Variety is the Spice of Life

W

hen seasoned Staten Island jeweler, Jerry Amerosi, decided to take the plunge and be the first jeweler in New York City to open a Pandora store, he knew he had a customer following that was ripe for this type of cutting-edge product, a great location in the Staten Island Mall, and a unique and exquisite jewelry product that is endearing for many because of its personalization feature. Top that with it being affordable and he knew it would be a success. What he didn’t expect, however, was that his sales at his original jewelry store in the mall, Gerald Peters Goldmine, would triple! “Pandora products speak for themselves. Their fine craf tsmanship, t he individualit y of each piece, and t he company’s commitment to providing a sharp product for every income level, made this new venture for me an easy decision. Adding a new store, however, was risky for an economic time such as this, but what I learned is that adding more variety to your inventor y complements your overall business; it does not take away from your original product line,” commented Jerr y Amerosi, owner of Pandora on Staten Island and Gerald Peters Goldmine Jewelers, both located in the Staten Island Mall. Since the opening of Pandora, Jerry and his staff have been able to meet their customers’ needs bet ter by having the oppor tunity now to refer them to either store (Pandora or Goldmine) to fulfill their purchasing needs. Recent new s relea sed f rom Homeland Securit y prompts Jerr y Amerosi, a jeweler with decades of experience in the business and owner of and the first Pandora store in New York City (both stores are located in the Staten Island Mall), to remind his customers

and neighbors that buying counterfeit jewelry, “knock-of fs”, just doesn’t pay of f. It doesn’t pay of f to the buyer of it and most cer tainly to t he reput able busines s owners in our community selling the “real deal”. “The perpetuation of knock-of fs is driven by the belief that you are getting a good deal. Although prices may be cheaper with knockoffs, the trade-off in quality, usefulness, and lifespan of what you purchase, is diminished. And, in this bad economy, it directly hurts the financial well-being of the “mom and pop” stores here in our communit y - our neighbors, “c ommente d Jer r y Amerosi. Not Just Skin Deep

T

he skin is the largest organ of the body and yet most of us don’t do enough to maintain our skin’s health. Americans spend millions on body products every month, but are they buying the right ones? How much do you really know about what your skin needs, what type of skin you have, what kind of soaps and lotions are the best for your skin? What about those products that promise younger-looking, wrinkle-free skin, do they work?

The Purpose of Skin

One of your skins functions is to eliminate a portion of the body’s waste products through sweating. If toxins escape through the skin they disrupt the skin’s health integrit y. This is one of the key factors behind many skin dis orde r s inc luding ac ne. T he s k in a ls o “breathes”. If the pores become clogged, the microbes that are involved in causing acne flourish. Great looking skin is a wonder ful thing to have because it’s right there on your face, it’s kind of hard to hide. The skin also protects our bodies from the outside world. Most of us don’t think our skin is so great looking. Even if you were born with a perfect complexion, or one that is not so good, you should make an ef for t to take care of it correctly. When you are going through adolescence your body is tr ying to adjust to changes in the hormone balance, and this af fects your skin big time.

Skin Types

There are three basic skin types, but you may find yours isn’t exactly like any of those described here. Most skin is a mixture of these types and yours will be no exception. The basic skin types are dry, oily, and combination. Dark skins have a tendency towards greater extremes of dryness and oiliness than paler skins.

Oily Skin

You can tell if your skin is oily because it

10

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

usually has a shine to it. It may be prone to black heads and acne. Oily skin contains a lot of sebum which helps prevent the skin from dr ying out. However, oily skin tends to at tract more dir t and dust than dr y skin. It benefits from soap and water, so washing with a cleansing bar is an ideal way of caring for it. Use warm water to loosen the dir t, then use cold water to rinse. Use toners and astringents containing alcohol and always use a light, non-greasy liquid cleanser. Ver y oily skin needs no extra moisturizing at all while you are in your teens.

Dry skin

Dr y skin looks dr y, sometimes flakes, and often feels tight, especially if you have washed it with soap and water. Sometimes it is lacking some of the protective sebum and so it reacts to very hot and very cold weather by tightening up. One benefit of dr y skin is that it is less likely to develop acne than oily skin, but it is easily chapped in a dr y atmosphere. Always use mild, alcohol-free make up and toner, and a rich, creamy cleanser. Moisturize your face ever y day, including the throat and the skin around your eyes. When you wear makeup, use a moisturized foundation. You will need little or no powder. When you wash your face, use a liquid or a cleansing bar. Use warm water to lather and rinse it with cold.

