Celebrating Powerful People in Tampa Bay

Publisher’s Notes Time for a CELEBRATION.

We certainly have a lot to celebrate in the Bay Area. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the big Super Bowl LV win. The Bucs made history for being the first NFL team to ever play at their home field and win. While it was not the usual festivities and parties surrounding the game, there was plenty of fan activities at the NFL Experience, and along Tampa’s downtown Riverwalk. The Tampa Bay area is becoming quite the sports winners with the Lightning, Rays and now the Buccaneers. Museums are usually not too busy and a great place for social distancing. Be sure to visit the Tampa Museum of Art and the current exhibition featuring 60 works of the Highwaymen. The museum is offering virtual tours for groups of four or more and in-person tours for groups of 10. The exhibit runs through March 28. In METROBiz, we chatted with Wendy Garraty, Founder of Clayton Gray Home. While her online businesses has been operating for over 10 years, she recently opened a Brick-andMortar in south Tampa. The shop and online have the signature curated CGH look for home décor. In METROHome Tour, designers from McKinley Rose Interiors have created a chic coastal design with added glam for one of their satisfied clients. Be sure to checkout the new rooftop bar and restaurant, Sal Y Mar, on the 7th floor of the new co-branded Aloft and Element Hotels in Midtown Tampa. They opened to the public on Super Bowl weekend. Great place to grab a cocktail and enjoy the panoramic view. Florida is certainly open and if you need a vacation, consider a trip to the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. The property is in the heart of South Beach and offers relaxation beach or poolside. This issue also features Health + Wellness. We are so proud to feature a special section with the American Heart Association with special leaders who inspire others to live a heart-healthy life. Remember to like and follow us on Instagram and Facebook @tampabaymetro.

It’s Electric!

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S Imagine my delight when we were offered the chance to take the Taycan Turbo S for a weekend test drive. For me, Porsche delivers everything I want in a car — high performance, sleek design and immeasurable satisfaction. I’ve driven electric cars in the past, but everything about the Taycan Turbo S was a thrill. Stepping on the gas, brought the car from 0-60 in about 2.8 seconds. As I accelerated, I had to warn my passenger to prepare for take off. The quickness of the car is exhilarating. Based on EPA range, the performance battery allows nearly 192 miles before the need to stop and charge the battery, and even so it can quickly charge with a range of 62 miles in about five minutes. The AMCI test results indicate nearly 278 miles with the performance battery. The interior of the Tycan is impressive with a multifunction Sport Chrono Package and an innovative curved instrument display panel. The seats fit the body like a glove and allow for comfort while in the drivers or passenger seat. The separate seat controls allows for individual comfort when you want a blast of cool air or to warm up the seat on a chilly evening. The sleek silhouette is seamless and exterior boasts a seamless light strip and iconic “Porsche” logo made of three-dimensional letters in a glass look. The Taycan can be completely custom and only limited by your imagination. —Stephen P. Parag, II

A Foundation For Growth

Wendy Garraty Owner & Founder Clayton Gray Home By Ronda M. Parag It was a move from Atlanta to Tampa in 1998 that initially sparked the idea for her business, Clayton Gray Home. After Wendy, and her husband Steve, relocated to Tampa, she was immediately challenged with finding resources to renovate and decorate their south Tampa home. Garraty developed the skills to find more unique pieces and began helping friends with residential and small commercial projects, sourcing everything from fabric to furniture to lighting. “This passion, for sourcing and finding the most unique items out there, turned into a business,” said Wendy Garraty. “I enjoy helping people transform their spaces. Clayton Gray Home helps people improve their space, which improves their mood.” Clayton Gray Home was founded in 2010 when her sourcing obsession for beautiful interiors was expanding outside of the Tampa area. Setting up an e-commerce platform enabled her to reach those people

