Publisher’s Notes Enjoy every day. The fall in Tampa Bay has seen slightly less humid temperatures and nice breezes. It is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy walks along the Riverwalk in downtown Tampa, or one of the many outdoor festivals in the Tampa Bay area. There are also many charitable events to attend and support, including relief for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. Help fight homelessness by attending the Salvation Army’s Doing the Most Good Luncheon, that kicks off the 125th Anniversary celebration of the Army’s work in Tampa/Hillsborough County. One in eight women will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. In Trends in Women’s Health, Breast Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Gabordi, with St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, believes genetic testing can help some women detect genetic mutations, along with their personal risk factors and family history, to have life-saving results. A new medical facility in Wesley Chapel, Inspiration Place at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, combines a medical center and spa to create a comprehensive approach for women. The goal is to make healthcare more convenient and empower women to take care of themselves. METRO also showcases 23 Inspiring Women in Business in this issue. While their backgrounds are diverse, these women are involved in businesses that make the Tampa Bay area a better place to live, work and play. The interior, of former CEO of HSN and current CEO of Weight Watcher’s Mindy Grossman and husband, Neil’s condo, was designed by Rob Bowen of Rob Bowen Design. In METROHome Tour, the high-rise condo showcases the stunning views and highlights the beautiful water and city views of downtown St. Petersburg. If you need a beach escape, consider the beautiful beaches of Destin and a stay at The Henderson. The Emerald Coast has beautiful white sand and natural dunes and of course, the sparkling emerald-hued waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Enjoy,

Creating VIP Experiences in Las Vegas Meet: Tampa Bay Area Local Nick Palazzolo By Ronda M. Parag

Growing up in Tarpon Springs, Nick Palazzolo knew he loved the night life and club scene. So at the young age of 21, Palazzolo started his own company called Pzone Productions, that would promote and operate certain nights at clubs throughout the area. “I discovered at an early age, that I had the ability to bring people together and show them a great time,” said Palazzolo, now the Director of Player Development for Caesars Entertainment. In 2008, Palazzolo began his career as a casino host at the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa. “The Seminole Hard Rock was a great place to get my feet

14

wet and learn the proper procedures and skills, to learn how to be an efficient host,” said Palazzolo. “I am very grateful to the Tampa Hard Rock for giving me my start.” The nightlife and the excitement of Las Vegas drew Nick Palazzolo and then girlfriend, now wife, Amber, to Las Vegas in 2011. “I was able to get in at the Hard Rock Vegas as a casino host and I worked my way up in the city and in 2014, I was recruited by Caesars Entertainment to open their newest property, The Cromwell, as an Executive Casino Host,” said Palazzolo. “It was after much hard work and a very successful

www.TampaBayMetro.com

first year of being with Caesars Entertainment, that I was promoted to Director of Player Development for their nine properties in the Las Vegas market.” “The appealing part of being the Director of Player Development, is it gives me the ability to be creative in the VIP guest experience,” said Palazzolo. “Whether that be flying guests on a private jet to LA for a Dodgers game, sitting ringside at a UFC fight or racing exotic race cars at the Vegas speedway, I have to be able to create that “wow factor” and differentiate myself from the competition. I take pride in showing guests an amazing experience.” When Nick and his family return home to the Tampa Bay area, the first thing he does is race right to the water. Palazzolo says that he had a boat license before he had an automobile driver’s license. “I have always been on wave runners and boats since I was a child, and there is nothing more I miss than boating on the Gulf of Mexico,” said Palazzolo. He also gets his buddies from Tarpon Springs High School together for a couple rounds of golf at his favorite courses at Innisbrook. His wife, Amber and daughter, Pia, age 3, are Disney fanatics, so they always include a family trip to Disney World. Palazzolo offers some great advice when traveling to Las Vegas. “Set up your reservations prior to arrival and decide how much you plan to spend,” said Palazzolo. “I also strongly suggest people venture off the strip. Las Vegas has so many great things to offer from: incredible desert golf courses to dune buggies in the desert. Most people don’t know that Las Vegas has a mountain, where you can go snow skiing in less than one hour from the strip.” Palazzolo adds that there are many different experiences in Las Vegas, but guests must be prepared to spend some money. When in Las Vegas, Palazzolo says, “Most importantly, make sure you have a great host, that takes care of you.”