Combination Skin

Most of us have this kind of skin, with an oily center area or a T-zone across the forehead, nose, and chin, and areas of dr yness on the cheeks, and around the eyes and neck. Ideally, you should have one product for the oily areas and one for the dry areas, but this is expensive and unnecessary unless the areas of dry and oily are ver y dif ferent. It’s simpler to use a cleanser designed for combination skin. Use a skin cleanser for the central oily panel, diluted with water for the drier areas. The drier areas may or may not need moisturizing frequently. You may have to experiment a bit.

Healthy Living Begins at Tea Time

T

he excellent health advantages of green tea are not limited to weight loss. It is the natural compounds in green tea, titled catechins, that provide a plenitude of other health benefits. Grown men who administer themselves high doses of polyphenols like catechin have 75 percent less probability of having a stroke. Green tea reduces the amount of bad LDL cholesterol and raises good HDL cholesterol count. This brings for th a more beneficial b a la nc e bet we en LDL a nd HDL pla sma levels. Additionally there is confirmation that polyphenol catechins can help thin the blood and lessen blood pressure.

DNA defenders

Protection from cancer is associated with green tea dr ink ing, too. Scient ist s have shown that damage to our DNA is one known determinant of cancer. Our DNA strands come under at t ack from t housands of unst able oxygen molecules everyday. This is a normal thing for DNA. The amazing news is that our cells is able to repair itself. Still, our DNA can cave in to this assailant and the DNA strings will become permanently damaged. Damaged DNA will produce a mutant code and star t creating cancerous cells! It is then great for us that the antioxidants of green tea can head off and subdue free radicals. This helps reduce our possibility of falling victim to cancer! Vast amounts of research has also concluded that green tea reduces the risk of prostate cancer, lung cancer, bowel cancer, skin cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer and bladder cancer! Green tea polyphenols elevate our count of white blood cells. A high white blood cell count is essential to a power ful immune system.

There are two different white blood cells that polyphenols can strengthen — B-cells and T-cells. B-cells construct antibodies that defeat foreign objects and infectious microorganisms. T-cells engage particular invading organisms such as viruses and malignant cells.

A clean start

For the purpose of detoxification the liver is our biggest weapon. It sponges up foreign chemicals from our blood and with the help of

metabolic agents, chemically alters poisons into iner t soluble materials. T he harmf ul substances can then be excreted to the feces for elimination. With the levels of pollution in our environment and in our food in this age the liver experiences vast levels stress! On the up-side catechins come to our aid! These the compounds in green tea really do protect the liver from a number of these harmful substances by aiding the enzymes specific to detoxification. In this process the liver is spared somewhat.

Australia: The Land Down-Under

A

ustralia, although an island, is also a continent, some 4,500 kilometres (2,700 miles) across and about the same distance from North to South when you include Tasmania. You should keep these distances in mind when thinking about driving in Australia. We strongly suggest that in most cases you fly bet ween major areas (unless you prefer to travel by rail and take more time) and then hub out from major centres to explore features and environments. By covering the following three areas, you will come to grips with the essential variety of Australia and will widen the experience as you include other areas. If you have only 15 – 21 days then you can do the three areas without undue hurr y, We hope this quick tour gives you some food for thought.

Area 1 Sydney, Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and North New South Wales Coast – Allow 3 to 5 Days

Sydney is a great cit y in which to spend a few days coming to grips with the urban A u s t r a li a n a n d i s ju s t l y f a mo u s fo r i t s spectacular harbour. The city is truly a great place to explore and there is a lot to do. The historical center of the city is the area around Circular Quay, with the Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge on the other. The Historic Rocks district is beside the Quay and under t he shadow of the Bridge itself...you should always consider st aying near t his area where possible. The transport systems are all excellent and you can access all areas of t h e c i t y u s i n g t h e s e. Alternatively, take tours or day trips to selected areas to widen the experience. If you really want to drive bet ween t wo major Australian cities, our suggestion is

to do it Nor th from Sydney, following the coast to Brisbane. Another alternative is to head south to Melbourne, via Canberra and the wine country. Be aware that either drive is 10 hours non-stop and that you should allow at least 3 days to do it at a leisurely pace.

Area 2

Tasmania – Allow 5 to 6 Days

If you are going to explore the Southeast area of Australia and want to get into the countryside, then Tasmania is the place to do it. This island State of fers extremely diverse scener y and the oppor tunit y to get among real Australians and see how they actually live. Do your cit y experiences in the major centres such as Sydney or Melbourne, but get into the countr yside in Tasmania. This is one of the best places in Australia in which to self drive and explore on your own and t here are many excellent, small accommodations from which to choose. If you do not want to drive, you can take day trips to the dif ferent areas and features. We highly recommend flying into Hobar t as you enter Tasmania and flying out of Launceston as you leave.

