Pavilion XXXI When: Saturday, November 5, 2016 Where: Tampa Museum of Art
The theme for Pavilion XXXI was Tampa / Havana and coordinated nicely with the Tampa Museum of Art’s current exhibition, Complicated Beauty: Contemporary Cuban Art. Presented by PNC Bank, the black tie fundraiser for the Tampa Museum of Art was cochaired by Stacie & Sam Linsky, Susie & Mitchell Rice and the honorees for the evening were Maureen & Doug Cohn. Two 1950s Chevy automobiles set the stage and welcomed guests into the museum with vibrant colors and a streetscape of Cuba, along with a mojito bar and hand-rolled cigars. Mise en Place prepared a delicious dinner served outside under the canopy with Tampa’s skyline as a backdrop. The 350 guests danced the night away to twotime Grammy Award Winner Marlow Rosado and his Band, while the live auction raised funds to support Tampa Museum of Art and its educational programming and exhibitions. Cuban artists Pedro Pablo Oliva and Esterio Segura each donated artwork for the live auction.

METROHome Tour
From Beach Getaway to a Modern Gateway By Mary Lou Janson
erched on a picturesque, wedge-shaped lot located on a barrier island bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and the intracoastal waterway, the single-story cottage is just steps from the shoreline. Despite a setting that afforded panoramic views of the vast body of water from the backyard deck, vantage points from inside the home were not nearly so dramatic, due to the constraints and rest r a i n t s of walls and windows. A local architect, charged with eliminating visual barriers and expanding the outlook to extend the entire width of the home from the master bedroom, through the main living and dining areas and on to the kitchen, transformed the original staid design into a more contemporary space defined by clean lines, lots of light and naturally, admirable views.
“It was meant to be a remodel but ended up being a total demolition, said Scott Holmes of Holmes Architects.
What began as a house featuring a pitched roof, lattice fencing and a wooden pool deck, morphed from a traditional beach getaway into a modern gateway to the area’s natural beauty, based on a design that blurs the lines between where the interior begins and the exterior ends. Since purchasing the 2,651square-foot residence nearly two decades ago, the owners had finally decided it was time to redesign their Florida vacation home. They wanted to enjoy a more Europeaninspired space and better integrate it with the inland waterway. Their timing fortuitously coincided with the launch of a new, locally based architectural firm, Holmes Architects. Scott Holmes, AIA, co-founding partner of the Indian Shores firm, had recently opened the business with his father, noted architect Dwight E. Holmes, FAIA. While both have designed for years and garnered individual honors throughout their careers (more than 150 to date), the residential project identified as “Intercoastal Retreat, represented their first client as partners and one that would earn their new joint venture its first award, a 2016 Merit Award from AIA Tampa Bay. Immediately after the initial meeting, the couple hired Holmes and the process of updating and enhancing their Indian Rocks Beach home began. The couple also rejected the idea of raising and resting the home on stilts to avoid flooding, so Holmes devised a foundation built on a subtle slope that adds elevation, but keeps the structure safely perched on higher ground. Incorporating atypical elements challenged contractors, faced with installing some for the first time. Shower drains were designed so
“They had a few specific requests including a wall of sliders, low maintenance materials and to eliminate the wasted spaces that were the result of the wedge-shaped lot, said Scott Holmes.
water would flow out of the side wall instead of the center of the shower floor. Doors and walls were separated by slender strips of clear glass that allowed the natural light, found in Florida year round, to filter into rooms more easily, but greatly complicated construction of door frames. With four bedrooms and four bathrooms under the same roof, noise was also a concern; so what were wood floors supported by creaky wood joists, are now secured on solid concrete slabs. To ensure upkeep would be easy, exterior walls that encase the two sections housing the bedrooms were wrapped in split-face concrete masonry, made from travertine blocks. These same materials extend into a section of the main living area, where their light color and rough texture contrast with the room’s otherwise all white walls and smooth surfaces. The third taller, box-like structure boasts a stucco exterior. The split level roof atop the three box-like sections adds dimension and depth to the structure, while incorporating an innovative access point for sunlight. “The intersection of the voids between these masses creates a means to bring in light,” Holmes explained. Rectangular panes of glass fill in those gaps and create a clear band that wraps around the circumference of the raised roof. “They (the homeowners) wanted all glass, few columns and no color,” Holmes said. “When you listen to the vision of your client, the beauty of their home comes out. We knew what they wanted and we stayed true to their needs.” M Holmes Architects 18395 Gulf Blvd., Suite 103, Indian Shores, FL www.holmes-architects.com