CITY: Susanne Bartsch — Art-A-Porter When: October 6, 2017 Where: Tampa Museum of Art It was colorful, flamboyant and certainly a break from tradition, for the 8th annual CITY: Fashion + Art + Culture. Rescheduled due to Hurricane Irma, all the designers, suppliers and supporters of the Tampa Museum of Art came ready to celebrate. The “Queen of the Night” and event hostess, Susanne Bartsch, was wearing a nude body suit under a pouffy pink tulle and worked her charm and magic for the event, into the late night after party, Barstchland. New York DJ, Amber Valentine, played great music and kept the crowd dancing. Drag Queen Joey Arias performed several times throughout the evening. CITY co-chairs Pamela Wysocki, Billy Cole, and the entire committee, created a successful event, along with the Museum staff. Eight designers created the looks in an interactive show that featured the outrageous and bold. From Casey Caldwell’s designs with models wearing full face masks to Hana Quist’s use of knits made with large bundles of yarn, the designers showcased their designs. Designer Veritee Hill showcased a gothic glam with long black skirts and black lace that could spread like wings. The models descended the museum staircase and strutted to the pre-arranged vignette spaces. Guests enjoyed open bar and delicious food from Eddie V’s Prime Seafood. Color, Texture, Sophistication & Creativity posh custom-designed high-rise condo By Mary Lou Janson

T

he private elevator opens to reveal bold black and red monogrammed carpeting, marking the entrance to the custom-designed condominium, just beyond the mirrored doors guarded by two lions hand-carved from wood. Overhead, but not to be overlooked, an Italian chandelier displays a variety of colors and shapes. No two globes are alike. A domed ceiling dazzles from the inlaid mirrored pieces that took four weeks to hand install. Glass beads embellish foyer walls forming patterns similar to the natural markings on a snake’s skin. Welcome to the Florida home of Mindy Grossman, the former CEO of home-shopping retailer HSN, and current CEO of Weight Watchers. Grossman initially envisioned designing an interior integrating the stunning views and hues found in the sky and waterfront, visible from the high-rise Ovation condominium. “I wanted the design to bring that to life,” Grossman said. “I wanted color, texture and something sophisticated but very interesting.” A mutual acquaintance introduced the successful executive to acclaimed interior designer Rob Bowen, of Rob Bowen Design Group. They clicked, collaborated on the condo and currently are working together on their third project, a New York home for Grossman and her husband. “Many designers have a signature look and a specificity,” Grossman said. “Rob can design to the environment and to the space. He is incredibly creative.”

“Through our mutual respect and admiration, we were able to truly challenge each other during this process,” Bowen recalled. “Mindy really pushed me beyond my comfort level to dial into her vision. I believe we perfectly executed what she wanted and it flows beautifully throughout the home.”

Within the curved walls of the 3,700-square-foot home, the partners-in-design created different, distinctive looks for each bedroom, bathroom, his and her offices, formal dining area, salon, living room and kitchen. Antique limestone floors and Venetian plaster walls bordered by black baseboards and molding, provide polish and understated elegance to the areas guests first encounter upon entering. “The kitchen was meant to be very clean so that it would not be distracting from the rest of the environment,” Grossman said. “I wanted people to walk in and take in the whole vista.” Shades of blue, green, teal and turquoise create synergy between the living room decor and the open air and open water views, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. The free-flowing floor plan allows for a seamless transition to the salon and formal dining areas, where subtle shades of blue crop up in the custom carpets and hand embroidered silk material used to shade windows and upholster chairs. Original works of art the couple has collected, are displayed throughout the halls and walls. Other design elements were commissioned specifically for the condo, relocated from another family residence and repurposed or simply acquired and added to an evergrowing collection of found objects, that now have a place in the space, as well as in Grossman’s heart.

“Because there is no definition between rooms, each space had to have its own personality and character,” Bowen said. “You want that common DNA that runs through every space, but you want each room to have individuality.”

