Publisher’s Notes Life can be hectic and crazy, so it is important to remember to take care of ourselves. A massage, facial or spiritual treatment at a local day or resort spa can help restore balance and harmony to our lives. One local spa owner says that while once considered a luxury, she believes it is crucial to find a reprieve and reduce the stress in our lives. Discover a soulful treatment that will relax the body at five Bay area spas — your body will be grateful. Who doesn’t like dessert? For a little sugar at the end of the meal, METRO discovered a few sweet delights across the Bay, from the Macadamia Decadence at Bern’s Steakhouse to Chocolate Fleur de sel at Martina Grille at the Don CeSar. We recommend you try them all. In METROHome, meet Melissa and Phil Gerardi who renovated a home to meet the needs of their family of six boys. While the couple kept the exterior in tact, they reconfigured the entire interior by eliminating walls and re-adapting the existing space. Gasparilla festivities continue with the Gasparilla Arts Festival on March 2 - 3, Gasparilla Music Festival on March 9 and six days of movie action at the Gasparilla International Film Festival on March 19 - 24. Show your support of the arts and attend any or all of these festivals held in Tampa.

2013 MKZ
Statistically speaking, they’re all the same person. (But we’re not about statistics.) When did luxury lose focus on the individual and start seeing us all as one? When did it swerve from a singular vision and head for the middle road? We’re not sure who led this detour, but a new road starts here with the 2013 MKZ by the Lincoln Motor Company. Now with an innovative push-button shift designed to create an elegantly open and very personal interior cabin space. Get to know the MKZ at Lincoln.com.

Artist Profile: Jack Bond By Megan Voeller
For Tampa artist Jack Bond, being human means to wear a mask — in the metaphorical sense of performing who we are as selves in ways specific to contexts like work, play or love. “You don’t think about it, but you hold parts of yourself back from certain people,” Bond says. “All human beings do this.” The idea motivates Bond’s striking collages, in which he reconfigures mass media material — images cut out from advertisements, art books, etc. — into
10

careful, elegant compositions. The finished pictures hint at narrative, but what their story might be remains mysterious and elusive, like the concealed faces within them. It all started when Bond mounted an African mask on top of a man’s face in a collage as an experiment and thought, “This is interesting.” Since beginning to exhibit his collages in 2010, Bond has been scooping up awards and honorable mentions at art fairs statewide — from Coconut Grove in Miami to the Morean Arts Center’s annual members exhibition in St. Petersburg. In March, he showcases his latest work at the 43rd annual Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts in Curtis Hixon Park on downtown Tampa’s waterfront. The event features more than 200 exhibiting artists, who will compete to win nearly $65,000 in prize money and sell their art to a crowd of 250,000 visitors. For Bond, developing a career as a full-time fine artist in his mid-60s is an unexpected accomplishment. After growing up in St. Petersburg and studying art at New York’s School of Visual Arts and the University of South Florida, he worked for decades as a commercial graphic artist before owning and operating Kent Bond Gallery in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood. The gallery eventually closed and Bond redirected his framing and commercial art skills — like foam board mounting and photo scanning -— into the production of memorable fine art. “It’s been one of the best things that could have happened to me,” Bond says. For more information about Jack Bond, go to jackbondart.com. The Gasparilla Festival of the Arts takes place on Sat., Mar. 2, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sun., Mar. 3, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information, go to www.gasparillaarts.com or call 813-876-1747.

