Publisher’s Notes Summertime is for Relaxing and Recharging
Cool off this summer with ideas in our annual Summer Guide to Cool. From the beach to museums and activities in between, METRO has discovered some outings to keep the kids occupied, so they won’t spend too much screen time inside. Get out there and enjoy all the parks, sports and cultural museums throughout the Tampa Bay area. We’ve also included some great restaurants and bars to satisfy the taste buds and quench the thirst, with stunning waterfront views. Summers are great for escaping with the family and whether you stay local, hop on a plane or drive, we’ve got a few recommendations. The JW Marriott at Grande Lakes in Orlando offers so many activities that the kids won’t even want to come home after spending time in the lazy river pool. A recent trip to Mexico included a stay at the all-inclusive Riu Dunamar. The brand new hotel in Costa Mujeres is family friendly and offers an excellent value. Key West holds a special place for me, as I proposed to Ronda in Key West, nearly 31 years ago. We’ve gone back many times through the years. Overlooking the marina on Stock Island, The Perry Hotel is a new boutique hotel that offers great service, dining and amenities. In METROHome Tour, we feature a beautiful Channelside condo that Gary and Josephine Schaaf put their signature touch on, and they call it their “Castle in the Clouds.” While the social season does slow down in the heat of summer, METRO is proud to support several charitable events. We hope to see you at Martinis for Moffit, Rays On The Runway, Celebrate Sinatra, The FARA Energy Ball and CITY. Enjoy,

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa Makes A Major Impact By Ronda M. Parag
Set to become a premier destination resort in Tampa, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa announced a nearly $700 million expansion, making the Tampa location one of the largest casinos in America. The centerpiece of the expansion includes a new 15-story hotel. Once the new tower is complete, Seminole Hard Rock Tampa will have nearly 800 guest rooms, including 79 new suites. For VIP high rollers, the top floor of the new hotel will feature a private gaming parlor, with exclusive check in and private elevators to the rock star suites. Plans are underway for three new outdoor swimming pools, with a new outdoor Pool Grille bar and restaurant with 120 seats. For those that love to be pampered, a new Rock Spa & Salon will open in the new hotel tower offering luxurious services. Next fall, a new Italian restaurant will open to create a fine dining trifecta, along with Council Oak Steaks & Seafood and The Rez Grill. “The upscale design and collection of amenities are a great addition to the property and complement

what Tampa Bay already has to offer,” said Lupo. “Providing new experiences with more gaming, 550 more rooms, three new restaurants, a 20,000 square foot Spa and our new Event Center, should lengthen the average stay of the Tampa Bay visitor to engage with all of the activities the region has to offer, much like Las Vegas.” To showcase concerts, conventions, trade shows and private events, the property will be constructing a 30,000-sq. ft. Seminole Hard Rock Event Center, to elevate music and entertainment programming. Six new retail shops will join the existing two retail outlets. “With a record number of tourists – over 116 million – traveling to Florida in 2017 and the Seminole Tribe’s commitment to Florida with expansions in Tampa and Hollywood, we certainly will be proud to see that trend continue in the future,” said Lupo. M: Who are some of your favorite women that you have designed for? B: One of the most memorable was Angelina Jolie. I created that white satin slip dress that she wore for the Oscars. Jolie was coming out from her wild child days and into this role as a philanthropic woman. It really put me into another fashion league. I also did seven videos with Shania Twain and created that signature hooded leopard coat and travel case in the desert video, That Don’t Impress Me Much. I’ve great memories of working with Whitney Houston creating her wedding dress, maternity clothes and outfits for her world tours and videos. Currently, Beyoncé is great to work with. I did that white sequin floor length gown for her concert for World Humanitarian Day. I love working with Emily Blunt. She is so down to earth. M: What is a typical day? B: I’m really a late night owl, so mornings can give me trouble. My dog wakes me up and is my alarm clock. I have a green shake, as I’m a vegan. I walk to the subway and go down to my office, where I spend the day designing and seeing clients. I’m also working on a digital art collection. I studied art in school, not fashion. I photograph models and things on the street and then re-color and digitize. Most are abstract faces and landscapes. M: Where is your favorite place to relax?
Marc Bouwer A Designer For New Hollywood Glamour
B: I’m a beach bum and love the outdoors and animals. I like The Pines (FIP - Fire Island Pines), as there are no cars and dogs are allowed on the beach. I can leave all my troubles behind. I also really like the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas. It is close and private. M: What are a few of your favorite spots in Tampa Bay?

