81 Metro Dining Guide A Guide to Area Restaurants

Publisher’s Notes We celebrate all things Tampa Bay in the annual Best of METRO 2015.

The categories for Arts & Entertainment, Style & Décor, Health & Beauty and Dining & Spirits, are chocked full of great spots for shopping, eating and playing. Be sure to let us know if we’ve missed one of your favorite spots and if you visit one of the places that we’ve listed, please let them know you found them in METRO. As parents, education of our children is tops on our list of things to consider almost as soon as they are born. METRO chatted with three local families and their choice for private education. The common thread among the families was the need for a caring and nurturing environment, along with a balance of academics and extracurricular activities. For those seeking information on area private schools, be sure to review METRO’s Private School List that includes a survey of 48 schools and information that provides basic information to begin the search. The Private School List 2015 is a great community resource. Delight your guests with the holiday cocktail recipes in METROLife on page 12 and check out the latest Gasparilla attire on page 16. Meet a St. Petersburg boutique owner, who has created her own line of resort wear and it’s made locally. Meet Cerulean Blu owner, designer and fashionista, Desiree Noisetta in METROLife People. Children Across Borders founders, Vivek and Sharmila Seth, are hosting Bollywood Nights on February 21, to benefit their children’s charity. We hope you will support their cause of helping children in areas of education, shelter and healthcare. There are plenty of places to discover in Florida, from the historic St. Augustine, celebrating 450 years next year, to the entertainment and beaches of Ft. Lauderdale with a stay at the W. It’s never to soon to plan your next getaway. ’Tis the season for family and friends, and we wish all of you the happiest joys of the season.

Discovering A Passion Desiree Noisette, Boutique Owner and Fashion Designer Creative inspiration and frustration are what led Desiree Noisette to design and manufacture her own line of resort wear. As owner of Cerulean Blu, a swim and resort wear boutique, located on Beach Drive in St. Petersburg, Noisette searched the country to find sophisticated, tropical resort wear for the boutique. After attending a number of shows, Noisette found a few pieces from various lines, but not an entire collection that satisfied her. “I wanted to create affordable resort wear with a sophisticated style and feel,” said Noisette. “Pieces that can go from the beach to dinner.” While her formal education is as a lawyer, Noisette says that she has always had an artistic side and draws inspiration from the works at local museums including Salvador Dalí and Dale Chihuly. Her latest endeavor of designing and manufacturing her own line of resort wear, the Signature Collection, debuted at the St. Pete Art & Fashion week in late October. Through a lot of research and with the help of her husband,

14

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Aaron Davis, who has a manufacturing background, the fear was taken out of the manufacturing process. “I knew that most of the swim wear lines that we carry in the boutique are made in the USA, so it was a matter of finding the right people and fabrics,” said Noisette. “We found the right materials, at the right prices and the collection is made right here in St. Petersburg.” Noisette, who gave birth to son, AJ in June, also credits the baby with her design inspirations. “I have to put myself on a schedule and thanks to the baby, I give myself a project and have this day to be inspired.” Noisette’s designs are classic silhouettes with bold colors, custom prints and soft fabrics. “The woman wearing Cerulean Blu has a sophisticated tropical style, loves adventure and is not afraid to turn some heads,” said Noisette. “The debut of the line has been phenomenal and women are loving the line of tops, pants, skirts and dresses.” —RP

THE TRUTH ABOUT MAGAZINES: The Junior League of Tampa Announces New Award

“Magazines build buzz. They excel in reaching people who shape attitudes and behavior.” Source: GfK MRI Fall 2011

The Junior League of Tampa will launch The Luminaries — an annual award luncheon to recognize outstanding women and men who have, through their inspiring leadership, made a lasting impact on the Tampa community. At the luncheon, to be held on Friday, May 15, 2015 at the Hilton Tampa Downtown, the League will showcase — for the first time — the digital biographies, created by WEDU, of these Luminaries. This year’s theme, Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future, invites attendees to learn about local leaders and be inspired to be the change they want to see in their own community. “Steeped in 89 years of rich Tampa history, the League stands in a unique position to preserve the life histories of women and men, who have instituted transformative change in this community, and through the power of storytelling, inspire a future movement of community leaders,” says League President Lynette Russell. METROHome Tour

Elevated Beach Chic By Mary Lou Janson

Moving to Florida presented New Jersey residents, Lee and Cindy Launer with an opportunity to take a more comfortable — but unconventional — approach to how they live. Their quest for a home designed to be more easily maintained and less formal, essentially turned the couple’s world upside down.

