Tampa Museum of Art Celebrates Oswaldo Vigas The current exhibition, Oswaldo Vigas: Transformations, showcases one of Venezuela’s most ambitious and celebrated modern artists. On display are 60 works, created between 1940-1980, including 40 paintings and select sketches and drawings that show the inspiration of his creations. It’s the first Vigas solo exhibition in the United States and emphasizes the interrelations of his paintings and drawings. “Vigas has been widely admired in Europe and Latin America for decades, yet is relatively new to American audiences,” said Joanna Robotham, TMA’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. “The exhibition Oswald Vigas: Transformations, firmly anchors the artist as one of the 20th century’s foremost abstract painters. I am excited to share Vigas’ important paintings with our audience and present a more global view of post-war abstraction.” Vigas was born in 1923 and studied medicine at the Universidad de los Andes (ULA) in Mérida, Venezuela. Vigas moved to Paris in 1952 and lived abroad for 12 years, immersing himself into the post-war art scene for those 12 years. Upon returning to Venezuela, he lived in his homeland until his death in 2014, at the age of 90. Vigas found inspiration in both nature and landscapes, and the traditions of his country, including the female figures inspired by Venezuelan mythology in his early works. He was influenced by Pablo Picasso and later in Zen Buddhism. The TMA exhibition includes two of the wellknown witches or Bruja paintings – Infant Witch and Little Witch. Vigas also explored geometric forms and colors and created monumental murals at the University City of Caracas, designated a World Heritage Cultural Site. The exhibition has been organized by the Grand Rapids Museum of Art with support from the Oswaldo Vigas Foundation and the Grand Rapids Art Museum Exhibition Society.

Lets face it, we expect a lot out of the car we drive. Sure, it needs to get us from A to B, but it must also be an extension of our own personal style, and be a rewarding experience, as we take care of the day to day. The newly restyled BMW X5 does just that. Roomy enough for the transport of people and packages, yet fun to drive for a night on the town. Friday afternoon I picked up my weekend test drive of the 2019 BMW X5. After a short tutorial of the bells and whistles, off I go for a weekend of fun. A quick trip across the Causeway to Clearwater gave me the perfect time to open the jumbo size sunroof. With so much open space, it’s almost like driving a convertible. Between the sunroof and the sound system, it isn’t long before I have fooled myself into thinking I’m on vacation and not just picking up a friend
from the other side of the Bay. Navigating the crazy Tampa Bay area traffic is quite easy with good site lines for the driver, and a fantastic blind spot notification system. As I zip around the city to a restaurant opening, and play chauffeur to a few friends, I am having a blast driving something much more that a standard SUV. The power and the comfort...do I really have to return this car Monday? As I return the vehicle back to the friendly team at Reeves BMW, I realize that I was enjoying the drive so much, I hardly had time to fully use all the features and options it provides. Unwind with the Hottest New Fitness Trend: Goat Yoga Meet Debbie and Rob Canton Founders of the Grady Goat Foundation

A passion for giving back was the inspiration for creating the Grady Goat Foundation, and now a fun place to workout and unwind with Grady Goat Yoga, offered on weekends. Founded by two city-dwellers, who had moved out to the country, Rob and his wife Debbie Canton have created a sanctuary for goats, and a place for peace and tranquility at the Grady Goat Farm, formerly the Hat Trick Ranch, in Thonotosassa, FL. Named for Grady, a goat that was born with muscular, vision and hearing disabilities, Debbie Canton wanted to create a foundation in Grady’s name, in hopes of providing a way to support animals and inspire children facing their own physical, mental, or economic adversity. Grady Goat Yoga was started as the primary way to raise funds to help support this mission. Grady passed away after 6 months, but his inspiration and ability to face and conquer adversity lives on in the Grady Goat Foundation. Rob Canton, President & CEO of Athletes and Causes, was able to assist Debbie in her mission to launch the Grady Goat Foundation, with his expertise

of operating his own nonprofit, Athletes and Causes Foundation that formed in 2014. Grady Goat Foundation was founded in April 2017, and since then Grady Goat Yoga has hosted over 7,500 yogis. “What makes Grady Goat different, is that our “Grady Goat Yoga” is the only one we know of that is run exclusively as a non-profit foundation,” said Debbie Canton. “With all proceeds from our Saturday and Sunday morning sessions going to charity, we knew we had the friendliest goats, and a beautiful indoor and outdoor setting very close to lots of people throughout Tampa Bay, so it quickly became evident that this would be a great way to fund our mission.” Currently, the farm has 125 goats
and during the morning goat yoga sessions the friendly goats will sit in your lap, hop on your back and even chew your hair, while doing yoga poses. Sometimes there is more laughter and fun, than an actual workout. Tickets are required and most weekends sell-out quickly. The farm is available for private parties too. While no yoga experience is necessary, guests must bring a love of animals and nature. It is a perfect way to give to yourself, and others, at the same time.

