Publisher’s Notes Heat Up Your Summer With A Little Cool

The temperatures are in the 90s, and it is easier to stay inside during the day, but we still live in paradise and we’ve found some great inside and outside activities to have some fun, in METRO’s annual Summer Guide to Cool. For the adventurer, check out iFly in Tampa and experience flying without having to jump from an aircraft. Another option is the zip line course in Oldsmar at Empower Adventures Tampa Bay, that will satisfy the most adventurous in the family. Watching a sunset at one of the Bay area’s roof top bars, is always a satisfying way to end the day, or enjoy a day at one of the area pool parties. Everyone wants a little R & R during the summer and nothing is better than a road trip to South Florida. From the W Fort Lauderdale to the Marriott Stanton South Beach Hotel in Miami, each hotel offers a great place to celebrate the sun, sand and water. If you are a foodie, make plans to attend Omni’s Amelia Island Plantation’s Fish to Fork weekend event next year. We attended this year and give you a glimpse of the event in Foodie. A return to their childhood roots brought Drew and Kerri Hudgins back to Davis Islands and a friendship and partnership with Chancey Design Partnership, who created a stunning new home in METROHome Tour. The design and interior is simply spectacular. Relax and find a little down time during the Summer, and get ready for some great charity and social events. METRO is proud to support Bay Area Advisors’ Martinis for Moffit and Children’s Dream Fund Rays On The Runway. Hope to see you at these upcoming events.

Enjoy,

METRO: Tell us about your brand and your thoughts behind producing these “art & fashion” events. SUSANNE BARTSCH: My brand, like any is really about my eye and my taste. I’m not really doing anything I haven’t always been doing. I’m interested in a certain mix, which I guess results in its own flavor, like any recipe does. But I’ve always been interested and always been selling art and fashion. M: To keep current and to continue to push the boundaries, where do you find inspiration? SB: I think keeping current is really just about keeping your eyes open to what’s around you. I also move in

Bartsch’s career including designs by Alexander McQueen, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood, Zaldy, and the Blondes. CITY, the annual fashion fundraiser for the museum, will take a departure from the traditional fashion runway show and with the influence of Bartsch create a fashion “happening.” METRO had a chance to chat with New York City’s famed event producer and “Queen of the Night,” Susanne Bartsch, about her career, inspirations and future.

many different circles and age groups. I definitely am always thinking about what is modern. I like things that are different and things are usually the next big thing after they’ve been the next weird thing. I like them when they’re the weird thing. M: What can guests expect at CITY this year? SB: An interactive presentation of some of my favorite up and comers from New York. Everyone I am bringing is an independent designer, with very singular visions. There will be performance art hosts who work in the realm of “Self Couture,” who will be mixing and mingling with the audience, and I am inviting a few designers to show their clothing styled together and with those of other designers. Since my parties are always about a mix, I thought it would be interesting to reflect that in the show. M: What is next for Susanne Bartsch? SB: The main thing being the documentary, which is currently making the festival circuit. I’m working with Bloomingdale’s on a sort of pop-up bazaar, doing a book with Francois Nars. I’m also trying to develop my line of couture eye lashes. My Follies Cabaret/Show is going really well, and I am working on going on the road with it and making it bigger. And I’ve been spending a lot of my personal free time being a good old fashion Swiss Frau and making pies. I’ve connected with my joy of baking and making onion pies and peach pies, and all kinds of pies. So, who knows maybe I’ll give Patti LaBelle a run for her money with Bartsch Pies. But come what may, I love the business of bringing people together, creating events and platforms for people to express themselves. For the complete interview with Susanne Bartsch, visit www.tampabaymetro.com.