Area 3

Melbourne, The Yarra Valley, Great Ocean Road and Ballarat – Allow 3 to 4 Days

Much of the countryside around Melbourne The Sydney

is ver y similar to Tasmania in nature, so we suggest that you concentrate on the areas of real difference, the city itself, the Great Ocean Road, Ballarat and the Yarra Valley wine areas. Melbourne is a great city in which to walk and has wonderful shopping areas downtown. It is a very European city in nature and has excellent public transport (its Tram – streetcar – system must rank as one of the best in the world) and its cosmopolitan background is reflected in the many ethnic restaurants and at tractions in the city. It is Australia’s third oldest capit al cit y (having been set tled from Launceston in Tasmania) and is a very easy city to get around using the public transport. An absolute must if you are into unusual restaurants is the Tramcar Restaurant, a streetcar that ser ves excellent food and wines while cruising around the city streets. Bookings are essential.

Other Areas

• Cairns, Daintree Rainforest, Kuranda and Por t Douglas • The Great Barrier Reef and Island Accommodations • Ayers Rock, Alice Springs and The Red Centre • Adelaide, The Barossa Valley, Coober Pedy and Kangaroo Island • Dar win, Kakadu, Litchfield Park and The Tiwi Islands • Brisbane, Sur fers Paradise, The Gold Coast and Lamington National Park Opera House • Per th, Monkey Mia and Margaret River • Canberra and The Snowy Mountains We hope this Q u i c kTo u r h a s g i v e n you s ome ide a a s to what you might expect in approaching your Australian trip. Great Food Equals Happy Residents Dinning in Assisted Living and Retirement Communities

M

eal times are bar none the most important activity of the day for seniors living in retirement and assisted living communities. Eating is an immensely enjoyable activity when you’re young (as evidenced by our 60% overweight population) and for the elderly, and is often the only enjoyable activity of the day. And while fattening home cooked dishes will always be on menus - just watch the uprising if they took away chicken fried steak from anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line - communities should still be striving for quality and freshness.

making abilit y of these folks, even if they come in at the same time. Every. Single. Day.

Choices, choices, and more choices.

Knowledgeable Food & Beverage Director.

Our seniors spent their whole lives deciding when and what they wanted to eat. Isn’t it only fair that they get to do that now? While many communities have limited meal times - and this is not necessarily bad, it’s certainly better to have an all day dining program in place. When is the last time someone told you that lunch was served at 11AM sharp? Our seniors aren’t children and they’re paying a lot of coin to live in these places. Communities should at tempt to be as flexible as possible in their scheduling to be respect ful of the decision-

26

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

Social Circles.

It’s just as impor tant to be able to chose where to sit. Senior communities can be like high school with folks moving in and out of social circles. Wouldn’t you get sick of sitting next to the same person ever y day? What if you didn’t like them? Assigned seating should be reser ved only for residents with ver y high care needs who need extra at tention.

All the better if the chef is a nutritionist (and in some states it’s the law). Even if no need exists now, he or she should be able to tell you what they can and can not do in the event diets change for health reasons. Diabetes, chewing problems and diver ticulitis, among many others - are fairly common ailments among an aging population and something to think about when considering a move.

Quality and Quantity.

Look to see how extensive the menu is.

Resident s should be given at least t hree options at every meal, one hearty, one healthy, and one light. Even home style dishes should be made with fresh ingredients and a minimum of salt, and served with fruits and vegetables that will be pleasing to any palate.

Cleanliness and atmosphere.

Keeping the kitchen and dining room clean are incredibly impor tant to help prevent the spread of illness within a more frail population prone to picking up ever y little bug. Check food safety inspections and be sure to walk all the way into the dining room (and in the kitchen if they allow it) to make sure staff looks clean and crisp, salt and pepper shakers free of any visible debris, table surfaces sanitized, and glasses and silver ware spotless.

Try the food.

While ever y community claims to have the best around, make sure you ask to tr y it for yourself. Your taste buds don’t lie and it will give you a much bet ter idea of what is really like there as a whole. www.seniorsbestinterests.com

The Making of the Best Steak Restaurants

I

n the culinary challenge of preparing the best steak ever, all the steak restaurants in New York take pains to provide their valued clients and most loyal customers the ultimate steak experience. This is, in spite of everything, the bloodline of all steak establishments in every state. So, for the avid steak lovers in New York, we ask, “What are the makings of the best steak restaurant?”

