but in Tampa Bay it sometimes seems like summer all year long. The temperatures rise, kids are home and it is the ideal time to relax with family and friends, take a vacation or weekend getaway, and enjoy all the beauty of the area beaches. It’s METRO’s annual Summer Guide to Cool and we’ve found 40 places to discover, eat, drink and play. We also take a look at six old-time Florida attractions in Travel Back in Time – METRO’s Retro Guide to Old Florida. Support Feeding Tampa Bay and raise awareness and funds, to help feed those that are in need, by attending one of the Epic Chef Showdowns at the Epicurean Hotel Theatre. We had a chance to interview the designer, Angel Sanchez, and can’t wait for him to debut his 2020 designs at the runway fashion fundraiser for the museum. It comes so suddenly, that’s why I always keep a pencil and sketchbook with me. M: Who is your muse? S: Audrey Hepburn, my all-time favorite muse. M: What is your favorite fashion era and legendary contemporary fashion icon? S: The 50s – Golden Age of Haute Couture and Cate Blanchett… sophisticated, modern and intelligent. M: Fool proof fashion must have item? S: The classic, but necessary “little black dress.” M: If you could have been anything, other than a fashion designer, what would you have been? S: As a child, I wanted to be a painter or a contemporary dancer, maybe it has an association with freedom and expression. M: What makes the relationship between art and fashion critical? S: What is fashion if not wearable art, right? The meeting point between art and fashion is summarized in aiming at self-expressionism, without forgetting they are both part of the creative world. The runway at CITY 2019 will exclusively feature the Spring 2020 collection from Venezuelan Fashion Designer, Angel Sanchez. To celebrate his 30 years as a fashion designer, Sanchez, whose first runway show was in an art gallery in Caracus, Venezuela, will showcase his new collection in the
magnificent space at the Tampa Museum of Art. Sanchez describes his creations as feminine and elegant and avoids excesses to achieve a modern and clean look. METRO had a chance to speak with Angel Sanchez about his inspirations and expectations for CITY 2019.

Feel the Heat at the Epic Chef Showdown Tampa Bay chefs are heating up the kitchen this summer for the 5th Annual “Epic Chef Showdown” held in the Epicurean Theatre. Created by the Epicurean Hotel and Feeding Tampa Bay, the seven week competition is designed with a purpose to bring together culinary talents, local foodies, and community philanthropists to celebrate the common love of food, and raise awareness of the local issue of food insecurity. Participating local restaurants include: Ichicoro Imoto, The Mill, Mise en Place, Noble Crust, Oxford Exchange, Parkshore Grill, Red Mesa and Rooster & the Till. Each week, the event will be hosted by Chef Jeff Philbin of “MasterChef” fame. It works like this: two competing chefs will receive a mystery box of ingredients, and will be challenged to create two unique dishes under the pressure of the clock. When time is up, each dish will be judged

Scheduled to judge the competition this
year include: former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ player Vincent Jackson, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, WFLA’s Stacie Schaible and Ian Beckles from WDAE sports radio. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the meaningful relationships and conversations the event has created around the mission of hunger relief,” said Thomas Mantz, President & CEO of Feeding Tampa Bay. “Each and every one of us has a connection to food in some way, whether it be a favorite childhood memory, a time when your family pauses from the daily hustle and bustle, or – in the case of our amazing chefs – an art that you share with others. There are many reasons to celebrate food and the very life it gives us all. With the vision of a hunger-free Tampa Bay, we aim to create these memories and moments for hundreds of thousands of families across the Tampa Bay region.”

Stay Cool as Two Museums Showcase Contemporary Exhibitions Summer time is hot, so step inside to cool off at local museums on either side of the Bay. The Tampa Museum of Art presents Tableau and Transformation: Photography from the Permanent

The photography exhibition includes 50 photographs from the mid 1960s – the early 2000s, from the museums own permanent collection. The exhibition looks at how artists have used distinct darkroom effects and studio practices to create new narratives in photography. Artists such as James Casebere, Robert Cumming, Stephen Frailey, Sandy Skoglund, and William Wegman create constructed environments, often blurring the boundaries of truth and fiction in their images. Photographers Blythe Bohnen, Duane Michals, Arnulf Rainer, Lucas Samaras, and Cindy Sherman, examine the transformation of one’s self as a means to explore identity, gender, and place. “Many of the photographs featured in Tableau and Transformation have not been on view for 25 years,” said Joanna Robotham, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. “I am pleased to include a selection of works from Trenam Law’s holdings and to highlight the shared history of our two photography collections.” The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Frank E. Duckwall Foundation and Trenam Law.