CITY, the 9th Annual Fashion Fundraiser for the Tampa Museum of Art, will showcase the designs of New York’s celebrity fashion designer, Marc Bouwer, who has created stunning gowns for Beyoncé, Oprah, Shania Twain, Angelina Jolie and more. METRO had a chance to chat with Marc, who grew up in South Africa and moved to New York City after winning the South African Vogue Young Designers Award, and was a protege for Halston, before starting his own company.

The DeBartolo Family Animal Shelter rendering: Thomas Everett Lamb Design & Development, Inc.
A Love For Animals Plans Announced for The DeBartolo Family Animal Shelter By Ronda M. Parag The DeBartolo family considers their pets as members of the family and have long supported animal causes throughout the country. Recently, the DeBartolo family has made a significant contribution and will have the naming rights of the new animal shelter that is scheduled to begin construction in the Spring of 2019, for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. “The DeBartolo family is passionately committed to our community and, because of our personal love for animals, it seemed only fitting to support the construction of a larger and improved shelter to serve Tampa Bay’s homeless pets,” said Lisa DeBartolo, Executive Vice President of DeBartolo Holdings, LLC. “The DeBartolo Family Animal Shelter will undoubtedly provide hope for the animals in our midst needing care and comfort.” The Humane Society of Tampa Bay has cared for Tampa’s homeless animals for more than 100 years. “We have done an incredible job of keeping our animals comfortable and safe in a building that is half a century old,” said Sherry Silk, CEO of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. “But it’s time to do better. Tampa Bay’s homeless animals deserve so much more and we intend to give it to them. In addition to doubling our current capacity, our new shelter will have central heating and air, isolation space to contain illness, and nursery accommodations for under aged puppies and kittens.”
Community support is needed to reach the total funds required to build the new shelter. The Humane Society has currently raised $8.6 million towards an $11 million price tag to construct the new 41,000 square foot shelter. Sisters, Lisa and Nikki DeBartolo will be the Honorary Chairs for the black-tie 2018 Tuxes & Tails event, to be held on October 13, 2018 at the Tampa Convention Center. The evening brings together animal lovers and community leaders for a beautiful evening to raise funds for The Humane Society of Tampa Bay. “Our family will gift our name and support to the construction of a new, state-of-the-art shelter to serve our community’s animals in need,” said Lisa DeBartolo. “We hope our friends and neighbors in Tampa Bay will join us in this worthy cause.” Eddie DeBartolo

The 60th annual Tampa Bay Heart Ball embraced the theme: the HeART of the Possible; all guests were asked to consider what a future would look like without heart disease and stroke. The night was filled with spectacular auction items, powerful stories and hope — hope that the American Heart Association will find a cure for heart disease and stroke. Co-chaired by Todd and Karen Wanek and Ken and Jenny Jones, the 2018 Heart Ball raised a record-setting $2.5 million. Special guest, former Vice President Richard B. Cheney, answered questions about his heart disease journey in an interview led by Dr. Debbie Rinde-Hoffman — medical director of Tampa General Hospital’s heart transplant program — and moderated by Mr. Cheney’s former chief of staff and the chair of Ground Works Solutions, Kathleen Shanahan. The event concluded with a lively after party and warm welcome to the 2019 Heart Ball chairs, Paul and Rose Reilly. Tampa Bay METRO was a proud sponsor of this event. PHOTOS:

Bern’s Winefest No. 21 VIP & Grand Tasting When: Sunday, April 22, 2018 Where: Haven, South Tampa There are few wine tasting events in the Southeast that can rival the quality of food and wine that is presented at Bern’s VIP & Grand Tasting. The sold-out VIP & Grand Tasting offered a rare opportunity to taste more than 200 top-rated wines paired with culinary delights from Bern’s Steak House, Haven, and the Epicurean Hotel outlets, Élevage and EDGE. It was the perfect way to spend a spring afternoon. VIP guests were welcomed into the Grand Tasting with a crisp glass of Dom Perignon paired with select caviar for a delightful entrance. The Grand Tasting delivered a spectacular selection of cheeses in the Lounge du Fromage. Chocolate Pi Patisserie outdid themselves with a selection of truffles, macaroons and other sweet delights. Inspired by Bern’s Dessert Room, the main entrance to the Grand Tasting had an elevated grand piano with Kenny playing. Above the piano was a disco pig that spun around and reflected throughout the room. The highlight of the Grand Tasting was the band Electric Avenue, that got the dance floor packed with their high energy 80s music and performance. There was literally no more room and it was a fun way to wrap up Winefest. Guests also bid at the Winefest Silent Auction on wines donated by wineries from all over the world. Proceeds from the auction benefited the Bern Laxer Scholarship Fund. The fund awards a $10,000 scholarship each year, through the James Beard Foundation to assist students who are interested in a career in culinary, hospitality management or viticulture. ary and Josephine Schaaf had high hopes about making their next home a highhigh-rise in Tampa’s Channel District. Their search for rooms with stunning views of downtown and the surrounding waterfront ended, when they closed on a ninth floor condo early this year, finalizing the deal while far away in Hawaii. Timing seemed comfortable as the lease on their former residence wound down, leaving them weeks from the time they closed, to when they could move in. With just a few changes, the 1,927

square-foot-space would become much more than a place for Jo to hang her fashionable collection of hats; it would be a social center for guests to wine, dine and unwind, as well as, the Schaaf’s own unique retreat or, as they like to call it, “T “The Schaaf Castle in the Clouds.” Gary, as the managing shareholder of the law firm of Becker & Poliakoff’s Tampa office, supervises the firm’s business litigation practice. Jo is a real estate agent with Christie’s International, who represents residential properties in Florida and Hawaii, where they have a second home.

Before they could move into their new Florida residence, both agreed all it needed was some updated hardware and freshly painted cabinets, however, transforming the Ventana condo into a castle turned-out to be a bit more complicated and time-consuming than anticipated, in order to make the interior more modern, with all new finishes, appliances and fixtures. For instance, everyone always gathers in the kitchen, but the existing space wasn’t set up for a sit down meal. Guests can now congregate comfortably seated around the large, quartz countertop that stretches across opposite ends of the kitchen. “I know that the kitchen is an essential point for entertaining friends and family,” said Laura Asay Jacianis of Laura Asay Design. “It needed to be over the top but also functional.” Laura also helped the Schaafs design former homes in Safety Harbor and Orlando. The home improvement to-do list expanded, growing from demolition to renovation, then installation and decoration. One bedroom became a combination office, wardrobe closet and ladies lounge for Jo. A non-weight baring wall was added outside of the master bedroom to create an alcove for a favorite chair. And both bathrooms were completely gutted. ”They got this job done in 30 days. It should have taken six months,” said Jo, referring to the construction and interior design process. The dream team that avoided disaster by making everything happen faster, was Steve Orlando, the general contractor, and Jacianis. “I was on vacation when I received a message from Jo,” said Orlando, president of Residential Design Corp. “She said they had bought the condo and needed everything done in four weeks. Fortunately, I am extremely organized, have access to really good subcontractors and work with an excellent assistant. We got it completed and got them in.”

