Publisher’s Notes A wild start to the social season. The fall season calls for trends filled with animal prints, black leather, lace, purple, red as the new neutral and METRO has a fashion feature with all the styles from local stores and boutiques. Special thanks to Neiman Marcus, Deborah Kent’s, Love That!, Paradise Island, JC’s Boutique, Georgette’s and Tresca Italia for providing the clothing and accessories. Photographer, Ryan Gautier, hair and make-up by Monique and stylist, Linda Zipkin created wonderful images as a guide for all things fall. The photos were taken on location at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina. METRO magazine has once again teamed with Best Doctors in America® to provide the listing of more than 590 Tampa Bay area physicians in 68 medical specialties. As a partner for 12 years, the list compiled by Best Doctors, Inc. is a wonderful community resource and we hope it will assist you or a family member in finding a specialist should a health scare arise. There is still time for a beach escape to the Omni Amelia Island Plantation in north Florida. Recently completing a “re-imagination” of new guest rooms, lobby, pools and conference center, the resort combines the perfect blend of activity and relaxation. Perfect for a romantic escape or fun for the entire family. In METROHome, there are two wonderful properties that are both available for sale as a possible dream home. If you are looking for a new home, we present two waterfront options. In HomeDetails, we’ve found a few of our favorite things in the color for fall — purple. It’s time to get social and there are lots of charitable events coming up. We hope to see you out and about. Be sure to Like us on Facebook at Tampa Bay Metro and visit www.tampabaymetro.com for the latest information and event happenings.

Irreplaceably You By Nancy Seijas-Kipnis

Fashion icon Coco Chanel once stated that in order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different. This season’s fall fashion forecast surely offers an abundance of room for individual style exploration. Fall fashion trendwatchers are predicting the season will include a panorama of color from pretty pastels to gem-like hues; menswear textiles; a grunge revival; 50’s silhouettes (think seaming, cinching, and flaring), and all things collegiateinspired. Officials at Neiman Marcus, Tampa’s local trend setter, suggest that in addition violets, rocker chic, pointed toe shoes, lace noir, and red as the new neutral will be hot, hot, hot for fall. For inspiration on how to conquer the season, make sure to attend CITY: Fashion+Art+Culture, at the Tampa Museum of Art on September 20. “The Tampa Museum of Art CITY event is an opportunity to celebrate the art in fashion while raising awareness and funds for art education in the Tampa Bay area. Each year, Tampa’s best dressed join us for an evening of fashion and delectable fare,” said Renee Mihale Farmer, Event Chair. “This year, we are pleased to add a special component to the evening. Unique gowns designed by local students and inspired by the art in the Museum will be featured and auctioned. Join us at the Museum where style is always in fashion.” Guests of CITY will enjoy a live runway featuring fall looks from Neiman Marcus; delectable tastings from Carmel Café, Eddie V’s, and entertainment from DJ Papi. Proceeds from CITY support the Museum’s education initiatives.

8th Annual Rays On The Runway When: July 11, 2013 Where: Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, St. Petersburg The summer sizzled as the Rays Wives hosted the 8th Annual Rays on the Runway, presented by Bright House Networks to benefit The Children’s Dream Fund. The evening kicked off with light hors d’oeuvres and open bar with a meet and mingle with the players, who graciously signed autographed balls. The “Boys of Summer” Rays players, wives and girlfriends along with eight dream children, strolled down the runway in the hottest summer fashions by Tommy Bahama and Penelope T Boutique. The children wore the latest designs from Don Me Now Boutique, FiFi Ruffles and the Tampa Bay Rays Store. Emcee Dick Crippen and Executive Director of the Children’s Dream Fund, Cynthia Lake, welcomed everyone prior to the show and then hosted the live auction, where guests could donate to make dreams come true for children facing life-threatening illness. Among the Rays players and their ladies in attendance included Ben and Julianna Zobrist, Luke Scott, Matt Moore and Anna Orlando, Chris Archer, Sam and Sarah Fuld, Alex Cobb and Kelly Reynolds, Brandon and Blair Gomes, Matt Joyce and Brittany Svengard and Evan Longoria and Jaime Edmondson. Martinis for Moffitt: The Bay Area Advisors hosted one of the hottest parties of the summer at the Straz Center to benefit Moffitt Cancer Center’s research programs. The record crowd of nearly 800 enjoyed martinis, silent auction items, aerialists, breakdancer performing and DJ music and dancing. JCIII and Associates generously stepped up as the presenting sponsor and Kass Shuler was the VIP sponsor. | Celebrate Sinatra: The 16th Annual Celebrate Sinatra had a last minute location change, but nobody seemed to mind at Ken Walters’ annual salute to Frank and his cronies and all found their way to the Cuban Club. At the black tie optional event, guests sipped complimentary martinis during the first hour and hors d’oeuvres by Bernini. Later guests enjoyed the cigar bar, dancing to Tom Tiratto’s 17 piece orchestra with songs by Lisa Casalino. Ashley Locheed and Paul Phillips and Ignacia Marin’s Latin Lovers also entertained. | PJ’s, Panties & Prosecco: PJ's, Panties & Prosecco was held earlier this summer at Datz Dough and was hosted by Sarah Balmer, Roia Barrios, and Nicole Hubbard to raise awareness for Redefining Refuge (RR), the first safe house in Tampa Bay for child sex trafficking victims. Guests brought pajamas and panties as their donation and the generous attendees provided over100 bags of new pajamas and panties and presented them to Redefining Refuge, founder Natasha Nascimento. | Circle of Red Soirée: The American Heart Association’s Circle of Red celebrated a successful Go Red for Women Luncheon, held earlier in May, at a soirée at Ocean Prime. Executive Director, Kate Sawa welcomed the group and Go Red For Women Chair, Katie Pemble, along with new AHA Metro Board Chair, Rhea Law, who spoke about the importance of heart health and the impact of the American Heart Association’s research and initiatives in the community.