Museum of Fine Arts St. Pete Develop a new appreciation for works with paper at the exhibition Above the Fold: New Expressions in Origami, at the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Petersburg. Traditionally thought of as children’s art projects, the amazing origami works, of the nine talented artists on display, will have you rethinking that. The 20 works use light, shadow, nature and even math and science, to elevate contemporary origami. The large scale installations and suspended pieces are pushing the medium of paper and paper folding. “Paper is a fascinating medium and we’re excited to present these brilliant contemporary works of art, in such an immersive way, that reflect how origami has evolved as an art form,” said Executive Director Kristen A. Shepard. There is also an interactive paper-folding area where museum guests can create paper cranes and other origami designs. Above the Fold is curated by Meher McArthur and the tour is organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Circle of Red at AdventHealth Members of the Tampa Bay American Heart Association’s Circle of Red (COR) enjoyed an engaging heart health event at AdventHealth’s Pepin Heart Institute. There were prevention tips from Dr. Davis — 80 percent of cardiovascular disease is 100 percent preventable, and more about the changing landscape of cardiovascular research in women by Dr. Lambert. A fact that COR Chair Debbie Lundberg shared — the AHA has funded more than $4.1 billion in research since 1949. The Junior League of Tampa Aims to Eliminate Diaper Needs The Junior League of Tampa’s Diaper Bank committee aims to eliminate diaper need in Hillsborough County, and has distributed over 100,000 diapers to local non-profit organizations in its inaugural year. Diaper need, the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy, impacts 1 in 3 US families. The cost of diapering is a heavy financial burden on families with babies averaging 8 to 12 diapers per day at a cost of $70 to $80 per month, per child. The urgency of this financial situation is compounded by the fact that there is no state or federal child safety-net program that allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers.

The Dynamic Duo Behind The Runway
Lauren Pepin and Nina Traviesa Co-Chair CITY: Fashion + Art + Culture 2019 Longtime friends and neighbors, Lauren Pepin and Nina Traviesa, have been conjuring up the dynamic details behind the fall fashion event of the season at the Tampa Museum of Art. Now in it’s 10th year, CITY: Fashion + Art+ Culture returns to the runway with Venezuelan celebrity designer, Angel Sanchez on Saturday, September 14, 2019. “Angel is the epitome of timeless elegance,” said Pepin and Traviesa. “We are honored to bring his art form to the Tampa Museum of Art for CITY 2019.” Lauren and Nina are both raising their children, as well as, supporting charities and projects they are passionate about. Lauren is loyal to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s foster family program, and oversees the philanthropic projects of the Pepin Family Foundation, benefitting the Pepin Heart Institute and the Pepin Academies. She has a passion for travel, healthy cooking, animals, and all things Tom Pepin, her husband of 10 years. She considers herself the CEO of the combined Pepin family, which consists of six children. “My husband and I are passionate about education and involve ourselves with organizations that believe in giving back to the community,” said Pepin. “The Museum offers endless free education programs to communities throughout the county, and I am thrilled to be a part of a signature Tampa event that raises funds to keep the momentum going.”

Nina has been involved with CITY since its inception in 2010. “My passion has always been the art of fashion,” said Traviesa. “My first fashion endeavor began as a design assistant to Angel Sanchez, where I was able to travel the world.” As a child, Nina learned to appreciate the beauty of art in the Miami galleries owned by her father. “Now as an adult, my husband Trey and I enjoy collecting the works of different artists, which is why we are enamored with the exhibitions and programs at the Tampa Museum of Art,” said Traviesa. Gatorland Sunken Gardens As one of the last of Florida’s roadside attractions, Sunken Gardens is a botanical paradise in the middle of a bustling neighborhood in Old Northeast St. Petersburg. The beginnings of the garden began when George Turner, Sr. bought six acres and drained a lake on the property and began planting tropical plants, hence the name “sunken garden” in 1903. With more than 50,000 plants and flowers, they are said to be some of the oldest in the region. The famous flamingos were brought back in 2016 with a new young flock of 20, joining the two remaining flamingos from 1956 and are always a fun sight to see. Home to a variety of marine animals, the Miami Seaquarium founded in 1955, is one of the oldest oceanariums in the U.S. Located near downtown Miami, visitors will see the stingray touch pool, flamingos, penguins and various fish, sharks, sea turtles, birds, reptiles, manatees and more. During the 1960s, the tv show Flipper and two movies staring Flipper were filmed at the Seaquarium. Today, enjoy up close experiences by swimming with dolphins or seals, or become a trainer for a day. It’s the only place where Lolita the Killer Whale performs with Pacific white-sided dolphins for daily shows. For extra fun, try out the newest ropes course adventure, Sharky’s Sky Trail with its 18 challenges on bridges, suspended ropes and other balancing obstacles.

