Publisher’s Notes We put our hearts into every issue of METRO. This issue has just a little more, as we partner for the 11th year with the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and we gladly help raise awareness for the cause and go red. The Community Leaders with Heart photo, showcases those individuals and companies that also believe in the mission of the Tampa Bay Heart Association/Stroke Association. The deep wine color of Marsala has been selected by Pantone as the color for 2015. Check out METRO Style and METRO Family Style, for a variety of beauty and fashion essentials. We congratulate the Museum of Fine Arts in celebrating their Golden Anniversary with a new exhibition, Monet to Matisse — On the French Coast that will run through May 31. Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is a local treasure and will host its black-tie gala, Karamu XXVII, on April 11. The funds raised this year will benefit the Zoo’s manatee conservation program and manatee hospital. With a rebounding real estate market, METRO looks at four areas in the Bay area to see how much house you can buy. We looked at Carrollwood, South Tampa, Pinellas Beaches and Old Northeast. The weather is perfect this time of year and it’s a great time to get outdoors and celebrate the remaining Gasparilla festivities. Time to get your art on at Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts on Feb. 28 – March 1 in downtown Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The Gasparilla Music Festival runs March 7- 8 with more than 40 bands on four stages. The Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival takes place March 24 – 29 at the Channelside Bay Plaza in a pop-up film experience.

Museum of Fine Arts Celebrates 50th Anniversary Monet to Matisse – On the French Coast By Ronda M. Parag
Auguste Renoir, Figures on the Beach, 1890, Oil on canvas The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Robert Lehman Collection, 1975
The Museum of Fine Arts opened its doors to the Tampa Bay community in 1965 and celebrates 50 years of bringing world class art and exhibitions to the area, with an exhibition of masterpieces in Monet to Matisse – On the French Coast. The French artists looking for peace and serenity escaped the city and urban congestion to the smaller coastal towns of both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of France. The water, light and sky served as their inspiration and renewal. In addition, the ports, harbors and commercial and family fishing paintings are represented. The beach and the port resonate with the Tampa Bay area. Jean Dufy’s Marseille brings to mind our downtown waterfront, with its sailboats dotting the bay and an expanse of buildings, resembling the Vinoy, in the background. Major artists represented in the show include Claude Monet,
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Paul Signac, Max Beckmann, and the talented brothers Raoul and Jean Dufy. The vast majority of the works have never been seen before in Florida or the Southeast. In keeping with the Museum’s golden anniversary, many of the paintings are festive in spirit, suggesting holidays and vacations. Two paintings by Picasso from the 1930s are magical. Dr. Kenneth Wayne is the guest curator, collaborating with Chief Curator Jennifer Hardin and Curatorial Assistant, Sabrina Hughes to bring the exhibition to St. Petersburg. The exhibits include paintings from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art and The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Private collectors in both the U.S. and Europe are sharing their treasures.
Monet to Matisse – On the French Coast is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts through May 31, 2015. For ticket information and hours, please call 727.896.2667 or visit www.fine-arts.org.

The evening’s festivities included a silent auction, musical entertainment provided by Dueling Pianos and a Kosher buffet. The 2015 Hillel Academy honorees were Jack Ross, Jewish Community Center Executive Director, as “Producer of the Year” and Hillel Academy parents, Sandy and Sabrina Solomon, for “Musical of the Year.” The Solomons are founders of Hillel Academy’s Isaac B. Solomon Cultural Music Initiative. Event co-chairs were Carolyn Fink, Bonnie Amsterdam-Miele and Susan Marlow. Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo Presents Karamu XXVII An Exotic Evening of Light, Inspired by a Chinese Lantern Celebration This spring, visitors to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo will be immersed into a radiant sea of lights for Zoominations, A Chinese Lantern Festival. This illuminating experience inspired the theme for the Zoo’s annual signature gala, Karamu, “an exotic evening of light,” on Saturday, April 11. Karamu, from the Swahili word for “party,” has raised more than $3 million in support of animal care and education programs at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo over the last 27 years. This year’s special evening is dedicated to one of Florida’s most iconic species, the endangered manatee. Funds raised will benefit the Zoo’s internationally-recognized manatee conservation program that provides critical care for injured, sick and orphaned wild manatees. Karamu co-chairs Karessa Lasher and Paola Schifino are avid supporters of manatee conservation efforts. “I feel very honored to be involved with Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and Karamu,” noted Lasher. “As co-chair of this year’s Karamu, we are putting a focus on the conservation efforts of manatees -- a cause that is near and dear to me and many of us here in the Tampa Bay area. Without the Zoo’s Manatee Hospital, many of these beloved animals would not survive their injuries or illnesses. We need your help and support in saving our manatees.” Schifino added, “Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo has nursed over 200 manatees back to health, spending $1 million dollars a year on critical care and receiving minimal public funds. This year’s Karamu will benefit the Manatee Hospital and should help close the financial gap. Please help us support the Zoo in its conservation efforts so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy earth’s bountiful gifts.”