Price

We do not pay for these pricey over the top establishments for nothing? We expect only the best! So focusing on the phrase best steak ever, when broken down, will yield to 4 major components. First and foremost, is the meat grade. If you could notice, ever y decent steak rest aurant New York should have the phrase USDA Prime Aged Beef. To elaborate fur ther in this factor, The USDA’s grading system is the most reliable tool in determining the quality of your beef. Quality in turn would equate with Marbling, the fat ty streaks throughout the muscle fibers of your beef. And remember, the thickness of the cut is more important than the weight of the beef. 1 to 1 1/2 inch should be the appropriate thickness. Thin slices are more likely to dr y out when cooked.

Temperature

The second impor tant factor is Temperature. This is where many of the steak restaurants in New York commit their mistake. Temperature has a lot to do with your beef even before it hits the grill. Explanation: if the beef is colder than your average room temperat ure, most likely t he fibers will contract the moment it hits a hot sur face, causing the meat to harden. So whenever you go to a new steak restaurant for a business lunch, make sure that the chef knows exactly what he is doing. Remember to go out of your way to compliment the chef for a job well done. He or she will appreciate your appreciation.

Preparation

The third component is method of cooking. Being a steak fanatic, you already have your preference when it comes to how you would like this sinful piece of meat prepared. With the advent of booming steak restaurants in New York catering on both rowdy parties and the more private fine-dining experience, these establishments also create their large following by the method of cooking they’re famous

for. Either it be Pan-seared, sear-roasted, barbecued or grilled, would depend mainly on the specific taste of the customer.

Entourage

And lastly, I am referring to the complimentary elements that would make your steak dinner the ultimate antidote for your beef-oriented appetite. If New York fine-dining is your thing, and you will probably expect it to be ver y costly, the steak restaurant of your choice should provide an array of appetizers, carefully prepared side dishes to match the richness of your entrée and a wide selection of wines to complete altogether a truly unforgettable meal.

Bracing For The Future Kids teasing your child about her teeth can not only hur t her feelings, but can af fect her for the rest of her life. Some teasing can just be kids being kids, but if you notice that there actually are problems with your child’s growing teeth and jaw, it’s time to see an orthodontist. There is a window of oppor tunit y during a child’s growth when the correction of the jaw size and position is possible with simple or t hodontic appliances. If t his window is missed, treatment later will need to focus on camouflaging the problem rather than correcting it, which can include the removal of teeth, or, in severe cases, jaw surger y.

At what age should your child see an orthodontist?

Many or thodontists believe that it is more cost ef fective to limit or thodontic treatment to a few years of braces af ter all permanent teeth are present. If there is not enough space, extraction of 2 to 4 teeth are per formed for proper toot h alignment. A ll t reat ment is therefore completed in one phase. Others argue that if jaw problems — such as a narrow upper jaw or a short lower jaw — are caught early on, early treatment can ensure no teeth will have to be removed, permanent teeth will come-in well aligned, and the jaw can develop properly. To get a good sense of your child’s bite problems grab a pencil and take a closer look at your child’s smile.

Barkless wonder seeks human with strict lease. Of all small dogs, I’m the quietest. To be honest, it’s not because I’m well-behaved but because I cannot bark at all! I do “yodel” now and then or even chortle, but I’m no yapper. I am a high-energy, playful fellow, though, so if you’re not into fun and games, well, look for more of a “lap” dog! P.S. I’m one of the oldest breeds in the world, developed as a hunting dog in central Africa thousands of years ago. Confession: Leave me alone too much, or bore me, and I may bore t hrough your furniture!

Italian Greyhound

If you can pronounce my name (hint: bee-shone free-zay), I already have a thing for you! What I love most is love, and if you’ve been called “good with children” or “not a barbarian,” I think we can make it! Compared with other toy breeds, I’m probably the easiest going and best behaved. If you promise to take good care of my puffed silk coat, I’ll come over tomorrow in time for brunch!

Sleek, fastidious, and fast asleep, I’ll be at your feet as you read high-quality books by your warm fire or at least high-end home enter t ainment center. Though bred down (“down” in st ature only!) from t he racing greyhound millennia ago, in Egypt, I’ve always been a home (and palace!) companion, never a jock or hunter or working stif f dog. So compared with other small canines, I’m much more quiet and refined! As Moses used to say when he dwelled in the land of the Pharaoh, “This dog, he’s not a noodge!” Confession: Because I’m so sleek and my coat so shor t, I will freeze my tush of f in places like Nor th D-d-d-da-kota.

