Welcome to the 2021-22 Fall/Winter edition of The Giving Guide & Event Book. Things are still changing in our world and in our community as we continue to navigate through times of uncertainty. As many of you know, one of our main focuses here at metroMAGAZINE/ALH Publications, Inc., is shining a light on the Omaha metro nonprofit community and the volunteers, staff and donors who help them contribute to those in need: families, children, the elderly, the homeless, animals, wildlife—you name it. These organizations do so much for so many. As we continue to celebrate our 30th anniversary we are even more committed to supporting, featuring and celebrating our local nonprofits and heroes. Over the past 30 years, metroMAGAZINE has covered literally thousands of charity events, reporting on millions of dollars raised and recognizing hundreds of individuals and businesses who make a difference in our community. It has been an honor and a privilege to be the media source uniquely serving in this role, and we will continue to be. As I have said before, our commitment is only strengthened by the ongoing dynamics associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Once again we are honored to pay tribute to the many fine philanthropic and cultural organizations included in the following pages, along with their staff, volunteers and leadership. As I continue to have the opportunity to engage with these difference-makers I am always inspired by their passion and devotion. The charity sector’s love for our community and our people casts an influence throughout the region. We wholeheartedly share this passion and devotion and are dedicated to supporting their efforts 365/24/7. There are so many of us who—like these role models—share this desire to give back to a community that means so much to us. I truly believe that most of us want to contribute, to be engaged, to help those in need and to make a difference. Richard P. Wenninghoff Scholarships In its inaugural granting year through the Southwest Iowa Educational Foundation (SWIEF), the Richard P. Wenninghoff Fund awarded seven Treynor High School and seven Underwood High School seniors scholarships valued up to $14,000 each.

Giving Tuesday In honor of Giving Tuesday, PCCF is offering a 20% match again this year throughout the month of November for all donations made to endowment funds. This is our fourth year of celebrating philanthropy and amplifying impact with an increase to our normal 10% match program.

Record Year for PCCF Impact Grants In our largest grant funding cycle to date, our Community Impact Grants committee elected to award 40 Community Impact Grants totaling $60,040 to area nonprofit or city organizations throughout Pottawattamie County. These grants support projects and services across Pottawattamie County and represent over $8 million of project costs reported by our nonprofit partners.

Florence M. and Charles E. Lakin Center for Community Giving We are excited to finally move into the newly renovated and expanded Florence M. and Charles E. Lakin Center for Community Giving. Visit this new space at our grand opening in 2022! To learn more about the exciting and innovative charitable giving programs that are creating impact in southwest Iowa, visit us at OurPCCF.org. Our generous community leads the work we do to create lasting, positive change, and we are excited for the future of our southwest Iowa region. .

Inaugural Impact for Women Summit The Inaugural Impact for Women submit was held in October and featured keynote speaker Elizabeth Smart. Over 250 in-person and virtual attendees participated to learn more about the important issues facing women and their families in southwest Iowa. The Women's Fund of Southwest Iowa, an initiative of Pottawattamie County Community Foundation, also awarded $57,250 in funding to six organizations during its latest, and largest, grant cycle. Donor Impact So far in 2021, our donors have generously recommended nearly $1.8 million in grants that are supporting nonprofit organizations across our region, state, nation, and the world.

HOUSANDS OF GIVERS THROUGHOUT the Omaha metro have bookmarked SHAREomaha.org as their home for connecting with 600-plus nonprofits. These do-gooders are continually volunteering, donating, attending events and supporting local organizations that connect their passion to action. The organization’s mission is to help nonprofits fulfill their missions through raising more support and service among the giving public. SHARE Omaha champions “everyday philanthropy.” Its website makes it easy to respond to that cause or burning community need resonating with you, your family or your business. SHARE Omaha’s vision is for the metro area to feel empowered and equipped every day to make a difference.

year SHARE Omaha organized a local response to Giving Tuesday's global day of giving, our community raised $1.69 million and that figure was almost doubled on December 1, 2020 with $3.16 million raised. The first ever Do Good Week in April 2021, powered by SHARE Omaha, engaged over 25,000 people raising $2.56 million and 1,874 items valued at $48,000 as well as 912 new volunteer applicants. SHARE Omaha looks forward to bringing the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro Do Good Days 2022 from May 10-12. These three days will focus on cash donations on Tuesday, wish lists on Wednesday, and volunteerism on Thursday — meeting the varied needs of nonprofits and providing the options new and existing donors desire.

