Publisher’s Notes A Thankful Time of Year. The weather changes just a bit to start to enjoy the season outside. Be sure to take time to spend with family and friends, as we enter the hectic holiday season. Don’t miss the chance to support the great works of The Junior League of Tampa at their largest fundraiser, The Holiday Gift Market, at the Florida State Fairgrounds November 9-11, with more than 200 vendors. A great opportunity to get all your holiday gift shopping done. We had the opportunity to meet local shoe designer, Cedrick McDonald, who has taken Hollywood by storm. His high fashion shoe designs are patented and beautifully crafted in Italy. Women are swooning over his designs. In METROHome Tour, interior designer Enrique Crespo transforms a mediterranean home into a soothing coastal dream house for a local family. The before and after photos show the dramatic progression of the home. If you are thinking about a vacation, check out the two Getaways on Park City, Utah and Sonoma County, CA. Both of these articles offer great suggestions on what to do and where to stay, whether it’s a trip for the family, a romantic getaway or fun with the girls. A bit closer to home is a weekend escape to the Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota. Art lovers will enjoy all the images that adorn the lobby and halls, along with the extra special artistic touches in the guest rooms. Once again METRO showcases our annual Inspiring Women in Business. These women take care of their family, friends and their businesses, we wish them continued success in the upcoming year. Be sure to check out the three exhibitions going on at the Tampa Museum of Art themed Season of Love sponsored by The Vinik Family Foundation. Art takes on all forms and there is something for everyone with Patricia Cronin’s sculpture Aphrodite Reimagined, Yoyoi Kusama: Love is Calling and Robert Indiana: A Sculpture Retrospective.

Cirque du Soleil Returns To Tampa Bay with “CRYSTAL” — a breakthrough ice experience Always thrilling and captivating, Cirque du Soleil returns to the Tampa Bay area in time for the holidays. CRYSTAL, the first-ever on ice production by Cirque du Soleil, will be at the Amalie Arena for five days, from Wednesday, Dec. 19 - Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018. The unique arena production showcases synchronized and freestyle ice skating, alongside circus disciplines such as swinging trapeze, hand balancing on chairs and hand to hand. CRYSTAL fuses circus arts and the world of ice skating in a stunning new production, that will take the audience on a journey into a surreal world, where figure skating blends with acrobatics and aerial feats, on their new frozen playground. The ice skaters and acrobats perform with speed and fluidity, as they challenge the laws of gravity with never-before-seen acrobatics. Directed by Shana Carroll and Sebastien Soldevila, Crystal, the misfit heroine, takes the audience on an exhilarating tale of self-discovery, as she dives into a world of her own imagination. Feel the adrenaline as she soars through this surreal world to become what she was always destined to be: confident, liberated, and empowered. CRYSTAL invites the audience to suspend reality and glide into a world that springs to colorful life, with astounding visual projections and a soundtrack that seamlessly blends popular music with the signature sound of Cirque du Soleil.

Cedrick McDonald
A Sole Passion
Photos: DioBurto Photography
By Ronda M. Parag
Cedrick McDonald is a self described serial entrepreneur, who owns several businesses, but has found his passion designing and creating high heels. McDonald, born in Tampa and raised in New York, returned to the Tampa area about 10 years ago. Beginning his career as a hairstylist, McDonald believes beauty is the identifying factor, whether it is hair or shoes. In 2015, he applied for a U.S. patent on his innovative shoe design, that includes a snakeskin outsole encrusted with Swarovski crystals, on the bottom of
every shoe. After nearly a two year process, McDonald was granted a patent based on the unique style. While he has endured life’s challenges, he believes investing in himself and creating his own American dream. “I invest into me,” says McDonald. “I draw deep inspirations from fashion, life experiences and music.” The company motto is Live Life Through Your Soles and with a limited production, each of McDonald’s 13 designs are unique and desirable, and certainly make a statement to the women wearing them. The shoes are made to strict standards in Italy, and are available via his website, www.exoticsbycedrick.com. While he travels extensively, McDonald says that a few of his favorite places in Tampa include Maggiano’s Little Italy, Bern’s Steakhouse and Armature Works. He also loves to work out at LA Fitness and perhaps his greatest love is his daughter, Sarae, 7, who McDonald jokes is going on 27. He also likes shopping at Tampa Premium Outlet Stores and The Shops at Wiregrass in New Tampa. McDonald’s shoes are certainly red carpet worthy and celebrities are seeking out Exotics by Cedrick at the gifting suites everywhere, from the Golden Globes to the MTV Movie and TV Awards. A new release, the Swan Sandal, available in the SS 2019, is already being requested by stylists for Cardi B and Beyonce. “Whether you follow the trends or help set them, we all love to see what’s going on with them,” added McDonald. “We can all agree that we love fine shoes and the way they make us feel. I bring my artistic ability to every pair of shoes I create, helping to set the trends.”