By inverting their two-story home’s floor plan, the layout was less traditional, but definitely hospitable. Downstairs feels more like a chic beachfront cottage or a luxury island retreat that’s more suitable for entertaining. The floor above, where most of the family’s day-to-day living centers, is intentionally designed to make folks feel at home. Upstairs houses the kitchen, dining room and family room, while the downstairs features a custom-built bar with a large side

buffet. It’s also a kid-friendly space outfitted with a floor that can handle drips — but won’t cause slips — when post-swim wet feet are walking through. Overstuffed sofas with stylish, but durable, fabrics and a hightop table made from a wooden slab with its natural jagged edge still intact, will manage to retain their good looks as the guests keep coming. “We wanted a minimalist design that was clean and not cluttered. Overall, we wanted a casual, open floor plan,” said Lee Launer.

Technology and teamwork kept ideas and updates flowing as the four bedroom, six bathroom home gradually took shape, while its future occupants remained in their New Jersey neighborhood. Included in the planning process were the couple, Cindy’s children, Abby, 13, and Nate 15, and what the couple describe as a “design dream team” comprised of Rob Bowen, principal of Rob Bowen Design Group, Stephen Smith, partner with Cooper Johnson Smith Architects, and

Steve Loupin of Loupin Construction, a custom home developer. “We were able to do some really great things with this house. The overall feeling is very relaxed, very wash-and-wear and is designed for very easy maintenance,” said Bowen. There are also many distinctive enhancements that add interest in atypical ways and places. Bowen introduced a spa-like feel to the master bathroom using inlaid pebbles in the floor and accenting an expansive, glass-doored shower with handmade tiles featuring a leaf motif. The second floor kitchen island brings a bit of the beach indoors. Made from concrete mixed with aggregate, the surface gained a less industrial and more sand-like appearance. Both floors feature expansive, wide open spaces that allow people and conversation to flow freely. Wall-to-wall glass doors on both floors fill them with natural light, while providing panoramic views of the sparkling waters of Pirate’s Cove. The interior is a masterpiece of minimalism that avoids being too stark or blandly monotone, by striking just the right balance using natural materials, a subdued, but varied, color palette, metals featuring a matte finish, large light fixtures that add flair and sophistication to the high-ceilinged rooms, and numerous textures that bring warmth, depth and dimension to the walls, floors and furnishings. “We think of it as a combination of the homes you would see in the West Indies or Key West, something that is more resort-like,” said Cindy Launer. “It’s a clean, simple, livable space that is functional but also very warm.” M

Carrollwood Day School The Gionis Family www.carrollwooddayschool.org

Parents of four children, who all attend Carrollwood Day School, Steve and Amy Gionis first discovered the school after receiving a recommendation from friends. Steve Gionis owns an insurance agency and Amy Gionis has her own dental practice, Dental Wellness of Westchase. They were impressed upon their first visit, when looking for pre-school for their son, Alex who is now in 12th grade in the IB program and will graduate this year. “It’s important to know your child’s strength and weaknesses and find a school that will work to bring out the best in them,” said Steve. “Our kids have always liked going to school, it was never a battle getting them to go.” The children are involved in a variety of sports and activities. Alex plays

baseball and recently signed to play baseball in college at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Ashlyn is involved in lots of activities including gymnastics, while sister, Ava, enjoys the performing arts and brother, Aidan, likes tennis and baseball. “The academics are not so oppressive that the kids can’t do extracurriculars,” said Steve. “They are actually encouraged.” When asked his thoughts on looking at private schools and Carrollwood Day School (CDS), in particular, Steve Gionis said, “I think parents should simply search for a school that fits the personality and needs of their child. What we love about CDS is that there is not a “one size fits all” mentality. The teachers and staff go to great lengths to understand each child’s needs, then tailor their methods accordingly. At the same time, the school has tremendous unity and a consistent message and approach from Pre-K through High School. The children are held to very high standards, but in a truly outstanding environment.”

Canterbury School of Florida The Rios Family www.canterburyflorida.org

Art Rios, a lawyer specializing in immigration law and his wife, Sharon, a housewife, are originally from Puerto Rico, but Art’s family moved to the area when he was a young boy, so they have raised their family in St. Petersburg. When they were searching for a school, Art says they wanted to find a place where equal importance was given to academics and the child’s individual formation and growth, as well as a school that has a strong family community. “There is a real sense of balance and community at Canterbury,” said Art. “The school is like an extended family where they celebrate everyone’s success.” Daughters, Maria and Alondra started at Canterbury in the lower school and the family was won over by the school’s long time reputation for academic excellence, and for fostering and instilling strong family and moral values through the extensive Character education program, that begins in PK 3 and continues through senior year. “The girls enjoy the academic challenges and are interested in learning and enjoy telling us what they learned,” said Art. Both girls participate in the Drama program and have had roles and starred in Canterbury productions since they were young. Maria was Alice in the 2012 production of Alice in Wonderland, and Alondra, who has an amazing singing voice, was Ariel in the Middle school production of the Little Mermaid in October. Rios believes that Canterbury provides a sense of balance and community. “There is no lesson more important than living a well-balanced life with a respectful and positive attitude and that is what Canterbury teaches,” said Art. “That is their core philosophy, and this is just simply what they’re all about.” “Canterbury friends have become our extended family and the faculty loves and truly cares for our daughters,” said Art. “I can’t image my girls being at any other school.”

