Also, meet Dan Bavaro and discover the flavor of Italy in downtown Tampa at his Italian restaurant, serving all hand-made pastas, pizzas and delicious cannoli and tiramisu. In METROHome Tour, a couple and their children have found the perfect home in a hi-rise condo in Channelside. With the help of Katie Gagnon from Blue Moon Trading Company, the Truong’s are finding a balance of using re-purposed items and art collected from their travels to create a comfortable and contemporary feel. We hope you will join us for METRO’s 8th Annual Summer with Style Party on Thurs., May 2 from 6 - 8:30 p.m at Neiman Marcus to benefit The Children’s Dream Fund. Marc Dahl filming out front of the Tampa Museum of Art for the 2013 Gasparilla Music Festival.

Marc Dahl Enjoying the Ride By Ronda M. Parag

10

April/May 2013

Marc Dahl is a local filmmaker and owner of Five Studios. His most recent collaboration, the feature film Pharmboy, was the winner of the Audience Award for the Best Film in the Narrative Feature category at the 2013 Gasparilla International Film Festival. This ultra low budget film was produced in 82 days and filmed exclusively in Pasco County. Pharmboy was a joint effort with Lawrence Feeney of Pasco Films. Dahl was the cinematographer, editor and sound designer, and Feeney was the writer and director. The duo met a couple years ago while making a short film for the 48 Hour Film Festival in Tampa/St. Petersburg. The filmmaking industry has recently seen a revolution due to advances in digital technology. Dahl is optimistic that Five Studios can make Tampa Bay the place to continue to make narrative feature films.

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Dahl followed a path of creative interests from his earliest years in school, as an artist, then a musician, which then led to the stage and theater, and eventually he headed off to college to major in film. It was on Davis Islands 12 years ago, that Dahl opened his studio offering creative services in art and design, photography, and film. His company, Five Studios, is a multimedia production studio. “It’s taken 25 years for me to go full circle and finally get back to what I originally set out to do ... make movies,” says Dahl. “It’s always been my true passion in life, and only now do I really feel like I am getting some traction. But, trying to make a living doing what I’ve always dreamed of, I’m like a dog with his head sticking out of the car window, I have no idea where I’m headed, but I’m sure enjoying the ride.” The Pharmboy movie trailer is at vimeo.com/fivestudios/pharmboy-trailer.

Iconic Porsche 911 Turns Half-Century By Ronda M. Parag

April/May 2013

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Everyone would agree the 911 is the heart of the Porsche brand. The icon of design, form and function are being celebrated as the quintessential sports car for the last 50 years. Making its debut at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in 1963, there hasn’t been a more recognizable silhouette in automotive history than the 911. Most Porsche lovers would agree that from the Panamera to the Cayenne, the 911 has wielded influence. With seven generations, more than 820,000 Porsche 911s have come off the assembly line. Unlike other sports cars, the 911 reconciles everyday practicality and functionality. Ferry Porsche described the 911 qualities best in this way: “The 911 is the only car you could drive on an African safari or at Le Mans, to the theatre or through New York City traffic.” The classic design and unending strive for automotive performance are a tribute to designers, engineers and fans of Porsche that has endured and evolved during the last century. All Doll’d Up at Florida Craftsmen By Megan Voeller

An exhibition of unusual, artist-crafted dolls at Florida Craftsmen came to life when executive director, Diane Shelly happened upon a page on Pinterest — the online forum for sharing pictures of artsy objects — devoted to the topic. The virtual encounter led her on a search for artists from across the country and as close by as St. Petersburg, to include in the exhibition “All Doll’d Up: The Magic of Art Dolls,” on view at Florida Craftsmen through June. The showcase of playful figures — from quirky babies to old ladies, personalities dainty and oversized, and some who even stretch the definition of human being — features the handiwork of 15 artists. Between them, they employ ceramic, resin, fiber, feathers and all varieties of found materials to create memorable sculptures that aren’t like any dolls most people have ever known. “The range of what an art doll is,” Shelly says, “is really phenomenal.” Washington, DC, artist Chris Malone uses beads, shells, and miniature African masks, among other materials. Florida artist, Joan Allen’s diva dolls, strive for pure comedy and the heights of femininity. The exhibition includes a St. Pete couple whose works are rarely exhibited locally. Chomick + Meder, a collaborative duo with backgrounds in animation and TV production design, have been making dolls and automata — dolls that move, powered by hand cranks or computerdriven motors — together for nearly 20 years.