A family’s tragedy sparked the birth of one of the finest collections of modern American and European in the United States — the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. Founded in 1921 by Duncan Phillips, heir to a Pittsburgh steel and banking fortune, to commemorate the deaths of his father and brother, the museum houses nearly 3,000 works of art today. More than 100 Phillips Collection paintings make their way to the Tampa Museum of Art this spring as part of the exhibition, “To See as Artists See: American Art from the Phillips Collection.” Featuring works by Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Rockwell Kent, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Grandma Moses, Jacob

Like all social calendars, Tampa’s dance card is filling up quickly. From fundraisers to galas to everything in between, there seems to be no shortage of getting out there to “B” Scene. From New Year’s on the Roof, to a Gasparilla Party with a purpose, and the Junior League ladies showing their giving colors, we loved being a part of all the fun to kick off 2013. There was even a proposal at the New Year’s Party. You might have noticed last month I had a hiatus. Well, it was because I celebrated the holidays by getting engaged to my longtime partner, Craig Kuhl. It was a whirlwind, so thanks to my pals at METRO for being so supportive. I guess I’ll be pulling double writing duty now, chronicling a wedding planner — planning her own big day. Check out Tampa Bay Weddings Magazine. Watch for some upcoming cool blogs. In its third year, The Rooftop Eve outshined the previous years. Led by an experienced event team of Monica Varner, Stephen Hickey and Jay Mize, and benefiting the 13 Ugly Men and The Ryan Nece Foundation, more than 1,200 people said hello to 2013 in Hyde Park Village. From masked bartenders, to two live bands, DJ Papi, and a well heeled crowd, it was certainly the place to be for New Year’s Eve. Sponsored by Danahy and Murray, celebrating the top of 2013 included Corey McLaughlin, Ferdian Jap, Jay and Bianca Mize, Kyle McguireGilliand, Holly Shump, Terry Blachek, Erika Read, and Mark Kissel. Keeping the giving strong in 2013 is the Ryan Nece Foundation with their 2nd annual Kickoff to Gasparilla party at Gaspar’s Grotto. A great way to launch the scholarship programs, it is the Ryan Nece Foundation’s first event of the year. Partnering with the Krewe of the

Knight’s of St. John, more than 150 people came out to support a great cause, and get their pirate on. Seen partying were Lisa Ferrer, Allison Vetter, Eliza Dagger, Ryan Nece, and Allison Stokes. The Junior League of Tampa encompasses more than 1,800 women and gives hundreds of thousands of dollars back to the community each year. In celebration of their annual campaign, the league hosts several events to encourage giving. Their 100 percent celebration was held at the newly opened Oxford Exchange, and with over 175 attending, it was a record year of fundraising for the League. Celebrating such an important milestone were Stephanie Wiendl, Nicole Hubbard, Lee Lowry, Meghan Duffey, Hannah Gross, Danielle Post, Lynette Russell, Laura Shaw, and Kim Carswell. Cool Party Alert: St. Paddyfest at Irish 31! March 16-17. Check out irish31.com for details. Do you have an event you want us to “B” Scene at? Email at Bscene@tampabaymetro.com. Update. Renovate. Illuminate. Accomodate. By Mary Lou Janson | Photography by Stacy Larsen
Buffered from the street by a big front yard and hidden by heavy foliage, the red brick house facing Frankland Road was almost entirely obscured from view. Only after cars pulled into the circular driveway did the inviting, ranch-style home reveal itself. The privacy from the mature trees and setback suited the former occupant, but made it difficult for would-be buyers to get a glimpse when the house was for sale. Damaged trees are gone, landscaping thinned and the bricks painted white. More impressive are the major reconfigurations made to the interior since the house sold. The footprint remains the same but the entire layout was dramatically altered by eliminating walls, re-adapting existing space, adding a subtle color scheme and allowing more natural light inside.

The original galley kitchen has been expanded and upgraded into a gourmet kitchen, is also a great gathering spot for the Gerardi family which includes six boys.