The Last Sports Car You May Ever Need

The newly re-designed second-generation Panamera continues to offer the sleekness of the Porsche brand, but the roominess and comfort of a sedan, with four seats. By re-shaping the rear and lowering the roofline, the car resembles a four-door 911. In addition to the exterior changes, the transmission and interior have also been modified. The four-door, four seater is roomy and comfortable, and has the engine in the front, that will satisfy and deliver the need for speed. The new generation offers five models — the Panamera and Panamera 4, each with 3.0-liter turbocharged V6; the Panamera 4S with 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-6; Panamera Turbo with 4.0 twinturbocharged V8; and the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid with a 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V6 and electric motor. The Panamera also features rear axle steering. A sleek new feature includes 4-point LED daytime running lights and LED taillights with 4-point break lights. The interior has been restyled to be centered around the driver, but the passengers enjoy the creature comforts that are all Porsche. The steering wheel has multiple controls and the center console offers direct touch access. When first test driving the Panamera, it was a bit overwhelming with all the touch screen technology. The dash analog tachometer is flanked with two screens and five gauges. The one side shows a large navigation map, so getting directions will be a breeze. The personalization options available on the interior can truly be customized to your taste, from the leather seats to wood or aluminum accents. A really nice feature is the 4-zone automatic climate control so each person can adjust the air or heat. The seats have the option of blowing cool or hot air on your back for added comfort.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Opens a New Land

AVATAR Director and Cast of the movie attend the grand preview and dedication ceremony of Disney’s newest creation – “Pandora - The World of Avatar”

It was a day of celebration inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as the long awaited Pandora – The World of Avatar opened, transporting guests to a new land that is 4.4 light years away from Earth. The new land is exotic and breathtakingly beautiful on 12-acres inside Animal Kingdom. Joining The Walt Disney Company, Chairman and CEO, Bob Iger, for the official grand preview and dedication ceremony, was James Cameron and the cast of Avatar, including actress Sigourney Weaver.

Inspired by director James Cameron’s AVATAR film – Pandora – The World of Avatar is designed as a planet, where guests can visit and create their own adventures. Inside the created magical land, there are two attractions – Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. The Avatar Flight of Passage is an incredible flight simulation where riders explore the beautiful world of Pandora on the back of the banshee. The multi-sensory journey is worth the wait in line with the feeling

of wind, water and scents experienced while soaring up and down through the air. After the exhilaration of soaring across the beautiful lands of Pandora, try the serene and calming, familyfriendly Na’vi River Journey. beachfront condominium requiring a major makeover, prompted Drew and Kerri Hudgins to first contact the founders of Chancey Design Partnership nearly three decades ago. Acting on the recommendation of a

mutual friend, the couple reached out to Walton and Sandra Chancey for guidance on gutting and re-constructing their Treasure Island home. Immediately upon meeting the architect and interior designer, the Hudgins knew they had found the right

firm — and the right folks — for the job. “We clicked. We talked for three hours during that first meeting,” Kerri recalled. Both personal and professional relationships between the families have continued to flourish throughout the years.

Multiple homes owned by the Hudgins have since benefitted from the handiwork of the Chanceys. Design projects range from a lakefront home described as a “funky farmhouse,” to the Hudgins Law Firm in Zephyrhills, where Kerri works as the office manager and Drew, an attorney, specializes in personal injury cases. That’s not to say it’s strictly business when they get together. The couples have shared worldwide travels, tailgated at their mutual alma mater, Auburn University, admired, and acquired, art by South American painter, Sebastian Spreng, and gathered for birthday, graduation and holiday celebrations. Familiarity and friendship have been a boon to their business dealings. Gone is the guess work that architects and interior designers typically face when drawing plans and drafting proposals. Instead, the added insight into their clients’ preferences and personalities encouraged creativity and customization. “Walt and Sandi are so talented, individually as well as together,” said Drew. “And they know us so well that they know exactly what we want.” The latest residential collaboration closely connected the Hudgins to their roots while serving as a catalyst to bringing them literally, closer to the Chanceys. A search for a waterfront home on Davis Islands a decade ago, not only brought Drew back to the area where he grew up, but also provided a view of Kerri’s childhood home overlooking Bayshore Boulevard from their new backyard. The move ensured their son Max would follow in his parents’ paths to the same public schools they attended. And the address placed the Hudgins on the same street as the Chancey family. When Drew and Kerri eventually decided it was time to demolish and replace that nearly 70-year-old residence, they naturally turned to their longtime friends, and now neighbors, the Chanceys. It was familiar territory for the Chanceys, who previously built five