Yo quiero su amor just as much as I want that taco! And not just because your lap is warm and my coat so sparse (though I do have long haired cousins). Unlike lots of other little guys, I need you to cuddle me more than I need you to play games with me. It’s just my nature. And if you must occasionally leave me alone, I’ll be better behaved than lots of other dogs I could mention! People with rambunctious children or cold drafty houses need not apply, thank you very much! Dog of many moods seeks human with similar attributes. As my wrinkled face and prominent eyes suggest, I c an be ver y serious and sedate, especially for a small breed. But the next minute, I’ll be in a par ty mood, hoping you’ll join in the frolic! Kids in the house? No problem! I’ll share their moods too! Hard-to-find, easy-to-love. European refugee interested in meeting American friends. We’ve been in the U.S. less than 30 years, but we bark fluently in English! (If I look a bit familiar, it’s because you’ve seen me in famous oil paintings by Goya.) In France, where I’m from, I’m known as the Lit tle Lion Dog because of my formal haircut. A dif ferent kind of lap dog, I’m eager to run laps around your home, backyard, or sprawling county estate. Yes, I am the real turbo-dog, developed to hunt foxes by Vicar Jack Russell in Devon, England. But when I’m not chasing chipmunks or Frisbees, I enjoy nothing better than cuddling up on the sofa with you to watch TV (especially Frasier!). By the way, good old Parson Jack spent 60 years per fecting my breed, and if I must say, his prayers were answered! Confession: I’m a perfect example of the dictum, “A good dog is a tired dog.”

If you do, you’ll get a super-lively, loyal pal-who doesn’t shed! Confession: Being so energetic and smar t, I need enter tainment, learning challenges, and all that good interaction stuff. Finding the right Music Teacher

I

f you are inclined to music and you want to learn it, then you would surely know the importance of having a good teacher. Most people spend a considerable time wondering how do I find a good music teacher. A good teacher can kindle the passion that you have for music and mold you to be a good musician. Many factors have to be considered seriously before you look out for a good music teacher. Whether you are looking for vocal lessons or instrumental lessons, it is never easy to find a good teacher.

Is she any Good?

The challenge that you may face very often is that as this is an unregulated field, you will find many music teachers who are immensely talented but who are very good with music. If you are thinking about how do I find a good music teacher, then it is essential for you to make inquires and find out through your acquaintances. You should rely on experiences that other people have had and make your decision based on their experiences. The next important thing is to actually listen to the music teacher per forming. Find out about any per formances and tr y to at tend them. This will help you gauge the level of involvement that the music teacher has with the music. If you were already at the intermediate level of music, then you would be able to see if the music teacher fits with your concept of music and if you will be able to learn what you wanted.

Musical tastes

Before selecting anyone, you should also ensure that the idea of music and his or her notion of music match with yours. This is necessary to avoid any clashes in the future. This will also enhance the process of learning because you will be able to bet ter relate the teacher. If you and your teacher have the same concept and notion related to music, then you will see that the classes would be much more enjoyable and you will be able to learn quite a lot apart from the regular lessons. Try to judge the vibes that the teacher gives out during an interaction time and see if you can relate to

it and respond to it. A good rappor t with the music teacher also is impor tant. Find out if the logistical factors also suit your convenience, this includes the timings as well as the cost of the lessons. Many people think that these factors can be adjusted later but it is necessary that such factors be sorted out at the earliest. If you are a beginner, a

good teacher is essential to give you the correct foundation in music and if you are an advanced learner, then it becomes even more necessar y to find a good teacher. We hope that this ar ticle has helped you understand how to find a good music teacher and has lef t you less confused when you think about how do I find a good music teacher.

But yl and Polysulfide are the most commonly used primar y sealants. Look for ones that use secondar y sealants because they serve multiple important functions, chief among them is aiding in structural strength.

our wine cellar door is the first part of your wine cellar that people see when they come to visit so make sure your custom wine cellar door fares well in two departments: Style and Substance. The use of Insulated Glass should help you cover both. Because it is glass, it’s appealing to the eye and at the same time helps keep your wine cellar door insulated and condensation free. I’ll ex pl a in t h e b e n ef i t s of u s in g insulated glass on your custom wine cellar doors by discussing its dif ferent elements. Basically, insulated glass is a multi-paned glass structure that is sealed around the edges and purposely has thin spaces in bet ween. This space is what gives Insulated Glass its insulating and anti-condensation characteristics. In this ar ticle, I hope you find all the answers you need and learn a few helpful tips in building your custom wine cellar door.

