Shop That Vibe

As millennials begin to settle into their newlypurchased homes, the task of furnishing them comes down to one question — what’s the vibe? Sure, there’s plenty of big box furniture stores catering to fit every budget, but millennials aren’t exactly the same shoppers as Gen X. They aren’t looking for cookie cutter rooms where everything looks like it was purchased in one place. No, these shoppers are all about building a mood. Creating spaces where they can drink Negronis and eat cheeseboards while photographing it all for Instagram.

So how does an independent furniture shop stand out? Answer: Curated Bespoke and Vintage pieces.

While the Wayfairs and RHs of the world compete for get-it-now designs that lack personality, local retailer Clayton Gray Home sources heirloom-quality pieces like imported Moroccan rugs, African carved wood stools, local plaster art and vintage crystal glassware. While the shop does include some newer products from brand names Palecek, Made Goods and Arteriors, owner Wendy Garraty says it’s all about blending the new and sourced pieces to create a final look.

“You never want someone to look at your home and know exactly which store every piece came from,” says Wendy Garraty, owner of Clayton Gray Home. “That’s why our customers love shopping with us. We work with a variety of vendors and carefully curate the whole look for them. They shop at Clayton Gray Home because it feels good — like a place they want to live in.”

Designing with antiques and vintage items isn’t necessarily a new concept. Then again, Clayton Gray Home isn’t selling grandma’s old china. When you have expert designers sourcing all the items and pulling together the look for you, you’re no longer shopping for vintage or new pieces. You’re shopping for a vibe. M

Local Tampa Bay Dentist Creates Custom Artwork “Goatavious”

As a dentist with his own great smile and a keen sense of humor, Dr. Ron O’Neal has been helping his patients perfect their smiles for over 20 years. Dr. O’Neal has always had a flair for interior design creating his own dental offices with unique items in an eclectic style. It’s contemporary, casual and comforting, yet looks nothing like an ordinary dental office. Lately, Dr. O’Neal has discovered his artistic talents through creating his own custom artwork called Goatavious. Initially started as a joke, O’Neal said that he wanted to obtain an emotional support goat named “Goatavious,” the likes of which would drop horns and lay a gentle reminder to those that had cast

shade and untruths during opportune moments of struggle. “Although, I never obtained a goat, I hear they now utilize them for yoga,” says O’Neal.

“I have always had a passion for art and the creative process,” says O’Neal. “Creating with my hands as of late with wood, canvas, plaster and acrylic has become a creative outlet and place where I could think and reflect. In a world so filled with technology and screens, it provides me with an outlet to simply check out and work on my art and ultimately me.”

“Art is a cathartic type of therapist in my own life, devoid of any and all pre misconceptions. It is a time to let your mind wander and imagination soar,”

says O’Neal. “It provides you with an opportunity to be bold, a safe place to be vulnerable, a chance to be humbled, and in the face of anything, most importantly, be you.”

Goatavious art has been featured at Five Deuces Gallery in St. Petersburg and House of Shadows in South Tampa.

“Art for me is like life in that it teaches lessons of inclusivity instead of exclusivity,” says O’Neal. “We as humans, artists, and observers all have the basic desire to be heard, be valued, be loved and be our true self without judgment.” M

Modern Coastal Elegance at Hyde Park House

Designed to display stunning views of Bayshore Boulevard’s sparkling waterfront, the tree-lined neighborhoods of Hyde Park and downtown Tampa’s dynamic skyline, Hyde Park House enables its residents to enjoy iconic images of their community from the comfort of spacious condominiums boasting high ceilings, multiple balconies and lots of natural light.

Residential floor plans feature floor-to-ceiling windows and wall-to-wall sliding glass doors that beautifully frame those unobstructed, captivating views.

“The windows are the art,” said Kristen McKinlay who, along with business partner Melanie Rose, recently designed the interior of one of the new development’s units.

“Whether you are looking out from the living or dining room or standing on any of the balconies, you feel like you are captain of a cruise ship floating on the water,” she noted, adding that seeing the sun both rise and set is one of the perks afforded homeowners.

Creating an elegant interior that embraces and enhances those picturesque views led the McKinlay Rose Interiors’ owners/designers to curate furnishings, finishes and fixtures that connect coastal influences with the picture-perfect setting of the eighth floor residence.

Overseeing design elements for every room required the design team to leave “no detail untouched.”

Incorporating custom millwork crafted by the designers’ full time, in-house contractors in the den, installing sculptural light fixtures hand-fashioned by independent artisans and featuring fabrics, floor rugs and paintings highlighting hues of soft blue, cream and grey tones demonstrated their attention to detail and dedication to ensuring the interior complements, rather than competes with, the building’s vibrant exterior palette.

Other nods to nature include a sunburst mirror bordered with intricate beadwork and radiating lavish silver leaf rays of light that greets guests as they enter the foyer, a zebra-striped runner lining the lengthy hallway between the den and living and dining rooms as well as French oak floors resembling driftwood.

