Angelina’s: All about the service By Jonah Comstock

I

t’s no surprise that the likes of Tom Cruise, Danny DeVito and Mayor Michael Bloomberg make sure to stop by Angelina’s Restaurant on Staten Island. At an establishment dedicated to treating everyone who walks through the door like a celebrity, real celebrities must feel right at home. “It’s all about the ser vice,” said Vincent “Vinny” Malerba, co-owner of Angelina’s with his mother, Angelina. “Ever y waiter knowing ever y dish on the menu, how it’s prepared, and can even make it tableside.” The restaurant provides reading glasses for customers who forget theirs, and matches their napkin – dark or light – to their out fit. “The servers work for a month before getting their own table,” Malerba said It isn’t only the ser vice that contributes to the worldclass experience, that brings regulars

from as far as Brooklyn. Angelina’s features live entertainment every night – male and female lounge-style singers who croon “ever ything from Italian to Celine Dion,” Malerba says. And if the music’s not your thing, the restaurant boasts four private par ty rooms, as well as outdoor seating, which of fers a spectacular view of the Ar thur Kill and New Jersey. “It’s like you’re eating on Lake Como, cause all you see is the calm water and the lights across the bay,” Malerba said. Of course, none of that would matter if the food weren’t good. Chef Marco Zuccala hails from Italy, and his fare habitually gets good reviews – landing the first-ever 4½-Star rating from Staten Island’s AWE Magazine. Maler ba and his mot her are hands-on owners, in the restaurant six days a week, which Malerba insist s is t he only way to maintain qualit y ser vice. Whatever they’re doing, it’s working. Malerba says the recession

has barely affected their business (“Knock on wood,” he said), which has grown steadily since they moved to their current location three years ago. Now they are considering opening a catering hall next door. Malerba says the work keeps them busy. “That old saying, ‘Be careful what you dream of’? It’s so successful, all we do is work.” Malerba tries not to let that success go to his head. “Our main focus is staying humble. Once you get too pretentious, its all down hill from there,” he says. Instead, he focuses on making every meal an experience for customers who are looking to wind down af ter a long day at work. “No mat ter how bad a day you’re having, you gotta make sure they’re smiling and having a good time,” Malerba said. “They want to leave their life behind and have a good time for a few hours.”

S w i t ze r la nd i s one of the world’s most advanced a nd prosperous nat ions. Per capita income is among the highest in the world, as are wages. Switzerland has liberal investment and trade policies, with the exception of agriculture, and a conser vative fiscal policy. The Swiss legal system is highly developed; commercial law is well defined; and solid laws and policies protect investments. The Swiss franc is one of the world’s soundest currencies, and the countr y is known for its high st andard of banking and financial ser vices.

Economic Outlook The Swiss economy shrank by an estimated 1.5% in 2009, as a result of the global economic slowdown. Never theless, Swit zerland led the rankings of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Repor t 2009-2010, reflecting the countr y’s sound institutional environment, excellent infrastructure, ef ficient markets, competent macroeconomic management, world-class educ at iona l at t a inment, a nd high levels of technologic al innovat ion, which boost Switzerland’s competitiveness in the global economy. or Olympia Colandrea, hair styling is an art. It’s all about keeping up with the current trends and never getting complacent. She sees the business of running her salon, the Salon Da Noi and Day Spa in Bay Ridge, the same way. “I’m a l w ay s loo k ing to do s omet hing dif ferent,” she said. “I like to update myself, my clients, my business.”

Keeping Current For Colandrea, that means keeping her staff of 38 up-to-date with workshops and training and traveling to Italy and to New York fashion shows to learn about new trends. For Salon

But the new space has allowed the business to incorporate a color bar, where clients can have their hair colored with custom-mixed dies while enjoying wine, coffee and free wi-fi. The building also contains t wo gardens in addition to the upstairs salon and the downstairs soundproofed spa area.

A little bit of paradise “T he spa is like a dist ant oasis,” s aid Colandrea. “We encourage clients to come

15 minutes early just to sit and close their mind af ter they go in before they star t their treatment.”