In just three years, local givers have proved what's possible when opportunities to give time, talent and treasure are centralized and engagement is easy. Since January 2019, over 240,000 unique visitors have explored nonprofit profiles and needs for over 17,400 hours. Over 12,000 individual donations have been made to local nonprofits and over 7,000 volunteer applications submitted. The first

INCE 1895, Aksarben has been synonymous with philanthropy, community and giving back. Created by a network of influential state leaders, Aksarben’s mission was to address the biggest issues facing the state of Nebraska. The Aksarben Foundation has evolved over time, as have the needs of the state. Today, Aksarben upholds many of the initiatives on which it has focused decades of leadership addressing:

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Donations Donations may be made to the Aksarben Foundation and directed toward the program of your choice, or to be used in support of any Aksarben Foundation work. Specific legacy programs include scholarships to two-year or four-year colleges and universities or Aksarben Community Grants. Donations may also be directed toward Aksarben’s Workforce Development initiatives, or to honoring and celebrating Heartland families for their volunteerism.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Aksarben Ambassadors Aksarben is always looking to expand our network of Aksarben Ambassadors. Aksarben Ambassadors are volunteers throughout the state of Nebraska and western Iowa who help champion the mission of the Aksarben Foundation by informing their neighborhoods and communities of the initiatives of Aksarben. Aksarben Ambassadors regularly communicate with the Aksarben Foundation to report on community projects in need of assistance, community members deserving of recognition, and to help coordinate meet-and-greet events between the Foundation and their communities throughout the year.

Supporting Heartland communities through the funding of grants helping to address the specific needs of each city and town Recognizing and celebrating volunteerism, philanthropy and community at the annual Aksarben Ball Honoring the hard work and dedication of Nebraska farmers through Aksarben’s Pioneer and Heritage Farm Family Awards Honoring who we’ve been, celebrating who we are, and supporting where we’re going are all important aspects of the Aksarben mission. In 2018, Aksarben announced an important pivot in its work across the state, which really brings all of its important work together. What Nebraska needs more than anything today is a developed and strengthened workforce. Aksarben is dedicated to supporting and nurturing workforce development and talent retention across the state, and intends to continue using its scholarship programs, community grants and recognition—in combination with its focused efforts on workforce—to accomplish this monumental task.

ITH AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE and a reputation for artistic quality, American Midwest Ballet (AMB) plays a key role in the cultural vitality of our region, inspiring people through our expressive performing artists, acclaimed choreographers, skilled teachers, and stunning productions.

AMB’s talented professional dancers hail from around the nation and abroad. The company performs at the Orpheum Theater, Hoff Family Arts and Culture Center, and on tour throughout the country. SSISTANCE LEAGUE OF OMAHA is an all-volunteer organization serving Omaha since 1974. The organization returns 100 percent of proceeds, after expenses, to the community through its philanthropic programs. It received the 2020 Top-Rated Award by Great Nonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations. Assistance League of Omaha has also achieved Platinum level in GuideStar and Best Practices status from The Nonprofit Association of the Midwest.