The major fundraiser for the Tampa Museum of Art will stir the heart and celebrate 33 years of tradition and support for the arts in Tampa Bay, with Pavilion XXXIII, to be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Museum. The black tie gala is chaired this year by Leslie & Greg Minder and the presenting sponsor is PNC Bank. Both Leslie and Greg Minder are involved in real estate and have made a significant impact across Tampa Bay, with their development projects and community involvement. “Art takes you places that you would not normally go and it inspires your mind to wander and wonder,” said Leslie Minder. “We are so fortunate to have TMA in our community and in our hearts.” The theme for Pavilion XXXIII takes influence from the three exhibitions on display in the Season of Love, sponsored by the Vinik Family Foundation. “Each exhibition explores the theme of love at a different point in art history and, in so doing, contributes to the Museum’s mission of providing opportunities to discover ancient, modern and contemporary art,” said Museum Executive Director, Michael Tomor. Guests will enjoy cocktails, dinner and dancing, along with a live auction with art and travel experiences. The evening will also honor the generosity of patrons, Dr. Stephen & Marsha Dickey. “Marsha and I have been associated with the Tampa Museum of Art for over 20 years,” said Dr. Stephen Dickey. “I have served on the Board for over 10 years, as the treasurer for two terms, and now

New Menu Offerings at Élevage and Expanded Lobby Bar at the Epicurean Hotel There is a new menu at the Epicurean’s signature restaurant, Élevage, and a new space called The Lobby Bar inside the hotel. “The new space is beautiful, but, as always, the star of the show is the food available in both outlets; it’s classic, yet modern and showcases what our award-winning chefs do best,” said Kevin Scott, General Manager of the Epicurean. Élevage has unveiled a more concise menu that is an innovative marriage between the best of Southern hospitality, and French techniques created by Executive Chef, Chad Johnson. The menu says Nostalgia Meets Nouveau. The culinary team focuses on fresh, vibrant preparations that have a sense of familiarity with a twist of the unexpected, to create dishes such as the goat cheese and sweet potato agnolotti, a hand-made pasta filled with a mousse of goat cheese, roasted sweet potato, and pureed black truffles. The Lobby Bar offers a menu of burgers and many new additions, but the classic Homage to Bern’s steak sandwich has remained on the menu. It was a return to a magical evening of “new” Hollywood glam, as more than 30 models strutted the runway wearing more than 90 looks by designer Marc Bouwer, for the 9th annual CITY: Fashion + Art + Culture to benefit programs and education at Tampa Museum of Art. The interactive, fashionable evening included glam gowns, swimwear and amazing head pieces created by Bouwer. Bouwer is best known for dressing famous celebrities including Oprah, Beyonce, Shania Twain and Angelina Jolie. Eddie V’s provided delicious shrimp cocktail, beef tenderloin and mahi mahi bites, outside under the museum’s portico. Specialty Pink Lady cocktails and open bar kept the party going with a dance party, with music by DJ James King. Co-chairs for the 2018 event were Heather Van Nest and Eve Gloede, who wore stunning dresses by the designer. Tampa Bay METRO was a proud event partner. Photography: FotoBohemia, www.fotobohemia.com

Transforming Mediterranean Style Into A Soothing Coastal-Charmed Interior By Mary Lou Janson
D
ark colors, abundant wrought iron accents and ornate embellishments, defined the personality and interior design of the Westshore area home that attracted a family of five. The location was ideal, literally blocks from their former home, within the same gated community. Plus, the five-bedroom floor plan was a better fit for the family. In addition to the parent’s master bedroom and master bathroom, as well as individual office areas, the twin brother and sister, and younger daughter, would have their own personal bedrooms, plus an upstairs playroom that they