A little bit more Colandrea says the trick to keeping a luxury business like a spa afloat in a recession is to “give a lit tle bit more.” For instance, Salon Da Noi specializes in bridal par ties. With a bridal party of six or more, Colandrea offers a complimentary mimosa breakfast the morning of the wedding. With the new space, Salon Da Noi can accommodate wedding, birthday, and sweet 16 par ties of 15 or more people. Even for the weekly and monthly regulars, there are plenty of extra perks – wine and espresso, the gardens, and, most importantly, an educated staf f up on all the latest trends in hair style and color. “Clients always trust me to give them the latest trend,” Colandrea said. “I’m teaching my staff to do the same thing.” And she stands by her team. “ I d o n’ t j u s t h a v e h a i r dres sers, I have great hair designers and I really consider them ar tists,” she said.

orn in Bosnia, Saudin Robovic knows what he’s talking about when he says chess is an international language. “In 1996, I c a me here to the United States af ter the war finished in my countr y,” he said. “I landed in Times Square. The next morning I went to the Manhat tan Chess Club to look for jobs.” Chess was Robovic’s ticket out of Bosnia, giving him the oppor t uni t y to t ravel a round E u r o p e, a n d e v e n t u a l l y t o A m e r i c a, a n d h a v e f r i e n d s waiting – in the form of the chess community – anywhere he went. But at the same time, he says chess in the United States is very different from in other countries. In European countries, Robovic says, “you have all these chess masters. The ar tist s are bolstered by the government. So once the governments get unstable, there is no chess.” Here it’s dif ferent. “In the United States, people are looking at chess the right way,” he said. “It’s very difficult to market. So people here made it so it is useful for education. Whatever you become in life, you become something impor tant for society.” T hat ’s why when Robovic moved f rom Bosnia to Manhat tan, he transitioned from chess master to chess teacher, founding NY Chess Kids, a children’s chess school where 30 teachers help over 1,000 kids ages 4-14 learn chess each week. The school works through summer camps, after-school programs at schools throughout the city, beginner-to-

22

advanced tournaments, and public and online lectures. They meet kids where they are, whether new to the game or serious players. With tournaments, one-day camps and online lectures open to anyone, Robovic encourages parents in the city to get their kids involved in chess. “Ches s is somet hing t hat makes t hem, happy, just like music,” he said. “It really develops a child’s mind. It forces them to think, they have to think, there’s no other way.” At one school, he s a id, t he pr incipa l noticed that the kids in the chess program were consistently outscoring their peers on tests – so she introduced chess to the whole school. Robovic waves away notions that chess kids suffer in other areas besides academics. “Chess kids are ver y good in spor ts,” he

said. “They play a lot of spor ts. But they’re also into intellectual activities. They like to study and learn.” Robovic has come to see the children’s education as paramount. “When I came here, I understood that there are so many other more important things than chess. I really opened my eyes in New York City,” he said. “Once I understood, that was the time when I stopped playing chess and began making my company.” A nd jus t like i t did for Robov ic a s a young man, chess is giving his students the oppor tunity to travel. “This year we had five children that qualified for a world championship in Brazil,” he said proudly. “They represent the countr y in this tournament.”

Chess Camps The NYChessKids Chess Camp has been held for many years — first at the Manhattan Chess Club, then at our location at the Episcopal Church. A year ago we started to organize our Chess Camp at PS 116 school which offers a perfect environment for studying chess. Most of our students come from New York City, but we do attract students from other areas and have occasionally had students visit from other countries for a few days! The goal of the camp is to foster an environment of learning and fun, so that students are happy before and after the day. During breaks, students can watch movies, play video games, or play more chess. For very motivated students, the breaks are a tremendous opportunity for gaining specialized instruction from a teacher. While the format of each camp day is the same, the content and form of the lessons varies day-to-day. There is always a warm-up session and the “tournament-style” session, but the other sessions can take different forms, for example: Puzzle solving (various forms of tactics, endgames, studies, etc.), lesson with multimedia projector, lesson with demonstration board, analysis session.

Hey Mom, that’s not true! Met Livings favorite tales we tell our kids Stop cracking your knuckles...it will give you arthritis!” For some odd reason, young boys love cracking their knuckles. Whether it’s the sound of the crack or the feeling it makes, we feel relieved when one cracks a knuckle. After getting all that finger stress out, Mom smacked you upside the head, reminding you of the extreme arthritis you’d get because of all that cracking. A study of 300 people who had bad habits of cracking their knuckles. Did not find any evidence that doing so leads to arthritis . Some of these individuals did lose strength in their hands and also had soft tissue damage. The “cracking” noise you hear when you crack a knuckle is merely a release of nitrogen gas that is constantly building up in your fingers. Arthritis is usually a symptom that you feel later in life and is usually inherited from your parents.

prove your eyesight enough to see in the dark.” The white lies that mom threw at us were to make sure we stayed safe. Now carrots, on the other hand, were something that she encouraged us to eat - because, eating them would make our eyesight better. Already we had come to terms with going blind from sitting too close to the TV, so if there was a way to reverse its affects by eating carrots, then we were all over it. The reality of carrot intake actually improving our eyesight to the levels of being able to see in the dark are ridiculous. The myth probably started when one mother found out that Vitamin A is one needed to maintain healthy eyesight, with carrots of coarse being rich in the vitamin. Of course, no amount of carrots could be eaten to actually improve our vision.