The Junior League of Tampa Hosts Forum to Fight Human Trafficking

Stephanie Wiendl, President, The Junior League of Tampa

Florida ranks third nationally in human trafficking activity, and Tampa itself serves as a major trafficking hub. To heighten awareness of this crime happening locally, The Junior League of Tampa teamed with Stetson College of Law to host the “Human Trafficking Breakfast Forum” on February 27 at Stetson’s downtown Tampa campus. Top federal judges, prosecutors, FBI agents, detectives, and victim advocates spoke to 350+ attendees about the insidiousness of human trafficking and how it can remain hidden for years. “Many of the victims of trafficking – especially children — keep silent out of fear,” said Stephanie Wiendl, president of The Junior League of Tampa. “So we are trying to help community members recognize the signs of trafficking, and also tackle the issue at a legislative level with our advocacy efforts.” During Florida’s 2012 legislative session, the League’s advocacy was crucial to passing Bills HB 0099 and HB 7049, which increased criminal penalties for trafficking and augmented victim support services.

Tampa Preparatory School’s Bella Sera Gala Auction and Dinner

Photos/clockwise: Bella Sera Auction Chair and Platinum Patron Betsy Zollinger with Head of School Kevin Plummer; Gold Patrons Judy Genshaft and Steven Greenbaum; Patrons Todd and Shari Mezrah with Diamond Patrons Penny and Jeff Vinik.

Tampa Preparatory School hosted more than three hundred guests for the Bella Sera Gala Auction and Dinner at A La Carte Event Pavilion, chaired by Betsy Zollinger. As attendees browsed Silent Auction items, the School’s String Ensemble supplied musical ambiance for the event. The Live Auction began with a bidding frenzy on exciting items like designer handbags and jewelry; VIP experiences with the Lightning, Rays and Buccaneers; a trip to see Manchester United and outings with prominent members of the Terrapin community! The community supported this year’s Fund-a-Future campaign, as individuals donated more than $35,000 to support Tampa Prep’s generous financial assistance program. This campaign raises funds in addition to the event’s overall proceeds. The commitment to financial aid by current families, faculty and administrators exemplifies Tampa Prep’s mission of “A preparation for life with a higher purpose than self.” It truly was Bella Sera (a beautiful evening).

Each year, in Tampa Bay, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man & Woman of the Year” titles, by raising funds for blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks. We wish them all luck! METRO is a proud sponsor and urges readers to donate to one of the 11 Candidates for the 2013 Man & Woman of the Year campaign at www.mwoy.org/sun.

Winter went out with a bang.

March certainly went out like a lion with a whole lot of star spotting here in Tampa Bay. Athletes are the stars in Tampa, and Irish 31’s Paddyfest had plenty. The Gasparilla Film Festival had a special surprise guest, which led to a successful week for the burgeoning event. In its second year, the Charity Polo Classic starred up its roster as well, making it a hit with local Tampa Bay philanthropes. In its second year, Hyde Park favorite, Irish 31, didn’t disappoint with their annual Paddyfest. Benefiting the Mike Alstott Foundation, the two day event welcomed almost 4,000 people to celebrate March’s favorite holiday. Complete with a corn hole tournament, bands, and

green beer, the day and evening were full of revelers getting their Irish on. Sponsored by American Marketing and Orangetheory Fitness, the event’s founders and owners of Irish 31, Jay and Bianca Mize, couldn’t have been more pleased with the increased turnout of fans and regulars of Irish 31. Celebrating in true Irish fashion were: Mike Alstott, new Bucs addition Vincent Jackson, Rich Clements, Gregg Williams, former Ray, Toby Hall, Carlos Padilla, Donna & Ron Hanes, and Jane & Jeff McKee. The seventh annual Gasparilla International Film Festival, a six-day-long celebration that showcases a wide variety of independent and international films to Tampa Bay residents and visitors, welcomed approximately

1,000 guests who attended the festival's opening ceremony at Tampa Theatre. Pre-film, about 500 VIP guests were invited to a reception featuring complimentary beverages and food from Irish 31, Dazzle by Datz, Whole Foods, Shells Seafood and Timpano. Emcee Kathy Fountain hosted the evening’s festivities, and also presented the Opening Night Film, 'Empire State'. After the screening, the film’s director – Dito Montiel, producer – Randall Emmett, and star – Michael Angarano, came to the stage and hosted an interactive Q&A with GIFF's audience members. Also spotted during the week was Colin Farrell, in town to support his friend’s film, The Fix, which won Best Short at GIFF.

