The temperatures are rising, but still bearable, the humidity is low and it’s a wonderful time to be outside and stroll through downtown Tampa along the Riverwalk, or to explore the shops on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. We shot inside the studio of photographer Brian James for METRO’s Spring Style Guide. With a full crew of hair and make-up stylists, and three fashion models, we showcase the hottest looks from Neiman Marcus, The Haute Shop and Cerulean Blu for the season. Lifestyle expert and author Krayl Funch, offers tips on how to host your own wine tasting this spring season. Gather friends, a couple good bottles and enjoy an evening in. The Morean Arts Center is celebrating 100 years in the arts community and announced a new executive director, Michael Killorean, who comes from the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. We are excited to welcome him to the area in June. In METROHome Tour, we feature the beautiful home of Rick and Kathy Weatherly in St. Pete Beach, that was completely renovated and restored with the help of interior designer Nicholas Konzal. Originally designed by Henry DuPont, the same architect as the Don CeSar Hotel, the home was completely restored and renovated for modern living. If you are in search of a new place for Aged Prime Beef, check out the new menu at Packard’s Steakhouse, located inside Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club for dinner, with a view that overlooks the Copperhead Golf Course. A weekend Getaway to the Naples Grande Beach Resort, with recently renovated guest rooms, will be a peaceful escape for a few days to relax and re-charge. There are lots of social events taking place and worthy charities to support, so we hope to see you out and about town.

Hosting Your Own Wine Tasting Party No time to plan, book and take that dream wine tasting vacation to Burgundy or Sonoma this year? Get your wine fix by hosting a wine tasting party at home this season. Not sure where to begin? With a few tips from Lifestyle Expert Krayl Funch, your wine tasting dreams will move to reality as you easily plan your own tasting party.

Choose a Theme Selecting a theme for your wine party will do more than set the tone for your décor, it will also help narrow down the selection of wines you will need to purchase and taste. A few options are - Region, Variety, Vintage.

Set Up A Blind Tasting Looking to stump a friend who is a self proclaimed wine snob? Pour wines into clear decanters then number each wine. Be sure to take notes on which wine is which for the big reveal.

Food + Palate Cleansers Set out plenty of palate cleansers such as water crackers or oyster crackers, alongside a variety of savory and sweet items. Not only will your guests appreciate something to absorb the wine, but tasting wines with different flavor aspects such as salty, sweet, creamy, nutty or spicy, can become part of the overall wine tasting experience.

Setting the Table + Atmosphere Avoid decorating your table with scented candles or flowers that may compete with the wine tasting experience. Instead, opt for seasonal greens and arrangements that add a pop of color and texture without scent. Lifestyle Contributor Krayl Funch www.kraylfunch.com

Other Wine Party Must Have’s • Clear Glassware • Dump Buckets • Water • Note Cards + Pencils

Museum of Fine Arts Honors Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height

©Lateef Mangum

Dr. Dorothy Height selected this hat for the reception in the Capitol honoring her with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004.

©Lateef Mangum

In 1938 Dorothy Height was one of 10 young people selected by Eleanor Roosevelt to help plan the Youth World Conference. She wore this white mink hat in one of her first encounters with the famous First Lady.

Known for her courage, intelligence, leadership and sense of fashion, the MFA in St. Petersburg celebrates civil rights icon, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height, in an exhibition with 42 of her hats on display. Height had a flair for fashion and was almost never seen in public without a hat. One hat in the exhibition is by Harriet Rosebud, a noted milliner who grew up in St. Petersburg. She wore others by such fashion luminaries as Oscar de la Renta, Mr. John, Lisa Rene, Luke Song, and Ruth Kropveld, who established Chapeau Creations. Hats included in the exhibition are historical in nature and worn to numerous events including a meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt, the DNC that nominated Barack Obama, a meeting with George W. Bush, where she received

the 2004 Congressional Gold Medal and President Bill Clinton, where she was awarded the country’s highest civilian honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Height was given a place of prominence at the 2009 inauguration of President Obama, who called her “the godmother of the civil rights movement and a hero to so many Americans.”

Dorothy Heights Hats will be on display from April 29 - July 29 at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. For more information and hours call 727.896.2667 or visit www.mfastpete.org

Tampa Museum of Art Hosts Pride & Passion 2017 Pride & Passion (the event that leaves us holding our breath annually) returns on Saturday, April 29, as Cirque de Mascarade from 8 p.m. - Midnight. The inspiration for Pride & Passion 2017 comes from the circuses, cabarets, and vibrant performance halls frequented by 19th century artists, intellectuals and writers in Paris. With Cirque de Mascarade, the Pride & Passion mantra of “dress to impress” invites guests to add a 19th century bohemian twist to their attire. Masks are encouraged. Tickets are $100 in advance; $125 at the door ticket (pending availability) and include open bar featuring Tito’s Handmade Vodka, heavy hors d’oeuvres by Anise Global Gastrobar, Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café, Malio’s Prime Steak House & Salt Block Catering, entertainment (surprises and fun!), private gallery access, and a one-year Museum Membership. Proceeds benefit the Tampa Museum of Art’s educational programs and exhibitions.