2017 PRIVATE SCHOOL EDITION 54 School Choice – It’s Not All Academic Private School Family Profiles
60 2017 Private School List Survey of Area Private Schools
62 Private School Guide Discover Top Private Schools
By Mary Lou Janson
Three Tampa Bay families shared what sort of academic environments, course offerings and extracurricular activities they sensed would best serve their sons and daughters.
The Mccleod Family Academy at the Lakes www.academyatthelakes.org
Choosing the Academy at the Lakes as the ideal educational environment for their daughter, Eryn, would have been an easy decision, if convenience was the main criteria that the McLeod’s considered. The Land O’Lakes private school’s campus is located near the family’s home, but parents David and Jeanine made their decision based on much more than mileage. The couple had crossed paths professionally with the academy’s founder at business networking events and often joked that, if they ever had a child, his would be the school they’d choose. Years later, The McLeod’s faced that exact situation. After researching several schools, they made that very decision and have since been so pleased with their daughter’s progress, that they already plan for their six-month-old son, James, to follow in his sister’s footsteps. Eryn began attending junior kindergarten classes at the independent, nondenominational school when she was four. Now a fourth grader, the nine-year-old was just an infant when her parents started looking into local schools. “I remember taking a tour (of Academy at the Lakes) and being impressed with how polite and well behaved the students were and how well they interacted with grownups,” said David. The couple also knew other families who, like them, studied all available options before selecting the academy. It’s a decision that can carry a longterm commitment for students who start there as pre-kindergarteners and finish when they graduate from high school. “Once you are here, you’re here. It is a commitment until

college,” David added, noting that having that continuity and stability really appealed to them. Along with building long-lasting relationships and friendships between students, faculty and administrative staff, parents enjoy a chance to get to know each other and form close bonds. “There is a lot of parental involvement here. We’ve all celebrated birthdays together. We have each other’s cell phone numbers. We’ve even vacationed together. It is a great support system,” said Jeanine, whose voluntary efforts include serving two years as president of the Parents’ Association and contributing her services as a professional photographer to the school. “They care about your kids as much as you do.” Diversity also played into the family’s choice. Jeanine attended high school in Gainesville and wanted her daughter to enjoy the same opportunity to mix with students representing various ethnicities, religions and backgrounds. “Academy at the Lakes offers those cross-cultural experiences,” Jeanine added. The McLeod’s attribute their daughter’s ability to flourish here, to the intimate class sizes that offer a low ratio of students to teachers, the emphasis on letting each child progress at their own pace and the opportunities for students to engage in creative outlets, ranging from speaking at school assemblies to performing in plays, playing musical instruments and participating in a book club just for the fun of reading. “Kids are allowed to excel without being pushed. There is a desire fostered that makes the students want these things,” David said. “They are growing good people here.”
The Piazza Family Clearwater Central Catholic High School www.ccchs.org
Firsthand experience with the quality of education and familiarity with the five core values that Clearwater Central Catholic High School imparts to, and instills into its students, weighed heavily in the decision-making process, that Steve and Angie Piazza used to determine where their son, Andrew, would attend high school. A few years later he was joined by their daughter, Sienna. Steve and his five sisters were already proud graduates of the college-preparatory, faith-based school, that is one of three in the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Each integrates spiritual guidance with advanced academics to fully prepare students for college, careers and beyond. “The religious aspect is good for students. Everyone is respectful of each other and all are welcome at the school no matter what their faith may be,” said Steve. That philosophy touches on another core value, treating each other with dignity, that, along with valuing service, inspiring excellence and having the opportunity to be “transformed for life,” round out the guidelines shaping the student experience here. Together, these principles contribute far more than just high marks and test scores. They help to build character. Andrew, an 11th grader who is considering majoring in business and marketing in college, is part of a peer ministry that shares their beliefs, and the impact of those beliefs on their lives, with their classmates. The 17-year-old also serves as a student ambassador, helping to introduce and acclimate incoming students to the campus. These extracurricular activities, along with the close-knit nature of the campus, which comfortably accommodates 550 pupils, enables Andrew to be on a first name basis with the entire student
body, whether he is attending class, playing soccer or providing service to his school. “I know the friends I have now will always be a part of my life. My high school experience has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me,” Andrew said. Sienna, 14, appreciates the strong sense of school spirit she has found here that encourages everyone to get involved. Common interests bring students and faculty together in support of everything from an impressive athletic program that has 36 state championships to its credit, to the community outreach projects students initiate, that range from canned food drives, to raising money to help a seriously ill youngster enjoy a special wish. “What’s nice is that the (administration) wants to know our ideas and asks for our input,” Sienna added. Recent improvements have integrated the latest technology into the learning experience here, to keep pace with computers and the ever-changing access to information. Although the high school’s leadership recognizes that they must continue to explore opportunities to improve the school, they also realize that maintaining their long-standing traditions is extremely important. It’s that stability that cultivates a sense of community and encourages parents, as well as pupils, to participate in the educational process. “There are lots of ways for parents to plug in to impact the school in a number of ways,” notes Steve, who serves on the school advisory board. “It is easy to get to know everyone because we are all like family,” said Angie, adding that the sense of camaraderie extends to classmates, families, teachers and administrators. “We all take an interest in each other.”