share. And the more open flow from the kitchen into the large living area and adjoining covered patio, complete with its own outdoor kitchen, created an ideal space for entertaining. What wasn’t a good fit was the more formal, and formidable, dÊcor. Without making any major structural changes, the densely decorated 5,915-square-foot, two-story interior space, has now been transformed into a place that is filled with lots of light and a sense of levity. Gone are the features that felt heavy and dense. The contrast is literally as dramatic as night and day.
The heavy-handed Mediterranean-style finishes, flooring and other touches, underwent a dramatic makeover that made the décor more modern, less busy and beautifully soothing. It’s a difference that interior design professional, Enrique Crespo, said is so palpable that it creates a sense of serenity. “The moment I step inside I immediately feel relaxed,” said Crespo, principal interior designer with Crespo Design Group. “There was a lot going on. We were going for a more coastal aesthetic.” It was a project that required more de-construction than re-construction and that followed a less-is-more philosophy.

“The colors are similar to the ones used in their previous house because that is what they are drawn to,” Crespo said. “Similar colors, but this is a much bigger house with more room to work with, so we were able to branch out a bit.”
Fortunately, the new owners had already collaborated with the Tampa-based Crespo on their previous residence, so they called on him once again to translate their tastes into the furnishings, light fixtures and wall and floor treatments of their current home, to make it more compatible with their lifestyle. “The colors are similar to the ones used in their previous house because that is what they are drawn to,” Crespo said. “Similar colors, but this is a much bigger house with more room to work with, so we were able to branch out a bit.” All walls were painted white with a slight tint of grey. Brightly colored tiles were replaced with oil-finished, French white oak, that was smoked to coax out and create an organic appearance. An elaborately carved mantle was removed and a simpler, but more striking, cast stone mantle installed in its place. With neutral shades now the norm, the interior is in perfect harmony with the light shades of the upholstery, cabinets and countertops that were part of Crespo’s vision. Walls now compliment, rather than compete with, the artworks displayed. And textures found on rice paper wallpaper and the marble kitchen island featuring a leather finish, add subtle, but distinctive, details.

The feeling is comparable to stepping into a high-end spa and the sensation is similar to living along a tranquil coast. Some structural modifications were made. An upstairs shower, in the master bathroom that was walled off except for an opening that was off to one side, felt so fully enclosed that one of the owners compared it to a cave. Two clear glass walls were installed making it look, and feel, much more spacious. Fortunately, the family was able to move in after most of the changes were made and the new mood made it feel more like home. “We wanted to get away from the dark colors and heavy Mediterranean features and create a tailored interior, added Crespo. Strengthening Your Pelvic Floor By Mary Lou Janson
Throughout the Tampa Bay area, state-of-the-art facilities and medical procedures are providing women of all ages, easier and more effective ways to repair, strengthen, and maintain their pelvic floors.
Need to map out nearby restrooms every time you shop, eat out or attend a concert? Dread coughing, sneezing, even laughing, for fear you will lose control of normal bodily functions and have an accident? Sense a bulge, pain or pressure in the vagina or rectum you never noticed before? These may be all be due to a condition that’s more common than most may realize, but is highly unlikely to come up in conversation — or even in discussions with medical professionals. One out of three women could benefit from treatment or surgery for these symptoms, but may be reluctant to seek help, opting instead to endure and cope. Fortunately, this is not a life-threatening problem, but it definitely impacts the quality of life of those who have it. The condition is called pelvic floor disorder. Both women and men have pelvic floor muscles, but if those muscles have been damaged, injured or weakened, especially in women, there may be consequences. Bowel and bladder movements could become more difficult to control, creating urinary or fecal incontinence. Organs can sag from lack of support, a condition known as pelvic organ prolapse. The good news is that these can all be treated and managed. The bad news is there may be a myriad of causes for these conditions. Among the contributing factors are normal stretching that accompanies vaginal childbirth and the absence of collagen, a component of connective tissue that decreases during menopause. Obesity or even lifting heavy weights while working out may be culprits. Diet can even play a role when irritants, such as caffeine and carbonated sodas, affect the bladder.
What isn’t at fault is the simple act of aging. Know where to go, who to talk to and what to do. There are treatments, exercises, procedures and surgical options that can have long-lasting, ongoing effects that provide relief as well as peace of mind. Typically the initial determination and detection can occur during an office visit with an urogynecologist, an obstetrician/ gynecologist specializing in pelvic floor disorders, a urologist, a gastroenterologist who treats the digestive system, or a primary care doctor. “Your first step is to talk to a medical professional. Speak up and tell them about these problems to determine your
best plan of action,” said Dr. Renee Bassaly, an associate professor, division chair and program director for Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and a surgeon at Tampa General Hospital (TGH). Dr. Renee Bassaly “Women generally don’t talk about this. We need to be better advocates for ourselves.” Results can be achieved within weeks with the right exercises or after a minimally invasive surgical procedure. “The majority of the time women will try conservative therapy but, depending on their condition, or if they see no improvement, they may wish to have surgery,” Bassaly added. “Find a specialist who has been trained and is board-certified to treat patients with this condition. That is all we deal with, so find a specialist.” A thorough exam by a pelvic prolapse specialist should include viewing the area in various positions to determine the right diagnosis, according to Dr. Jennifer Hayes, who has a private practice in Clearwater, the Visionary Centre for Women, and is board-certified in gynecology and gynecologic surgery. “It is a dynamic area that changes as we move. You want someone to see how it presents itself in various positions, who listens to the range of symptoms and gives you space to share what is going on. This is difficult for some to talk about,” said Dr. Hayes. Inserting a vaginal support device that can be painlessly custom-fitted on an outpatient basis, is Dr. Jennifer Hayes one alternative to surgery, but Hayes stressed it would be wise to consult a doctor experienced in prolapse work, who has a reputation for quality results and a willingness to listen to patients’ concerns and consider various solutions.

