The Runway Shows Splendor of Santorini Energetic, vivacious and fun, Fashion Designer Zang Toi, will be in Tampa showcasing his Spring 2016 collection at the Tampa Museum of Art’s CITY fashion event on Saturday, Sept. 19. Bound for the Big Apple Chef Jeannie Pierola Performs at the James Beard House
Next month, Chef Jeannie Pierola and her team at edison: food + drink lab, will be headed to New York City to delight diners and guests at the famed James Beard House. On October 20, 2015, Tampa native Chef Jeannie Pierola pays tribute to her Spanish and Cuban roots and wields modernist techniques behind the stove. This one-of-a-kind Beard House dinner will showcase Pierola’s forward-thinking spin on indigenous Tampa cuisine, with offerings that only her curiosity can conjure up. Imagine starters of Cracked Conch Mojitos with Sugarcane, Muddled Mint and Finger Limes; Sea Urchin Flan with de Naranja with Candied Navel Orange and Sarasota Sturgeon Caviar; Yellowfin Tuna Tartare Picadillos with Foie Gras Torchons on Toasted Brioch. A Passion for Art Maureen and Doug Cohn Support Tampa Museum of Art
Maureen and Doug Cohn are pillars within the Tampa Bay art scene, as both private collectors and supporters. Tampa Community Unites for 7th Annual FARA Energy Ball Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating multi-system disease and the most common cause of inherited ataxia; 1 in 100 people are carriers of the FA Gene. What begins as difficulty with balance and coordination, progresses over a short period of time to a life altering loss of mobility, energy, speech and hearing, robbing children and young adults of the ability to live active and independent lives. In the pursuit of treatments and a cure for FA, the Tampa community will unite with scientists and patient families on September 17-19 at the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) seventh annual Scientific Symposium and Energy Ball Gala. At the symposium, guests will receive updates on progress in three new FA clinical trials. Wendy Ryan, ABC Action News Anchor, will emcee the event and Tod Leiweke, former Tampa Bay Lightning CEO and current National Football League COO, will chair the event with his wife Tara for the fifth consecutive year. There will be a live auction featuring exclusive getaways, cocktails and dinner, and a live performance by Southern Train. Funds from the event benefit FARA and the USF Ataxia Research Center. Last year, FARA funded over $4 million in drug development and clinical research worldwide. Jennifer Farmer, FARA Executive Director, stated, “When our generous donors, dedicated researchers, pharmaceutical partners and courageous individuals battling FA come together, we facilitate life changing research progress.”

RMG Helps Raise Awareness at Walk of Hope The inaugural Walk of Hope is slated to take place on October 3, 2015 at Cotanchobee Park in Tampa. The event, organized by RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association, is one of a dozen, one-mile walks taking place across the nation to raise awareness of the one in eight couples and more than 7.3 million women who struggle with having a child. Tampa resident, Jessica O’Conner, is spearheading the volunteer effort in Tampa Bay, with local sponsorship from The Reproductive Medicine Group (RMG) and The Law Offices of Robert T. Terenzio. 10th Annual Rays On The Runway When: June 24, 2015 Where: Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront
METRO magazine was once again proud to be a media sponsor for the annual Rays On The Runway to benefit the Children's Dream Fund. The Rays Wives hosted an outstanding event to raise funds to make dreams come true for seriously ill children. Guests enjoyed delicious hors d'oeuvres including a pasta station along with an open bar, as Tampa Bay Rays players met with fans and signed autograph baseballs. The Rays players, coaches, and their wives and girlfriends strutted the runway in the latest fashions from Dillard’s, along with eight very special dream models. Emcees for the evening were DJ Fresh and Emily Austen. A special treat on the runway was all the dream children singing an original song created by Marissa, “Dream Makers.” Marissa was diagnosed with leukemia in December 2013 and began singing and writing music to cope with her illness and treatment. A live auction of players’ baskets helped raise a record $130,000 for The Children’s Dream Fund. The evening concluded with dessert and champagne. The Bay Area Advisors hosted their 10th Annual Martinis for Moffitt to benefit the Advanced Prostate Collaboration at Moffitt Cancer Center. Presented by JCIII & Associates, more than 1,000 guests attended the annual event held this year at the Straz Center. The co-chairs for the 2015 event were Kostas Stoilars and Derek Busciglio. TV personality Meredith Censullo was the emcee. During the past nine years, BAA has donated more than $600,000 to Moffitt Cancer Center. Guests noshed on NOLA inspired food including baked oysters and crab cakes, along with a variety of martinis. The dance floor was packed with live music from a New Orleans band and beats from DJ Fresh. METRO magazine was a proud media sponsor.

