Publisher’s Notes Filled with Passion and Heart.
METRO is once again proud to support the American Heart Association and its community leaders who are Leading With Heart. February is heart month and AHA says that 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented with simple lifestyle changes. It is a great time of year to get outside and enjoy all the activities that continue to surround Tampa’s Gasparilla Festivities. From the Gasparilla Distance Classic, to arts, music and movies, there is something for everyone. On March 2-9, the Gasparilla International Film Festival hosts eight days of movies, director chats, networking events and parties. It is a great time to enjoy the creative works of the talented filmmakers, directors and actors. The 8th annual Gasparilla Music Festival is two-days (March 11 - 12) of music, with over 40 talented bands and musicians taking the stage in downtown Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Park. In St. Petersburg, the streets of downtown turn into a mini Monte Carlo, as the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg kicks off the Indy Series at the first race of the season (March 10 - 12). Writer Mary Lou Janson discovers a few ways to enjoy the race, VIP style in Catch the Exhilarating Laps From The Lap of Luxury. Also, we catch up with local St. Pete resident, Susie Wheldon, who is opening a women’s and men’s clothing boutique on Central Avenue in the Arts district. Dr. Randy & Kelly Feldman open their home to METRO for a look at their newly remodeled Davis Islands stunner in METROHome Tour. The contemporary design and décor blends both style and comfort. METRO is part of the community and we support many local charities and their upcoming events. We hope you will support their great works and we’ll see you there!

On Exhibit at Tampa Museum of Art Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present The exhibition currently on display at the Tampa Museum of Art was created in hopes to bring a new audience to the museum. The 217 photographs by more than 154 photographers showcase different sports from around the globe. “The Tampa Museum of Art is honored to be able to bring to the Tampa Bay community this incredible exhibition organized by the Brooklyn Museum of Art, as the TMA is committed to educating, discussing, and collecting photographs from the mid-19th century forward,” said Michael Tomor, TMA’s Executive Director. The museum also exhibits Lens on Tampa Bay Sports, which showcases the local talents of eight local sports photographers, with 40 images of memorable sports moments of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning and others. METRO had the opportunity to interview curator, Gail Buckland, Benjamin Menschel Distinguished Visiting Professor at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Printed is a partial interview. For the complete interview with Gail Buckland, visit www.tampabaymetro.com.

Gail Buckland, Exhibit Curator
METRO: What was your inspiration for this exhibition and book? GAIL BUCKLAND: My previous exhibition and book Who Shot Rock And Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present (Knopf, 2009), was a huge success. The exhibition was on view at 10 art museums. One of the most meaningful aspects of doing the project was bringing people into art museums who don’t normally come. Rock and roll is one of the greatest social revolutions the world had ever known. Once I began thinking about what other photographers have been left out of the history of photography, I realized that the men and women who have photographed sports with such professionalism, skill, imagination and commitment have also been excluded.
www.TampaBayMetro.com
M: Are you a sports buff? GB: I am definitely not a “sports buff.” I am a photography “buff,” — actually, more than that. I have dedicated my professional life to looking at and thinking about photographs. M: How does art/photography transcend or overcome the lack of knowledge on subject matter? GB: A good photograph is a good photograph, regardless of the reason it was made. The critical skills I developed over 40 years apply to sports photographs as they apply to other types of pictures. M: Photographers are much like athletes on the field and in the moment. Tell us more. GB: Sports photographers are highly competitive. They all want the shot that will be remembered after the game finishes or the Olympics end. They train physically because sports photography is very demanding. Sports photographers often say they have the best job in the world. Sports is about being in the moment – whether you are the athlete, spectator or photographer. Still photographers are masters of moments. M: Which images are your favorites? GB: All the pictures are my favorites, as I looked through thousands to make the final selection. Ultimately, each picture in the exhibition and book was chosen because it is a wonderful photograph in itself that helps carry the story of the men and women who have given sports its indelible image. Two favorites include: Nat Fein’s photograph of Babe Ruth saying farewell at Yankee Stadium, in 1948, and Neil Leifer’s photograph of Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston, Lewiston, Maine, 1965.
Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present will be on display at the Tampa Museum of Art through April 30. For more information and hours, call 813.274.8130 or visit www.tampamuseum.org.

“I think about the heart health of my pediatric patients every day, but meeting with and listening to the powerful Go Red women who are taking a stand against heart disease has inspired me to take a proactive approach to reducing my own risk for heart disease. I have changed my diet to decrease my blood sugar and I’ve increased my exercise to build a healthier heart muscle. My favorite exercise time is walking with my dogs.”
“When I agreed to Chair the Circle of Red, I already had a pretty heart healthy routine. But as chair, I challenged myself to step it up. I increased my exercise and started a food diary to assess my daily intake of calories, protein, carbohydrates and saturated fat. My fat to muscle ratio has improved significantly. While I have inherited a cholesterol problem, my recent blood test revealed that every metric improved and my “high risk” lipid and lipid protein values moved to moderate risk and optimal!”
“In 2016, I was diagnosed with heart disease after ignoring the symptoms for four years. Go Red For Women absolutely inspired me. I’ve been talking about women’s health at work and with my girlfriends. I’ve been doing more research and I’ve increased my exercise. I now wear an activity tracker and I take the proper medications. My goal is if I exercise enough that maybe I won’t have to take this medication forever.”