METROLife B Scene

As summer winds down, it appears the social scene is re-invigorating itself in Tampa. Kids are back to school and Tampa’s finest are back in action. Dine Tampa Bay just wrapped its fourth installment with nearly 100 restaurants participating, as burgeoning foodies descended on some of Tampa Bay’s finest hot spots. Another hottie made her way through Tampa, as Bethenny Frankel stopped in at Grille 116 to host her “Calling All My Girls” event to promote her new talk show, “Bethenny” which premieres this month. The fourth annual Dine Tampa Bay Restaurant week ran this past August as a partnership with Visit Tampa Bay, Visit St. Pete Clearwater and the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. Nearly 100 participating restaurants in the Bay area including SideBern’s, Mise en Place, Flemings, 717 South, Donatello, Irish 31, Ocean Prime, Birch and Vine, Parkshore Grill and more, gave an opportunity for locals and visitors to experience some of Tampa Bay’s finest restaurants at a great value. The purpose of restaurant week is to drive business and increase sales for area restaurants during a slow period and promotes the area as a premier culinary destination. Stella Artois was on board again this year as a lead sponsor. This year two events kicked off Dine Tampa Bay, The Sip N Sizzle bartending competition at the Birchwood, and the Celebri-chef Cook off at TPepin’s Hospitality, each judged by local media personalities. In the Sip N Sizzle, Bon Appetit’s Kenny Lang took first place but faced stiff competition from Anise’s Justin Gray, Mise en Place’s Audrey Grounds, PCI’s Brandon Redshaw, Donatello’s Gino Tiozzo, and SideBern’s Dean Hurst. In the Celebri-chef cookoff, the team of Fox 13’s Charley Belcher and Fleming’s Brandon Mikiluch were the top vote of the night, with Jen Holloway and Jason Cline of Birch and Vine coming in second, and Chad Johnson of SideBern’s paired with Brendan McLaughlin of ABC Action News, rounding out the top three. Defending Champion Mike

Swords of Irish 31 put up a great fight with Ernest Hooper of the Tampa Bay Times. The “Calling All My Girls” tour with Bethenny Frankel came to Tampa and hosted an exclusive event for 150 people at Grille 116. Assorted Skinnygirl prizes and giveaways, along with personal interactions and games with Bethenny made the evening fun for all. Winners were chosen from a contest presented by Fox 13. Frankel’s talk show cameras followed her as she previewed mini-segments for the crowd that will appear on her upcoming talk show, premiering this month. The well heeled crowd did not disappoint, and included Allison Vetter, Coco Soto, Ann Bailin, Veronica Swiatek, Katie Sommers, Ro Patel, and Marisa Langford. Want to B Scene? Modern Lakefront Living in Carrollwood By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Raif Fluker

When searching for a dream home, many times families are looking for waterfront living. Look no further than this custom-designed home in Carrollwood. The modern, architectural masterpiece is located on White Trout Lake, one of Tampa’s most coveted private lakes. The private dock and boat lift are ideal to store the boat, and take advantage of skiing that is permitted on the lake. Built in 1997, the two-story home is over 8,000 square-feet and sits on over a half-acre. The soaring 22 foot ceilings and oversized windows bring in natural light, showcasing stunning lakefront views from nearly every room. The spacious floor plan allows for easy entertaining downstairs with formal living room, breakfast room, and kitchen and family room combination. The separate game room and bar allows guests to relax and have fun without roaming through the entire home. The enormous eat-in kitchen is a chef’s delight with Thermador & Sub-Zero appliances. The staircase to the upstairs has custom glass artwork created by Steve Brewster, former football player with the Oakland Raiders. Brewster currently resides in Oklahoma and is still fabricating pieces of art.