Corbett Preparatory School of IDS The Judd Family www.corbettprep.com

As busy Family Medicine physicians with four offices in their practice, Bay Area Primary Care, the location of Corbett Preparatory School of IDS was an important factor to Scott and Sonali Judd, when they looked at schools for their children. Sonali attended Berkeley Preparatory School and remembers the long car ride to school. The school is convenient to where the Judd’s live in Carrollwood and offers a balance of academics and fine art programs. From cooking to drama, there are so many activities to balance out classroom education. “I’m amazed at the technology that is offered with white boards in both Apple and Microsoft formats,” said Sonali. The children can decide which format works best for them. “The school has a great arts program that helps to build the kids up,” Sonali adds. “The kids love going to school and are excited about the specials. There is learning by fun and it’s nice to see such a thriving environment.” Maya, age 11 and in 5th grade, participates in Spirit of IDS Chorus, dance, gymnastics, drama and also enjoys horseback riding. Asha Judd, age 9, is in the 3rd/4th grade multi-age All Star Class and also is in Spirit of IDS Chorus and participates in volleyball, dance, gymnastics and horseback riding. Aiden is 6 1/2 and is a Brilliant Bug, a multi-age class of first and second graders, and started the 1st grade this year. Aiden enjoys basketball and started piano and looks forward to more drama and chorus opportunities in the future. The school starts performing arts at 3 years old, building confidence and helping the kids to have no fear of crowds. “There is so much offered,” said Sonali. “Corbett Prep offers one stop shopping for my children to become well-rounded individuals.”

Ariel View of St. Augustine

Steeped in History, Beauty and Charm

F

lorida’s Historic Coast is home to St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States. Settled nearly 450 years ago, it has been home to many other cultures — Timucuan, Greek, Minorcan and British. With all the history and culture, St. Augustine is a perfect family destination to learn and explore all the city has to offer, and that is plenty. With 42 miles of unspoiled beaches, perfect for building sand castles, surfing and fishing, the pristine beaches are a peacefull place to watch the sun rise or sun set. For historic B & B lodging, check out The St. Francis Inn. Dating from 1791, The St. Francis is the oldest inn in the city. Offering a daily buffet breakfast, and social hour, guests will truly enjoy the ambiance of this quaint inn. The St. Francis Inn also offers beach cottage rentals, giving direct access to white, sandy beaches. Hop on the Red Train Tours for the

76

best way to see the city. Guests on the train are allowed to stop at the attraction of their choice, and hop back on to explore more, at their leisure. The Pirate Museum has one of the world’s largest collections of authentic pirate artifacts, dating back to the 16th century. Visitors will also want to make a stop at the Colonial Quarter, where guests can participate in musket drills, blacksmith demonstrations and more. Don’t miss the Fountain of Youth Park, where the most popular visit seems to be drinking from Ponce de Leon’s legendary spring, or see a cannon firing demonstration. Some must see attractions: a tour of Castillo de San Marcos; this massive fortress took more than 20 years to build in the 1600s, and is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Dark of the Moon Tour at the St. Augustine Lighthouse; climb 219 steps to the top for a breathtaking view, and learn all the ghost stories on the only tour that gets you in the tower at night. The

St. Augustine Alligator Farm; with 23 crocodilian species from the Americas, Australia, Africa and Asia. Flagler College and the Lightner Museum are also must sees. The Victory III Scenic Cruise is a great way to see the city from a different vantage point. When looking for unique dining experiences, look no further than The Ice Plant Bar & Restaurant; a farm to table restaurant and bar with a unique atmosphere. The Columbia Restaurant is a must stop for Spanish cuisine; for cajun-style seafood try Hooked on Harry’s. The City of St. Augustine will be commemorating the 450th Anniversary of its founding through-out the year, in 2015, with the biggest events taking place in September. However, there are a number of ways for visitors to experience the celebration throughout the year. M www.StAugustine-450.com www.FloridasHistoricCoast.com