The Allen Family Berkeley Preparatory School www.BerkeleyPrep.org
After calling Atlanta home for 17 years, a new job required the Allen family to relocate to an unfamiliar city. Where they would live and where their daughter, Avery, and son, Tate, would enroll, were among the daunting decisions the family of four suddenly faced. “It was tricky because at the time (Avery and Tate) were in kindergarten and second grade,” Terry recalled. The siblings finished their respective grades before the family headed to Tampa in July, 2011; but a new school year was rapidly approaching, so the parents turned to online research to learn about local schools while they still lived out-of-state. “We moved here blindly. We knew little about the area but had to make a school decision quickly,” Brad said. Tate, now 14 and in the eighth grade, and Avery, 11 and a sixth grader, previously attended a private school that offered pre-kindergarten through high school classes. Keeping that same continuity in their new hometown was high on their parents’ priority list. “We wanted a place where they would be comfortable and situated in a community for their entire adolescence,” Brad added. A recommendation passed along by a friend with contacts in Tampa, alerted the Allens to a school with a great reputation, a modern campus boasting state-of-the-art facilities and a location convenient to their South Tampa home and the downtown Tampa office where Brad works. It was time to take a closer look at Berkeley Preparatory School. “We flew down to meet with the admissions staff. They were very welcoming,” Terry said. “My top priority was the curriculum. Even in kindergarten and second grade, our kids had great math programs in Atlanta.” Discovering that the same math curriculum was also taught at

Berkeley, was welcome news. Just as impressive was the roster and range of after school activities that help Berkeley Prep students build skills and friendships beyond classroom walls. With options ranging from chess to choir and swimming to soccer, Avery and Tate were eager to get involved. Creating a balanced curriculum designed to cultivate the academics and arts, as well as competitive sports and community service, is a significant strength of the independent, Episcopal-affiliated day school founded in 1960. “Students are constantly challenged academically and enriched socially. The curriculum is very difficult but the faculty does a good job of helping students keep their confidence and wits about them,” said Brad. “They encourage the kids to try everything.” A one-week summer program first introduced the Allen youngsters to their new school shortly after they moved to Tampa. “It immediately connected them with other students, acclimated them to their new surroundings and greatly eased the transition,” Terry said. During those first few years, Terry immediately became involved as well, devoting a lot of time to volunteering at the school. “There is a lot to do at the school, so I took full advantage of it. It was awesome,” she said. Looking ahead to the time when college will eventually weigh heavily on their son’s and daughter’s minds, Brad is grateful for the services, support and resources Berkeley offers at all grade levels and throughout the critical process of selecting, and applying for, colleges. “The faculty takes a keen interest in the students as individuals. We know that Berkeley does an amazing job of assisting and advising families on college opportunities.”