12

www.TampaBayMetro.com

and show quickly the items she was finding and choosing. Eventually, this would become the curated look of CGH. “Our new location on Howard Avenue, near Bayshore, brings a glimpse of the style seen online to a beautiful Brick-and-Mortar setting for our local customers,” said Garraty. Prior to COVID, Garraty says that travel was a great source of inspiration. While unable to travel like the past, she and a colleague did recently go to Market in Atlanta. “Inspiration is everywhere,” said Garraty. “I always love checking out new restaurants, hotels and buildings to get inspired by the materials being used. Sometimes a small detail will spark an idea for an entire curation of products.” While Garraty’s business was already online, the pandemic really helped to spur growth for her company. But, it was not without its challenges. “Shipping delays have been tremendous,” said Garraty. “Many of the products we sell have simply been sitting in containers

waiting for the manpower to move them. We do our best to manage expectations with our customers, but it has created challenges, for sure. However, out of those challenges come positive changes, so it hasn’t been a bad thing.” Some of her favorite places in Tampa are within a five mile radius, she says with a laugh. “I definitely am a huge fan of Buddy Brew Coffee and a daily walk along Bayshore Boulevard,” said Garraty. “For self care: Cielo Spa, Faces of South Tampa, and for clothing, Haden Reid. I also recently discovered Flora Fina in Ybor City and loved it. Le Meridian is long time favorite and Haven and Elevage are easy go-to’s.” A self-described social person, Garraty always likes going to events and meeting new people. As a Gemini she is always juggling many projects, family and friends, and likes to stay busy. She is always looking for laughs and fun. “I try hard to live in the moment, but I am a planner at heart, so I love the next adventure.”

Rich Colors of Florida’s Natural Scenes at Tampa Museum of Art Museums offer visitors the opportunity to reflect and learn through the exhibitions and community programing. Currently, Tampa Museum of Art celebrates and honors the richness and complexity of Florida’s cultural tapestry with the exhibition, Living Color: The Art of the Highwaymen. The exhibition brings together 60 paintings from five outstanding private collections, featuring the works of the core group of Florida Highwaymen, who are self-trained and used accessible materials. These celebrated African American artists depicted the state’s natural environment and rich tones through their unique self-taught painting styles. The Highwaymen produced artwork

from the 1950s to the 1980s. Artists including Al Black, Mary Ann Carroll, Willie Daniels, Johnny Daniels, James Gibson, Alfred Hair, Roy McLendon, Harold Newton, Sam Newton, Willie Reagan, and Livingston Roberts, painted as a means to making a living, and many were quite successful, especially Alfred Hair and Harold Newton. Facing limitations imposed by the racial prejudice of their time, Highwaymen artists had little or no formal training or access to conventional art markets. To overcome these obstacles, they produced large numbers of works that could be sold at affordable prices, often door-to-door and sometimes from their cars’ trunks along such thoroughfares as Route 1.

“We’re pleased to be able to bring Living Color to Tampa because this exhibition speaks to the resourcefulness and resilience of this group of artists,” said Joanna Robotham, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Tampa Museum of Art. “The Highwaymen, based in and around Ft. Pierce, developed their own creative community during a time in Florida’s history that coincided with an economic boom in the state and African Americans fighting for equal rights.” Groups of four or more can schedule a private virtual tour, and groups of 10 or more can schedule an in-person tour of Living Color and any exhibition at TMA by visiting www.TampaMuseum.org/Adult-Tours/.

Living Color: The Art of the Highwaymen On View Through March 28, 2021 at the Tampa Museum of Art. The museum is located in downtown Tampa at 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa, 33602. For more information, visit www.TampaMuseum.org or call 813.274.8130.

IN 2007... Arts are such an important part of the community and are great draws for why the Tampa Bay area remains a top destination for travel and relocations. From the cover photo of work by Dale Chihuly to the

exciting plans to build the new Tampa Museum of Art featured in the November 2007 issue, Tampa Bay METRO continues to feature and support the performing and visual arts throughout the Tampa Bay region.