“It’s the vibe of driftwood but with a soft, cashmere feel,” said McKinlay of the flooring.

Texture also plays a prominent role. Foyer walls are coveed with silver lead grass cloth that pairs perfectly with wall mounted, hand applied silver sconces. A polished stainless steel framed head- and footboard in the primary bedroom is inset with capiz shells arranged in a starburst pattern.

Lighting is key to the overall design. Chandeliers, sconces and pendant lights add interest and allure with their intriguing shapes and strategic placements. With the benefit of both recessed lights and ceiling and wall fixtures, occupants are able to create an ambiance similar to candlelight or adjust lights for a bold, bright look, according to their mood. Motorized window shades control natural light levels, adjusting sunlight as needed without masking the views. Adding to the luxurious look are lustrous elements like the Bianco Rhino white marble tinted with subtle white and beige shades and grey to gold veining. Each of the four living room mirrors made from a simple cockbead moulding set in a brushed silver finish feature centerpiece selenite crystals. Oxidized mirror tiles form the kitchen’s backsplash to add a vintage touch to an otherwise modern space. A silver framed bevel mirror finished in antiquated champagne silver leaf and bookmarked by natural selenite crystal wands accented by silver leaf sconces, create a spa-like appearance in the primary bathroom that is outfitted with an extravagantly large walk-in shower with and nearby soaking tub. Textures Tower Over Downtown St. Pete

Blending Old World charm with modern design to create a polished and welcoming living space requires both bold choices and subtle nuances.

Rob Bowen, principal of the St. Petersburg-based Rob Bowen Design Group, achieved that balance by mixing neutral furniture and fabrics, reflective surfaces like mirrors and metals and textured wall treatments featuring graphic designs to compose an interior well suited to its upscale, metropolitan setting, while also providing a comfortable and welcoming living environment.

“We needed a level of warmth and sophistication so we layered in textures to make it all look timeless, but to also spark a bit of emotion due to the unexpected touches that make this place special,” Bowen said about the design project at Bliss condominium in St. Pete.

Residences within this downtown development include open great rooms, walls of windows and balconies with sweeping views of the city’s skyline and coast. The three bedroom, two-and-a half bathroom space owned by Bowen’s clients is configured to showcase not only the city’s scenic waterfront, but also the bustling thoroughfare of Beach Drive that is lined with popular restaurants and shops.

“This condo is deep urban living with lots of city vibes,” Bowen said. “As people walk in the front door, the dining room is what they first see from the hallway. We wanted it to look beautiful, but also feel familiar when their eyes land on it. That’s what makes a home feel like home.”

From the moment the elevator doors open to the vestibule, the tone for what awaits across the threshold is set. A zebra hide patterned rug, statement chandelier, dramatic bowl sculpture and a sketch signed by noted artist Dale Chihuly make an indelible impression, and a powerful statement, within a modest space.

Just inside, the foyer features a wall display of local artists’ works that the clients collected themselves.

The dining area features four wall-mounted antique mirrors that frame the incredible urban, bayfront view from the opposite side of the flat. Aside from the view, the eye is drawn up to the chandelier crafted from delicate strands of bronze, brass, nickel and iron draped over a metal frame. Flanking the waxed oak table are statement chairs made from hammered nickel. Classic slipcover dining chairs surround the rest of the table, adding a familiar and soft layer to the room

The level of meticulous detailing follows through to the walls which are wrapped in woven seagrass with a bronze leaf reveal beneath.

“It feels rich and organic, but from far away seems soft without screaming for attention,” Bowen noted.

The kitchen exudes a homey yet modern feel that features open shelves and a backsplash assembled from glazed reclaimed, ribbed brick.

“Each brick is colored a little differently due to the variance in the glazing, which tells a story,” said Bowen who compares the exposed shelves to the welcoming nature of an Italian kitchen. “There is a modern but homey feel to the kitchen, a mix of clean modern with a warm, inviting and sophisticated vibe.”

The primary bedroom accommodates a cerused wood finished, four poster king-sized bed frame with a woven cane head- and foot-board that allows ample room for a chaise lounge and side table. A backdrop of wall-to-wall sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows provide sweeping views that extend above and beyond roofs and treetops.

“The bedroom emulates being in a treehouse — it’s light and airy during the day. At night, once the heavy, metallic drapes are drawn, it transforms to this cozy and protected oasis,” Bowen said. Earth tones layered on top of a plush rug add to the comfort factor, while the legs on the side table resemble tree limbs for an organic touch. M

Tropical Florida Living with Stunning Waterfront Views on Snell Island

Waterfront living in Snell Island offers some of the most beautiful waterfront views in the area. The eclectic neighborhood is one of the most desirable addresses in St. Petersburg with its array of architectural homes styles. The sprawling one-story home boasts 6,270 square feet with five bedrooms and five bathrooms set on just under a half acre of prestigious waterfront.

The block home was was constructed in 1964 and reinforced with steel beams and updated throughout the years. The center of the home has a ceiling height up to 17 feet.
