Publisher’s Notes Summer days are filled with sun, fun and plenty of relaxation. We have assembled a list of 100 things to do this summer to entertain and delight. Be adventurous with a helicopter ride or skydiving or relax with a stroll through all the local museums. We’ve also discovered plenty of opportunities to get your food and drink on at local events including WaZoo, Rumfest or a Pub Crawl through Ybor. We’ve gathered a few essentials for a day at the beach in METROStyle and have four drink recipes to create a fruity and splashy addition to any backyard BBQ. The casual and contemporary designs of DOXA’s Jaime Rogers, are displayed throughout the beautiful South Tampa home in METROHome. The neutral and earthy tones combine with found pieces to create a comfortable home. With an abundance of new restaurants on the scene, METRO visited Souzou Fusion in St. Petersburg and discovered imaginative and inspired Asian cuisine. Wine columnist Kevin Pelley discusses the problems of corks in his column. Take a read and realize that screw tops may have an advantage. Getaways features a quick escape to the Waterstone Hotel in Boca Raton. METRO is always happy to support local charitable events. Two upcoming, not-to-be-missed events are Bay Area Advisors – Martinis for Moffitt and Celebrate Sinatra – both on July 25. We hope to see you there!

Museums are great spots to take cover from the sweltering temperatures and humidity of the summer in Tampa Bay. The Tampa Museum of Art is excited to introduce the Tampa Bay community to two new summer exhibitions, The American Spirit: American Painting and Sculpture from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and In Living Color: Andy Warhol and Contemporary Printmaking from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation. “American Spirit: Paintings and Sculpture from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art explores the majestic panoramic landscapes illustrating the relationship between spirituality, nature and humankind of the 19th century through the early 20th century,” said Tampa Museum of Art Executive Director, Michael Tomor. “The images of the industrial urban centers of the

Regionalists painting along the North Eastern seaboard, from Philadelphia to New York City, The American Spirit reflects the remarkable talents of American painters from the Hudson River School to The Eight, as well as, the incredible holdings of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.” The more than 50 paintings and eight sculptures highlight rendered landscapes, everyday objects and narrates an important chapter in American cultural history by artists including Thomas Cole, John Kensett, Albert Bierstadt, Robert Henri and John Sloan. Also on exhibit are works by Andy Warhol (1928-1987), who was the central figure of the American Pop art movement. Included in the exhibit are portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Mao Zadong, the splashy camouflage series and the controversial Electric Chair portfolio. “In Living Color illustrates the next

chapter of American ingenuity, post 1960, as prints are elevated to a Fine Art under the influence and talents of Andy Warhol through his printmaking and screen printing process, across three decades,” said Tomor. “Works by Chuck Close, Keith Haring and Frank Stella, round out this collection of works from Pop culture through Post Modern thinking of American icons.” In Living Color is divided into five sections — experimentation, emotion, experience, subversion, and attitude. In each, Warhol’s work is placed in conversation with that of other artists of the postwar era, who use color as a tool to shape how we interpret and respond to images. Warhol’s omnivorous curiosity resulted in an enormous body of work that spanned every available medium and most importantly, contributed to the collapse of boundaries between high and low culture. — RMP

From the kickoff Gala Winemaker Dinner at Haven featuring wines of the Spire Collection, to the educational wine seminars at the Epicurean Theatre, to the finale Bern’s Winefest WineMaker Dinner, those with a palette were filled with decadence and indulgence. Defining Lines and Soothing Tones The Art of Southern Comfort and Sensibility By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Elias ThĂŠroux

fter relocating to Tampa from Boca Raton, Mark and Renee Radi embarked on an extensive search for their new home. A Harbour Island rental property provided temporary housing that allowed them to view a variety of single family residences, where the couple, their son, daughter and the family’s Jack Russell terrier, could comfortably live. “We really wanted to live somewhere that offered a sense of community,” said Renee Radi. “We looked all over but just weren’t finding the right fit for our family.” The hunt for their next home focused on spacious floor plans, a South Tampa location in a family friendly neighborhood and features ranging from roomy interiors, to backyards big enough for entertaining. Checking out select, prospective properties also provided the pair with an opportunity to see some stunning interiors. Even if the house was not quite right for their particular needs, the Radis were still impressed by the signature style of a local designer, whose work they viewed during those visits. Eventually they succeeded in finding what they wanted in Beach Park, where a two-story house was being built. The quiet, tree-shaded

