The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg debuts its new cookbook, Food + Art as a celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary. Inspired and created by The Stuart Society with Toni Lydecker as the editor, the cookbook celebrates the melding of food and art. “Working on Food + Art was a collaborative experience, different in many ways from doing a cookbook on my own,” says Lydecker. “The Stuart Society members and other volunteers who worked with us love the Museum of Fine Arts — and they brought the same passion to this cookbook.” Along with 116 recipes from some of Tampa Bay area’s most accomplished chefs, Food + Art offers an introduction to the Museum, its history and comprehensive collection of world art. The recipes are amazingly diverse and feature dishes from Florida and around the globe. The drinks range from vanilla orchid iced tea to a nuevos amigos tequila cocktail, a tiki typhoon, and even bacon fat-washed gin.

Copies of the cookbook are $35 each and can be ordered at www.fine-arts.org/about/store/ or at the Tampa Museum of Art, the Oxford Exchange, and the South Tampa Trading Company.

A Portrait Of Beauty And Confidence As modern women, we are constantly “on-the-go,” tending to the needs of our families, our spouses, and our careers, yet rarely ever to ourselves. While cameras and picture taking opportunities are readily available, Andi Diamond has found that women’s dreams of the perfect portrait still prove elusive. By combining aspects of fashion, glamour, and boudoir she is able to create portraits that help women to feel beautiful, confident, and celebrated. Through her contemporary style as an artist Andi has discovered that through great lighting, attention to posing, and exceptional client relations, she can create stunning imagery to empower all women in showcasing their beauty. “And yes, I firmly believe that ALL women are beautiful and photogenic, and deserve to be pampered.”

Berkeley Preparatory School Celebrates Opening of the Gries Center for the Arts and Sciences

“It’s a game changer for Tampa,” said Joseph Seivold, Headmaster of Berkeley Preparatory School. Opening just in time for the new school year, the Gries Center for the Arts and Sciences houses state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, performance spaces and workshops specifically designed to host math, science, biology, physics, chemistry, painting, ceramics, sculpture, drama, drawing, choral, music, and computer animation. Not only impressive to parents and students, Headmaster Seivold emphasizes the center is an investment in the community. “Companies looking to relocate to the Tampa Bay area, can see that we have this excellent facility with leading edge curriculum created for the future. We have the tools for hands-on learning.” Dr. Nicole Ackerson who heads the Science Department agrees. In the initial design concept, faculty was asked for input in design. “We had an organic collaboration among departments,” said Ackerson. “With the new state-of-the-art facilities, we are no longer teachers that teach science, we are scientists who teach.” The Gries Center for the Arts and Sciences will enhance an already world-class curriculum in a setting where students develop critical thinking skills through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning opportunities that prepare them to take on real-world challenges. Driving along Cypress Street in West Tampa, there has been ongoing construction behind the metal fence that was once Hector-Elisa’s Health Club. For the past eight months, Michael Hettrich of Octillion design + build, inc., has been transforming the space into a state-of-theart office for Michael Martin’s branding, sales and marketing company. Michael Hettrich, and his team at Octillion design + build, is comprised of skilled carpenters, welders, furniture makers, and two full time buyers, that search the world over for treasures to be used in their one of

Hettrich designed the entire space around four red steel beams in the interior, to create the circular conference room, while the spokes of the wheel offer other offices and meeting spaces. The entrance is wrapped in dark walnut, with inset photos from the Indy 500. The photos from the 50s and 60s are sliced to show only parts of the race cars. There are no light switches on the walls, each room has occupancy sensors that will adjust the light when someone enters. Along the interior wall are pathway lights that can cycle through a myriad of

To honor Martin’s Jamaican and British heritage, there are numerous accessories, including a painted Thomasville chest with the Union Jack and the Jamaican drum that rests in the corner. Above a set of file cabinets that have been painted with “Game On” there is an Elk, whose antlers have been painted a metallic red. Desk lights have been created with painted AK47’s and softened with leopard lamp shades. Continuing around the round hall is a glass window that was installed for a

a kind space transformations. Martin emphasized that he is interested in “function over design” and working with Hettrich has been “awesome.” As a WWII buff, Martin was interested in incorporating military objects and design into the space. His goal was to use colors, contents and fonts to create a comfortable, engaging space, nothing stuffy or uptight. “We gutted everything except the exterior wall,” Martin says. “The building was like a time capsule from the 70s.”