“It is all a collection of Mindy’s favorite pieces and a representation of her personality,” said Bowen. Among the more recent additions to the collection, is a preserved peacock that has a bird’s eye view of the St. Petersburg skyline and shoreline. “I loved the idea of the peacock. It picked up all of the blues in the water and was perfect,” Grossman added, noting that there are numerous animal influences throughout the household ranging from crocodile and stingray skins, to leopard-patterned prints and zebra stripes.

Bold colors, patterns, symmetry and sparkling accents that Bowen refers to as jewelry, are evident everywhere. A large, wall-mounted handmade mosaic serves as a backdrop for the master bedroom. Floors display geometric shapes to dark wood planks. Light fixtures featuring delicate amethyst flower petals to sconces fashioned from Swarovski crystals brighten bathrooms. Natural materials contribute an organic aesthetic to interior. Lacquer and marble add luster, while manmade components, like lucite bed posts and an acrylic base for a desk, contribute a contemporary vibe. One wall treatment incorporates thousands of feathers. Add a custom terra cotta glass floor tile and a gold leaf pedestal, and far from being nondescript, the bathroom is positively iridescent.

Local Trends In Women’s Health Care By Mary Lou Janson

Throughout the Tampa Bay area, state-of-the-art facilities and medical procedures are providing women with easier and more effective ways to maintain and monitor their health than ever before.

How DNA Helps In The Battle Against Cancer You lead a healthy lifestyle, faithfully follow routine medical care and dutifully undergo prescribed screenings in hopes of preventing or detecting anything out of the ordinary. For most women that may be enough to monitor their wellbeing. Others may require more in-depth genetic tests, analyzing DNA for any damaged genes passed on from their parents. Certain cancers, particularly those affecting breasts and ovaries, can impact family members for generations. “We are talking about genetic mutations that disrupt our natural functions and do not allow the body to protect itself from cancer,” said Dr. Robert Gabordi, a breast surgical oncologist with St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Robert Gabordi, a breast surgical oncologist with St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, counsels a patient.

“We want to find patients who may be suspicious for breast cancer syndromes. But we need to evaluate each patient based on their personal risk factors and family history,” Gabordi cautioned. Gabordi, along with his colleague, Nurse Practitioner Miok Ray, became certified in genetic testing and counseling through City of Hope, an organization that is recognized as a world leader, in the research and treatment of diseases like cancer. Genetic mutations, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, actually represent a small percentage of breast cancers. Roughly 5-10 percent of breast cancers, and 23 percent of ovarian cancers, are traced to inheritable factors, so genetic testing may not be warranted for everyone. After assessment by qualified medical professionals, patients who are good candidates for genetic testing (see sidebar) simply provide a saliva or blood sample.

Gabordi explains that pre- and post-test counseling is extremely important to ensure patients understand the significance of positive or negative test results, and how those findings may affect themselves and their families. “If you have a genetic mutation, there is a 50 percent chance of passing it along to your sons or daughters. Males often are silent carriers who are unaffected by breast cancer, but can pass an abnormal gene along to their daughters, who may be at much higher risk,” he said. “The information can be difficult to understand. Even if the test is negative that is valuable information to know. There may be other family members who need to be tested,” he added, noting it is essential to track three generations to map out a complete family history. Genetic testing began Who should have genetic testing? gaining popularity several years ago. Inspiring and Innovative Approach to Women’s Healthcare Juggling a crowded calendar, packed with personal and professional demands, sometimes forces decisions that can result in delaying routine medical check-ups or postponing procedures. There’s not always enough time to make the rounds of various medical providers, especially when locations are widespread and office hours vary from practice-to-practice. What if there was a way to make multiple medical appointments for the same day at the same location? Why not include the added convenience of spa treatments, administered within the same complex, plus a coffee bar featuring Tampa Bay’s own Buddy Brew brand? Now that’s an idea whose time has come, at least for the Tampa Bay area. Florida Hospital’s Inspiration Place became what may be the first facility of its kind when it opened its doors in Wesley Chapel this fall. “As a professional female, whose husband is also a professional, I find it sometimes impossible to schedule everything I need for my own health as well as for everyone else,” said Denyse Bales-Chubb, president and CEO of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. “We barely have time to schedule multiple visits for routine exams we need, much less those that require additional testing and further follow up.” The 12,000-square-foot medical center and spa provides a wide range of screenings, therapies and treatments designed to care for “women in all ages and stages of life,” according to its web site, www.FHInspirationPlace.org. Among the health services available are a breast surgeon, OB-GYN, urologist and endocrinologist. The center also offers women’s imaging services including mammograms, ultrasounds, bone density scans and stereotactic breast biopsies, plus pelvic floor therapy. Spa services encompass various massages and skin care treatments that can be booked before or after the patient’s doctor’s visit, scan or physical therapy. “We need to take care of ourselves physically, but also spiritually and mentally,” Bales-Chubb explained. Among the many ways Inspiration Place puts patients first is by providing concierge services to assist with the