Women are WHY Heart disease remains the No. 1 cause of death in women; it’s not just a man’s disease. Most importantly, 80 percent of cardiac events in both women and men can be prevented. When it comes to defeating heart disease and stroke, change can be the cure. The 2015 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon takes place on Thursday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. at A La Carte Event Pavilion. “The Go Red For Women luncheon promotes heart-health awareness, educates women about their risk of heart disease and stroke, encourages connections in our community and enhances our network of advocates,” said Connie Bessler, CEO of Greystone Healthcare Management and the 2015 Go Red For Women chair. Guests can enjoy a vendor expo with health screenings and activities; a gourmet lunch; a powerful keynote speech; inspiring testimonials from local survivors; and more.
Playing off the American Heart Association’s new brand and anthem, the theme of this year’s event is ‘Life is Why.’ Everyone deserves to live a healthier, longer life. Why? Life. Life is why. “I truly believe in making a difference in the lives of others. Jabil Recognizes Change for Good By Jackie Buckler
Jabil and its employees are no strangers to community engagement and impact. “Our culture is to empower our employees to strive for continuous improvement,” said Bill Muir, Jabil chief operating officer. Muir, an American Heart Association (AHA) Tampa Bay Heart Walk cabinet member and ambassador of heart health, credits Jabil employees for the company’s involvement with the organization. “It seems that everyone has one degree of separation from being impacted by heart disease or stroke, so it makes sense to partner with an organization that educates and promotes cardiovascular health,” Muir said. In previous years, Jabil sponsored an AHA Teaching Gardens and held activities for National Walking Day. Now the company sponsors the Lifestyle Change Award, which kicked off at the 2014 Tampa Bay Heart Walk. Two winners were chosen: Richard Romero, an employee of St. Joseph’s Hospital who lost 160 pounds, and Tamara Clark – a Raymond James employee who lost 151 pounds.
Bill Peters and Bill Muir (center) of Jabil present Tamara Clark (left) and Richard Romero (right) with Lifestyle Change Awards at the 2014 Heart Walk.
“As leaders, we have a responsibility to promote wellness – not just within our companies – but throughout our communities,” said Paul Reilly, CEO of Raymond James and chair of the 2014 Tampa Bay Heart Walk. “The Lifestyle Change Award is a great way to recognize those who have made significant progress toward a heart-healthy lifestyle and inspire others to make positive changes. I’m proud of the extraordinary efforts that earned Tamara this award, and I’m inspired each time I hear success stories
like hers and Richard’s.” The Lifestyle Change Award will be presented monthly to one individual until the November 2015 Heart Walk, where the 12 recipients will be recognized on stage. “We have been blown away with the changes the Lifestyle Change Award recipients have made,” Muir said. When it Comes to Stroke, Think F.A.S.T.
Fast Launch Westshore: Jeanmarie Milla (front and center) and Verizon employees gather around the F.A.S.T. letters at the July 2014 tour launch.
When you hear the word “FAST,” what comes to mind? An Olympic runner? A speeding car? Abstaining from food? When Tampa Bay community members hear the word FAST, Jeanmarie Milla, Verizon Florida Region President, hopes they’ll think of the warning signs of a stroke – the No. 5 cause of death of Americans. “The F.A.S.T. between Verizon and the American Stroke Association to raise awareness about stroke warning signs,” said Milla. F.A.S.T. stands for: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911. Part of the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke campaign, the two organizations kicked off the F.A.S.T. Tour July 2014. Since then, the oversized red letters

have made more than 25 stops and engaged over 7,000 people. “I want a healthier and more aware community,” Milla said. “Cardiovascular diseases are very personal for me. My mom had a stroke several years ago and if we weren’t educated on the signs, she wouldn’t be here today.” Every 40 seconds, someone in America has a stroke. But did you know that 80 percent of strokes are preventable? “Knowledge is key when fighting cardiovascular diseases,” Milla said. For Milla, saving lives can start in the workplace. Internal F.A.S.T. trainings and “Lunch and Learns” have been held for Verizon employees so they can share their knowledge and be prepared to save a life. Let’s Give Florida A Hand
After the tragic death of 14-year-old Burke Cobb, Louisiana became the 17th state to pass legislation requiring high school students to take CPR training. Help Florida become the 21st state to create generations of lifesavers.
Twenty states in the nation have passed legislation that requires high school students to learn hands-on CPR training before they graduate. In less than the time that it takes to watch a 30-minute TV sitcom, these teenagers are provided with a set of lifesaving skills. Ninety percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. That is why the American Heart Association (AHA) has made CPR in Schools its top agenda item for the Florida legislature. “There are 420,000 cases of cardiac arrest per year. If CPR is not performed then, for every minute that passes before the emergency team arrives, the survival rate decreases 10 percent,” said Dr. Robert Sanchez, the director of cardiovascular medicine at Northside Hospital & Tampa Bay Heart Institute,