Halter Ranch is a historic property that throughout history has been a farm, a cattle ranch, the setting for the movie Arachnophobia and most recently a vineyard. Swiss entrepreneur and conservationist, Hansjörg Wyss, purchased the 900-acre ranch in 2000 and planted 280-acres to grapes. Halter Ranch has 19 different grape varietals growing in nearly 80 different vineyard blocks. It is here where they craft balanced wines of ripeness and elegance. The Halter Ranch is a vineyard and winery that are doing all the right things. Let’s start with organic farming. Though not certified organic, the Halter Ranch farms organically whenever possible. On a recent visit to the property, Winemaker Kevin Sass talked about farming sustainably and organic methods of fertilization, pest control, and weed and mildew control. In 2008, Halter Ranch achieved SIP

Certification (Sustainability in Practice) from a rigorous, third party governing body who visits the property regularly. Ultimately, he wants his children to be able to play among the vines, without fear they will come into contact with anything sinister. Every drop of juice that goes into Halter Ranch is estate grown on high altitude vineyards, meaning they do not purchase any fruit from outside sources, a common practice in the wine industry. This allows complete control from bud break to bottle. Halter Ranch is located approximately equidistant between Los Angeles and San Francisco in Paso Robles. Paso Robles is California’s secret weapon and is capable of producing incredible wine, predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, at a fraction of the price of wines from the Napa Valley. This once sleepy ‘cow town’ is now a thriving grape-growing region with over 300 commercial wineries and a yet untapped

potential. Paso Robles has some climatic and geological advantages over the more established and renowned Napa Valley to the north. First, Paso Robles has superb soil. Many of Europe’s finest vineyards are planted in limestone-rich soil, such as Champagne, Burgundy, Saint-Emilion, the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone. However, there is no limestone to be found in Napa or Sonoma, but the vineyards in Paso Robles are planted in California’s largest exposed limestone layer. This is why the French owners of wineries such as Tablas Creek, L’Aventure and Daou chose Paso Robles as the home for their vineyards. Paso Robles also has a perfect climate for grape growing. Since Paso Robles is located in the central coast of California, they experience hot days allowing the grapes to achieve full ripeness. But, the region keeps moderated due to a break in the Santa Lucia Mountain Range called the Templeton Gap, which allows the cold air from the Pacific to cool the grapes at sunset, helping the wines to retain their natural acidity and freshness. Paso is famous for California’s largest diurnal temperature spread, which measures the difference

between the daytime high and the nighttime low. Hot days exceeding 105-degree highs are often followed by overnight lows that dip into the 40s, making for a temperature spread of over 60 degrees. This type of climate is really good for grapes. Halter Ranch might not be a recognized winery yet, but their fame and notoriety are a sure bet. Once their wines are ‘discovered’ by oenophiles in the coming years, their prices are sure to increase over time. But now, Halter Ranch is a hidden gem producing superb wines worth nearly twice their asking price. Here are a few Halter Ranch wines that are worth seeking out in the New Year. 2012 Halter Ranch Côtes de Paso Rouge $24.95 | An ode to wines from the Southern Rhone region of France and is comprised mostly of Grenache, Syrah

and Mourvèdre. This fruit-forward wine offers flavors of red cherry, blackberry and tobacco, along with a gamey-meaty note from the Syrah. The wine is soft and easy drinking with very mellow tannins making it a very food friendly wine that would pair with many dishes. 2011 Halter Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon $24.95 | Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape in the Paso Robles region and Halter Ranch does a really fine job with it. This stunner is a real steal for the price and competes with wines double its price from the Napa Valley. Classic Cabernet flavors of cassis, blackberries, minerals, smoke and vanilla make for a captivating wine. 2010 Halter Ranch ‘Ancestor’ $42.95 | The Ancestor is the flagship wine from Halter Ranch and is named in

honor of a tree on the property, that is the largest Coast Live Oak on the planet. The wine is a blend of Bordeaux varietals with almost equal proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot and is a massive wine with flavors of cassis, black raspberry, blackberry, coffee, mocha and baking spices. Talking with winemaker Kevin Sass on a recent visit to the property, he explains the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon will increase in future vintages and may be labeled as a Cabernet Sauvignon if the percentage is at least 75 percent. hen owners, Roger & Suzanne Perry do something, they do it right. As owners of Datz and Dough in South Tampa, the couple decided to expand the culinary scene in Tampa by opening a contemporary take on traditional New Orleans style cuisine in late August. “We have always been enamored by the food in NOLA and wanted to bring those flavors home to Tampa,” said Suzanne Perry. The Perry’s and the culinary team traveled extensively to New Orleans to taste and source the most authentic recipes, ingredients and dishes for the menu. The interior feels Nawlins’ authentic with walls of exposed red brick, ornate black wrought iron, a crystal chandelier, tin paneled ceilings, gilded gold mirrors and gaslight lanterns designed by David Jackson.