Chris Gannon is no stranger to success. Growing up as the son of Outback founder, Tim Gannon, certainly taught him a thing or two about hospitality. A former US Polo player, Gannon wanted to show the sport to Tampa Bay, and created the Reeves Charity Polo Classic. For only its second year, it’s proving to be a winner, as the sold out crowd of nearly 400 gathered for a beautiful day in Plant City. Enjoying the horsepower were, presenting sponsors Vivian Reeves, along with her daughter Kim Rogers, Kelly Rogers, player John Walsh, Andrea Penton, Andrew Schaberg, Tina Greene, Eilam & Betsy Isaak and George & Lefty Mantzaris. Reclaiming Urban Roots In A Modern Highrise. By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Stacy Larsen

The vibrant setting and vast views of the surrounding cityscape and waterfront, convinced Chicago transplants Anh-Tuan and April Truong to leave their lovely, low-country home in Apollo Beach to head, instead, for the clouds and the crowds. From their new home in Channelside Towers, the vantage point the family of four enjoys is truly a birdseye-view of the always bustling activity surrounding cruise and container ships at the Port of Tampa, attractions like the Florida Aquarium, Tampa Bay History Center and downtown venues like the Tampa Bay Times Forum. They are only floors away from nearby playgrounds and parks, restaurants and shops and entertainment ranging from performing arts to professional sports. The highrise, luxury condominium literally captivated the couple from the first time they toured the 4,850-square-foot space. Within its walls, they discovered a way to reclaim their urban roots and reside in a more central location.

The Truong's are transforming the interior of their hi-rise condo with eclectic finds and re-purposed decor including the hinged barn doors in the living room.

An urban loft feel was created in the dining room and living room when the wall was covered in salvaged bricks shipped from Chicago.

“We are urbanites at heart,” said April Truong. “Living in Apollo Beach felt a lot like being on vacation, but we soon found we missed the pulse and pace of the city.” What persuaded the cosmetic surgeon and his wife to take the leap and live in a 28th floor condominium, was a combined effect of high ceilings, a freeflowing floor design, floor-to-ceiling views throughout and an additional 1,300 square feet of terrace. That makes it more than roomy and comfortable for

the couple, their children Jonah, 4, and Lola, 11 months, plus two labrador mixes, Sam and Simon, as well as accommodating for entertaining friends watching multiple fireworks displays from their front balcony on holidays like 4th of July and New Year’s Eve. “It’s rare to find 28-story views with this much space, no matter what city you live in,” said Dr. Truong. The fully appointed kitchen, four bedrooms, three full and two half baths, formal dining room, living room, family room and office were originally used as a model to showcase the condominium lifestyle to potential homebuyers. While new and well designed, the residence did not fully reflect the Truong’s aesthetic, so the process of gradually transforming floors, doors and light fixtures began, slowly transforming the color scheme, incorporating personal touches like art collected from around the world, and making interior design decisions that combine comfort with a more contemporary look and feel. “We travel a lot and like to bring pieces back from where we travel,” added April, referring to decorative pieces placed throughout the home. “I also like furniture that has been re-purposed and authentic pieces like recycled door knobs. I may bring in some tall, wooden doors like those commonly found in Europe.” They even had bricks salvaged and shipped from Chicago to cover an entire wall in the family room. An authentic barn door recently replaced French doors, and the original carpeting was discarded for sturdy and stylish white oiled oak floor boards. It was the search for that perfect barn door that prompted a mutual friend to connect April with Katie Gagnon, owner of Blue Moon Trading Company,

who specializes in helping clients locate hard-to-find pieces or create what they need by having it custom designed. “This is a home with really good bones, so I believe that anything we do should keep the views as the focal point,” said Gagnon. “The views have the star power so we will work with a few pieces that are also stars, and let the rest of the furnishings and decor be the supporting actors.” With Gagnon’s guidance, the interior evolution will likely include the addition of dramatic lighting fixtures, a treatment on the terrace floor that could create a seamless look similar to the appearance of an infinity pool, and an understated but bold overall appearance to complement and co-exist with the widely encompassing exterior views. DINING Al Fresco IN TAMPA BAY By Ronda M. Parag