It was the combined vision of buyers Melissa and Phil Gerardi that updated, renovated and illuminated their new home. “This was one of the last, large parcels of property surrounding the Palma Ceia golf course. There really is not any more land like that,” said Henderson Everett Lee, listing agent for the Toni Everett Co. “It is great that the original bones of the home were saved.” Previously owned by a Frankland family member, the house built in 1958 went on the market for the first time in 2011. The family patriarch, Howard Frankland, was a successful businessman who has both a bridge and street named for him. For generations, Franklands occupied Golf View Estates homes, long considered one of Tampa’s most exclusive and desirable residential areas. The Gerardis visited the property last February and, within only minutes after setting foot on-site, realized their search for a new home was over. “It was the only house we looked at. But we were the right match for this house,” said Melissa Gerardi. “Phil is a general contractor (Tampa-based Gerardi Construction Inc.) so he has the knowledge and means to do what I envisioned and

I had the confidence that he could create what we needed.” The Gerardis needed to accommodate their six sons and Melissa’s mother, Geri, who resides with them. With boys ranging in age from 2 to 15, school districts and commutes also factored into the couple’s thinking. Understandably, moving from a two-story, 6,000-square-foot residence they designed and built into an existing, 4,473-squarefoot home presented challenges. “When you have a good design and the right layout, you really can find that you need less space,” Melissa stated. No longer enclosed, the galley kitchen now overlooks a dining table that seats 10. A designated homework room offers a stunning view of the vast backyard and a grand piano solely occupies a room. Between the garage and kitchen, a large laundry room sports individual lockerlike storage areas and a family room features an expansive, custom-built entertainment center surrounded by shelves filled with family mementos made by Melissa. The couple share the master bedroom that sports two closets — a walk-in version for her — and Geri has a private room across the hall. Connor, 15, has a room to himself, but there is a common door opening into the room where two-year-old J.P. sleeps.

Most of the former attic is now a big bedroom that Jake, 12, 10-year-old twins Preston and Reid, and Grant, 8, share but there’s room to spare for sleepover guests plus shelves filled with games and books and ample personal space for all. Re-designing required the demolition of walls, creating living space where none existed before — the staircase only accessed an attic — and counting on the successful installation of a critical, 700-pound support beam. It was a mammoth undertaking involving new wiring and plumbing, installation of hardwood floors, a replacement roof, dredging tons of muck from the backyard pond and getting move-in ready within three months, to coincide with the start of the new school year. The deadline was missed, but only by two weeks. Some furnishings and decorative items from the Gerardi’s former home and nearby beach house were incorporated into the new interior design, while others were added, many with the help of Blue Moon Trading Co. What was an overgrown backyard and brackish pond became a well-landscaped oasis, featuring fountains installed in the pond plus outdoor space to accommodate active boys, the family’s Cockapoos, Baci and Bella, and a flock of ducks Melissa raised from just a few months old. There’s even room for a future in-ground pool. “Everything about this house has exceeded my expectations. I tried to create a style that is slightly industrial but also has warmth and elegance,” she added. “With a family this size, functionality and organization come first but there is also a sense of serenity that makes me feel calm.” M
The upstairs attic used solely for storage has been redesigned and renovated into a spacious dormlike bedroom that comfortably accommodates four boys with lots of room to spare.