The Junior League of Tampa Screens Human Trafficking Film The Junior League of Tampa joined the USF student organization Triumph Over Trafficking, in hosting a screening of the documentary film, “Stopping Traffic.” Following the screening, film director, Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sarah Pretorius of Selah Freedom, participated in a Q & A session. The documentary screening was part of an awareness campaign by The Junior League of Tampa, focusing on human trafficking awareness in the month of January, including teaming up for a Coast to Coast Awareness campaign with the Junior Leagues of Greater Orlando and Daytona Beach, to increase awareness of human trafficking along the 1-4 corridor. Statistics rank Florida as the third highest trafficking destination in the country, with Tampa ranking 12th in the nation in cases reported. It is estimated that more than 20 million men, women and children around the world are victims of human trafficking.

AT&T’s most recent contribution, in 2018, allowed Pinellas Park High School to purchase a drone to enhance STEM lessons in classes and an after-school STEM club. It was a philanthropic evening for Shorecrest Preparatory School, as five host families including Helen and Chris Barrott, Stacy and Will Conroy, Nikki and Paul Pagano, Sarah and Augie Ribeiro, and Elizabeth and David Samuelson, challenged other families within the community to match and exceed $30,000 in personal gifts and pledges, to support Shorecrest’s efforts to build the new Innovation Center and Community Commons. The challenge was accepted by 30 families. The “30 for 30” event took place in early January at Sea Salt in downtown St. Pete. “Shorecrest has been more than just a phenomenal educational opportunity for our children. Over the past 15 years the Shorecrest community has become a family to us,” said Elizabeth Samuelson, Immediate Past Board Chair and one of the host families. “Shorecrest is in the middle of its largest fundraising campaign and with the recent momentum from our extremely generous donors, we are rounding the bases toward home. We need to continue to dig deep and come

USF Health has opened a new option for women in Tampa Bay, the new Pamela Muma Women’s Health Center, located across from Tampa General Hospital. The center opened in February and is offering personalized care exclusively for women. The members-only center offers a solution for women, who seek a more personal and navigated approach to their care. The low doctor-to-patient ratio offers priority access for healthcare needs and tailors to each woman. The center was a result of a $2 million gift by Pamela Muma, whose own health challenges created a desire for a better solution for women. “This will be a godsend to women,” said Muma. “It’s been a dream of mine, a passion, to build a center of excellence that will treat the primary health care needs of women of all ages, in a relaxing and comforting setting. With affordable fares and convenient departures every day of the week except Monday, it’s the perfect way to get to your favorite destinations in Downtown St. Pete, and the Channel District and Sparkman Wharf in downtown Tampa through April 30, 2019. In St. Pete, board or land just steps from the Vinoy Resort and across the street from Beach Drive’s outdoor cafes and museums. In Tampa, riders board and land near the Florida Aquarium. The regular crossing time is scheduled at approximately 50 minutes. Weather and traffic conditions can impact the transit time. All guests must be ticketed and ready for loading 20 minutes prior to departure. The ticket window is manned one hour before the first scheduled departure on any given day. It’s bike friendly. There are facilities for standard 2-wheel bicycle storage on the ferry, with an additional $1 fee each way. Guests must be able to handle their own bicycles; crew cannot assist with the loading and unloading of bicycles. A maximum of 30 bicycles can be carried. Service animals are allowed on board. Other pets may be allowed on board the ferry on a case by case basis.

It takes a village of people to achieve what the Tampa Bay Heart Ball has set out to accomplish this year — $3 million. It would be a first for the American Heart Association in Tampa Bay. The event is being led by event chairs Paul and Rose Reilly. Paul is Chairman and CEO of Raymond James Financial. To make this goal a reality, some of Tampa Bay’s most influential business leaders and philanthropists have joined forces to put together an elegant evening themed The Gift of Time. The auction, led by Kevin Hourigan, CEO of Bayshore Solutions, with significant help from Bill Edwards of The Edwards Group, is already shaping up to be exciting with several items that are sure to be popular, including a private dinner prepared by Emeril Lagasse at The Club at Treasure Island, a week’s vacation in a luxury villa in Punta de Mita, Mexico and a 2020 Super Bowl package in Miami. As a member of the Heart Ball executive cabinet, Edwards involvement is personal. He acknowledges the significant goal the cabinet has set for the event. “It is a huge goal,” said Edwards. “But cardiovascular
disease is a huge problem in Tampa Bay and across the country. As an open-heart bypass surgery survivor, I am alive because of heart research and continued research is the only way we are going to find a cure.” Edwards was key to securing Village People for the headline entertainment for the Heart Ball — completing the village of people working together for the mission of the American Heart Association. The 2019 Heart Ball event will take place Saturday, March 30 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside and is sponsored by Tampa General Hospital and Sykes Enterprises.