SIGNATURE PROGRAMS INCLUDE: Operation School Bell® Each year over 4,000 children from the greater Omaha area are given the opportunity to shop and select new school clothing at JCPenney, and also receive a book. Operation Recovery Encourages the residents of Santa Monica House to succeed during their substance abuse treatment programs and transition back into the community. Assault Survivor Kits® ALO purchases and prepares kits containing new clothing and hygiene products for victims of rape and other forms of violence. Over 350 kits are distributed to 12 Omaha hospitals and shelters. Children’s kits are provided via Project Harmony. Operation Teen Parent Teen parents in the Omaha school district are encouraged to complete their education and read to their children. Almost 900 books were distributed to students and four post-secondary scholarships were awarded (70 graduating seniors were celebrated). Operation Bear Hug Bears purchased by ALO are distributed to children in crisis situations via the Omaha Police precincts and eight other emergency agencies. Over 600 bears have comforted children in the last 12 months. Operation Literacy Reading skills are encouraged and books are distributed to children and adults in the greater Omaha area.

BUDDHA MAITREYA SOUL THERAPY CENTER was established in Omaha in December 2019 and is the central point of the Feeding & Helping the Homeless of Omaha program. The Center is open seven days a week and offers a range of meditation healing tools and energetic therapies—all are welcomed. The Center is part of the Church of Shambhala Vajradhara Maitreya Sangha, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1996. It is run by Sanat Buddha Maitreya Kumara and his wife Mandarava Tara Kumara. In 2020 Sanat Kumara was honored with the Marquis Who’s Who Worldwide Humanitarian Award and was recognized as one of the Top Professionals of the Year.

At Kids Can Community Center our mission is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences.

STABLISHED IN 1908 as Social Settlement Association of Omaha, a focus on children and families was a common thread throughout the first century of the organization. We had our first school-based program in 1916, our first summer program in 1923, and our first preschool program in 1942. In 2009, we rebranded to Kids Can Community Center to reflect our vision and commitment to children and families.

We operate two core programs to support student academic success: Early Childhood Education and Out-Of-School programs. Kids Can provides a setting of the highest quality as one of only three Omaha centers with the highest Level 5 rating awarded by the Department of Education in the Nebraska Step Up to Quality Program. Kids Can currently has eight sites offering Out-Of-School programs for children ages 5 to 13 years old. Our center at 4860 Q St. offers the widest variety of programs including mentoring, before-school programs, after-school programs, full-day programs when school is closed for conferences/in-service days and uninterrupted summer program. We also operate six school-based sites at Mandela, Miller Park, Minne Lusa, Wakonda, Gilder and Conestoga Magnet Elementary Schools and summer programs in North and South Omaha.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Mentors – Our Mentoring Program is one-on-one mentoring between a caring adult and a student who attends our after-school program. Mentor and mentee matches typically meet one hour a week on-site at our center.

Can Do Event Team – We are looking for volunteers to assist in the creation and promotion of our annual Can Do Luncheon honoring individuals and organizations with the “can do attitude” that make our community great!

We continue to value the belief that all children deserve an impactful enriching educational experience despite any socio-economic barrier they may encounter. Our younger children will be better prepared to enter kindergarten and our elementary students will participate in our unique STEMsmart Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Strength, Music, Art, Reading, Tutoring). Madonna offers world-class rehabilitation for adults and children. We specialize in brain trauma, spinal cord injuries, stroke, severe pulmonary conditions, cancer and neurological diseases.

n October of 2016, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals opened a 110-bed comprehensive post-acute care hospital in Omaha. Madonna’s Omaha Campus serves the nation’s most complex patients discharging from trauma care hospitals and other tertiary care hospitals from across the metro and the nation. Since opening its doors, the Omaha Campus has served patients from every hospital system in the metro area and patients from 35 states.

Research and Technology – Madonna’s Research Institute is a living laboratory that develops technological solutions to aid in therapy and to return patients to their life roles. Donor support of the Research Institute helps fund equipment and pilot studies that lay the groundwork for world-class rehabilitation.

Additionally, Madonna’s vision to establish a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) department and residency program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) became a reality in 2018. This is the only PM&R residency program in Nebraska and in a five-state upper Midwest region.

Annual Hope Appeal – helps Madonna sustain the mission of the hospitals by bridging the gap between what insurance reimbursements provide and the real cost of life-changing rehabilitation.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Volunteers are always welcome and make it possible for us to carry out our mission. All volunteers must first attend a volunteer orientation. Currently we are looking for: • Spanish Interpreters • Wish Granters As a member of a wish team, wish granters meet with the family, help the wish child determine the wish and act as a liaison between Make-A-Wish staff and the wish family during the wish process. Wish granters must be a minimum of 21 years old (requires background check).