All things considered, the residents of Tampa Bay are lucky when it comes to weather. Generally, one can say that we live in paradise. Warm, balmy temperatures, sunny skies and a gentle breeze are the perfect blend for al fresco dining. The term al fresco is Italian, and generally means to dine outside or in the fresh air. Many Bay area restaurants offer an outdoor patio with misters to cool the patio in the heat of summer, or for that rare cool snap, heaters. Seating outside offers a casual experience and usually scenic view. Many offer views of colorful flowers and potted plants as well as the sound of a soothing fountain. Choosing a restaurant along Beach Drive in downtown St. Petersburg offers great people watching. Many times choosing to dine al fresco involves a quieter and less chaotic environment of the main dining room. It is well suited for restless children and many patios are pet-friendly. Now is the ideal time of year to dine al fresco and METRO’s found that the Bay area offers many options from kickback casual to elegantly formal.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

True beauty and wellness comes from a balanced Mind, Body and Spirit. Every treatment at Spa Sundara reflects this philosophy. Our environment, filled with the scent of lemongrass, eucalyptus, lavender and peppermint, lulls you in to a state of the balanced Mind. Our spa treatments such as Energy Work/Reiki, Thai Massage, Thai Reflexology, Holistic Facials, All Natural Manicures and Pedicures and Massage, fully balance the Body. The entire Spa Sundara journey balances and aligns the Spirit. We are inundated with toxins and chemicals everyday — the average person up to 200 before they leave their home. Spa Sundara offers a reprieve from this by using all natural products in all of our treatments, and by providing Detoxifying Spa services like our Kopi Coffee Detox body wrap, and our Feet First detoxifying foot bath and pedicure. We also offer an Infrared Sauna, which can help accelerate the Detoxification process and is amazing for fatigue, muscle aches and mood disorders. We were recently voted “Best Facial” in Tampa, we think this is in part due to our fusion of Reiki, an ancient healing

modality and massage, into each facial treatment, which makes it a truly unique experience and allows you to have a healthy glow, from the inside out! We are also one of the only spas in town that offer Thai massage and Thai foot reflexology. Both are amazingly healing experiences. We invite you to explore South Tampa’s only all natural sanctuary, Spa Sundara.

METROGuide Wine

H

ave you ever been intimidated by trying to choose a wine from a restaurant wine list? Has perusing bottles at your local wine shop ever made you think you were reading ancient hieroglyphics? Chambolle-Musigny, Brunello di Montalcino, Cabernet Franc, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett … what do all those words on a bottle of wine mean, anyway? Part of the confusion is the lack of consistency throughout the world of wine. For instance, here in America we bottle our wines with varietal labeling. France, for the most part, bottles their wines by appellation labeling. Italy and Spain do a combination of varietal and appellation labeling. While German wine labels read like an encyclopedia of information, it is no wonder so many consumers are confused and bewildered by all those unpronounceable words on a

76

April/May 2013

wine label. Well, this beginner’s guide to deciphering wine labels should help ease anxiety at your next business dinner when you are handed the wine list, or when you try to pick a bottle during your next visit to a wine shop. For most Americans, domestic wines are the easiest to understand. American wine labels are identified by the grape varietal, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay or Merlot. Secondly, the appellation is listed, such as Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley or Paso Robles. Other important information such as producer (winery), vintage (year the grapes were grown) and alcohol content are usually in plain sight, making domestic wines the easiest to understand. Other New World countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa and others use this same approach to labeling their wines. French wine labels can be intimidating

www.TampaBayMetro.com

because they label their wines, for the most part, with appellation labeling by listing the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC). The reason is because the French believe terroir is the most important aspect of the wine. The term terroir is a French word with no direct translation, but most closely means “a sense of place.” Since terroir or place is so important to the French, their wine labels list the name of the appellation, village or commune in which the wine was grown, instead of listing the grape variety. So that means you need to be well versed in French geography and have some knowledge which grapes are grown in which regions. Like domestic wine labels, French wine labels also list the producer. A way to determine the producer is to look for the words Château, Domaine or Maison followed by continued on page 78

the producer’s name, for example: Château Haut-Brion, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Maison Louis Jadot. The wine’s vintage and alcohol content are clearly marked, like their domestic counterparts. I won’t lie; deciphering an Italian or Spanish wine label is a challenge. The reason is the variable ways the labels are identified. Some labels list the grape varietal such as Pinot Grigio, Albariño or Dolcetto as the main method of labeling. Other labels list the village or district such as Chianti, Rioja or Valpolicella as their primary way of differentiating. And finally, there is a third and most confusing and confounding method to their labeling madness, known as the proprietary names. That’s right, if it weren’t already confusing enough, some producers choose to make up proprietary names such as Tignanello, Ornellaia or Termanthia. Without a vast amount of prior knowledge, how are consumers supposed to know what is in the bottle? And then there is the German wine