“ I t ’s c o l d o u t s i d e — i f you don’t bundle up you’re going to get sick!”

“ Wa i t a n h o u r a f t e r e a t i n g t o get in the swimming pool, or you’ll get a cramp and die!”

This old wives tale is a rather obvious one to debunk once some simple understanding of how common colds work in the first place. Colds are the result of a simple virus that we get from breathing in from the air. People stay inside more during winter, with all the doors and windows shut. This makes for a drop in fresh air circulation, creating more opportunities for you to breathe in those pesky cold viruses. “Eating your carrots will im-

Splashing around in the pool was all day affair. Once the hot dogs and hamburgers were gone, it was back to the pool for any unfinished water business. Then mom warned that if we jumped in the water too soon, it might be our last time. All of a sudden that pool of refreshing water turned into a pool of fire. During digestion of food, more blood is sent to help in the process, with less left around to tend to our muscles. It is possible to get a cramp if you’re using those muscles more

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

“If you keep making that face, it might freeze and stay that way forever!” One if the earliest forms of making fun of your classmates was using your facial expressions. Flashing a tongue, crossing our eyes, pushing our nose up - all of these things either made some unsuspecting friend cry to mommy. That is, until mom caught on and let us know that those crazy faces could end up becoming permanent. Mom completely lied when she told you that your face could freeze just because you were sticking your tongue out at others. Usually a child with complications or loss of control of facial muscles has these symptoms from conditions they are born with, sadly. Other diseases, such as Parkinson and Huntington’s disease can affect these muscles, but are not developed until later in life. “ Wa t c h i n g TV too close will hurt your eyes and make you go blind!”

When was the last time you saw an adult who was happy that it was cold and snowing outside? The upside of cold weather included snowball fights, Christmas, and missing days from school. The downside? Catching a cold, supposedly. Mom always had us put on multiple layers of clothing. Was mom just being too over protective of her freezing young ones or just a little crazy?

26

than your body can handle. Drowning because of cramp is just another of mother’s exaggerations.

The first things you did after school involved plopping your little butt down in front of the TV and catching some cartoons. G.I.Joe, Transformers, & My Little Pony- all of these wonderful programs kept us at bay for hours. We kept our eyes glued to the action - all at the risk of going blind, something mom loved to point out. If you were watching the television your Grandma had as a child, then maybe it could happen. Very early television sets did emit a form of radiation, which causes all kinds of problems .Other than that extreme case, there’s really nothing wrong with sitting closer to the tv then if you were farther away. It can put a strain on your eyes, but the notion of going blind is simply untrue.

Bowling: Its in The blood By Jonah Comstock

L

ou Seda grew up in a bowling alley. Not literally, of course. But his father was a major bowler, and little Lou felt at home at Oscar’s Lanes in East Islip, Long Island. “I practically lived in the bowling center when I was a lit tle kid,” Seda said. But as he grew up and bec ame first a high school, then a professional bowler (he’s bowled 12 per fect games), the lanes he saw weren’t quite right. “The bowling business in general has gotten away from the family enter tainment type of a place,” he said. “They’ve become more corporate.”

Fulfilment of a dream So when Seda, 51, finally fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening his own bowling center, Strike 10 Lanes in Mill Basin, he wanted it to be for families. Not that there isn’t a place for senior leagues, corporate events and professional bowlers at Strike 10, which Seda acquired a year and a half ago. But Seda feels strongly a bowling alley should be a gif t to the community. And not just as a place to go. Strike 10 hosts fundraisers for charities like Breast Cancer Awareness and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, has a scholarship league, and hosts St. Francis College’s bowling team. “You should always look to give back,” he said. Walking into the 34-lane center, the words “st ate of the ar t” spring to mind. Newly refinished lanes and ball collectors are flanked by new flat-screen TVs displaying the newest in computer scoring. New flooring and furniture adorn the bar and arcade area, and the bar is undergoing a similar renovation – as well as

36

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

the addition of a pool table and, soon, karaoke. A full-ser vice pro shop greets customers at the door, run by our pro-shop staff. It’s hard for regular customers to believe it’s the same building they knew as Gil Hodges Lanes t wo years ago. “The place was resurrected, so to speak,” Seda said.