Funding comes through donations from individuals, businesses, fundraising events, charitable trusts, bequests and foundations. Make-A-Wish Nebraska is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with an annual budget of over $3 million a year. Program costs account for 82% of every dollar, and the money raised in Nebraska helps grant Nebraska wishes.

HE MIDLANDS HUMANE SOCIETY opened in 2015 and proudly operates as the first and only humane society in Council Bluffs, Iowa. We directly serve the citizens of Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County, Iowa, helping with stray animals, owner-surrendered pets and adoptions. It is important to note that our reach is far greater, as we adopt animals to those living in cities far and wide. In fact, thanks to our social media presence, we have followers who like and share our animal stories all over the country! Since our inception, thousands of animals have begun their journey at MHS to find their happily ever after. The Nebraska Humane Society protects, saves, and enriches the lives of animals in the communities we serve.

HE NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY is one of the 10 largest shelters in the country, touching the lives of more than 25,000 animals each year. We are an open entry shelter that takes in all companion animals who have no other place to go. NHS also provides animal control services to Omaha and Sarpy County. We work to rescue and return stray pets, investigate cruelty cases, and to serve our community by upholding the laws that protect pets and people. Staff and volunteers care for, heal and rehome more than 10,000 animals annually. All animals are spayed or neutered and microchipped and have first shots. Many spend time rehabilitating in private foster homes. Others get lifesaving surgeries and treatments.

To rehabilitate wildlife for return to the wild, to preserve and restore native habitats, and to educate people about the importance of wildlife and ecosystems and to inspire action to protect them.

EBRASKA WILDLIFE REHAB has a two-fold mission: To rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild animals back into the wild and to educate people on how to live in harmony with wildlife and inspire them to take action to protect it. Each year, NWR receives more than 7,000 wild animals needing skilled medical and rehabilitative care and returns them to the wild and handles more than 12,000 telephone calls and e-mail inquiries from the public. Partnership 4 Kids’ mission is to engage and inspire students from preschool to graduation, guiding them to success with individualized support, career exploration and scholarships.

P

ARTNERSHIP 4 KIDS (P4K) provides Omaha’s most underserved youth with a continuum of long-term support designed to steward them through critical academic transitions beginning in elementary school and persisting through postsecondary education. All children have the potential to succeed, but not all children have the opportunities, resources and support needed to graduate and secure a career. P4K ensures that no matter their socioeconomic status, every program participant will receive the academic and emotional support, skills and resources they need to graduate on-time and attain a career that offers financial stability. P4K is bridging the opportunity gap for youth in under-resourced communities, enabling them to overcome their circumstances, achieve success, and change the landscape of our community.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Make a monthly gift on www.p4k.org to provide consistent support for student programming. Recurring gifts make it possible for P4K to provide students with additional supports, including academic and career coaching, safety assessments, and community referrals. PROJECT HOUSEWORKS: a local housing nonprofit that preserves affordable housing through quality, professional home repairs and modifications.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Investing in Project Houseworks changes lives for low-income senior homeowners with free home repairs and modifications and provides the dream of homeownership to individuals and familes who may otherwise not achieve that dream.

PROGRAMS: • Senior Program: Through this program, we provide free home repairs and modifications to low-income senior homeowners living in Douglas and Sarpy counties. These projects include: critical plumbing and electrical repairs, roof replacements, HVAC and water heater replacements, concrete and exterior work, tub-to-shower conversions, grab bars, hand rails, and so much more. These safety repairs and modifications increase independence, safety, and security. • Home Affordability Program: Through this program, we purchase, rehab, and resell quality homes to low-to-moderate income individuals and families. • Powering Hope: Project Houseworks and IBEW Local 22 partner twice a year to provide free electrical repairs for seniors in our community. Volunteer electricians dedicate hours of service to repair and replace outlets, light fixtures and assess whole-home electrical issues for future repair or replacement. • Warm the Metro: Members of the Heating and Cooling Contractors Association collaborate with Project Houseworks annually to provide free furnace safety checks to low-income senior homeowners who qualify for Project Houseworks. • Brush Up: Sponsored volunteer teams paint homes for seniors in need annually in August.