residential street also provided an ideal environment to raise their seven-year-old daughter, Bronwyn, and son, four-yearold, Grayson. Buying the home was one thing, furnishing it and finishing the halls, walls and floors was another. Fortunately, along with their new address, the Radis had inadvertently discovered the ideal interior designer to transform their new five-bedroom, four-and-a half-bathroom space into its own showplace. They hired Jaime Rogers, founder of the award-winning, Tampa-based DOXA Design Group, and began collaboratively defining the personality and designing their new place. The house was still under construction when the Radis selected it for its spaciousness and open design, featuring high ceilings and large windows that keep main living areas light and bright. Because the builder-designed property was not yet move-in ready, there was still time to customize various fixtures, finishes and features and mold the home into a more perfect fit for the Radi’s style preferences and lifestyle. Broadening the patio deck’s covered area to better accommodate their love for spending time outdoors while swimming, relaxing or dining, was among the changes made. The use of defining lines, soothing colors and modern accents mixed with antiques, helped to give each room a distinctive, dignified appeal that still managed to remain cozy and comfortable. Furniture fabrics had to be durable but beautiful, light fixtures functional yet fashionable and artworks both whimsical and fun. Set against cool, neutral colors, the original works purchased specifically for the residence added color, intrigue and impact to the living space. “It is a light, luminous, clean, crisp and classic design that represents the tradition of Southern sensibility,” said Rogers. “Regardless of the project, humble or luxe, the constant thread that runs through my work would be clean lines,

“I had never worked with a designer before so I had to ask Jaime how it worked,” said Renee. “She identifies your point of view and then makes it come through.”

classic pieces, genuine materials and strong silhouettes. My interiors are usually monochromatic. That’s not to say they’re void of color. I just rarely use more than one and much prefer bathing a space in various tones of a singular color.” Renee refers to the art collection displayed throughout the house as “jewelry,” that accents the gallery-white walls. Finding such different, dramatic and desirable pieces is just one of the ways Rogers helps clients realize their ultimate vision. “Our resources are pulled from all over. We regularly attend national and international furniture, art and design shows to keep our clients informed and our library fresh. Much of the art comes from our gallery in downtown Tampa, where we represent several internationally acclaimed Tampa-based artists, such as Dominique LaBouvie and the late Ybor City icon, Theo Wujcik. I love pieces with a little history. We shop flea markets, antique shops as well as a plethora of online venues,” Rogers added. “Every job is different and begins prior to move-in. The Radis gave me a lot of freedom.” The Radis have also paid Rogers the ultimate compliment by re-hiring her to help create the interior design of their next house, a custom-built home nearby Bayshore Boulevard. uests staying at the Waterstone Resort & Marina receive all the benefits of a flagged hotel (Doubletree by Hilton), with the feel and service of a boutique hotel. Just over a year-old renovation has created a unique property that blends coastal chic and breezy artistic design. The hotel commissioned artwork from local artists in the library and entry areas to blend two components – water and stone, that inspired the name of the property. Each of the 139 guest rooms, including 11 suites, offer private balconies and water views. The hotel is located on Lake Boca at the Atlantic Ocean inlet and one block from the beach. Available on-site are various water sports, boating and sailing offerings, along with bike rentals. Guests can coordinate for a catamaran cruise, jet skiing, kayaking, surfing or stand-up paddle boarding, or be at the beach in under five minutes on a complimentary shuttle ride.

Dine al fresco for a romantic dinner at Boca Landing – with the stunning views of Lake Boca and the Intracoastal, or inside with the nicely appointed art-inspired décor. Chef Matt Mixon has created a menu that reflects his French and Italian heritage. Start with the Gumbas Crispy Fried Calamari, or a Grand Platter from the Raw Bar that includes oysters, clams, shrimp, tuna tartar, rock shrimp ceviche and lobster tail. Entrees include a variety of fish selections including the Mango Mustard Glazed Atlantic Salmon, Jerk Mahi-Mahi or Grilled Swordfish. The Double Cut Pork Chop served with mushroom

risotto and brussel sprouts, or a NY Strip or Filet Mignon will satisfy the meat lovers. The Lobster Mac & Cheese is a nice side complement to the meal. Enjoy a sweet ending with the Molten Chocolate Cake, Carrot Pudding Cake or Creme Brulé. Waterstone Bar & Grill offers Boca Raton’s only dock-to-dine on the Intracoastal Waterway. It offers casual breakfast, lunch and dinner menus in a relaxed, breezy, outdoor setting. METRO