initial scheduling. All medical personnel and staff members are female. And, once a patient is on-site, a navigator can adjust appointments to accommodate any delays or unforeseen circumstances. Consider the convenience of having a mammogram and getting the results during the same visit, or adding an ultrasound, on-the-spot, if that is a recommended next step.

Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel’s 12,000-square-foot medical center and spa provides a wide range of screenings, therapies and treatments designed to care for women in all ages and stages of life.

Initially, medical services are available weekdays, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with spa treatments from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. “We hope to expand and include weekend availability to provide more options for our patients,” said Marcelle Triantafilou, director of women’s health, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. ”It will be important to stay in touch with the women coming through, and ask them what we can

do to meet their needs.” “This new concept represents a more well-rounded approach to health care and wellness that will empower women,” Bales-Chubb said. “We are truly thinking about women. By making health care more convenient for them they are able take control of their lives and better care of themselves.” M

The expansive Living Room with high ceilings and a wall of windows that face the beach & preserve

Reminiscent of a luxurious grand seaside manner of yesteryear, The Henderson seamlessly blends modern resort conveniences with the nostalgia of Old Florida. Guests arrive in a Grand Courtyard, which leads to an Expansive Living Room with high ceilings and a wall of windows, that faces the Henderson Beach State Park & Preserve and beach. Specifically designed to connect guests to the environment, the resort is infused with several quaint gathering areas. Every aspect of The Henderson has been meticulously planned and the art displayed throughout the property is no exception. Thirteen local Destin artists were chosen to create custom pieces, specifically for The Henderson. Each piece has been thoughtfully placed throughout the resort - the result is a stunning coastal resort with an inspired sense of place. The Henderson celebrates Destin’s Gulfto-Table seafood traditions, while also serving a fine selection of steaks and chops and creatively healthy fare. The resort offers a signature restaurant, Primrose, with a display kitchen and a dedicated experience with freshly prepared sushi. It also features a striking octagonal shaped bar, Horizons, a poolside grill called Sea Level, an old-fashioned ice cream shop named Sprinkles, and intimate dining on the beach.

The fall season doesn’t mean just changes in fashion, but also means changes to the menus of restaurants all around town. Owned by Chef Fabrizio and his wife, Ingrid Aielli, Sea Salt St. Petersburg continues to offer delicious seafood entrees, that delight the palette under the direction of Chef Kenny Tufo. With the cooler temperatures and the availability of seasonal ingredients, Sea Salt debuts new items for their Fall menu. “We’re presenting ‘Fall on a Plate,’ using root vegetables, savory and earthy flavors, and more hearty textures,” said Chef Tufo. “Remaining true to our Italianleaning, coastal seafood cuisine, a good example is our new Faroe Island salmon with squid ink panko, braised onion, Peruvian potatoes, acorn squash and horseradish creme.

We’ll also debut Hawaiian opah poke with sesame seeds and a wakame seaweed salad. In harmony with the fall and winter season, we’re introducing a game dish — a wild boar ragout, and our signature lobster risotto is always popular.” As the name of the restaurant, Chef has access to over 130 salts from around the world to season the innovative dishes, many of which can be found in Chef Fabrizio’s cook book, Sea Salt. A variety of salts are also displayed in tiny white

dishes on guests’ tables. If you are searching for the tastiest oysters from the East or West Coasts or local Gulf Coast, the 80 - foot raw bar does not disappoint. The Fisherman’s Grill & Display Case shows the freshest catches of the day. A perfect start to any meal is the “Fire & Ice” Platter with a selection of oysters, shrimp, and lobster tail and crispy calamari, baked oyster rockefeller, and mini crab cakes.