Providing hope and restoration to victims and survivors of human trafficking.

OUNDED IN 2013, Rejuvenating Women began as a social media support page for women who had experienced shame. Rejuvenating Women’s outreach soon grew to include weekly in-person support groups, and as attendance grew, Rejuvenating Women’s CEO, Julie Shrader, realized there was a great need in Omaha for human trafficking survivors to find healing. To meet these needs, Rejuvenating Women began to offer Omaha’s only programming specifically designed for victims and survivors of trafficking with round-the-clock staff. In summer of 2016, Rejuvenating Women purchased a 5,500-square-foot restoration home to house and rehabilitate up to 10 trafficking survivors for up to two years. In September of 2017, the Restored Wings Residential Program officially began. The program offers trauma-informed individual and group counseling; case management; mentorship; staff coordination and attendance at medical, dental, psychological, and vision appointments; equine therapy; tattoo branding removal and cover-up; life-skills, career education; and other services all free of charge.

Animals can give therapists the tools they need to begin and maintain an effective treatment program with solution-focused therapy. AAT can improve a person’s social, emotional, and cognitive functions.

We are open to consider any other skills or experience volunteers may have to offer.

When a client gets unconditional love from an animal they give better responses during therapy. Having a warm, furry animal to stroke and hug is therapeutic to clients who are not comfortable being touched by people.

Stephen Center partners with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty.

INCE 1984, STEPHEN CENTER serves homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha. Founders Sharon and Dick McNeil’s goal was simple provide food, shelter and safety to those in need. They bought an old bar in south Omaha, laid mattresses on the floor, and found resources for meals. Since then, Stephen Center has expanded its mission and services to serve over 1,200 men, women and children annually through three CARF-accredited programs:

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES: Monetary Donations help the Stephen Center serve over 250 people on our campus daily, providing basic needs like food, shelter and clothing, as well as life-changing counseling and case management. Donations can be made in several ways: • Online at www.stephencenter.org

The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter provides shelter, meals and clothing for homeless men, women and children. The shelter has beds for 32 men and 32 women, as well as up to five family units. Shelter clients meet regularly with a Stephen Center case manager to develop and implement a plan to emerge from homelessness and regain independence and stability. In 2020, the average shelter stay was 33 days with 83% exiting to permanent/positive housing destinations.

The HERO Program (Health, Empowerment, Responsibility, and Opportunity) is a CARF-accredited, 64-bed state licensed substance abuse treatment program assisting those who have made a commitment to overcome the life-destroying effects of drugs, alcohol and co-occurring mental illness. The facility combines lowincome housing and substance abuse treatment focusing on homeless and low-income individuals. In addition to inpatient services, HERO provides substance abuse evaluations, and intensive outpatient treatment services. In 2020, 284 (65%) people graduated from the program.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Stephen Center offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups, including:

Stephen Center’s Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Apartments provide housing and voluntary access to supportive services for people moving from homelessness to independent, supportive living. Tenants live in a stable environment, increase life skills and income, and gain control over decisions that impact personal and familial needs. There are 61 PSH units for rent to those who meet income and disability qualifications. In 2020, the average length of stay was two years with 95% exiting to permanent/positive housing destinations.

OUTH EMERGENCY SERVICES Youth Emergency Services assists youth experiencing homelessness and near homelessness by providing critically-needed resources which support them in their desire to be self-sufficient.

OR THE LAST 47 YEARS, Youth Emergency Services has been providing services and programs to homeless and near-homeless youth ages 12-21.