How Much House Can You Buy? A Real Estate Snap Shot of Four Bay Area Neighborhoods Compiled by Ronda M. Parag
The Tampa Bay real estate market has rebounded and continues to see high demand with low supply. According to the Pinellas Realtor Organization, the year 2014 ended with a 34 percent increase in closed sales and closed out the year with impact. Pinellas County saw year over year increases in closed sales, cash sales, pending listings and new listings. Demand should continue to grow as the economy continues to improve and lower gas prices drive down the mortgage rates. METRO has concentrated on four areas throughout the Bay area — Carrollwood, South Tampa, Old Northeast and Pinellas Beaches, to see how much house your money will buy. From historic to contemporary, there is a mix of homes that are varied in architectural design and location to fit a $300,000, $600,000, $900,000 and above $1.2 budget.

Up-and-Coming Wine Regions to Try in 2015 By Kevin Pelley
N
ow is a great time to be a wine lover. Never in history have there been so many quality wines being produced from around the world. Amazing wines are now coming from far-reaching places around the globe that were not even on wine lists or in wine shops just a decade ago. Interesting grape varietals, new regions and different wines from well established regions, are giving wine lovers an all new set of options to try. While there is always room for enjoying the classics, now is the time to explore some exciting, up-and-coming regions that are producing incredible wines that are destined to be the next generation of classics. Sancerre Rouge While the French AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée) for Sancerre Rouge has been in existence for over 50 years, the region is mostly known for the crisp, minerally white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc. But about 20 percent of the region is planted to the Pinot Noir grape varietal that rivals Burgundy at a fraction of the price. High quality Sancerre Rouge can be found for around $30 per bottle, sometimes less. One fine example is the 2012 Yves et Pierre Martin ‘Chavignol’ Sancerre Rouge with its tart red fruit flavors of raspberry, cranberry and cherry, with earthy notes of mushrooms and damp earth. All the fruit comes from the village of Chavignol, which is also famous for tremendous, unpasteurized goat milk cheese. Just like in Burgundy, the soils in this particular cru are pure limestone which adds a mineral complexity to the red wines. Given Burgundy’s recent price increases, now is the time to explore the captivating, aromatic wines from Sancerre.

Etna Rosso Italy has been called the bottomless well of amazing wines. With twenty distinct wine growing regions and over 1,000 indigenous grape varietals, exploring Italian wine can be a lifelong passion. Given all of Italy’s exciting regions and grapes, perhaps the most intriguing are the wines coming from the Etna Rosso DOC on the island of Sicily. The Etna Rosso DOC, established in 1968, is located between 1,500 - 3,600 feet above sea level on the biggest active volcano in Europe – Mount Etna. The principal grape of the region is Nerello Mascalese which bears a striking resemblance in the glass to Nebbiolo, the grape in Piedmont that is used in Barolo and Barbaresco production. Though pale in color, Nerello Mascalese has high acid and high tannins, making it an ideal candidate for long-term cellaring. The wines it produces are highly aromatic, loaded with mineral flavors, undoubtedly from the volcanic soils, and are delicious with red fruits, dried flowers and spice notes. Though not inexpensive, the red wines from the Etna Rosso DOC are a must try for wine lovers this year. One favorite is from the famed importer Marc de Grazia’s own Le Vigne di Eli winery. The 2011 Le Vigne di Eli Etna Rosso ‘Moganazzi – Volta Sciara’ ($50) is a single cru wine that rivals a Barolo twice its price. Central Otago The Central Otago District is located on the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the southern-most grape-growing region in the world, located on the 45th latitude south. It is so far south, that grapes wouldn’t normally ripen in such a cold climate, but the region is essentially a large bowl surrounded by
www.TampaBayMetro.com
mountains that trap heat and make it one of the world’s best places to grow Pinot Noir. Though the first wine-grapes were planted in 1864, it wasn’t until 1972 that the modern day winemaking started in this region. Not unlike Burgundy, Central Otago enjoys a cool climate along with clay and limestone rich soils, but doesn’t experience autumn rains that often mar vintages in France. The results are spectacular with bright, fresh, fruit-forward wines that still possess earthy, terroir notes that combine the best parts of Old World and New World styles in one wine. Perhaps the top wine from the region comes from the Cloudy Bay winery with their ‘Te Wahi’ Pinot Noir ($80), this hand-picked wine is a must try in 2015. Santorini On the Greek Island of Santorini there is a true up-and coming grape varietal that exhibits all the hallmarks of a classic with high acidity, aging capability and a friendly price. The grape is Assyrtiko and is among the noblest white varietals on the planet. The best examples of Assyrtiko possess a full-bodied white wine with delicate aromatics, citrus flavors and a mineral driven finish. Due to the windswept conditions on the island of Santorini, Assyrtiko producers weave the vines into basket-like bundles to protect the vines from suffering wind damage. Though hard to find, Assyrtiko wines are still a great value with many costing under $20 per bottle. One to look for is Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko with its flavors of lemon, white flowers and minerals.