Located just outside Martin’s office is a built-in bed decorated with Balinese art, handwoven fabrics with a Moroccan feel and pillows with fabrics from Uzbekistan. A wood barn-like door can be closed to offer privacy. Martin’s office was created with a guns & money theme. He is also a huge fan of Iron Man and an authentic helmet is on display. Hettrich had a movie prop company create the money and gold bars

In addition, there is a full fitness studio with a trainer. All employees are encouraged to workout and be healthy. The full kitchen space allows for easy meal preparation. Jokingly, Martin did say that he asks potential employees how many push-ups they can do. Many of the accessories found around the office have been gathered at

government and police auctions. Hettrich admitted to being a compulsive shopper and recovering shopaholic. Recent finds include a Piggly Wiggly sign, a Mobil Gas sign and vintage industrial factory carts that have been re-purposed into tables. The heart of the operation is what is referred to as the War Room. The room has a 14 x 16, custom-designed table with a map of the world underneath. Sitting on top of the table are authentic metal tanks and army men. In this room, they are ready for battle. Other details include an entire White Board wall used to facilitate ideas. Work stations around the room have been fashioned out of bowling alley floors. Martin is a big fan of Winston Churchill and his quotes can be found throughout the office. The War Room wall quote by Churchill says “If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going.” M

3 Steps To A Healthier You Medical | Fitness | Nutrition By Mary Lou Janson

There’s no magic formula, secret potion or fast fix that turns back the hands of time; but there are simple steps and easy guidelines women can follow to enhance their health, benefit their bodies and improve their quality of life. The time to start making those changes is sooner, rather than later, experts agree. That may mean expanding your list of yearly medical appointments, engaging in resultsoriented fitness routines that keep you moving and motivated, and boosting your nutritional intake to create a more balanced daily diet. www.TampaBayMetro.com

1 It’s All About The Base (line)

Check out what is happening with your health right now by getting a check-up. Establishing a baseline of your current physical condition, with a doctor’s help, provides great insight into areas needing improvement. How well your body is functioning now, impacts how well it performs later. “Every person should have a primary care doctor as an advocate for their health, not just seek help when trouble has already occurred. Health issues creep up silently quite early in life more than people realize. Awareness in your 30s may help avoid paying a heavier price in your 50s and help you avoid long term, serious consequences from the unrecognized disease,” said Dr. Arthi Sanjeevi, a board certified gastroenterologist with Florida Hospital Tampa. “It is important to understand your family history and what you may be at risk for.” Monitor cholesterol levels and keep weight in check to avoid developing fatty liver disease. Have blood and urine tested on an annual basis to check for symptoms of diabetes or thyroid imbalances. Avoid crash diets that can contribute to gall stones, and watch for post-pregnancy issues that can range from pelvic fissures, hemorrhoids and constipation, to gall bladder disease. “Women in their prime years are often taking care of their families and budding careers at the expense of their

56

health. It is in a woman’s best interest to focus on herself early in the game as an investment towards growing older gracefully,” Dr. Arthi Sanjeevi added. Ideally, younger women should undergo physicals with primary care doctors every two to three years in addition to annual ob-gyn visits, according to Dr. Sharon McKenna of BayCare Medical Group. Women in their 40s will be wise to undertake physicals every year or two, but patients with blood pressure or cholesterol irregularities may need medical attention more often, she cautioned. “I tell people that there is no quick fix. They need to take care of their health in general and keep up with their physicals,” said McKenna, a family practitioner who is board certified in osteopathic medicine. Being pro-active about our health can mean getting enough sleep, eating more whole grains and fewer processed foods, engaging in at least 2 1/2 hours of brisk, physical activity weekly and keeping up with regular screenings and improved treatments, like the latest HPV vaccine that prevents infections tied to cervical cancer. “What we do every day does make a big difference. The choices women make now will impact their future and affect how well they live when they are older,” McKenna added.