On The Town It’s fun to look back at the charitable events from the past and see how many are still a success. While we can’t wait for events to start back again, take a look at the pages out of the social scene in 2007. See anyone you know? Try to find Ken Walters, Andy Graham, Steve and Julie Weintraub, Judi Lisi, Brooke Palmer, Troy Atlas and Mary D. Scourtes.

METRO Fashions 2007 Through the years, we have done many fashion shoots and shown the popular fashion trends of the season. Back in 2007, the must-haves included: sequins, purple, exotic prints, wide leg pants, cropped jackets, cuff bracelets and more. It is always fun to see how fashion continues to evolve, and they say that if you keep something long enough, it will come back in style.

lassic coastal elegance epitomizes the look, and lifestyle, afforded by this newly remodeled Sunset Park waterfront estate. Kristen McKinlay and Melanie Rose, owners/designers with McKinlay Rose Interiors of Tampa, introduced water-inspired colors, organic elements, natural wood tones and gilded accessories to create a sleek, chic interior, ideal family home, and a setting that is inviting to everyone. “The wife is a Florida native who grew up on the water, so she wanted a homegrown feel that would be both fancy and rustic,” said Rose. “She loves

elegant things, but she’s also natural.” Homeowners Mark and Tammy Engel moved to south Tampa from Wray, CO. Mark is the founder/CEO of National Orders Inc, a telecommunications firm headquartered here. The avid fisherman described the décor of the residence as “a dream home to melt your cares away.” Turkish marble floors grace the entryway that is accessed through a wood grain, dual entrance door. The open floor plan showcases a spacious kitchen featuring Elite Stainless Steel appliances, white crystalized marble countertops and white custom cabinets. The bright, light space is well suited for

a professional chef. A gray finish table and Palma woven chairs create a dining room that mixes tropical relaxation with rustic charm. The setting is ideal for enjoying stunning views of the sunsets over Old Tampa Bay. Two very different seating arrangements define the great room. Shades of navy and cobalt blue mix with a touch of fuchsia provided by fresh orchids keep the overall look clean and uncluttered. One area is anchored by a sectional sofa draped in soft, luxurious leather, while the other is composed of covered-in-color velvet upholstered arm chairs suitable for swiveling to follow

along as conversations flow. A seagrass natural fiber rug representing an organic coastal element covers both the dining and great room floors. Earth tones, textured wallpaper, sea shell wall sconces and a freestanding, driftwood vanity work in harmony with the stretched, hand painted canvas artwork of a native Florida bird displayed within the guest powder room. A Montecito billiard table boasting a bold blue surface features a driftwood finish and sturdy, dual base, representing the essence of coastal charm. Chandelier pendants dangling overhead are fashioned from a natural Selenite Crystalline material and the rich, navy woven area rug makes a bold statement beneath the natural wood furnishings. “Tampa is known for its old Florida rustic charm, but we still live in the city, so we wanted to keep it glamorous,” said McKinlay. MINDFULLNESS Starting Your Day In A Positive Way.

W

aking up feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to tackle the day? Or struggling to open your eyes, already stressed about work, family matters, health issues or any other concerns that make hearts race, bodies tense and breathing become short and shallow? Whether these are recent afflictions caused these uncertain times or on-going issues that show no signs of abating, there is cause for concern. Hoping to help others take control of their lives by taking a breath, Tampa resident Jessie Stehlik launched a Facebook group last summer featuring healers from around the world. She created an online community that brings people together to practice breathing techniques, participate in guided visualizations and identify intentions designed to enhance their mindfulness. The group, “5 Minutes To Sunrise,” engages followers for about 15 minutes weekday mornings with live presentations that provide participants opportunities to learn from, and benefit from, each other. All sessions are available via video so if the mere thought of getting up at daybreak is enough to induce stress, simply skip the live lessons to view them any time. “I host professionals who have an understanding of how to use our breath to calm ourselves. I have all different takes on those techniques, from scientific to those who connect to chakras (connected energy points in the body),” said Stehlik. “They lead us through a short meditation to start the day off right.” “This is purely authentic and simple. There is no bigger plan,” Stehlik said of the free service. “I just wanted to raise a collective awareness to start the day by being mindful. If this affects just one person’s morning, I feel like we’ve done our job.”