The lavish master bedroom has its own sitting area with fireplace, spa-like bath with garden tub and separate shower stall. Dual sinks and extralarge his and hers closets with a central dressing area, makes getting ready a breeze. There is no need to head downstairs in the morning for that first cup of coffee, as the master suite has a morning bar and mini-kitchen to make morning or late-night snacks. The over-sized laundry area upstairs can also serve as a gift wrap room or other space to complete crafts. The tropical outdoor terrace overlooks the lake and features an outdoor kitchen and heated pool. A three car garage allows plenty of storage for the vehicles and plenty of parking for guests with a circular drive. The location of the home in the quiet community of Carrollwood offers an easy 15 minute commute into downtown Tampa. M This home is currently listed for sale at $1,500,000 with the Scherer Reder Group of RE/MAX Bay to Bay. For additional information, contact Rick Scherer at 813.230.5472 or Kevin Reder at 813.758.5969.

“We all have the power to make a real difference in our own care or that of a loved one. David Seligman, Chairman and CEO at Best Doctors, Inc.,

Despite the best efforts of dedicated, time-strapped doctors, misdiagnosis still happens far too often. In today’s overburdened health care system, it’s harder than ever to have enough time to do the deep thinking needed to carefully examine each piece of a patient’s case. From a care and policy perspective, there is much that can and should be done to acknowledge and address the problem, but the private sector is taking proactive steps to combat the issue. Many of the world’s leading corporations and health plans are offering expert second opinions and other services such as KHOSLQJ HPSOR\HHV ¿QG WKH ULJKW GRFWRU RU GHFLGH RQ WKH EHVW WUHDWPHQW RSWLRQV in an effort to ensure that employees get the right diagnosis. The truth is everyone must be involved when it comes to getting the right diagnosis – doctors, patients, hospitals, employers, and policymakers alike. Misdiagnosis doesn’t have to happen. Founded in 1989 by Harvard Medical School professors, Best Doctors, Inc. is transforming and improving health care. The global company, headquartered in Boston, serves more than 30 million members in every major region of the world. The company works with the best five percent of doctors to find the right diagnoses and right treatments, and seamlessly integrates its services with employers’ other health-related benefits. More than a traditional second opinion, Best Doctors delivers a comprehensive evaluation of a patient’s medical condition — providing value to both patients and treating physicians. By utilizing Best Doctors, members have access to the brightest minds in medicine to ensure the right diagnosis and treatment plan. Best Doctors’ team of researchers conducts a biennial poll using the methodology that mimics the informal peer-to-peer process doctors themselves use to identify the right specialists for their patients. Using a polling method and balloting software, that Gallup® has audited and certified, they gather the

insight and experience of tens of thousands of leading specialists all over the country, while confirming their credentials and specific areas of expertise. The result is the Best Doctors in America® List, which includes the nation’s most respected specialists and outstanding primary care physicians in the nation. These are the doctors that other doctors recognize as the best in their fields. They cannot pay a fee and are not paid to be listed and cannot nominate or vote for themselves. It is a list which is truly unbiased and respected by the medical profession and patients alike as the source of top quality medical information. Friedreich’s Ataxia Update: University of South Florida Pilot Study Natchez Hanson is a math and statistics teacher in the Polk country school system. She also happens to have Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), a progressive neuromuscular disease that causes imbalance, incoordination, visual, speech problems, and cardiac disease. FA caused Natchez to have difficulty running and keeping up with other children when she was a child. But she soldiered on with her daily life, attending school every day despite continued neurologic symptoms. Her proudest moment in life was walking across the stage with her walker to receive her college diploma. The University of South Florida (USF) Ataxia Research Center is partnering with the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) to fight for a treatment and cure for FA. Dr. Theresa Zesiewicz, center director, and the center at USF are leading a multisite double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to test a new drug by Edison Pharmaceuticals that may help to improve symptoms of this devastating disease. The center is also running a clinical research study on cardiac dysfunction in FA, as well as studying better ways to monitor disease progression. This year, the USF and FARA educational symposium will be held on September 5, 2013 at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in downtown Tampa.