2 It’s All About A Good Fit

Think your workout isn’t working out? Maybe a change of pace or place will reinvigorate your exercise routine. Chris Field felt she was working out harder than ever but, as she approached her 40s, the results she desired were harder to achieve. A friend recommended a fitness regime not yet available locally, so she checked it out, while traveling to South Florida. The class featured the Lagree Fitness™ Method, a 50-minute group or individual exercise program combining cardio, strength, flexibility, balance and endurance training. Through a series of slow, controlled movements and fast transitions, people of all ages and fitness levels are able to enjoy a full body workout, that gets their heart rates up and converts fat into muscle. Workouts require a specialized piece of equipment, the MegaFormer™, that bears a passing resemblance to a Pilates reformer. “I felt a really good sore after this workout, in the areas I want to target, that I had not felt in a long time,” said Field, owner of Studio Physique, the first studio to offer the Lagree Fitness program in Pinellas County. The former FOX TV sports anchor/reporter is a lifelong fitness fanatic who has played competitive sports and coached track, basketball and swim teams. “Women specifically tell me they’re working muscles they didn’t even know they had. We work deep into the muscle tissue, targeting slow twitch muscle fibers. It’s easy on the joints and great for the back. It’s low impact, but

intense. Lagree Fitness is really the best of both worlds of Pilates and weight training, with cardio thrown in.” Liesyl Reuter, head coach at the Brandon Orangetheory and group personal trainer at the South Tampa site, was working full time as a school teacher in New York, while struggling with weight gain and Stage 2 diabetes. “I made a decision to change my life and get my life back,” Reuter said. “I was always athletic, playing soccer from first grade through college and swimming and diving competitively, but I really fell off.” High intensity training and better food choices helped her shed 40 pounds. After relocating to Florida, Reuter took her first Orangetheory Fitness class. The 60-minute sessions are based on heart-rate monitored training that measures how hard clients are working, while running on a treadmill, engaging abs, arms and legs on an indoor rowing machine and weights or resistance training. “I thought I was in shape, but that class really put me in check,” Reuter added. Reuter now coaches clients of all ages, and all fitness levels through the signature, fast-paced, no-two-are-ever-the-same sessions, conducted at the loud and lively Orangetheory facilities cropping up throughout the Tampa Bay area. “Your health is your wealth. For women, this workout will help maintain bone density, build muscle mass, burn fat and boost their metabolism. When the work is done, you reap the benefits later,” Reuter said.

3 It’s All About The Juice

A personal battle with an auto-immune condition prompted Kelly Lessem to evaluate what foods she ate and how they impacted her health. The yoga instructor, and massage therapist turned to juicing as a means of making better nutritional choices for her body. The co-founder of Squeeze Juice advocates juices made from fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to ensure your body gets what it needs and condition it to crave healthy foods. “Anyone eating a standard American diet in our country right now is probably overfed and malnourished. The majority of the foods people eat are dead, modified or have been fortified with artificial ingredients that the body can not assimilate,” she explained.

60

www.TampaBayMetro.com

A 16-ounce serving is made from fruits and vegetables that are ground to a pulp and then pressed to extract the water; that keeps the nutrients intact, minimizes waste and equates to four to six pounds of produce per bottle. A working mother, Lessem knows women typically put the needs of others first. Juicing can conveniently be added to anyone’s routine, whether they do it at home or find a favorite provider, such as Squeeze Juice, which has locations in South Tampa and downtown St. Petersburg. “Women are natural caregivers and always want to take care of others,” Lessem says. “It can be challenging to make time for ourselves; but if women can make the right choices for themselves, they will make the right choices for their families.”