Cork Tainted Wines By Kevin Pelley

Summer 2015 www.TampaBayMetro.com

H

ave you ever opened a bottle of wine expecting a delicious and aromatic beverage, only to find that it tastes and smells like a moldy basement or wet cardboard? Then you have had the unfortunate experience of having a cork tainted wine. A ‘corked wine’ started out with perfectly good juice that went into the bottle, only to be spoiled by a compound (TCA) found in some corks. TCA is a chemical compound (2, 4, 6 trichloroanisole) that makes perfectly good wine taste and smell terrible. Though harmless, TCA can be naturally present in cork, wood, fruits and vegetables. Prepackaged vegetables from the supermarket are loaded with TCA. A common offender is bagged baby carrots, which often give the same moldy basement aromas associated with TCA. Luckily, when they are cooked and sauced, the unpleasant

$10 bottle of mass-produced wine, and lower in a premium, small-production bottling. What is cork? Technically it is bark from a cork oak tree most commonly found in Portugal. Given the ever increasing demand for corks, cork oak farmers are lowering their standards for farming and have helped exasperate this problem. Cork oak bark is supposed to be harvested from mature trees (25-30 year old) every nine years and must be several feet above ground, to ensure the TCA compound commonly found in soil isn’t present in the bark. However, the pressure to keep up with demand has persuaded many farmers to sell inferior, immature cork grown close to the ground in the marketplace. These shortcuts have helped cause the rise in corked wines. Corks can range in price from pennies to up to a couple dollars

used in Austria and to a lesser extent in Germany. One Napa Valley producer, Von Strasser, bottles their Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon ($50) with this glass cork, fitted with a small plastic o-ring, so that cork taint will never be an issue. However, the Vinolok is expensive, requires manual bottling due to the lack of compatible equipment among common bottling lines and hasn’t been proven to properly age wines due to its relative newness. Finally, there is the dreaded screw cap, the Rodney Dangerfield of wine closures. It gets zero respect from consumers, collectors and sommeliers. However, it might be the most sustainable, affordable and foolproof method of enclosing a wine. Also known as the Stelvin closure, it doesn’t require a knife and small tool to extract a wedged hunk

The biggest fear for a winemaker, who has spent a year in the vineyard and cellar trying to make the finest product they can produce, is that the consumer will not know that the bottle is cork tainted and just assume they don’t like said winemaker’s wine and never purchase that brand’s wine again. flavors and aromas are masked or cooked away. But with wine, these flavors ruin the experience and the bottle is rendered undrinkable. The industry standard for corked bottles is between 3 percent and 10 percent, depending if you talk to the cork industry or wine producers. Either percentage is unacceptable. If 10 percent of the milk you purchased was bad because of the closure, or one in ten steaks you purchased from the butcher was bad because of the paper they wrapped it in, this would be unacceptable. The milk closure or paper wrapper would be replaced with a more suitable packaging. So why is this allowed in the world of wine? Why is there a double standard for oenophiles? My experience over the last twenty-something years in the industry has led me to believe the percentage of corked wine is somewhere between 3 percent - 10 percent, with the incidence being much higher in the

each depending on quality and size. So clearly, not all corks are created equally. Are synthetic corks the answer? Many producers a decade or two ago thought so and converted to synthetic cork closures only to find they had their own set of drawbacks including premature oxidation issues and consumer misconceptions. What producers didn’t know was that some synthetic corks shrank in size minuscule amounts a year or two after being placed into a bottle, only to allow tiny amounts of oxygen to come into contact with the wine, thus turning it into vinegar. Sadly, this put a few top quality wineries out of business. Now, synthetic corks are produced in a different and better way that doesn’t cause this premature-oxidation issue, but consumer skepticism remains. Some wine producers believe in a glass cork called Vinolok. Vinolok was created in 2003 by Alcoa and is commonly

of tree bark from the neck. You’ll never get a corked bottle. And, studies have proven that wines age slower and better under Stelvin than cork. Twenty-five year trials have been done with some of Australia’s top wines comparing cork and Stelvin and found those with screw caps appear more youthful, bright and vibrant, than their counterparts with nature cork. But, many consumers associate screw caps with cheap, inferior wines. Luckily, some maverick producers such as PlumpJack are bottling their premium reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($300) with the Stelvin closure. Hopefully, other wineries will choose this same approach and seek out better, more reliable and sustainable ways to cap their wines, so wine drinkers can make cork tainted wines a thing of the past.