Spacer

The spacer is what’s used to separate t he glas s panes. One t hing I notice about some manufacturers is their use of metallic spacers. Metals undermine the ability of insulated glass to reduce heat transfer because metals are good conductors of heat. Opt for ones that use non-metallic materials such as structural foam or fiberglass.

Desiccants

Glass Panes

Desiccants remove trapped moisture w it hin t he ga s-f illed space t hrough absorption. One common example of a desiccant is silica gel.

We nor ma ll y s e e tempere d gla s s used as insulated glass because it’s 5 to 10 times stronger than regular glass. Tempered glass is made by superheating regular glass until its softening point then it is cooled rapidly. One thing I like about tempered glass is it disintegrates into small blunt fragments instead of pointed shards when it’s accidentally shat tered. You won’t really need any kind of coating, like Low-E, because wine cellar doors are usually indoors, away from sunlight. So keep it simple… and tempered.

Advantages

In sulate d G la s s not onl y a id s in insulation but it also helps in absorbing vibrations from external forces. Chemical processes in wine causes sediments to form and set tle, allowing the wine to age beautifully. Vibrations stir up the sediments inside the bot tle and alter the development of the wine. Another advantage of multi-paned, insulated glas s is you c an also use stained glasses on your wine cellar door. Some manufacturers use that space in bet ween for additional decors and with var ying materials.

Filling

The most popular way of filling the space is to use gas but not just any gas. They’re called thermal performance g a s s e s b e c a u s e of t h e i r l o w h e a t conduct ivit y rates. T hey are usually Argon, Kr ypton and Xenon, with Argon being t he most commonly used bec ause of its af fordabilit y. These gasses are safe, non-tox ic a nd c hemic a ll y ine r t. Ide a ll y, creating a vacuum would have been excellent for insulation but it’s nearly impossible to

44

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

Disadvantages

create a perfect vacuum. So I say go for gas, particularly Argon, because it is effective and the cheapest.

Sealants

Sealants have ver y low moist air

A big setback for insulated glass is its lack of repairability. If those seals break, c ondens at ion c a n for m inside t he gla s s resulting in fogging. You can defog the glass but ultimately, you’ll have to replace the whole glass once this happens.

Diamonds for Dummies

A

re you looking for a diamond engagement ring and don’t know where to start? What is all this talk about 4 or 5 c’s, certifications, RAP, appraisal price vs. actual price and more? Well stay tuned because I am going to give you a rundown of what to look for and what to ask.

4 C’S, or Do We Plead the 5th?

The 4c’s of diamonds are Cut (Shape), Color (Color), Clarit y (Inclusions), Carat (Weight) and the 5th is Cost ($$$). I will explain briefly so you will understand and I won’t torture you with boring details.

Cut

What is the shape of the stone? Round is most common with Princess (aka Square) not too far behind. Cushion and Emerald have become popular because of the celebs. So that’s the easy one right? She can tell you the shape and you are good. Nope. It is impor tant to see how a diamond is cut because if it is not cut propor tionally, than the light will do into the stone and never come back out. The diamond will look dull and that’s not what you want. You can find the Cut, Symmetr y and Polish on a cer tification. Make sure they are all “Good” or bet ter.

Color

Color is easy to figure out, but sometimes tough to see. Colorless diamonds that are more valuable. The diamond color scale starts from D (colorless) and goes all the way to Z+ (fancy yellow). For white diamonds, tr y to stick from D (the best) to I (faint yellow) color. I color is not bad. The faint yellow is tough to see under normal light. Once you get into the J to K range, a light yellow may be noticeable. K and below aren’t too bad if you buy a yellow gold set ting. You will see it more in a white gold or platinum set ting.

Clarity

Just like ever y person is not per fect, neither are most diamonds. And there is no need to be. Imper fections in a diamond make it yours. They are like a person’s birthmarks. BUT… just like too many birthmarks can be bad, so can too many inclusion as they will prevent light from going through the stone. Light bounces in and doesn’t come out. And, even more of a problem is that the diamond can get worse like a windshield. The more impact can cause more cracks and may even dull the stone completely af ter time. You don’t want that. Stay with a stone that is SI3 or bet ter. Some I1’s are OK but you have to look at the diamond with a loop to get the real picture of it.

Carat

Carat is the weight of the stone. Size mat ters but not in this case. It’s all about the next C to find a happy medium. We have had customers come in and not know what size looks like what. “I want a 2ct.” Af ter they leave happy with a beautiful 1.50ct, they are ver y happy. See this char t to see how they measure up against what you really think.