Distinctive, distinguished and designed to take full advantage of the panoramic views afforded by its floor-toceiling and wall-to-wall windows, this Bayshore Boulevard residence instantly achieved iconic status when it was built in 2006. Herman recalls this was the first – and only – home she and her husband looked at when they made the decision to move to Tampa from Naples, Fla. They loved the location and its proximity to Tampa International Airport, sports and concert venues, upscale shopping and fine dining, but were debating whether to buy or build. “I knew this was the house that I wanted to live in. I was not interested in seeing anything else. I liked the contemporary feel of it. The architecture was exactly what we were looking for,” said Herman, an artist whose paintings are displayed throughout her home, along with sculptures and other artworks collected from worldwide travels. “The house has a character all its own. I just happen to live in it and own it.” Among the many appealing amenities are the antiqued French hardwood floors, soothing, neutral colors used throughout the interior, custom-built shelves and entertainment centers, a heated, saltwater pool, triple-paned hurricane-proof windows and a two-car, climate-controlled garage with a

While the home made an instant impression on her, what Herman learned about its construction is what really sold her. “We met with the builder and he gave us an hour-long presentation about how it was built, the quality of the materials used and the entire engineering and building process. There were infinite details that went into the building of this home,” Herman said. “We achieved all of the things that we set out to find in a home. We found the most unique house with the finest quality. The structure and interior speak volumes. There is a meditative serenity that you feel when you come into the house. A Legend Lost Serge Hochar passes on a legacy of winemaking excellence | By Kevin Pelley
T
he international wine community lost a legend last December when Serge Hochar died at the age of 75 in a swimming accident while vacationing in Acapulco, Mexico. Hochar helped bring his Lebanese winery, Chateau Musar, from obscurity to one of the world’s finest wine estates during his lifetime. Hochar started as a winemaker in 1959, taking over from his father, after studying at the University of Oenology in Bordeaux. Chateau Musar’s vineyards are planted with French varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache and Mourvèdre for the red wine, along with the indigenous Lebanese grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah for the white wine. The red wines from Chateau Musar are unlike any other wine in the world offering a stylistic combination of the red fruits, freshly tilled earth and herbaceousness reminiscent of Bordeaux with the gamey, meaty and spicy notes of a Rhone. The white wines are even bigger and served after the reds. The whites are golden hued, rich, high acid wines with flavors of citrus, stone fruit, honey and mineral with

a long dry finish. This unique white can age for decades and there are bottles at the Chateau that are over 60 years old. Chateau Musar is located in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, a mere 18 miles from Beirut. Amazingly, Serge Hochar persevered during the Lebanese Civil War that spanned from 1975-1990 and continued producing wine even when bombs and bullets were falling around Chateau Musar. This war-torn period of time destroyed virtually all of the domestic wine sales in Lebanon, forcing Hochar to sell his wines throughout the world. Hochar had the fortune of meeting acclaimed wine importer Michael Broadbent in 1979 at the Bristol Wine Fair, thus opening the UK market and eventually Europe. Today, the Chateau Musar wines are available on six continents and have gained international acclaim from many of the world’s leading wine critics. Hochar produced the wines of Chateau Musar in a natural style. Chateau Musar was the first producer in Lebanon to achieve organic certification for its vineyards. Hochar believed in allowing

the wines to speak for themselves by never fining, filtering or intervening in the winemaking process. The results, at times, were unpredictable with some amazing vintages and some funky, gamey and feral wines. All the vintages benefit from aging and possess the ability to improve in the bottle for decades. I had the pleasure of hosting a Chateau Musar wine tasting with Serge Hochar in October of 2013 at Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits. It was a true pleasure bringing this legend and maverick to the Tampa Bay wine community during this event. It is with equal enthusiasm that I welcome Serge’s son, Marc Hochar, to the Epicurean Theatre on Monday, October 19th for a seminar and lecture featuring a range of Serge’s wines. Jew’s menu favorites include the Asian chopped salad and The Med salad, that are influenced by his heritage and travels. A great starter is the Lager Cheese Fondue, where jar filled soft pretzels soak up delicious, sharp cheddar cheesy goodness. Be sure to also try the Cedar Key Clam Chowder filled with hearty potatoes, and clams sourced from Cedar Key, served with house made saltine crackers. he white subway tiles and hanging Edison bulb lighting create a modern and inviting feel to the latest addition to the dining scene in St. Petersburg. The tufted, high backed booths and open tables create a fun and festive atmosphere with direct views to the kitchen area. The bar offers a great list of craft cocktails that are listed by number. Guests actually have to read the list of ingredients to figure out what they like. A couple favorites include the # 3 ( prairie vodka, fresh raspberries and ginger) and #68 (high west rendezvous rye, luxardo cherry, fresh orange slice, peychauds, ginger beer). In addition, there are four wines on tap – two red and two white, along with two cocktails, and a nice wine list that was created by Executive Chef, Jeffery Jew.