A new era Seda is planning to hold a grand re-opening, but business is already booming. “Bowling centers have pretty much survived t h e e c o n o m i c c r u n c h,” s a i d C a t h e r i n e McWilliams, marketing director at Strike 10. “When you compare the cost to movies, a show in the cit y, dinner out – as a family

outing it’s still af fordable and a lot of fun.” Seda agrees, noting that bowling in general seems to be making a comeback. “People are staying close to home and spending their dollars on local things.” Seda put in the arcade and made a significant investment to bring air conditioning to the large building. He’s started events like weekly specials and glow bowling on the weekends. Within the next year, he’s planning to add private party rooms to the business. And the location af fords convenient parking, with a huge lot that can accommodate family cars and school buses. It’s all towards the end of being a place where adults, kids and families can have fun. “It’s a ver y family-oriented thing,” he said. “I’d love to see the place full of kids.”

Not Only Kids Have “Back to School Blues”

E

very August, anticipation of the new school year has children dealing with anxieties. Who’ll be in my new class? What if don’t like my teacher? As responsible parents, we always seem to find ways to ease our children into things like the first day of school, a new grade or maybe a new school altogether. But what about our family pets? How do they cope with back to school anxieties? No, I am not referring to doggie day care, kitty classes or birdie camp. I am referring to our pets’ dependency on our

increased attention over the summer months. Somehow, amidst all of our families’ changes and preparation for the new school year, we may overlook our pets.

What about me? Many people do not realize that our pets often suffer from attention withdrawal heading into the end of Summer. Pets can act up the same way a child might when not receiving his or her way or not get ting the at tention they desire. Although Summer is only one fourth of the calendar year, the additional time we spend around our pets tends to be a catalyst for negative behavioral pat terns in our pets heading into the Fall. Many of these are easily remedied.

What prompts such bad behavior? How many of us have come home to chewed shoes, scratched furniture or a mess to clean? Ever wonder how and why our pets could be so destructive when we leave them alone? We hear the stories a hundred times, and some people chalk it up a s a bad or improper ly trained pet. This is usually not the case. Awareness can assist in making the transition from the lazy days of summer back to the hustle & bustle of school days pleasant for every member of your family, including the four legged and feathered family members! Weaning a pet of f the at tention given during the summer months is not hard to do. It simply takes some preparation and planning s imila r to be ginning to s hop for school clothes, books and changing our bed time schedules.

Signs of “the blues” •E xcessive barking, howling or meowing when lef t alone. •Chewing of furniture or household items other than pet toys. •Scratching furniture or at the door. •Digging in yard. •E x treme hair loss. •Feather plucking. •Diminished eating or drinking. Note: These symptoms may be the sign of a more serious problem, if they persist please contact a veterinarian. With school well under way, you should have stared the acclimation process by now. Below are some helpful tips.

Tips: Make a point to allow your pet more alone t ime. Ta ke bre a k s f rom t he inter ac t ion Oc c a siona ll y le ave your pet in t he hou s e instead of having them join you in all ac t i v i t ie s. Slowly decrease pet ting and handling. S o m et h in g a s s imp l e a s a c h a n g e in the morning greeting could cause adverse ef fect s. A lt hough it may seem mean, t r y passing your pet in the morning with nothing more than a subtle greeting. Tr y this when you go to and from your home, as well. Tr y rewarding your pet with a treat upon leaving the house. There are products that are designed to keep pets occupied when lef t alone. Your loc al pet store is a per fect place for guidance. You can visit Brooklyn Zoo & Aquarium or Email us at Thezoo714@aol for more tips or advice. Weaning a pet of continuous at tention is a gradual process. There is nothing harsh about taking the steps above. You will be rewarded with a well-adjusted, anxiet y free pet. Remember not to punish or harshly reprimand your pet for any improper behavioral change. T ime and pat ience is essential.