Jessie Stehlik

46

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Michele Smith

Less than a year after launching, Stehlik is already expanding the private group into a public forum to accommodate more followers and allow presentations to be shared. The Mayo Clinic defines mindfulness as a “type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.” Stehlik, a professional photographer, has no formal training in yoga or breath work. But she is a big believer in how those practices can help overcome feelings of anxiety and loneliness, which is why she features trained instructors. Michele Smith, founder of The Resiliency School in Tampa, has donated her time and talents to the group since last June. She recognized the value of providing life-affirming connections to a community and acknowledges it has provided her with a positive, creative outlet. “I like to be silent in the mornings so it was a challenging six months for me,” Smith recalled. Work conflicts eventually interrupted her regular Monday morning sessions, but she continues to contribute to the group. “Just a few minutes of meditation every day can help improve sleep quality, digestion, focus and creativity. This is a very simple, free, self-care ritual that also provides a sense of community. It’s wonderful,” she added. Becca Childress, a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and owner of Becca Childress Yoga and Wellness in Fredericksburg, VA. first learned about the site through a mutual friend of Jessie’s. “People are drawn together energetically during this unusual time. Even though 2020 was one of the most challenging years in our lifetime, amazing things came out of it, like groups like this,” Childress said. “I look forward to the time I get to spend with this group. In a world that is feeling so disconnected, this is a way to feel connected. People need people and this allows me to offer techniques I know are effective at calming the heart and calming our thoughts.”

Breaking Down Barriers How the American Heart Association is championing health equity and fighting for a world of longer, healthier lives for all. Q+A with American Heart Association Tampa Bay’s Executive Director, Amanda Palumbo Q: In your over eight years at the American Heart Association, what have you seen as the most important components of your mission and how has the organization evolved in recent years? A: The AHA continues to be one of the most recognized non-profits in the nation and has invested over $4 billion in heart and stroke research, second only to the federal government. The support of innovative science and ensuring quality care has not changed, but what I have seen evolve is the focus on the crucial role that community environments play on health. There are so many complex social factors that impact an individual’s ability to live healthfully. By focusing on those local social determinants of health, health equity and structural racism, we believe we can truly lift Tampa Bay as a healthier community for all. Q: What are social determinants of health and why do they play such a big role in the AHA’s work now? A: We have found that a person’s zip code can dictate more about their health outcomes than their genetic code. Right here in Tampa Bay, we see that life expectancy can vary by up to 15 years between zip codes that are literally just two miles apart. That’s because of the social determinants of health or the factors that influence where and how people live, learn, work and play. They provide context to a person’s life and can play just as big of a role in affecting health as medications and physical lifestyle changes. For example, a neighborhood that lacks sidewalks or appropriate lighting can keep people from walking, jogging, or playing outside because it may not be safe to do so. It may be harder for people to eat healthy produce if they do not have a grocery store within an easily accessible distance, and therefore they may turn to high-sodium, high-calorie processed food items they can easily get at a corner convenience store. The AHA believes that the opportunity for a long, healthy life is a fundamental human right, however not everyone can access the things they need to have a full, healthy life, including quality health care. And when you cannot access these things, you often have a worse outcome. Tragically, the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated this issue for many. That is why the work we do in our communities is focused on removing these barriers to health. Q: What are some of the things the American Heart

