, and Beau Nohrenberg 235.

Cherry led the defense last year with 61 tackles, while Keegan Hisler and McKinney each had 38. Hisler also had a 11.5 tackles for loss and a team-high six sacks.

Webster City forced 13 turnovers, as CJ Hisler picked off three passes and Austin Mason had two interceptions.

Special teams will be strong once again, with both CJ Hisler and McKinney returning. Hisler averaged almost 37 yards per kickoff return, including two scores, with McKinney averaging 13 yards per punt return.

“We have strong senior leadership and experience,” Howard said.

Howard is in his 16th season as head coach of Webster City. He took over the program following a 27-year run at Sigourney-Keota, and has gone 109-57 with the Lynx and is the owner of 358 career wins.

Webster City reached the state championship game in 2016 under Howard, and the program is an impressive 58-16 since 2015.

This fall, the Lynx will host Boone, Mason City, Spencer, Storm Lake and DenisonSchleswig. The Spencer, Storm Lake and Denison-Schleswig games are the final three weeks of the year.

Road games for Webster City will see them travel to Humboldt, Waverly-Shell Rock, Fort Dodge and LeMars.

The Lynx went a perfect 5-0 to win the district last year over Spencer, Fort Dodge, LeMars, Denison-Schleswig and Storm Lake.