label, a virtual encyclopedia of information, presented in an orderly and systemic approach, but with perhaps too much information. A German wine label contains the vintage, the producer or bottler, the Pradikat or level of ripeness which there are six degrees with daunting names such as Spätlese and Trockenbeerenauslese, the degree of dryness, the village or vineyard in which the wine was grown, the grape varietal, the percentage of alcohol and more! I’m surprised the winemaker’s mother’s maiden name isn’t listed. But all kidding aside, the German wine label gives the consumer the most amount of information about the wine inside the bottle, and clues to how it will taste more so than any other wine label in the world. But still, having a PHD in enology shouldn’t be required for wanting an enjoyable glass of wine. Luckily for consumers, the tide is turning and producers from around the world are trying to provide more information to consumers to help eliminate confusion, and the snobbery sometimes associated

with wine. Many bottles are starting to use QR Codes on labels so that a quick scan with a smart phone provides a plethora of information that is perhaps missing from the label. Back labels are starting to provide additional valuable information about the wine and including websites, tasting notes, varietal compositions, and even phone numbers. One importer of Spanish wine, Ole Imports, has gone to putting a toll free telephone number on the back of every bottle they produce that provides information on the grape, the region of origin, its terroir and everything you’ll want to know including what foods you pair with the wine. Hopefully, changes like these will result in consumers being happier with their purchases and eager to try new wines. On your next trip to your favorite retailer, ask to see some of these new bottlings that provide extra information and help decipher the riddle that is the wine label. Passion for the Taste of Italy Bavaro’s Pizza Napoletana & Pastaria | By Ronda M. Parag

an Bavaro is passionate about family, pizza, pasta, sauce and all things Italian. “I love my heritage,” says Bavaro. Moving to Tampa from New Jersey, Bavaro was seeking a change of pace. He had sold a successful business and was looking to open an Italian restaurant. He looked at several cities including Miami, but decided that Tampa was a ‘city on the up-rise.’ “I wanted to be a part of something from the ground-up,” says Bavaro. He packed up his family, now five children strong, ages 2 -10, to follow his dream. He and

his wife, Anna Maria, invested in the building at the corner of Franklin Street and Twiggs Ave. in downtown Tampa, and spent the next year designing and creating a quaint restaurant with just under 50 seats. The floors are from Italy and the bricks were salvaged and shipped from Chicago. It’s reminiscent of a small, neighborhood cafe in Italy. The restaurant opened under the original name Pizzaiolo Bavaro in March 2009, however, last September, Bavaro re-branded the restaurant with just his last name, Bavaro’s, to be consistent with

his new business venture — a line of pasta sauces. Bavaro says that patrons had been asking for the sauce, so they could re-create the delicious pasta meals at home. Bavaro had his hands full with the restaurant, but after a large catering event fell through and he had tons of sauce — he decided to bottle the sauce. That was over two years ago and now Bavaro’s is a line of 3 Italian specialty sauces — Pomodoro, Marinara, Arrabbiata — with distribution in more than 500 stores throughout the United States, including Whole Foods and Fresh Market. Locally, Datz also carries the sauce. Last year, Bavaro was invited to cook and provide the Bavaro’s line of sauces at the Emmy Awards in the Celebrity Lounge. There are now over 40 Hollywood celebrities that regularly order the sauce. The heart of the restaurant is the wood-fired Ferrara brick oven imported from Italy. With temperatures reaching almost 900 degrees, the more than 13 pizzas on the dinner menu come out with crispy edges in under 2 minutes. With a focus on quality, Bavaro and his team of brothers, Steven Franco and Rene Franco, source locally whenever possible and import only the finest ingredients from Italy. Everything from the pizza dough to the pasta, and the tempting tiramisu and cannolis, are made from scratch. Originally from Sardinia, Italy, Steven Franco handles the kitchen, pastas and desserts, while Rene Franco oversees the pizza and the sauces. It has only been in the last six months that Bavaro hasn’t been in the restaurant from opening until close. “Now I’m usually at the oven Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights, and my other time is spent at the facility working on the sauce line. It takes a lot of passion and I 100 percent love it,” Bavaro says emphatically. M Bavaro’s Pizza Napoletana & Pastaria 514 N. Franklin Street Tampa, FL 33602 813.868.4440 | www.bavarostampa.com