Escape to Dushi “Sweet” Curacao By Ronda M. Parag

A

recent trip to the beautiful island of Curacao made me realize how small the world really is. I discovered several people from Tampa that grew up on the island, located in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea and 35 miles from Venezuela; and spent an evening out on the town in Curacao with a friend who was born there and lived 14 years in the U.S., but recently returned to her homeland. Traveling certainly brings friends and family together and the opportunity to realize that, as humans, we aren’t really all that different. In the local language of Papiamentu, “dushi” means sweet and if referring to a person, “sweetheart.” After my short stay, I’d say the island is “dushi” and I certainly want to return. Curacao is welcoming to tourists and offers many different type of experiences. The locals speak multiple languages, usually Papiamentu, English, Dutch and Spanish, so conversing is easy. American Airlines via Miami, makes access to the island an easy three hour flight. As part of the ABC islands, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, these islands

offer plenty of water activities and exquisite diving experiences. The crystal clear blue waters, variety of sea life and sunken shipwrecks are ideal for novice divers. Numerous beaches each have their own feel and flavor from family friendly sugar-white sands, to the more remote and rocky romantic. Be sure to visit the Shete Boka National Park on the western shore of Curacao, where the white caps crash into the “bokas” or coves and the views are spectacular. A fun activity that requires no diving experience is the new Aquafari Excursion. After a quick lesson on how to operate the underwater scooter, guests are gliding under the water to see all the exciting marine life. Willemstad is the capital city and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. The ideal way to discover Willemstad is with a Walking Food and City Tour by local guide, Clarita Hagenaar. Clarita greets and smiles, as everyone seems to know her. We walked the Queen Emma Bridge across the St. Anna Bay, which divides the city in two – Punda in the east and Otrobanda to the west. Locals call the bridge the “Swinging Old Lady” or “Pontoon Bridge,” as there are literally 16 pontoons that

www.TampaBayMetro.com

hold up the bridge. There were several stops that allowed the group to taste local foods. The tastiest stop included lunch at the Plasa Bieu, an open air lunch market with long picnic style tables. Local cuisine included different stews such as Yuana (iguana stew), Kabritu Stoba (goat stew), Jamba (okra & seafood soup) and Karko (conch). The portions were large and the prices very reasonable, (about $8 US per plate). Out on the West End, be sure to dine at Jaanchies in Westput. The colorful and friendly owner and his sons serve local cuisine and recite the menu to patrons. The fresh fish and goat and iguana stews are prepared daily and really delicious. A visit to The Floating Market also offered a peek into the local Venezuelan traders that dock their boats filled with fresh fruits and vegetables and fish. For a chic, ultra evening, the Papagayo Restaurant creates an atmosphere that you might find in Miami. The sleek furniture and décor and delicious dining should be on the must-do list. There are numerous hotels, apartments and small inns that are available for lodging. From the well-known, family friendly Hilton Curacao, to the more romantic and intimate, Kontiki Beach Resort, a week’s stay in Curacao will leave you recharged and refreshed, and longing to return to this “dushi” island. Go Richer, Fuller & Bolder What to drink this holiday season | By Kevin Pelley

W

ith the holidays just around the corner, it is now time for wine lovers to focus on celebrating with a special wine. As the cooler weather arrives, so does the opportunity to drink some different styles of wine. If summer is dominated by crisp, clean whites and rosés, then the holiday season affords the luxury of some richer, fuller and bolder styles. Here are some picks that will help make this holiday season the best ever. What would the holiday season be

without bubbly? This year enophiles should be on the lookout for the 2005 Taittinger Comtes De Champagne Blanc de Blancs ($180). This tête de cuvee is all about elegance. The Taittinger’s house style exemplifies elegance by using Chardonnay as the predominant grape in the blend, and relying less on Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier than any other Grande Marques Champagne producer. The result is a clean, light on its feet, mineral and citrus driven wine with a long floral

www.TampaBayMetro.com

finish. Serve this impressive wine with caviar, shellfish, seafood of all kinds and even game birds. Amarone might be the world’s most winery wine. Hailing from the Valpolicella region, just outside of the city of Verona, Amarone is the only wine in the world produced by the process of appassimento. The appassimento process is unique because upon harvest the grapes are sent to well ventilated lofts allowing the grapes to rasinate. The grapes are kept to dry for approximately