ust north of Jacksonville lies an island resort that beckons with the ideal blend of nature, ocean and hospitality. A recent “re-imagination” of the Omni Amelia Island Plantation resort gained 155 new guest rooms, including 27 suites, a new 30,000 square-foot conference center, new lobby area with floor-to-ceiling windows, and two oceanfront swimming pools. The resort offers several fall packages, including an “Authentic Amelia” escape for stays through Nov. 31. This is a great escape for ‘foodies’ with one-of-a-kind, farm-to-table or dock-to-dish dining experiences and luxury oceanfront rooms. The special package includes a welcome basket of locally sourced snacks, private tour of a local farm with Chef Daven Wardynski, a four-hour fishing charter with

Amelia Angler Outfitters and Chef, plus a seven-course dinner with wine pairings. The Omni Amelia Island Planation is about a four-hour drive from the Bay area, or a quick flight into the Jacksonville airport and a 45 minute drive to the Plantation. The resort offers numerous possibilities for a romantic escape or fun for the entire family. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean in a private cabana, or sunbathe on the nearly 3.5 miles of private beach. With nearly 1,350 acres to explore, visit the Nature Center to view the local critters and learn about the animal species that inhabit the island. For the sports enthusiasts, there are 54 holes of golf and 23 tennis courts to keep active. For additional fun, guests can take Segway tours of the property, after proper instruction by an experienced staff.

Surrounded by marsh, there is plenty of bird watching while kayaking, or paddleboarding available through Amelia Angler Outfitters. The shopping village on property offers a variety of boutiques with unique keepsakes, clothing and gifts. Grab a delicious pizza at Natural Slice with its variety of pies and surf-inspired shop inside. The Spa is the ideal place to relax and feel pampered with a soothing massage or facial, or manicure and pedicure. Spend a fun afternoon off property in historic Fernandina Beach which offers great galleries, antique shops, and quaint restaurants. A horse-drawn carriage ride is a must, and offers a tour through town narrated with history and facts of the area. M Call 1-800-The-Omni, or visit www.omniameliaislandplantation.com.

Rise of the Clones Oregon Chardonnay Comes of Age | By Kevin Pelley

Oregon’s Willamette Valley

O

regon’s wine history is still in its infancy. David Lett, of Eyrie Vineyards, is credited with planting the first Pinot Noir grapes in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in 1965. Since then, Oregon wines have been met with critical acclaim from around the world. Perhaps the event that helped solidify Oregon’s reputation the most, for fine wine production, came in 1979 during the Gault-Millau French Wine Olympiades when Eyrie Vineyard’s 1975 Pinot Noir placed in the top 10, out of 330 entries from around the world, and was named the best Pinot Noir. Robert Drouhin, of the prestigious Joseph Drouhin in Burgundy, arranged for a rematch and put the

84

September 2013

Eyrie Vineyard Pinot Noir in competition against a lineup of France’s best wines. The rematch winner was a bottle of Joseph Drouhin’s 1959 ChambolleMusigny Grand Cru. David Lett’s Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir finished a very close second. Not bad considering it was just the sixth vintage of Willamette Valley wine, while Burgundy has been cultivating Pinot Noir since 100AD! Less then a decade later, the Drouhin family invested over $10 million in Oregon’s future by opening the state-ofthe-art Domaine Drouhin Oregon, thus helping solidify Oregon’s presence in the world wine scene. So with all of Oregon’s success with Pinot Noir, one might assume that

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Oregon Chardonnay would be having similar success. After all, Chardonnay is the white co-star of Pinot Noir in the Burgundy region of France, and Oregon proponents tout the Willamette Valley’s climate as the closest thing to Burgundy in the world. But surprisingly, Oregon Chardonnay has struggled to achieve the same lofty heights as Oregon Pinot Noir. In fact, Oregon Chardonnay has been fairly criticized for its harsh acidity, green flavors and lack of finesse. Well, it turns out that in the mid 1960s when a group of fledgling winemakers were trying to put the Willamette Valley on the world wine map, they were happy to receive vines and plant matter wherever continued on page 86 they could.