Alongside the re-emergence of Tampa’s downtown core, there has been a keen interest by some of Tampa’s leading companies in relocating their businesses to re-develop the historical North Hyde Park neighborhood. Older Lundy & Alvarez, one of Tampa’s premier law firms, is among the companies who recently moved to North Hyde Park. The firm recently moved into a newly constructed 19,000-square foot building located at 1000 West Cass Street. The firm is thrilled to have landed in this location, which is immediately adjacent to the University of Tampa and within minutes of the courthouse and Hyde Park Village. “North Hyde Park provided our firm the space we

needed to continue to grow, while remaining convenient for our clients and for our attorneys to get to the courthouse, even on a moment’s notice if necessary,” said Michael Lundy, Managing and Founding Partner. Charity Polo Classic When: Saturday, February 25, 2017 Where: Di Polo Tour, Plant City The sixth annual Charity Polo Classic, presented by the Morgan Auto Group, benefitted The Children’s Cancer Center, the Ryan Nece Foundation, Clothes to Kids and Morgan Auto Group’s Helping Hand Fund. The sport of polo has been around for thousands of years, but even today this fascinating sport continues to gain new adherents. There are many exciting sports out there, but few can match the excitement and athleticism of the sport of polo. By combining the speed and agility of the polo pony with the intelligence and savvy of human players, polo offers something extra special to everyone. The sold out crowd of over 900 guests enjoyed beautiful weather while watching a skydiver land on the field during the national anthem. The bubbly flowed and area favorite restaurants like Besito Mexican, Cask Social Kitchen and Seminole Hard Rock's Council Oak, featured spreads that kept the crowd going all afternoon. DJ Fresh pumped up the delighted crowd and Tampa's own Arturo Fuente Cigars presented a cigar lounge. Charity Polo Classic board member Andrew Barrios said this year's event raised nearly $300,000 for four different charities, which is about $55,000 over last year. Historic Renovation With Flair Couple Reclaims Pass-a-Grille Home By Mary Lou Janson | Photography By Amy Lamb

O

ne stands grandly on the glistening white sands bordering the Gulf of Mexico. The other occupies a waterfront parcel perched along the shores of Little McPherson Bayou. One is an historic hotel towering 10 stories above ground, capable of accommodating hundreds of guests and sporting a distinctive pink exterior. The other is a single-story, single family home distinguished by its stucco exterior and Spanish Mediterranean design. Located within the same St. Pete Beach community and constructed during the 1920s, the two structures would seem to have little in common. The common thread is that both are products of the same designing mind. The Don CeSar Hotel and a home less than a mile from that landmark, are the architectural offspring of Henry DuPont.

Henry DuPont built the more modest structure in 1925, likely living there at least part of the time he was supervising the rise of the luxury resort, affectionately known as the Pink Palace, that opened in 1928. Both buildings have literally weathered many tropical storms, persevered through periods of neglect and withstood changes of owners and occupants throughout the years. The hotel, now a Four Diamond-rated resort, served as a military hospital and a regional office for Veteran’s Administration. The house recently rented as a beach retreat. Kathy Weatherly had her eye on the home ever since she and her husband, Rick, first started dividing their time between Wisconsin and a condominium near the Sunshine Skyway bridge. “I was an accidental Floridian,” recalls Weatherly. “I traveled all over the U.S. for my company that made medical devices. I was staying at a hotel on Reddington Beach and fell in love with the area, the people, the color of the sky and the sun.” For seven years Weatherly watched and waited. Finally in 2014, when the house was for sale, she made her move and made it hers. Inspections revealed extensive water damage, electric and plumbing were woefully outdated and a new roof was needed, among other things. Contractors tried to convince Weatherly that tearing it down and rebuilding made the most sense. Fortunately, the new owners wanted to return the house to its former luster and live there; that meant adding a master suite and master bathroom to comfortably accommodate the couple. Walls had to be moved or removed to enhance the view and improve the flow. Adding windows was integral to inviting more light into the interior. Enter Barry Flaherty of the St. Petersburg-based Flaherty Construction, an expert in historic renovation.

Working closely with Flaherty was Nicholas Konzal, an acclaimed interior designer, who previously worked on two of Weatherly’s Wisconsin homes. Konzal said he quickly realized the project represented a rare chance to, not just create change, but to honor an era and pay homage to the architect. “I knew what we could turn the house into and how to realize the vision,” said Konzal, owner of the Milwaukee-based Nicholas Carl Design. “This is a classic, modern home, but in every room you are either living in or with history. This was an opportunity to preserve the dignity of the home.” It was a much more extensive renovation than anticipated. Nearly every stud had to be replaced. The original footprint was expanded to a 2,100-square foot area encompassing three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Floors were restored or replaced. A custom-made, wood-burning stone fireplace had to be shipped from Texas, installed and finished on-site. Tile from Spain, light fixtures from Italy, a metal front door crafted in California and an exterior mural commissioned from Gulfport artist Susanne Vernon, combined to create a classic, but contemporary look, that is interwoven with beach-inspired colors and textures. “I wanted to focus the living area on the water,” said Konzal. “This really beautiful interior opens out to the outdoor living area, which is right against the water. The floor plan offers waterfront views throughout the house. The proportions are beautiful, and we created a more private area in the back of the house, by adding an outdoor kitchen and dining area that are not within view of the street.” Attention has been paid to every detail. An antique dating to 1925 is in every room. Exquisite vintage tiles dating to 1925 still stored in their original boxes in an attic, were discovered online and now grace the side entrance steps and perimeter of the infinity pool. Original

cement Cuban floor tiles lining the room Rick uses as an office, were sanded and restored. Heart of pine floorboards, in the master bedroom, were reclaimed from another local landmark hotel recently torn down, the Belleview Biltmore in Belleair. And the exterior stucco was expertly applied by hand, just as it would have been done in 1925. “I bought the house to save the house,” Weatherly added. “People stop by all the time to thank me for not tearing it down. I have restored the house and now I have the home I want.” M