four months which intensifies their flavors and concentrates their sugar levels. The partially dried grapes are then fermented into a rich, heady and compelling dry wine style known as Amarone, which literally means bitter strong. The 2001 Masi ‘Mazzano’ Amarone della Valpolicella ($150) is one of the regions finest offering with its flavors of cherry, black plum, raisin, dried fig, dates, cocoa powder, cinnamon, vanilla, mocha and mushrooms. Try serving this incredible wine with hardy preparations such as game, grilled meats or stews. It is often said that Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of red grapes, and this holiday season Cabernet lovers should seek out the 2012 Odette Cabernet Sauvignon ($100). The Odette winery is located in the Stag’s Leap District within Napa Valley. Due to its location in the southern part

of the valley, the wines from this area always possess elegance due to the cooling effect from the nearby San Pablo Bay. The 2012 vintage throughout Napa Valley was superb with powerful, fruit forward wines with ripeness, balance and longevity. The 2012 Odette Cabernet Sauvignon offers flavors of cassis, raspberry liqueur and a gorgeous perfumed nose of dried violets, lavender and savory herbs. The wine possesses a perfect balance of power and elegance and is my pick for the best Cabernet Sauvignon of the year! If you are looking for the perfect finish to your holiday celebrations, then look no further than the Taylor Fladgate 20 Year Tawny ($50). For more than 300 years Portugal’s Taylor Fladgate has been synonymous with remarkable consistency and exceptional quality. Now into its fourth century, Taylor Fladgate is the only winery in

Portugal that has remained 100 percent family run throughout its history. The wine brings to mind all things caramelized including flavors of crème brulee, toffee and crème caramel. The wine is silky and well balanced with high acidity inviting a second and third sip. The palate is a mix of fig, dates, dried apricots and a toasty, nutty long and delicious finish. Try serving this alongside a wide array of dessert or on its own to wow your guests this holiday season. If you serve these wines this holiday season, you will not only satisfy your friends and family, but look like a pro without having to study for your Master Sommeleir exam. Cheers and happy holidays! Sip and Savor Annata Wine Bar | By Ronda M. Parag

T

The perfect pairing of wine and cheese will delight those guests looking for a light dining experience. Hernandez says the charcuterie and cheeses are one of the most popular offerings. Available with a pick three, five or seven option, there are usually eight or nine meat and cheese offerings on the menu, along with a couple off-menu items to mix and match. The servers are trained to make recommendations in putting together a tasty blend of soft and hard cheeses and meats. The choice of cheeses includes a variety such as the Mazzaro Grana Riserva and the Robiola Due Latte, both from Italy. A tasty Bay Blue hails from California. Meats include Speck, a dry age and the Prosciutto Di Parma, along with several types of salami and a Paté of the Day. Rounding out the board is marcona almonds from Italy, Florida orange blossom honey, quince paste and a marinated blend of olives.

The menu rounds out with a variety of plates from the gluten free Chicken and Kale Ravioli to the Sweet Potato Gnocchi. A few of the more popular plates, according to Hernandez are the Lamb Ragu, Truffle Gnocchi Mac and Cheese and the Scallops. The Pan Seared Scallops are served three to a plate atop creamed corn, tomato, bacon, pickled jalapeño and cilantro pesto. For dessert, there are two options: a Chocolate Salami, which is a sweet blend of rolled biscotti, nuts, dolce gorgonzola, topped with strawberries and fig jam preserves, or the Orange Torte served topped with salted caramel gelato. Either of these desserts provide a sweet finish to end a special evening at Annata’s. M 300 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701 727.851.9582 www.annatawine.com

ucked into a small and intimate space on Beach Drive is a gem of a wine bar that offers chic indoor or alfresco seating. Now that the weather has cooled, just a bit, Annata’s offers the ideal spot to have a glass of wine, a plate of delicious bites and a perch for people watching. Discovering the need for a wine bar in downtown St. Pete, the famed Mazzaro’s Italian Market decided to lead the charge. Annata’s has developed quite a reputation for its cheese and charcuterie. René Hernández, General Manager and Sommelier, says the restaurant has been going strong and there have been a few menu changes including the addition of seasonal items and Floribbean cuisine expected in a few months. There are nearly 30 wines by the glass arranged on the menu from light to dark, as well as, a nice selection of bottles in a variety of price ranges.