Cost

The crucial C. Everyone thinks that have to spend 10’s of thousands of dollars on a ring. Well, I am going to tell you that’s not the case. Ever yone has a budget. Each jeweler should be able to work with your budget to make you happy. Some jewelers will work with you and in the end, you walk out unhappy. Engagement rings are the star t of a long term relationship for us, we want you to walk away happy and proud. And we want ever yone else to see that rock and want to choose us. We make our customers look good cause when you look good, we look good.

Certification

What is a cer tification? A cer tification assures that you are get ting what you paid for. It is an analysis from an independent company that looks at the diamond at 60x magnification to make sure the 4c’s are documented correctly. A cer tificate and an appraisal are much dif ferent. An appraisal is done by the jeweler so don’t confuse the t wo. The most popular cer tification is GIA but others like EGL USA and IGI are close to being as good. EGL Israel does not accurately document the 4 C’s and have been known to not be as accurate. Check out this cer tificate to see how it looks.

Conclusion

Now you know the basics about buying a diamond. I tried to make it dummy proof and simple so I hope it worked. People have writ ten books and there are courses that are years long so don’t worry knowing too much. Know what questions to ask and ask me if you have any questions (my email is cor y@casalejewelr y.com) or just come by. Knowing a jeweler you can trust is 3/4 of the bat tle; the other 1/4 is finding out what she wants and get ting it right. Check out our website link to see what ring suits her. We tried to cover all styles with details on each. Good luck. This article was contributed by Cory N. Correct Care for Hair

P

roperly caring for your hair can result in healthier looking & shinier hair. Simple changes, like soft bristle brushes, never brushing your hair while it is wet and avoiding hot appliances, in regimen can have dramatic results. Not everyone is born with beautiful hair but by learning a few hair care facts, you can make your hair look its best. Healthy, attractive hair should shine. Whether your hair is long or shor t, light or dark, it should look smooth, silky and shiny. Hair that is dull, dry, brittle or frizzy is unhealthy and unattractive. Everyday events such as shampooing, brushing and blow drying can do great damage to your hair, causing the dr y, brit tle, frizzy appearance.

Washing

When you shampoo your hair, you should use a shampoo for your specific type of hair. If you have permed or color treated hair, you should use a shampoo for chemically treated hair. Many people believe that baby shampoo is ver y gentle and safe to use on their hair. This is a big misconception. Baby shampoo is actually quite harsh: its main purpose is to remove cradle cap from an infant’s scalp. Leave the baby shampoo for your baby. If you are not sure what your hair type is or what type of shampoo to use, ask your hairdresser. Your hairdresser can recommend a specific shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair healthy and shiny.

Brushing

Brushing your hair can actually help improve the shine. Brushing evenly distributes the oils from the scalp throughout the hair shaf t. If you have long hair that tends to tangle on the ends, you should star t brushing on the ends to remove any tangles, and work your way up to the scalp. You should never brush wet hair When hair is wet is it much weaker than when it is dr y. Wet hair will break ver y easily if it is not combed very gently. If you have long hair, you should squeeze the excess water from your hair with a towel. Never rub your hair bet ween the towel to dr y it, this can cause severe breakage. Before combing, a leave-in conditioner should be sprayed on the hair to

56

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

help restore shine and help remove tangles. Using a wide tooth comb, comb hair from the ends and work your way up.

Drying

Blow dryers are very convenient and many of us use them daily. If they are used incorrectly, they can cause severe heat damage to your hair. Blow dr ying can cause your ends to be dr y, brit tle and frizzy. You should allow your hair to air dr y until it is about half way dr y. Set your blow dr yer on low or medium heat, and keep the blow dr yer about six to eight inches away from your hair. Using a blow dr yer set on high heat is ver y damaging. If you notice stray hairs that are shorter than the

rest, that tend to look frizzy or out of place; those are the ef fects of breakage caused by harsh brushing and treatment of wet hair and blow dr ying. If you follow these healthy hair practices, you should notice an improvement in the condition of your hair within two to four weeks, depending on how damaged your hair is. While you are working to improve the condition of your hair, there are several hair care products on the market that help improve the shine and decrease the frizziness. Many of the products work remarkably well. See your hairdresser or visit your local beauty supply store for more information on available products.

Mind, BODY and Soul

B

odily fitness is being able to deal with and handle the daily stresses of life, good physical and mental health, especially when maintained by proper diet, exercise, and habits. Nutrition refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do. Our ability to provide the body with all the necessary food, vitamins, and minerals so that we continue to thrive in our daily life processes is a part of overall fitness. Fitness refers to the condition of good physical, mental, and spiritual health.

What is fitness?