Sandpearl Spa The beautiful resort spa inside the Sandpearl Resort on Clearwater Beach, offers an escape and transport to complete relaxation using only pure and natural products. The aroma of essential oils and the sounds of the water fall greet each guest upon entrance to the spa. The 12,000 square-foot spa offers seven treatment rooms, one couples suite, as well as five poolside cabanas for outdoor treatments. From facials to body massages, the expert therapists will soothe away the stresses of everyday life. Regional Director of Spa Operations, Maureen Vipperman says the Mind, Body and Spirit services are unique to Sandpearl, by combining essential oils and Eastern modality. “We bring a spiritual
element to the service by setting the intention at the beginning of the service.” Vipperman explains that each client selects a stone from a glass tray and neither the client or therapist looks at the simple word - whether it be healing, patience, love, etc. “It is amazing that every time, the stone reveals exactly what the client needed at the end of the treatment,” says Vipperman. “We have amazing energy and it is important for the staff to connect and have positive energy.” The Spa is available to resort guests and club members, but local residents are encouraged to book appointments during the less hectic days of Sunday – Thursday, and make up about 60 percent of the customer base. For locals, an overnight resort stay is recommended so that the entire resort property can be utilized. Otherwise, spa guests may only use the co-ed jacuzzi, steam room and lounge in the spa pool area. “Feel like you are on a tropical island — a million miles away with a Spa-cation or Stay-cation,” Vipperman recommends.“Since we are a destination facility, and with Sandpearl’s commitment to sustainability, we have clients who seek to savor the holistic environment.” A popular treatment for mood swings and thyroid issues is the Enlightenment. “This special treatment
helps to harmonize and re-set the emotional well-being,” Vipperman said. “Every action we do is part of an overall purpose.” Upon check-in each guest is assigned a locker and provided a comfy robe to wear during the scheduled treatment. Whether it is the light, music, temperature or pressure, the spa therapists encourage guests to state their preference. Sandpearl offers four signature treatments including an 80 minute Body Renewal to detoxify and help combat fatigue and stimulate circulation, an Iridescence Facial using the latest anti-aging techniques to nourish and hydrate the skin, a Perfect Massage customized for each guest, and The Pearl that begins with a warm hand or foot bath to nourish the skin and finish the treatment with warm stone massage. Other water therapies, touch therapies, skin care and salon services are available. The Spa also offers Spa ritual packages, bridal packages and a variety of wellness therapies to let the senses rediscover the wonders of vitality and exhilaration. Spa Sundara A Day Spa set on busy road with cars bustling by may not seem inviting at first, but Edyta Chylinski, owner of Spa Sundara, liked the juxtaposition of the crazy traffic outside and the walk-in, tranquil escape that she has created inside. “I’ve worked to create a very Zen atmosphere and wanted the interior to feel like an escape, where the client feels like they have stepped into a sanctuary,” said Chylinski. With daily stress wearing people down and constantly assaulting our bodies, Chylinski says that spa services are not a luxury, but crucial to find a reprieve and balance — even if just for an hour. “The body is grateful and it is all about health and healing,” adds Chylinski. Spa Sundara opened in September 2011 and has been a dream of Chylinski’s for many years. She designed the small, yet highly functional three treatment room spa herself, and worked with a great contractor and decorator to create a space that is
intimate and cozy. Warm beige walls, soft lighting and billowing fabric cover the ceiling creating a space for complete relaxation. A spa speciality is facials, using only natural, holistic products and incorporating massage, aromatherapy and energy work. Other services include massage, body wraps and the Japanese technique of Reiki. Chylinski says that Reiki promotes stress reduction through channeling “life force energy” through positive intension, and then attempts to balance the chakras and increases the body’s ability to heal itself. “Our goal is to heal the level of stress and equip our clients with techniques they can use — from how to breath to re-creating scents at home,” said Chylinski. “The healing doesn’t just stop here. We want our clients to live well.” Spa Sundara 2406 S. MacDill Ave. Tampa, FL 33629 813-837-4300 www.SpaSundara.com