other new houses nearby and renovated four more. The stunning three-story home finished last fall, is similar to others designed by Walt, that the Hudgins came to know and love, while visiting the Chancey’s former vacation getaway in the Florida Panhandle community of WaterColor. “We design for our clients, whether they want something traditional or ultramodern. I designed the first two homes in WaterColor and knew that Drew and Kerri loved that architectural style,” Walt said, describing the Davis Islands property as rooted in English Caribbean architecture, defined by big overhangs, lots of porches and a corrugated metal roof. Two floors rise above a 2,600-squarefoot concrete base featuring eight-foot high ceilings. That extra headroom within the enclosed, ground level floor easily accommodates cars, camping gear and a golf cart, plus provides additional entertainment space for the frequent friends and family gatherings the Hudgins host. A key characteristic that the former house lacked were abundant, unobstructed waterfront views. By elevating the living space and providing unimpeded vantage points from windows, glass doors, porches and a free-flowing design connecting the kitchen to the dining area, main living room and master bedroom, practically every room overlooks the water.

Sandra knew Drew’s signature phrase, “water, water, water,” was a mantra referring to the power of water to invigorate both mind and body. While Walt optimized waterfront views throughout the interior, Sandra cleverly incorporated Drew’s phrase into the tiled shower wall of the master bathroom. She also integrated new, antique and salvaged elements, like river-recovered Georgia pine, for flooring, finishings and furnishings to reflect the natural beauty of the bayside lot and create a casual, comfortable and cohesive look. Family heirlooms include a handcarved canoe created by Kerri’s great great uncle in 1908, that is suspended from the ceiling of the family room and a grand piano her father played that is prominently displayed in the foyer. “Because we are an architecture and interior design firm, it was extremely important to respect and follow the architectural vocabulary inside to reflect the outside,” said Sandra, noting that the siding on the exterior also lines the walls of the foyer and complementary colors are used indoors and out. The emphasis on water is expressed throughout the interior decor in various ways, from the blue-hued bases of table lamps, to the water colors featured in original art that is part of the Hudgins’ private collection. “Water, water, water. That is what the spirit of the house is,” Sandra added. M

The Beach Life. Renewed. The Newly Renovated W Fort Lauderdale| By Ronda M. Parag

F

ollowing a recent renovation of nearly $55 million, the new and refreshed W Fort Lauderdale is the ideal escape for a sun and fun weekend. The renovations include new décor in the guest rooms, suites and residential suites with new furniture, light fixtures, flooring in a soothing palette of ocean blues and rose gold accents. The new décor designed by Meyer Davis Studio, along with the W Brand’s global design team, stays true to the hotel’s waterfront location, offering stunning views of the ocean and Intracoastal. With unique layouts, many of the rooms and suites have oversized balconies and expansive windows showcasing the spectacular views. Located directly across from the Atlantic ocean, the hotel offers both great spots for sunning under a beach umbrella on the sand, or at the rooftop WET deck

pool. The WET East now offers new sleek loungers, umbrellas and day beds. Relax and enjoy a cocktail and lunch at the full-service poolside bar. The Living Room (also known at other resorts as the lobby), was updated to allow the pool’s reflection down the walls along with new bright blues and crisp whites, to reflect the light on the furnishings. Mix in metallic accents and the Living Room shimmers at night. The Living Room is a great spot for guests to sit and relax and feel right at home and order a bite to eat from the select menu. Each week the W Fort Lauderdale has a nightly line-up of entertainment in the Living Room. Monday kicks off with hand and arm massages by Bliss Spa technicians and guests can create a personalized organic body scrub. The bar serves up tasty crafted cocktails and is certainly a place for

guests and locals to mingle. Tuesday is Bollywood Night, with complimentary henna designs and Wednesdays feature artists painting live throughout the evening. On Thursday, the DJ spins tunes that are selected by guests in Off the Wall Thursdays. A great place to kick off the weekend with complimentary cigars, mojito and rum specials and a bit of Latin music is on Friday, with Heat Wave. Saturdays feature a live DJ with a throwback to the 80s and Sundays are wrapped up with live jazz in Saxxxy Sundays. Dining options include Stephen Starr’s STEAK 945 and a new SUSHI Bar with its menu created by Sushi Chef, Shuji Hiyakawa, a protégé of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Later this fall, James Beard nominee, Stephen Starr, will add a new restaurant allowing guests to dine outside with ocean views. M