Fitness of the body occurs when all the body processes, physical and ment al are functioning as the peak levels What does it take to achieve complete body fitness? It requires more than simply taking a trip to the gym, or a walk in the park. Many factors come into play when we consider our body’s fitness. The daily intake of food, vitamins, and water are absolute necessities, and most often the items thought about. What about the conditioning of our body to deal with life each day? Does our physical exercise have anything to do with the fitness of our body? Absolutely. For one condition without regard to the other, is not a complete whole. The body includes all of our physical processes, our mind, and our physical being as a whole. When we give thought to the fitness of the body, most often we contemplate our physical condition as it applies to our cardiovascular needs and our weight. But our bodies are much more than hear t and a nice

58

M e t r o p o l i ta n L i v i n g

figure. What about all of our other organs? Are they fit? How do we maintain a fitness of the entirety? Daily physical exercise that benefits the body as a whole, taking time to rest and restore what has been depleted from our body over the course of the day, and making sure that we adequately supply our entire body with the nutrition necessar y for healthy function.

Educate yourself

If we use our resources wisely and educate our selves about the things our body needs to maintain fitness, over the course of our life, it isn’t a difficult thing to attain. But you cannot abuse your body for years, and then hope for immediate results in tr ying to at tain overall fitness. It didn’t become unfit overnight, and it won’t become fit again that quickly. Proper at tention to the physical needs of each par t of your body results in the fitness of the whole. Every part of your physical body exists to work in unison with another par t of the body. Two hands are necessary for optimal functioning of the limbs, t wo feet, t wo eyes, etc. The physical body is designed to work bet ter than any machine invented to date. It is more complex and powerful than any piece of equipment we have on the market. It takes more abuse than believable, and continues to operate, even without the daily requirements being met, for several days. It is a fascinating machine, as machines go. But it is an even more fascinating subject, when we choose to care for our bodies as the temples they really are. They house our mind and soul, and when the body is fit, it does its job tremendously well.

Theater

T

he 2011 season is marching on for the Harbor Lights Theater Company(HLTC) as it begins its preparations to bring The Music Man to the stage, complete with a variety of exceptional local talent plus Patti Mariano who was in the original production of The Music Man on Broadway with Robert Preston at the young of age 11. She will be gracing HLTC with her presence as Mrs. Paroo in this summer’s upcoming production. The Music Man, by Meredith Willson, will be produced from July 8 -17, 2011 on the grounds of the beautiful Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island. Founded in 2010, the Harbor Lights Theater Company’s mission is to illuminate the human ex p e r ie n c e t h ro u g h t h e hig h e s t q u a li t y theatrical productions and ar ts education. In the last year alone, HLTC has brought over 35 Broadway artists to perform on its stages making Broadway affordable and accessible to the people of Staten Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn and lower Manhat t an. Founders Tama ra Jenk ins, Jay Montgomer y, Bet h Gittleman and Peter Poliakine are pouring their

lives, and years of experience and connections into creating a jewel of a theater company. Ms. Jenkins is an actress, writer, producer and organizer of special event s, and has appeared as ‘Velma’ in the First National Broadway Tour of Chicago, originated the role of ‘Cosette’ in Les Miserables, appeared as four felines in Cats, and covered the role of ‘Eliza’ in the Richard Chamberlain revival of My Fair Lady. Off- Broadway she appeared in the recent revival of Jaques Brel Is Alive and Well at The Zipper Theater. On television, she has appeared in the recurring role of ‘Dr. Emor y’ on Guiding Light, as a guest star on Conviction, and on A&E’s Curse of the Hope Diamond with Leonard Nimoy (actually wearing the Hope Diamond).

Jay Montgomery made his Broadway debut as ‘Whizzer’ in the Tony Award-winning musical Falsettos, opposite Mandy Patinkin and Randy Graf f. Mr. Montgomer y has t wice toured the country with Heart Strings, the landmark AIDS benefit, which raised millions for local AIDS charities all over America. The original cast was writ ten, directed, and choreographed by Bick Gos s, a nd feat ured Chr istopher Reeve, Sandy Duncan, and Tommy Tune. The reprise production was writ ten, directed and choreographed by David H. Bell, and added Oscar winner Lou Gosset t, Jr. and the late Nell Car ter as guest stars. Twent y eight local actors, dancers and children from throughout the borough were selected by director Ray Roderick for this production. “I was very excited to see so many interesting and talented performers of all ages turn out for our Music Man auditions in Staten Island. And did we mention, we also have a National Baton Twirling Champion performing as well?” Roderick says. “We are bringing our nation’s finest to work with our community’s best” commented Tamara Jenkins and Jay Montgomer y.