While they received the majority of plant material for Pinot Noir from Burgundy, the Chardonnay vines came by way of California. As it turns out, these Chardonnay vines from California were the wrong clone of Chardonnay for Oregon’s cooler, wetter Willamette Valley. That’s right, not all grape varieties produce the same style of grape from vine to vine. There are many different types of ‘clones’ of each grape variety. Each clone possesses a unique flavor profile, cluster size and maturation date. The vast majority of Oregon’s first wave of Chardonnay plantings were from California and were Selection 108 (U. C. Davis clones 4 and 5). It wasn’t until the mid 1970s when David Adelsheim, of Adelsheim Vineyards, visited Burgundy and began to figure it out. He saw that producers were harvesting the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir roughly at the same time. That was not the case back in Oregon, where Chardonnay needed additional time, sometimes as much as two to three weeks, to mature fully. Since Oregon’s Willamette Valley is a cool region, the fruit sometimes never achieved proper ripeness before being harvested, resulting in green, harsh and vegetal wines. Since this realization, producers over the last two decades

continued from page 84

86

...Oregon is producing superb, pure and varietally correct wines with balanced acidity, freshness and perfect ripeness...

have been gradually grafting over to Dijon clones from Burgundy, which ripen earlier and are better suited to the cooler climate in Oregon. Unfortunately, the process has been slow, and demand for Oregon Chardonnay has been nearly nonexistent given its previous track record of inconsistency. After Oregon’s slow start with the Chardonnay grape and poor clonal selection, the day has finally arrived for this noble grape variety in the Willamette Valley. Today, Oregon is producing superb, pure and varietally correct wines with balanced acidity, freshness and perfect ripeness. Those who have previously written off

Chardonnay from Oregon, owe themselves the pleasure of tasting what the region is capable of producing. Particularly in the last five years or so, Oregon’s Chardonnays have been extraordinary and worthy of attention, but still flying below the radar for most wine lovers. The time to ignore Oregon Chardonnay is over. Do yourself a favor and locate a bottle from a reputable producer, and you will find a wine somewhere between the style of California and Burgundy, and possessing the best attributes from both regions. 2010 Evening Land “Summum” Chardonnay $79.95

2010 Domaine Serene “Evenstad Reserve” Chardonnay $59.95

2009 Chehalem “Ian’s Reserve” Chardonnay $35.95

This is the absolute pinnacle of what Oregon Chardonnay can be with its crystalline purity of fruit, laser beam of acidity and clean minerality. Evening Land is a joint project between Dominique Lafon from Burgundy’s Domaine des Comtes Lafon and Isabelle Meunier. Together they produce this amazing wine with flavors of crushed wet stone, dried pineapple, lemon curd and cloves.

Owners Ken and Grace Evenstad are now producing this cuvee styled Chardonnay from their estate vineyards in the Red Hills of Dundee. Aromatic and beautiful, the “Evenstad Reserve” offers flavors of lemon oil, citrus blossom, tart Bartlett pear, nutmeg and subtle vanilla tones, all backed with refreshing acidity and a hint of crushed stones.

The fruit for this Chardonnay is sourced entirely from the Stoller Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. The soil is entirely Jory, a red volcanic clay, and produces elegant and delicious wines. The 2009 Ian’s Reserve exhibits fruit flavors of baked apple, white peach and citrus along with notes of pastry dough and toasted hazelnuts. At $35.95 per bottle it represents an exceptional value for such a quality wine.

pened in May 2013, as part of Frank Chivas’ Baystar Restaurant Group, Salt Rock Tavern has become a local favorite in Oldsmar. A menu that offers a variety of upscale pub-type food, will satisfy everyone in the family. “Business has been great and with Rumba next door, we’ve created great synergy,” said Andre Farfan, general manager. “Within two miles, were a good destination. Competition is good and that is a compliment to everyone in the area.” Whether it is a quick appetizer and happy hour or a hearty dinner, Salt Rock Tavern has tempting dishes to meet whatever dining experience you are seeking. For avid sports fans, a nice touch in the booths are the small flat screen TVs that allow you to watch your

favorite team while grabbing a bite to eat. Additional TVs are mounted on the wall for those at the bar or table seating. Great starters include several seafood dishes - rock ‘n shrimp, jumbo crusted shrimp, seared ahi tuna napoleon and crab stuffed portabella. Farfan says that three of the most popular menu items are the just caught fish, a beer brine soaked rotisserie chicken and shrimp & grits. “We catch our own fish and cut them right here in the kitchen,” says Farfan. The menu changes periodically to feature the freshest, locally sourced foods available. “We support local business and make all of our dishes from scratch,” Farfan said. “The buns for the burgers are made locally and the dough for our flatbreads comes from Pane’ Rustica.” Salt Rock