It’s a place where mermaids have come to life since 1948. Located north of Tampa in Hernando County, the classic attraction of Weeki Wachee park includes water rides, animal shows, mermaid shows and manatee watching. The name “Weeki Wachee” was named by the Seminole Indians and means “little spring” or “winding river.” Former U.S. Navy man, Newton Perry created an underwater theatre and taught the beautiful sirens of the sea to swim with air hoses and perform aquatic ballets. Due to renovations, the wildlife shows may still be closed, so check online. The Riverboat cruise, Buccaneer Bay and the Mermaid show are open and fun for the entire family. The park is operated by Florida Park Service and reaches capacity early in the day, so plan to arrive when the park opens, especially on weekends. Buccaneer Bay is a waterpark that is fed by the spring with a year-round temperature of 74-degrees and offers up waterslides and a lazy river. Fun for the entire family.
Step back into peace and tranquility at the beautiful 250-acre Bok Tower Gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark. Dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1929, Bok Tower was created by former editor, author, and philanthropist, Edward William Bok in his winter home of Lake Wales, Florida. The Singing Tower is the focal point and sits on the highest point revealing a beautiful Reflection Pool. Built from marble and coquina, the Singing Tower is an architectural treasure with carved sculptures, custom iron-work, carvings and mosaic tiles, while the sounds from the 60 carillon bells are heard throughout the magnificent gardens. The gardens were designed by distinguished landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, using native and exotic plants. Kids can enjoy the Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden created specifically for them. Be sure to explore the Pinewood Estate nearby.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens Established in 1939 by newspaper man David Breed Lindsay and nursery owner Pearson Conrad, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is still family owned and operated today by Dorothy Tinney and her family, after her father Arthur C. Allyn purchased the gardens in 1971. The mission remains the same: to create an interactive experience between animals and nature in a relaxed environment. On the 10 lush acres, more than 200 animals call Sarasota Jungle Gardens home, including birds of prey: parrots, macaws, ducks, swans, snakes, small mammals, alligators, crocodiles, lizards and of course, the pink flamingos. One of the best things to do is to enjoy hand feeding the free-roaming flamingos. The daily reptile and bird shows that began in the early 70s are both educational and entertaining. t’s been nearly two years post-hurricane, and on a recent visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Caribe Hilton, I found the island of Puerto Rico welcoming and ready for exploration. For Tampa Bay residents, a direct flight on JetBlue or Southwest Airlines makes getting to San Juan so easy from Tampa International Airport. Inspired Italian Dining Meet Ava Executive Chef John Lister By Ronda M. Parag

or delicious, home-cooked Italian dishes and wood-fired pizzas, SoHo’s Ava continues to satisfy the palate for both savory and sweet dishes. Leading the kitchen at Ava’s is executive chef John Lister. Born and raised in Tampa, Lister moved to Charleston, South Carolina, after graduating from Plant High School, to attend Johnson Wales University. “I stayed for over 20 years, working and running numerous restaurants in the Lowcountry area,” said Lister. He’s back in Tampa and heating up the kitchen at Ava with his culinary talents. “Our newest menu item is rabbit Ragu with Potato Gnocchi,” said Lister. The meatballs are popular, along with the crispy pork belly for starters. Great for sharing are the cheese and house-cured meats served with grilled bread, pickled vegetables and accompaniments. The pizza oven continues to shine creating delicious pies including the simply delicious Margherita – tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and olive oil or my favorite – Funghi with cremini and shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onion, mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano and balsamic. The pastas are made in-house with a variety of noodles including fusilli, pappardelle and a house favorite –

To accommodate guest demands, the menu has a selection of vegan dishes. “Vegan cooking is challenging because I am not a vegan, but I still want to create tasty food and not just put a bunch of vegetables on a plate,” said Lister. “I want a composed plate that’s attractive, tasty and nourishing.” Lister says that he really enjoys cooking and eating slow cooked foods,
whether it’s a long braise Ragu or even a gumbo. His love of food and cooking is reflected in the dishes on Ava’s menu. Recently added on the dessert menu is the panna cotta - a vanilla thickened sweet cream served with fresh seasonal berries and white chocolate chip cookie crumble. Lister admits to a sweet tooth. “I love desserts and I love to think about what I would enjoy, and then have the fun of creating it,” said Lister. Sounds like a sweet way to end a delicious meal. M