Improving muscles through neuromuscular re-education may involve working one-on-one with a physical therapist, who trains patients in proper techniques they can continue to perform on their own on a daily basis. The TGH Brandon Healthplex and TGH Medical Village, offer a variety of gentle exercises and non-invasive therapies on an outpatient basis by appointment weekdays. “Patients are often referred to us first for a less invasive approach to treating their symptoms. We reconnect your mind with your body,” said Heather Smith Cases, a TGH physical therapist for 14 years, who is preparing to work with pelvic floor disorder patients exclusively on a full-time basis. “We will teach you how to fix your problems. We give you the tools so that you can do this independently. The outcomes for our therapies are really good, but vary from patient to patient as to which treatment works best.” “You can live with this condition, but that would mean wearing adult diapers or pads and possibly not having a satisfying sex life,” said Heather Smith Cases.

Where Fresh Air Meets Fresh Opportunities Park City, Utah | By Patricia A. Vorbrich Westgate Park City Resort & Spa

hen the Florida heat and humidity become too much for our residents, a mountain getaway to cooler temps is in order. Park City, Utah, just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City, is a getaway from it all, in a town that has it all. Whether you are looking to experience hiking, biking, fly fishing or just relaxing and taking in the majestic mountain views, Park City is all that and more. I recently had the opportunity to experience the flying colors of fall in Park City, however, the winter snows on the mountain tops are just as heavenly in this special town. With more miles of biking and hiking trails than paved roads for motor vehicles, there is more to do than one can imagine. Westgate Park City Resort & Spa is one of Utah’s premier luxury destinations, located at the base of the Canyons Village Park City. The resort boasts 388 rooms in four buildings with three pools. Offering

year-round swimming in the indoor/outdoor pool and jacuzzis, a fitness center, children’s game room and the Serenity Spa, a tranquil mountain experience awaits guests. The annual Autumn Aloft Festival is a hot air balloon festival held in Park City. The event features 24 hot air balloons with weekend morning launch events, as well as a candlestick celebration set on Park City’s historic Main Street. A treat for visitors and locals alike. Visitors won’t want to miss a trip over to Deer Valley and the Stein Eriksen Lodge, Utah’s first five-star property. The wine collection at the Lodge tops 10,000 bottles and over $1 million dollars in value, one of the largest and most varied collections in the state of Utah. Wine Tours, Farm-to-Table Dinners and Northern California Fun Discover Sonoma County, CA | By Ronda M. Parag
Heidrun Meadery
O
n a recent trip to tour unique destinations in Sonoma, California, I was reminded that wine country, like a great vintage bottle, is best shared with loved ones. A romantic trip or a girls getaway, Sonoma County, with more than 425 wineries, has so much to discover. My four days of exciting events and activities started with lunch at Servino Ristorante in Tiburon, California. The views of San Francisco Bay were breathtaking, as the view of the city was off in the distance. The food was served family style, and we had Monterey Calamari, Salt Spring mussels, Heirloom Tomato salad, choice of two pasta dishes, and of course wine, including One Hope. Four unique wineries to visit include