7 Labrador Retriever The Lab, as it is af fectionately called, is the most popular breed chosen by families. Another member of the working class of dogs, the Lab is best known for its intelligence, affection, patience, and gentility, making them perfect companions for households with kids. They are easily trained, and, in fact, are one of the top dogs chosen for search and rescue, a s sist ing t he dis abled, and police wor k. They are also known to self-train, obser ving behaviors in humans and repeating them—a great asset in emergency situations.

6 Shetland Sheepdog Another herding dog, the Shetland takes this ability into the home, showing the same commitment and protectiveness over its human “herd” as the farm raised version does. Highly intelligent, the Sheltie handles life with great

Because of their past as war and police dogs, they may appear fearsome, but they are actually quite gentle. Their loyalt y and acuit y make Doberman’s great additions to the family.

Third Street. Owner Francesco Sciortino, who was born in Dyker Heights but raised in the Sicilian capital, said that the name, which means “love and kisses” in Italian, perfectly describes the atmosphere he’s tr ying to create. “When you think of something happy and festive you think of love and kisses,” said Scior tino. “It’s about savoring the moment.” Speaking of savoring the moment, Amori e Baci has a wide variet y of savor y foods and desser ts, from panini ($7) to sweet crepes ($4-$11) to gelato ($2.99-$6). The crepes haven’t been “baptized” yet, but combinations include salmon and baby s pin ac h; b ac o n, e gg a nd c he e s e; f re s h mozzarella and tomatoes; and, on the sweet side, Nutella with bananas. The gelato is made at the café by Giovanni

Each week features a new “ou t of t he box” f lavor, w it h pa st concoctions including olive oil and popcorn. For the traditionalists, there’s still ha zelnut, chocolate and Nutella. In line w i t h i t s name, A mor i e B aci is adorned with photographs of famous Hollywood kisses — think Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Its bright, warm colors also help it stand out on the corner, which used to be home to a parking lot. “The colors are what brought me in here,” said Gravesend resident Danny Zaretski, who’s already a regular. “It looks like someone took a café from Italy and just dropped it right here on Avenue X.” ADVERTISEMENT Amori e Baci [273 Avenue X at W. Exercise as a way of life

Y

ou have probably read about the longterm benefits of exercise: increased energy, disease reduction, longevity, weight management and improved quality of life. Most of us are well aware that proper exercise is a vital and critical part of looking, feeling and staying younger and healthier. If you want to improve your life in every way, the best place to star t is with a program of exercise. Our bodies need regular exercise; it is our natural state to be energetic and lively and actiive. When we don’t include it in our lives, we cannot function properly and we do not feel as good as we should. Exercise will make us saner, happier and healthier.

How is your exercise attitude? A lot of us wonder exactly how we can mot ivate ourselves to exercise, just what is this special thing that is needed to get your self ou t of bed or ou t t he door a nd st raight to your workout s 2-3 times each week? The reason that no one can answer this question is because it is dif ferent for all of us. But one thing that is known is that part of what determines whether you get to your exercise session or not is your at titude. How you view your planned workout has a major influence on the impor tance and priorit y of it in your life.

Enjoy yourself Making exercise enjoyable begins in your mind – If you have a positive at titude and can find ways to make your exercise program enjoyable, you will be much more likely to stick with it. It is easy to find motivation to do something you enjoy rather than making excuses why you shouldn’t do it. Exercise will never seem like a chore if you are passionate about it. If your attitude is not so good about this are you willing to change it? Let your exercise help you to meet your

44

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

other needs in life. It can help satisf y your desires for social interaction, self discipline, rela xation, self-discover y, or just give you a break from the stresses of the day. Think a bou t your non phy sic a l ne e ds t h at a re impor tant in your life (like stimulating your mind), and tr y to figure out how activit y can help you to achieve them. This can make your exercise program a much more powerful and posit ve experience and keep you going back for more.

First and foremost Your s t reng t h a nd f i t ne s s re a ll y ne e ds to be in t he “f ir s t t hings f ir s t ” c ate gor y, be c au s e ever y t hing els e in your li fe re s t s upon your good he a l t h. T ime for exercis e is always available when you put first t hings f ir s t in your li fe. W het her you like to exercise or not isn’t really an option, it is a choice. And that choice that is dependent on you. N obod y c a n do t his for you – no exercis e progr a m or t r a iner, no diet pla n, no pill or supplement. It c ome s f rom deep wit hin you – it is in all of us. You just need to re ac h in a nd f ind i t. If you have you forgotten how good it is for your energy levels and sense of well-being or have never stuck with an exercise program long enough to experience it, you will soon have more energy, a bet ter at titude and a gentler disposition. It is easier to be the kind of person you have always wanted to be. Your strength and fitness are essential to your ongoing good health, like eating right, sleeping enough; your family, friends and working. E xercise needs to be at the top of your list of priorities and be put first when you understand and accept just how it impor tant it is to the qualtiy of your life. It is so much easier when you don’t have to force yourself to exercise, when you actually want to do it, need to do it, have to do it. Over a period of time, lit tle by lit tle – health and fitness can become your pas sion and t hen you k now you are there.

