The New Electric SUV From Audi

A first for me, my first all electric test drive. From the outside you would never think the e-tron was electric, well outside of the oversize graphics on our test car. (Don’t worry, this is just on the promotional rides.) When you first sit behind the Virtual Cockpit, it’s a lot to take in. Not because it’s an electric car, but because Audi just has an amazing digital instrument cluster. Within a few minutes, you realize how the design is so intuitive. Like many people, I was unsure of how far I could drive an electric car, before worrying about the need to plug it in. For three days I drove without needing one charge. Back and forth across the Bay and to our many weekend events, you start to forget that the e-tron is electric, and begin to enjoy it for the beautiful drive it is. While the exterior is stylish and resembles similar Audi SUV Q-models,

the e-tron delivers in the electric vehicle arena. The interior of the e-tron is spacious and offers comfortable seating for five. The hatchback offers 29 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats for hauling groceries or other necessities. It’s great to carry the kids’ sports equipment and the seats fold down for those trips to Home Depot. The e-tron will tow up to 4,000 pounds and has a spare tire. I was particularly impressed with the acceleration of the vehicle. The vehicle

goes zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and zero to 100 in 18 seconds. Top speed is 124 mph. The smooth and quiet ride of the e-tron makes it a true pleasure to drive. The numerous cameras and sensors allow for easy maneuvering into parking spots and assist in backing up. The auto assist on the highway can almost virtually drive the car for you. If the vehicle senses a slow down in traffic, the e-tron automatically will apply brakes in the auto mode. The EPA Range on the Audi e-tron is 200 plus miles — it is great for driving around town, and for those who charge their battery at home, the car is fully charged in about nine hours. If you are looking for a new alternative to traditional gasoline cars and want the luxury and state-of-the-art technology behind Audi, certainly schedule a test drive of the new 2019 e-tron. —Steve Parag

In the pursuit of treatments and a cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), Tampa’s philanthropic community will assemble for an educational symposium and FARA Energy Ball gala, respectively on September 26 and 28. The events will kick off with the USF Health FA Symposium on September 26 at the USF School of Music Concert Hall, featuring speakers from the USF Ataxia Research Center and dynamic panelists from the FA patient and research communities. Friedreich’s Ataxia is a debilitating multi-system disease and the most common cause of inherited ataxia; 1 in 100 people are carriers of the FA gene. What begins

as difficulty with balance and coordination, progresses to a life-altering loss of mobility, energy, and cardiac complications. Relocating within the Los Angeles area was definitely a great move but, in one aspect, it wasn’t very bright. Subdued shades of black, white and gray dominated the interior. That low key color scheme in no way reflected the more vibrant preferences of the new occupants, particularly DeBartolo. “It was very L.A.,” recalled Enrique Crespo, principal interior designer with the Tampa-based Crespo Design Group. Crespo knows DeBartolo quite well after previously working on two homes for her. He was confident that color, and lots of it, was key to making this home her own. “I wanted the design to capture her personality which, I think, really comes through in all of the fabrics, wall coverings, artwork and furnishings,” said Crespo. So much more than mere pops of color created a bolder and, yes, brighter

décor throughout the spacious residence. Ribbons of color rippling across rugs, waves of color washing over walls and bolts of colorful cloth covering furniture, banished the bland, while introducing a grand color scheme into the household. “We began by Nikki telling me what colors she wants. She really wanted orange, so I started working with that and tried to incorporate orange everywhere,” Crespo said. To keep it all cohesive, Crespo cleverly combined common colors to connect different elements. “I would use the same colors and put some of them into each of the rugs so that, even though they are all very different and have different colors, they share some of the same colors and work well together,” said Crespo. The residence is certainly furnished for living and entertaining, but also for

fun. A large sectional in the family room practically cries out to be changed and rearranged. The Roche Bobois Missoni Mah Jong sectional is designed to “freely adapt in function and form,” according to the European manufacturer. “This sofa is very famous in the design world,” Crespo said. “The sections are not attached. You can move pieces and switch cushions or put cushions on the floor to make another seat. It comes apart so that you can play with it. It is really fun. And it’s all in Missoni fabrics.” To keep the overall look contemporary, Crespo allowed plenty of open, uncluttered space to properly stage some of the more impactful pieces, like the sapphire blue Roche Bobois Zephyrus sideboard, featuring drawers designed to open like the wings of a butterfly, one of only 55 made.

Pale wood floors and white walls created the perfect canvas to contrast and complement the custom-designed wallpapers installed in various bathrooms, bedrooms, formal living room and recessed ceiling in the dining room. Walls left paperless are brightened by works of art collected by the couple.