K Squared, Moshin Vineyards, Heidrun Meadery and Petroni Vineyards. K Squared is a small boutique winery in Artisan Alley in the town of Windsor, owned by Andrew and Julie Moore, and known for their Russian River Pinot Noir. Moshin Vineyards began in 1989 and was the dream of Rick Moshin and his family, located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Today, the Moshin Vineyard has a unique 4-tier Gravity Flow Winery and controls 28 acres of grapes, mostly Pinot Noir. They specialize in small lot, hand-crafted wines. The tasting room is open daily and tours of the winery are by appointment. Heidrun Meadery is a great stop for sparkling meads — which is wines made from honey rather than grapes. Located

in Point Reyes Station, the wine was surprisingly good and refreshing. No reservations required and the tasting room is open every day. Petroni Vineyards began with famed restauranteur Lorenzo Petroni’s dream of creating wine from the grapes of his native Tuscany, and the prized Sangiovese Grosso clone in the Sonoma soil. In 1992, he found a 37 acre estate atop the Mayacamas Range and has created a paradise complete with a home, guest house and dining and tasting cave available for private events. The estate is known for red wines that rival the old world Italian wines, and 100 percent certified organic estate extra virgin olive oil. Tastings & Food Pairings are by appointment only. You are probably wondering, how am

I going to get all my wine home? Make sure to purchase a wine suitcase by VinGardeValise, and sold locally by reseller, FlyWithWine. Your wine will arrive home safely, and ready for you to share with friends and family. Other fun activities when tooling around Sonoma County include a stop for an authentic Italian ice or Soft Serve, or a combination of the two, called a split, at Amy’s Wicked Slush in Healdsburg. It is refreshing authentic Boston-style Slush owned by Amy Covin, who missed her Slush every day and opened the first Slush shack in Northern California. of their fresh, bloomy and aged cheeses. I would suggest hiring a tour company and possibly a caterer for group travel. Beau Wine Tours has experienced drivers that know how to navigate the narrow and winding roads, and offers several options for wine tours. Off The Beaten Path is available to create custom picnic lunches for small groups that are wine tasting, and available for corporate events, large reunions, and destination weddings. A great place to stay is the Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country, a rustic chic sanctuary set on 8 acres with 253 recently renovated guest rooms. The hotel brings a casual elegance to Wine Country with its earthy colors, textures and natural accents. Another hotel option is Vintners Inn, the only AAA Four Diamond resort in Santa Rosa,
CA. The California Green Lodging-certified resort sits on 92 acres of lush vineyards and beautifully landscaped grounds with courtyards and fountains. This fall, there will be 44 new deluxe Vineyard View suites, one even with an outdoor bathtub, along with a full-service spa and health club. Lighter and Artful Beach Fare WTR Pool & Grill |By Ronda M. Parag
WTR Pool & Grill, the waterfront restaurant located at The Godfrey Hotel & Cabanas Tampa, has launched new menus to match its latest grand renovations of the hotel and pool area. Crafted by Executive Chef Joe Garcia, the menus have a variety of beach fare dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. “The inspiration for the new menus was to elevate beach fare, while focusing on bringing in as many fresh Florida foods as possible,” says Garcia. “We wanted menus where people can eat and enjoy a day at the pool or bring the family, and eat a full meal while watching the sunset.” The new menu offerings include Seared Scallops, Salmon Tartare, Walkerswood Shrimp & Polenta, Linguine Frutti di Mare, Black Truffle Fries and more. “The most important changes we made are in quality,” says Garcia. “We are a scratch kitchen and prepare everything fresh. We have improved the quality of our proteins, or the heroes of the plate. We source as

much local Florida first product as we can, without compromising the level of quality that we live by.” Originally from Dallas, Texas, Executive Chef Joe Garcia began his culinary journey at a BBQ restaurant in Texas. After traveling and opening restaurants all over the United States, Chef Garcia settled in Tampa and worked previously as the Executive Chef at Grille 116. Executive Chef Garcia has over 20 years of culinary experience, with expertise in Latin and American Contemporary cuisine. He is best known for dishes like the Doughnut Burger and his Chocolate Soy Glazed Tomahawk Chop. His vision for the future of WTR is to make the restaurant the premier spot in Tampa to get an elevated casual dining experience on the water, complete with sunset views. M 7700 W.