Supplementation & Your Diet By Wayne McLean Cer tified Health & Nutrition Coach e all are aware that taking certain vitamins is a good idea, but what we see on pharmacy and food store shelves often leaves us wondering what to buy, when to use it and, most importantly, asking the question “Is all this really doing me any good?”

grade vitamins’. When choosing a product as impor tant as this, you must ask yourself, ‘If it costs this amount and they spend millions of dollars to market it, how good can it be?’ There next step up is a class of vitamins that are made from pharmaceutical grade ingredients. In this case, you do get what you pay for, but these high quality ingredients are restricted by how they are delivered into your system. They come in the form of a pill.

Why pills are inefficient

Diet and Disease

While vitamins help, they are not meant to replace a healthy diet. What they do is enhance or supplement what we eat. While a good diet is a star t in preventing disease, even so-called healthy foods are deficient in many of the nutrients we require to combat ailments such as cancer, ar thritis, osteoporosis, diabetes and ot her serious conditions. All of these diseases have been linked with nutritional deficiencies. One of the Most nutrition experts advocate eating well What holds a pill together? Sudoku: Exercise for the brain If you enjoy logic puzzles, give it a try!

A

fun hobby that exercises your brain and gives you a sense of accomplishment — that’s the perfect description of the numbers puzzle craze from Japan called sudoku. This great brain game is fun to play, and anyone can do it. Playing can even help delay dementia by teaching your brain to think in a whole new way.

How to Play You’ve probably seen a sudoku in your local newspaper. It’s a puzzle that exercises your brain by get ting you to think logically about how to place numbers in boxes within a grid. The point of sudoku is not to repeat any numbers while you’re filling in the grid. The challenge is figuring out which number fits into which box. The sudoku grid has nine boxes; within each box are smaller boxes that have nine squares each. Some of those squares will already have numbers in them. Here are brief rules on how you play: • Fill in each square with one digit, using only the numbers one through nine • Numbers cannot repeat within an individual box of nine squares • Numbers cannot repeat down a column • Numbers cannot repeat across a row

Its not really a numbers game Sudoku is a ver y friendly kind of puzzle. You don’t have to come to it with any sort of knowledge beforehand — it’s not like a crossword where you have to know trivia. A nd t hough it ’s ea sy to be int imidated by all of those boxes of numbers, sudoku has nothing to do with math. The numbers represent a pat tern that could be any thing — colors, shapes, let ters, or other images. It’s not actually about math. It’s all about

54

nine elements that represent dif ferent things that you fit into par ticular spots.

the right combination of numbers, the brain game gets pret t y dif ficult.

Strategy and Difficulty

Why You Should Play

T here are t wo ways to visualize t hings in sudoku and make progress. You can look at what’s there and what’s not there. By figuring out what numbers you have and what numbers you need, you can start to plug them in and fill out the grid. Scan across, scan up and down — numbers elsewhere in the grid can eliminate where numbers can be someplace else. Sudoku games c an range from easy to dif ficult, but their format doesn’t change. The dif ference is in the way that you solve t he puz zle. T here is a hierarchy of steps that you take to solve the puzzle, and those steps are what determine how dif ficult it is. The more possibilities you have to get to the winning combination, the easier the puzzle. But if there are only a few ways to get to

A bra in ga me like sudoku, a s well a s crossword puzzles, taking classes, reading, and writing, can help delay dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and protect the brain from decline. Any time you stretch your brain a nd t r y somet hing new, e specially using dif ferent par ts of your brain and thinking in a dif ferent way, you’re helping to sharpen your mind and keep it that way. It offers good exercise and stimulation for the brain, and can actually be ver y rela xing. People also get a real sense of satisfaction from having figured out the puzzles. It’s testing something you’ve probably not used any time in your life. It may turn out that you enjoy it and may turn out that you don’t,, but you’ll be stimulating your brain in a new way.