Live from New York The Straz Center New Star Chef, Edward Steinhoff | By Marlowe Fairbanks
M
aestro’s Restaurants at the Straz Center welcomed its newest cast member when “Chef Ed,” Edward Steinhoff stepped into the role of executive chef in September. A native New Yorker, Steinhoff still bears a hint of his Brooklyn accent, although he has been in the Tampa area since 2002. He started his career as a boiler mechanic, eventually opening a bagel bakery and catering business in the borough. “I knew I always wanted to do this [be a chef] from a little kid,” Steinoff says. “I opened the bagel bakery and had a 3,000 square foot store. It was successful until 9/11. Businesses everywhere died, so we sold and I moved here, where I had family.” The Tampa food scene has benefitted ever since. Steinhoff landed in the kitchen at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel in 2002, as sous chef
and protégé of the executive chef there, who saw the talent and work ethic in Steinhoff. After this apprenticeship, Steinhoff held executive chef positions at the elite Hunter’s Green Golf and Country Club and at the golf and country club in Temple Terrace. “I knew immediately when I saw the position open up at The Straz that I wanted to be here,” Steinhoff says. “The explosion taking place on the Riverwalk is obvious. It’s the place to be. I’d read about the Straz Center’s master plan to evolve and grow the cultural magnificence for this community, and I had to be a part of it.” With a cooking style steeped in the elegant simplicity of good, fresh, local food, Chef Ed looks forward to showcasing the seafood diversity of this area, one of the best fishing spots in the world. “I love local fish—hog snapper, especially,” adds Steinhoff. “My favorite food is fish, and we get
ours from the people fishing right here in the Gulf.” Steinhoff instituted a “trace program” at The Straz, where diners can ask him, or their servers, for the background information of the fish on the menu, and they’ll learn how the fish was caught, where, the name of the boat and the captain. “I have cards I can give our guests so they can go online and learn all about the fish on their plates.” The biggest boon to the new chef is his visibility in the dining room. “I’m out there, I’m talking with people,” says Steinoff. “I like people, I want to know how their dinner is going. I’ll speak to anyone, answer any questions. I’m approachable. We want people to come here before their shows instead of anywhere else downtown. We know they have a curtain time, and we get them the best possible, high quality ingredients in time to enjoy their food and be on time for the show.”

n the past year, the foodie scene in downtown Lakeland has grown and now is going to explode with a new Brazilian Gastropub opening in December, by owners Marco and Grace Franca. Both Brazilian-American, the Franca’s are passionate about bringing the taste of their home country to Lakeland. Centered between Tampa and Orlando, the Francas’ hope to bring diners from both cities. The historic building in which POSTO 9 is located, was completely refurbished and brought back to its reincarnation of 3 floors of restaurant, event space and roof top lounge, with much of the components re-purposed and

re-used. “We took out 69 tons of material and have 13 tons coming back into the restaurant,” said Executive Director and Owner, Marco Franca. The team has done extensive market research with more than 1,000 people taste testing possible menu items. “We are going to elevate Brazilian cuisine with a fusion of Southern cuisine,” said Franca. Executive Chef & Restaurant Manager Michel Revy, comes from Brazil and has experience in processes and creating exceptional dishes. Chef Revy says the climates in Florida and Brazil are similar. “We are going to take local ingredients and infuse the Brazilian flavor profile,” said Revy. “For example, with

We are sourcing ingredients from all over the world.” The Franca’s believe people need to eat better and spared no expense in creating their three-in-one businesses — restaurant, event space and roof top bar. There will be a $15 Prix Fix menu for lunch and a no tipping policy. “Our biggest asset is our people and we have spent the last three weeks training to provide exceptional service,” said Grace Franca.
