Die Geschichte des Glacier Express reicht zurück bis in die goldenen 20er Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts, als wohlhabende Touristen aus aller Welt begannen, die Magie der Schweizer Bergewelt zu entdecken. Und schon bald nach seiner Jungfernfahrt am 25. Juni 1930 gehörte die Reise im «langsamsten Schnellzug der Welt» zu den Musts während einer Grand Tour de Suisse. The history of the Glacier Express goes back to the Roaring Twenties in the last century, a time when wealthy tourists from all over the world were discovering the magic of the Swiss Alps for the first time. It didn’t take long after the train’s maiden voyage on 25 June 1930 for a trip on the «slowest express train in the world» to become de rigueur on every Grand Tour of Switzerland.

Knapp elf Stunden dauerte die Fahrt vom abgelegenen Walliser Bergdorf Zermatt am Fusse des Matterhorns ins malerische Oberengadin nach St.Moritz damals. Und auch 90 Jahre später hat die 291 km lange Stecke durch drei Schweizer Kantone, gespickt mit 91 Tunnels und 291 schwindelerregenden Brücken und Viadukten, nichts von ihrer Faszination verloren.

Analoge und digitale Betreuung

Mit den 2019 neu in Dienst gestellten Kurswagen der Excellence Class haben Bahnenthusiasten nun Gelegenheit, dieses einmalige Erlebnis im Komfort des 21. Jahrhunderts zu geniessen. Vorbei an tiefblauen Bergseen, Wildwasser durchtosen Schluchten, malerischen Bergdörfern, geschichtsträchtigen Städten und majestätischen, schneebedeckten Alpengipfeln – erlesenes Gourmet-Menü inklusive. Schliesslich dauert die Reise im Glacier Express auch heute noch knapp acht Stunden.

Tatsächlich kann es das in edlen Gletscherfarben gehaltene Interieur der Excellence Class problemlos mit dem verschwenderischen Luxus eines Schweizer Fünfsterne-Hotelpalastes aufnehmen. So bieten die unverschämt bequemen, elektrisch verstellbaren Polstersessel nicht nur jede Menge persönlichen Freiraum, sondern jeder Fahrgast hat auch garantiert einen Fensterplatz. An Ende des Wagens liegt eine der Excellence Class vorbehaltene Bar, wo Gäste einen stilvollen Aperitif oder Nachmittagscocktail geniessen können. Ein an der Decke angebrachter überdimensionaler Kompass erleichtert dabei im verwirrenden Wechselspiel der Spitzkehren, Tunnels und Streckenkreuzungen die Orientierung. Neben einem Concierge aus Fleisch und Blut steht jedem Gast ausserdem ein iPad zur Verfügung mit Informationen rund um Fahrtstrecke, Land und Leute. WiFi ist selbstverständlich ebenfalls mit an Bord. At the time, the journey – from the remote Valais mountain village of Zermatt at the foot of the chocolate-box Matterhorn to St.Moritz in the picture-postcard Upper Engadine – lasted for just under eleven hours. And 90 years later, the 291-kilometre journey through three Swiss cantons, punctuated by 91 tunnels and 291 vertiginous bridges and viaducts, has lost none of its fascination.

As you pass azure mountain lakes, deep gorges riven by thundering mountain torrents, picture-postcard Alpine villages, historic towns and magnificent snow-capped summits, you have the leisure to indulge in the inclusive gourmet menu. After all, even today the journey lasts for the best part of eight hours.

And the sumptuous interior of Excellence Class, done out in stunning glacier colours, gives the extravagant opulence of a Swiss luxury fivestar hotel a run for its money. Not only does your plush, unashamedly comfortable and electrically adjustable seat give you more than enough room to stretch out, every guest is also guaranteed a window seat. At the end of the coach you’ll find the exclusive Glacier Bar, where a nod to the barman will procure you a stylish aperitif or afternoon cocktail. The giant compass set into the ceiling helps you keep track of which direction you’re heading as the train twists and turns its way between switchbacks, tunnels and level crossings. In addition to the concierge (a real person), every guest can consult their own personal iPad for the full rundown on the journey, the country and its people. And it goes without saying that there is WiFi on board too.

Gastronomisches Verwöhnprogramm

Höhepunkt einer Reise in der maximal 20 Gästen vorbehaltenen Excellence Class aber ist das gastronomische Angebot mit einem Gourmet-Lunch, der sich über mehrere Stunden hinzieht. Zu den Highlights des Menüs zählen geräucherte Schweizer Forellenfilets mit ofengebackener Rande, Erbsen-Minz-Suppe mit getrockneten Alpenblüten oder butterzartes Schweizer Rindsfilet mit getrüffelter Kartoffelmousseline und geschmorten Lauch.

Nach einer Auswahl lokaler Käsespezialitäten serviert das Zugteam zum süssen Abschluss schliesslich lauwarmen Gâteau au Chocolat. Begleitet wird das Menü von einer Auswahl erlesener Schweizer Weine, sodass die knapp acht Stunden an Bord fast wie im Flug vergehen, bis der Zug am späten Nachmittag unter dem majestätischen Gipfelturm des Matterhorns schliesslich in seinem Zielbahnhof Zermatt einfährt.

Gastronomic pampering

The high point of a journey in Excellence Class – with no more than 20 guests in all – is the fine dining experience on board, the centrepiece of which is the hours-long gourmet lunch. Menu highlights include smoked fillet of Swiss trout with roast beetroot, pea-and-mint soup with dried Alpine blooms, and melt-in-the-mouth fillet of Swiss beef with truffled potato purée and braised leeks.

After the selection of speciality local cheeses, the on-board staff serve up the sweet conclusion of your gourmet meal: warm gâteau au chocolat. The menu is accompanied by a careful selection of fine Swiss wines, making the nearly-eight-hour journey simply fly by. The train draws in to its destination in Zermatt – below the magnificent peak of the Matterhorn – in the late afternoon, and your journey is complete.