Take Charge Of Your Heart Health By Robert Sanchez, MD, FACC February is American Heart Month and, I think, the perfect time to check in on your cardiovascular health. Since the first American Heart Month took place in 1964 after being declared a federally designated event by President Lyndon B. Johnson, much progress has been made. But the fact remains that cardiovascular diseases, which include heart disease and stroke, still claim more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. The good news is, about 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented with education and simple lifestyle changes. Whether it’s my friends, family or patients that I have worked with in the past, I try to help them understand that “these lifestyle changes start with you,” so I practice what I preach. The first step to assessing your risk for cardiovascular disease is to learn about your risk factors. Talk to your family members and learn your family health history. Relay this information to your medical provider and while you are at it, don’t forget to pass it on to your children. Then, I encourage people to schedule a visit with their health care provider. During that visit, make sure you learn these important numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol (LDL and HDL), blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). Once you know them, talk with your medical
professional about steps you can take to either improve or maintain them within a healthy range. The age-old advice of watching your diet and making sure you get the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity each week should be part of the plan. And if you need resources, the American Heart Association’s website, heart.org, is full of information including healthy recipes, health tips and advice on steps you can take to help you lead your best life. Make a commitment to yourself this American Heart Month. Learn how you can improve your individual health and then share your journey to inspire friends, family members, co-workers and members of our community to do the same. Together we will lead healthier lives and work toward ending heart disease and stroke.

Simple Changes To Improve Heart Health February is American Heart Month and an ideal time to remind the Tampa Bay community to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families and friends involved. Making small changes every day can add up to big improvements in your overall health. The American Heart Association has defined ideal cardiovascular health based on seven risk factors – Life’s Simple 7® – that people can improve through lifestyle changes. These health behaviors and metrics represent seven out of the top 10 most costly risk factors for employers. Studies show people in optimal ranges of Life’s Simple 7® have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke compared to people in poor ranges. People with at least five ideal Life’s Simple 7® metrics had a 78 percent reduced risk for heartrelated death compared to people with no ideal metrics. Life’s Simple 7® outlines a few easy steps you can take to live a healthier lifestyle. Seven small steps to big changes. It is easy, and anyone can do it. Start with just one or two. Manage Blood Pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls. Sometimes the pressure in arteries is higher than it should be, a condition known as high blood pressure. Stress and poor diet have both been linked to high blood pressure, so it’s important to be well and eat smart to help positively influence your blood pressure numbers. Control Cholesterol. Cholesterol comes from two sources: your body (which makes all the cholesterol you need) and food made from animals. Eating smart, adding color and moving more can all help lower your cholesterol. Reduce Blood Sugar. Blood glucose (aka sugar) is an

important fuel for your body. It comes from the food you eat, so it’s important to eat smart. Cut out added sugars by checking nutrition facts, labels and ingredients, limiting sweets and sugary beverages, choosing simple foods over heavily processed ones and rinsing canned fruits if they are in syrup. And you can move more, because moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity can also help your body respond to insulin. Get Active. Try to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of both), preferably spread throughout the week. Even short bursts of exercise can be beneficial, and all those little steps will lead to big gains in the long run. Eat Better. Eat a colorful diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry, fish and nuts. Try to limit sugary foods and drinks, fatty or processed meats, and salt. Lose Weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is important for your health. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you eat. Learning to balance healthy eating and physical activity can help you lose weight more easily and keep it off. Stop Smoking. Not smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. Smoking damages your circulatory system and increases your risk of multiple diseases, but the good news is that your lungs can begin to heal themselves as soon as you stop. Moving more can help you on your journey, since physical activity can help you manage stress.

For music lovers throughout Tampa Bay, the 8th annual Gasparilla Music Festival presented by Cigar City Brewing, delivers a terrific lineup of bands performing at the two-day festival, March 9 - 10 in downtown Tampa. More than 40 bands, across five stages, will perform along Tampa’s waterfront. “We have some amazing artists in store for our 8th year,” said David Cox, Executive Director of the Gasparilla Music Foundation. More than 20,000 people are expected at the two day festival, held in and around Curtis Hixon Park. American folk rockers, The Avett Brothers will be headlining on Saturday, March 9, and rocker and soul artist Gary Clark Jr. will be closing the festival on Sunday, March 10. While the line-up is still being finalized, the Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival (GIFF), has announced select films for the 2019 Feature Film Competition Lineup. The six day festival strives to inspire, educate and entertain through its annual celebration of film. Now in its 13th year, the festival emerged as one of the fastest-growing film festivals in the U.S. and has been recognized as a top-50 festival. The festival is operated by the nonprofit Tampa Film Institute, Inc. GIFF is expecting attendance of 15,000 film lovers at over 110 films and 20+ parties and events, including industry panels that are free to attend. From the opening red carpet party, the filmmaker forums, film screenings, and closing night party, GIFF is supporting and cultivating the film industry in Tampa Bay and throughout the state of Florida. The Opening VIP reception on March 19, celebrates the opening of the festival with food and drinks served by Zukku Sushi. Films will be showcased throughout the week all over the Bay area, with the bulk of the film screenings and appearances at Centro Ybor AMC.