The only elements untouched were the wood floors that the Schaafs previewed and approved, before the former owners had them installed. Additions included an accent wall created from recycled paper products painted with white lacquer, that serves as a backdrop for a larger-than-life photo of the couple that was taken in Hawaii by a friend. The wall helps to guide the eyes of visitors entering the condo beyond the kitchen and through to the floor-to-ceiling windows, open floor plan and striking, stylish formal dining and living rooms. “Jo is easy to work with and
understands there is a design process,” Jacianis said. “I can take her ideas and fine-tune them to what she is looking for. When I walked the space with her to hear her ideas, I knew how to expand on those.” The contemporary design combines elegance with an ease that looks luxurious, as well as livable. The interior mixes custom pieces, furniture the couple already owned, plus personal mementos and treasured items from worldwide travels, as well as, from their home-awayfrom-home, Hawaii. “It is very glamorous but it is a very welcoming space to be in,” Jacianis added. A schedule of activities also offers dive-in movie pool parties and other poolside activities. Other family fun includes tennis courts, bocce ball, sand volleyball, arcade room, or riding around the expansive property on a surrey bicycle. A
recent visit to Cancun, Mexico brought me to what many are calling the next tourist destination in Mexico, Costa Mujeres. The resort is located an easy 21 miles from the Cancun International Airport and 11 miles from downtown Cancun. The Nexus Tour driver mentioned there will be at least 10 new resorts opening up in the next five years. RIU Hotels & Resorts opened up the classic hotel, Riu Dunamar in December, 2017 with 740 rooms and on the adjacent property, the Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, is scheduled to open in November, 2018. While the 5-star resort does have a large number of rooms, the scale of the property with the freshly painted white, five-story buildings, does not seem imposing. Located on the white sand beaches of Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women), the beachfront property offers stunning views of the Caribbean blue waters and a morning sunset. Off in the distance, almost directly across from the property, is Isla Mujeres, a laid back and tranquil island that can be visited on a day-long excursion from the tour company located on-site. The

kids might enjoy the off-site excursion to nearby Chac Moc Chuc Lagoon, to search for alligators and boat through the protected mangrove areas. The 24-hour all inclusive property offers 11 options for eating and drinking, along with room service too. The main restaurant “Isla Mujeres,” offers a buffet option for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Additional specialty restaurants don’t require reservations and are first-come, first-serve that include Italian, Asian, Fusion and a Steak House. The sports bar is open 24 hours. Perhaps the most fun is meeting people at the two swim-up bars, Tequila and Mezcal. The friendly bartenders serve up a tasty margarita, daiquiri or other speciality drinks from the cocktail menu. Guests have the choice of lounging or taking part in the afternoon activities around five swimming pools, with a separate children’s pool. There are plenty of sun loungers, umbrellas and towels poolside. Additional lounging chairs and shade cover are available on the beach too. If you want to keep up with an exercise routine, there is a gym and group fitness activities including

If you can’t turn it off and feel the need to check email or social media, the complimentary WiFi connects throughout the guest rooms and hotel common space. Kids age 4-7 and age 8-12, can enjoy RiuLand that offers daytime programs and entertainment, while parents can relax and re-charge. The Splash Water Works is guaranteed to bring laughs and smiles, sliding down one of five slides that empty into a sparkling pool. ey West is filled with characters, and on a recent visit, it’s the people that make this destination a great place to escape. Of course, having a uniquely designed boutique hotel to call home for a few days, doesn’t hurt either. The Perry Hotel Key West is a 100room hotel at Stock Island Marina, that is just over a year old and offers great hospitality from the moment of arrival. A quick 10 minute drive from the Key West airport, or an 8 hour drive from the Tampa Bay area, The Perry Hotel is made for the traveler who likes a bit of luxury and all the amenities of a full-service hotel. Upon check-in, guests are offered a glass of crisp, bubbly champagne. The hotel is pet friendly and offers a waterfront swimming pool, outdoor fire pits, and two delicious dining options – Matt’s Stock Island Kitchen and Bar and Salty Oyster Dockside Bar and Grill. Chef Kalen searches for only the finest ingredients to prepare delicious dishes with fresh fish, oysters, shrimp and lobster. Don’t miss his fresh-made daily ceviche, crab

For boaters, the hotel overlooks Stock Island Marina Village, that has 220 slips and offers direct ocean access, along with local artists’ studios, dog parks and a community garden. The property and room design showcases the industrial maritime heritage of Stock Island and its working shrimp and fishing boats. Throughout the hotel is artwork from local artists including Key West artist and sculptor, Daniel Siefert and paintings and photographer, Leo Gullick. The rooms are sleek and simple with a nod to the marina location. The wood-paneled headboards and cool, crisp interior creates a warm space complete with an oversized private balcony that calls for lounging and relaxing, with a stunning view of the yachts and sailboats docked behind in the marina. If you are looking to get out on the water for adventures, the hotel partners with many outdoor recreation companies.