54

www.TampaBayMetro.com

Association is doing here in Tampa Bay to work towards optimum heart and brain health for all? A: We are so proud of the work we are doing here locally to have a tangible impact on the health of our community. One of our main focuses is nutrition security, as we know nearly 1 in 3 families in Tampa Bay struggle with not knowing where their next healthy meal will come from. We are extremely proud of our Food Rx – Food as Medicine initiative, in partnership with the Judeo Christian Clinic and the YMCA Veggie Van, that allows health care providers to screen patients for food insecurity and “prescribe” healthy diets that address obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. Patients can then fill their healthy food prescriptions once a week at an on-site mobile market or at one of several locations throughout Hillsborough County. The AHA’s food insecurity screening tool is utilized in many free clinics and federally-qualified health centers throughout the Tampa Bay area. We also have a great partnership with the St. Pete Free Clinic where we provide nutrition guidelines and health information, a Lifestyle Rx program that aides in healthy lifestyle changes, and culturally-diverse and relevant nutritional recipes. Q: How can others help with the important work being done in the community by the AHA and its local partners. A: Our mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives, but we can’t do that alone. We are inviting local individuals, families, companies and organizations to come alongside us as we provide prevention education, blood pressure management, hands-only CPR trainings, youth health initiatives, healthy food access, workplace wellness, tobacco cessation, mental health awareness and so much more –all through a health equity lens. With your help, we can identify the needs of this community and the challenges we face and work together to find solutions. If you are interested in joining us as a sponsor, donor or volunteer, please reach out to me at tampabay@heart.org or call 727.563.8062. Follow along with us at Heart.org/TampaBay!

A Native of New York, Amanda Palumbo has called Tampa Bay home for the past 11 years and has been a passionate AHA staff member for over 8 years. She resides in St. Pete with her husband Andrew and 6-month old daughter.

Coronavirus And Heart & Stroke Health Information provided by The American Heart Association In the many months since COVID-19 emerged, medical experts have learned a lot on how it poses a significant threat to the heart. About 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 has cardiovascular disease, making it the most common underlying health condition. It does not appear that cardiovascular disease makes people more likely to get the virus, but it may make the course of it potentially worse. Additionally, a growing number of studies suggest many COVID-19 survivors experience some type of heart damage, even if they didn’t have underlying heart disease and weren’t sick enough to be hospitalized. This latest twist has health care experts worried about a potential increase in heart failure. As more time has passed and people have found themselves becoming more sedentary than usual as normal routines have been upended, much of the essential advice remains paramount: Take the coronavirus seriously. Do all you can to avoid catching it. And never ignore symptoms of a heart attack, stroke or other condition that should be treated in an emergency room. “This virus can affect many different types of cells throughout the body,” explains Dr. Javier Cuevas, Assistant Dean, Morsani College of Medicine and American Heart Association Tampa Bay’s Board President. It latches onto cells through an enzyme called ACE2, short for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. ACE2 is found on all sorts of cell surfaces in the body — including lungs, heart, brain, gastrointestinal tract and the lining of blood vessels — that allows the virus to spread throughout the body. “And that’s why we see so many cardiovascular and other manifestations of the disease.”

56

www.TampaBayMetro.com

When someone does catch the virus, the list of potential heart and stroke-related problems is lengthy. “COVID-19 is thought to contribute to irregular heartbeats, inflammation of the heart muscle, reduced blood flow to the heart and sudden cardiac death,” says Cuevas. The virus does damage through two main pathways — by triggering an immune response that sets up “hyperinflammation,” and by triggering blood clots which can cause strokes in otherwise young, healthy people and also lead to heart attacks. So, the best intervention is prevention – trying not to get the infection in the first place and practicing healthy habits daily. Eating a well-balanced diet, getting plenty of exercise and sleep, avoiding smoking and overindulgence in alcohol, and managing one’s weight are key factors in maintaining overall heart health. This is especially critical for those already living with cardiovascular disease. People with cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, should be particularly careful about ways to avoid catching the virus, which include social distancing, mask wearing, and hand washing, as well as continue to get their annual flu shot and keep up with their usual treatment and doctor visits. No matter how busy our healthcare systems have gotten during the pandemic, one thing has not changed — If you’re having symptoms of a heart attack or stroke – call 911. Dr. Cuevas urges people, “Don’t sit it out and wait for things to get better at home — seek help immediately. The safest place to be if you’re having a heart attack or a stroke is in the hospital.”