ooking to escape to the east coast for a couple days, or a quick getaway to relax in the Atlantic Ocean? In the heart of Ft. Lauderdale Beach, the Bahia Mar, meaning Ocean Bay, a DoubleTree by Hilton, has been undergoing updates and renovations, and we recently visited for a quick weekend. Set on 40 acres, the hotel property has been an icon on the beach since the 1950s, and we were told that construction of the property actually began in March of 1949, nearly 70 years ago. The 296 rooms have been updated with a nautical theme of white and blue interiors, and have spectacular views of ocean or marina. The property offers accommodations in the Tower and Marina Buildings, with most rooms offering a step out terrace. Internet access is available in-room, along with a mini-fridge and microwave available upon request. The 250 slip marina can accommodate

100 mega yachts and offers more than four miles of floating docks. The property is host to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and Tortuga Music Festival. The pool area has been renovated and a new rooftop pool bar and restaurant are set to open this spring. Private pool cabanas are available for an additional fee through the hotel concierge. nown as Wisconsin’s “thumb,” Door County is surrounded by Lake Michigan on three sides, and is located about an hour north of Green Bay. The peninsula is approximately 70 miles long, with 300 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, 53 public beaches, 34 outlying islands, 11 lighthouses and 5 state parks. Founded in 1851, Door County is named after Death’s Door, the aptly named water passage that lies off the tip of the peninsula where the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay converge. Door County is also one of the

largest producers of tart cherries in the USA, growing between 8-15 million pounds annually on roughly 2,500 acres. Explore North Bay where shipwrecks are scattered and many are still visible in the shallow waters. Spanish Cuisine with Southern American Flair

A
fusion of flavors await at the newly opened Mole Y Abuela. Located in the former Fly Restaurant & Bar, in downtown Tampa, we were able to have a tasting preview the night before Mole Y Abuela opened to the public on February 9. The concept for Mole Y Abuela was created with celebrity Chef Fabio Viviani and the Nocturnal Hospitality Group, with partners Lanfranco Pescante and David Anderson. Chef Viviani is a chef, restauranteur, cook book author, on-air TV personality and became known after participating in “Top Chef” on Bravo and was voted Fan Favorite. Mole Y Abuela is his second collaboration with Nocturnal Hospitality Group, after Osteria, which opened the Italian-inspired concept last year, just up the road on Franklin Street. Mole Y Abuela has been described as Spanish cuisine with Southern American
flair and fusion. Many of the dishes are tapas and meant to be shared and served as soon as the dishes are ready from the kitchen, rather than all guests receiving their orders at the same time. The interior has been re-imagined with a vibrant flair of tile, wood and brick. The atmosphere is lively and it is a great spot for date night or a night with girlfriends. Currently, the restaurant is open for dinner service, and a limited menu and cocktails on the rooftop bar. With views of downtown Tampa, the rooftop will certainly be a popular gathering place. On the menu, the tapas of the Jamon & Cheese Croquettes were tasty and the Bacon-Wrapped Dates were a must-have. Anything wrapped in bacon and stuffed with Valdéon Blue Cheese is perfect for my palate. If you like shrimp, the Spot Prawn Crudo was delicious. The shrimps were lightly battered and serve on a bed
of olive tapenade. A favorite of the evening was the Seared Maine Scallops served on a bed of romesco, charred lemon butter, spiced pumpkin seeds and leeks. The Carne Asada with Mole Verde and Chile’s Salsa, was cooked to perfection and served with handmade tortillas so that a beef taco could be made, if desired. If you are looking for fish tacos, the whole fish is served for Pescado De Provision. A delicious finish was the Torta De Tres Leches, a sweet milk soaked sponge cake topped with Dulce De Leche and strawberries. The bar offers full service with wine, beer and spirits. A selection of hand-crafted cocktails including a delicious Pomegranate Caipirinha or the signature Mole Margarita, are on the cocktail menu. After dinner, head upstairs and have a night cap under the stars and enjoy the views from the rooftop bar. M