Programs offered: • Street Outreach / Street Outreach Center: YES Outreach staff seek out youth in crisis and offer basic need items and emergency supplies. Youth are invited to visit the Street Outreach Center to receive additional services including a hot meal, a warm shower, laundry services and heath care. • Emergency Shelter: A short-term housing solution for youth needing immediate shelter. • Maternity Group Home: A program that supports and provides long-term housing for pregnant and/or parenting teen mothers. • Transitional Living Program: Offers youth long-term services while living in apartment-style housing and working with case managers to set and accomplish goals. • Rapid Rehousing: Assists youth ages 18-24 in living in their own apartments. YES subsidizes their rent and provides support and services as needed. • Making A Connection, Prevention, Mentoring

Causes of youth homelessness: • Abuse: Nearly half of homeless and runaway youth cite physical or sexual abuse as the reason they left home. • Foster care: Foster care youth are discharged from the state at age 19, often lacking income, education and social support. • Sexual orientation: More than 25% of LGBTQ teens are rejected by their families and end up on the streets. • Pregnancy: Many young mothers run away or are kicked out because they are pregnant. Effects of youth homelessness: • Instability: With no permanent address, it’s virtually impossible for homeless youth to attend school, get a job and secure housing. • Survival sex: One in four youth has traded sex for survival means such as food, clothing and shelter. • Violence: This year, more than 6,000 homeless youth will die from assault, illness or suicide.

She also established herself as a leader outside the pool as a disability advocate, author, motivational speaker and CoCEO of a Social Impact Agency and Production Studio. Event Description/Theme: Nebraska Children’s Home Society is hosting a unique and exciting team-building competition to design and build the best one-of-a-kind miniature golf lane.

Event Description/Theme: This gala puts the “fun” in fundraiser. It’s hosted by the NHS guild, “Friends Forever”, and they know how to throw a party! Black Tie and Tails combines heartwarming stories, VIP (Very Important Pet) appearances along with a spectacular silent auction, raise the paddle, cocktail hour and dinner, all to benefit the animals. Come commune with other pet lovers, benefit the cause, and help us spread the word about the great work we do. Need we say more?

Event Description/Theme: Join us for this annual event as we release more than 500 bats back into the wild. In 2022 we hope to return to an in-person festival AND broadcast live on Facebook. Viewers in-person and at home will get a chance to see the bats up close, watch them fly, and talk to our staff about bats and bat rehabilitation. The exact date and location will be announced on social media and by e-mail and release will take place around dusk on Bat Release Night.

Teams of up to eight people will compete to win one of three coveted awards (Best Overall, Most Creative, and People's Choice) all proceeds will benefit the children and families served by NCHS.

Event Description/Theme: Release’s 2022 Gala, with Honorary Chairs, Howard & Rhonda Hawks, will be an unforgettable evening, featuring Derek Clark, international motivational speaker with 250 million views on his Rapping Dad videos and author of the critically acclaimed “I Will Never Give Up” book series. Derek will share his incredible story of overcoming a childhood of unthinkable abuse and abandonment. With the help of foster parents and mentors he was able to defy the limitations imposed upon him and go on to help others find strength and solutions in their own lives.

Event Description/Theme: The 24th annual D.J.’s Hero Awards Luncheon will honor 15 deserving Nebraska high school seniors with a $10,000 academic scholarship each. Funds raised from the luncheon support Salvation Army programs that help children living in poverty in the Omaha metro. Peggy and David Sokol partnered with The Salvation to establish the D.J.’s Hero Awards in memory of their son, D.J., in 1999.

Youth Emergency Services assists youth experiencing homelessness and near homelessness by providing critically-needed resources which support them in their desire to be self-sufficient.

Featured Event: Dance for a Chance Date: October 13, 2022 Event Description/Theme: For more than a decade, Youth Emergency Services has hosted Dance for a Chance to help fund programs that help homeless and near-homeless youth get back on their feet. Similar to Dancing with the Stars, YES recruits members of the community who partner with a professional instructor to perfect a short dance routine – while also fundraising for the organization. The pair then performs in front of a panel of judges and a sellout crowd of YES supporters for their chance at the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.