A popular treatment is the Chocolate Martini Pedicure, where the feet soak in a chocolate foot bath, followed by a chocolate scrub then masked and massaged with chocolate oil - it even comes served with a Chocolate Martini. Delicious, relaxing and energizing. Robyn also says the Caviar Pedicure is “so worth it.” Great community partners, Spa Moritz supports many local charities including Moffitt Cancer Foundation and victims of hurricane Sandy. Resolve your balance problem with accurate diagnosis & world class care… Balance Problems can change your lifestyle, preventing you from certain types of work and simple, yet essential daily tasks, like driving. It also greatly increases the risk of falling and bodily injury. Worse, vertigo, dizziness and balance problems have many potential causes which can make it very challenging for physicians to reach an accurate and complete diagnosis. This in turn can delay or even prevent the appropriate treatment and relief. The first step in resolving the disorder is to determine its true cause. Many balance and dizziness problems are related to the balance organ in the inner ear… or to loss of or change in hearing. There are others possible causes as well but since the balance system is a part of the ear anatomy, which is highly complex. Diagnosis should start by discerning whether its inner ear related or not. At Farrior Ear Clinic, Dr. Jay B. Farrior starts the differential diagnosis with a complete hearing test, one-on-one evaluation of your health history and balance problems. Dr. Farrior is an internationally recognized ear specialist (otology), a veteran instructor of otology. He is also a leading authority on ear anatomy, which includes the balance system. olce is the only winery in North America that is solely devoted to the production of a single, late harvest wine. That makes Napa Valley’s Dolce winery unique since there are over 8,000 bonded wineries in North America. The reason the Dolce winery is dedicated to producing just one late harvest wine, is due to the unique and fascinating process used. Due to its specialized climate in southern Napa Valley, tucked away in a foggy, humid, westerly facing vineyard, the conditions are perfect for the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. That’s right, the vineyard workers and winemaking team at Dolce actually farm for rotting fruit! But not for black rot, instead they carefully coax the vineyard into producing botrytis cinerea. Botrytis cinerea is a benevolent form of rot that pierces the skin, and naturally dehydrates the contents of each individual grape, thus concentrating the sugars and acids in the grapes and leaving behind an intense, aromatic and viscous nectar that tastes like liquid gold. Botyris cinerea was first discovered in Hungary in 1630, and has been used since to produce the famous late harvest

Tokaj wines. The French have also helped make this style of wine worldrenowned with the production of Sauternes, a late harvest wine from the Bordeaux region that combines the Sémillion, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes. Perhaps the world’s most famous, and expensive, example of a botrytized wine, is Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes. In fact, Chateau d’Yquem is the wine Dolce is modeled after. Botyris cinerea occurs naturally in only a few places in the world. The vineyard conditions must be moist, but not too moist. It is a delicate balance, and a deft winemaking team has to carefully monitor the vineyard and weather patterns on, literally, an hourly basis. But when harvested at just the right moment, usually six to eight weeks after other vineyards are picked, the results are amazing. Dolce yields a complex and thrilling wine with a wide spectrum of fruit flavors including exotic tropical fruit, stone fruit and citrus flavors. There is an inherent spicy honey characteristic, backed by orange blossom,
www.TampaBayMetro.com
apricot, passionfruit, mango, vanilla bean crème brûlée and subtle minerality. The thing that makes Dolce so great is the natural high acidity, making the wine balanced and refreshing, without being cloying or overly heavy. This high acidity is also what makes Dolce so age-worthy. Like great Sauternes, Dolce possesses the ability to age for decades and improve, long after the color has turned to a brownish-gold color. Classically, botrytized wines are paired with fruit based desserts, bleu cheese, foie gras, liver-based pates, or with spicy Thai dishes. A bottle of Dolce retails for about $60 dollars per half bottle, but the production of Dolce is a labor-intensive process that requires many passes through the vineyard throughout the growing season, and gentle hand harvesting, often by a berry-by-berry selection. So indulge yourself this new year and try a bottle of Dolce, and by doing so, you will be tasting liquid gold from Napa Valley. Chef Greg Baker
Owners, Chef Greg and Michelle Baker, founded The Refinery in 2010 upon a mission that says “good food is a necessity, not a right.” The dinner menu featured five entrees of fish, pork, quiche, cannelloni and chicken, plus a steak and burger. The pork chop was served sliced on top of cannellini beans, mustard greens, sweet peppers and yellow tomato BBQ. The chicken was pan roasted and served with a tangerine-butter cabbage, cane syrup-cayenne glaze, mustard green pesto, roasted potato and beet nage. No fancy white linen table cloths atop the tables here, instead, mason jars, chipped plates and mis-matched silver are used to enhance the relaxed and comfortable vibe. Even a trip to the restroom is fun, as a box of chalk sits above the paper towels and invites guests to leave their mark with a message on the chalk-board painted walls. M The Refinery 5137 N.