“The Go Red For Women campaign is an inspiration for me and since my heart attack, I have been motivated to live a healthier lifestyle. I now realize that God did not mean for me to change people but to encourage them to make a change. I’ve stopped starting a diet every Monday then going off it by Thursday. I exercise five days a week. I know and track my numbers. The American Heart Association Tampa Bay social networks have encouraged and uplifted me, and connected me with others who are living through similar experiences.”

“I’ve learned in my time working with the American Heart Association that women often tend to take on the caretaker role and put others before themselves. In 2016, my family and I faced a lot of difficult, emotional times and my health took a backseat. But I am now playing catch-up because I know that's not the right thing to do. More than ever we are made aware of how our health is important to us. The American Heart Association can only do good for ourselves and those we love. Healthy living should be a priority for everyone.”

“Since getting involved with Circle of Red, I’ve been inspired to make my health a priority. I rediscovered my love of fitness, and I’ve made a commitment to healthy eating. I’ve switched to mostly eating lean meats and I’ve cut out a majority of sugar and increased the amount of fruits and vegetables in my diet. I had convinced myself that I was too busy to find time to work out. Now I schedule the time on my calendar for a month at a time, and treat it like a commitment that I can’t miss. I’ve lost about 20 pounds over the past year, but more importantly, I feel better.”

Championing Heart Health From The Top Down
Bill Muir and his son Nick at an obstacle 5K
Strong leadership is essential to the success of all aspects of business, and workplace health promotion is no exception. The American Heart Association’s CEO Roundtable “Employee Health Survey Topline Results,” presented by Nielsen, revealed that employees who feel encouraged by senior management to participate (in workplace health activities) are more likely to report positive outcomes. Two local leaders embracing this approach, as well as physical activity — personally and professionally — are Bill Muir, COO of Jabil, and Jeanne Tate of The Law Offices of Jeanne T. Tate, P.A. “I really enjoy cycling, running and spending time in the gym,” said Muir. “I’m blessed to live on Davis Islands, which has awesome cycling and running groups. And the view from Bayshore is hard to beat! Being active gives me greater energy for work. I’m more productive and happier when I’m working out hard.” Jabil is an ardent supporter of the American Heart Association, and a commitment to health and wellness is highly encouraged in the workplace. “Jabil has a very active culture. Many of our employees have competed in triathlons, running races and mud runs,” Muir said. “Our folks across the globe have done arduous cycling climbs. Many of these are done as a team.”
Jeanne Tate and her daughter Mandi, who received a heart transplant at 8 years old
Tate’s commitment to physical activity, and her motivation to integrate healthy living with her professional life, is inspired by her family’s experiences and understanding of heart health. “Because my daughter had a heart transplant at the age of eight, it’s really brought into sharp focus the importance of cardiovascular health, particularly since heart disease is the number one killer of Americans including women,” said Tate. “We actively promote the American Heart Association at our place of employment. We get out and walk for Heart Walk and National Walking Day.” Tate doesn’t stop there. She has expanded her efforts to include other Tampa Bay area lawyers. “I’ve been very committed to involving lawyers in the Tampa Bay Heart Walk,” said Tate. “We’ve brought American Heart Association education into law firms, and into the Hillsborough County Bar Association. People are getting their blood pressure checked, they know their cholesterol, and they know their risk factors for heart disease.” Exercise has been an integral part of Tate’s life since she was a child. Tate played intramural sports in college — from basketball and volleyball to softball and flag football — and she was honored as the outstanding intramural athlete of the year when she
graduated from the University of Florida. Tate’s schedule is hectic but whether it’s yoga, running with her dog or engaging her core on an exercise ball, she makes time for exercise. “I have four children and I’m a busy businessperson managing my law firm and two adoption agencies. Every day brings a different challenge for how to stay active so I make conscious efforts to move throughout the day,” said Tate. “We all have 24 hours a day. You need to make physical health an important part of your day. Five or 10 minutes here and there adds up and keep you feeling good. Stand up on a phone call, swing your arms, bend side to side — stay engaged.” If you’re struggling to make exercise a regular part of your routine, Tate and Muir share similar advice on overcoming the first hurdle: “The hardest part is getting started. It’s hard to go from doing nothing to trying to do too much. Start with baby steps and with smaller buckets throughout the day,” said Tate. “I read a Dutch proverb recently which stuck with me: ‘He who is outside his door has the hardest part of his journey behind him’. Once you take that first step, it gets easier every time and becomes habit forming,” said Muir.

Check. Change. Control. For Better Heart Health At Work If you visit the Clearwater campus of Bouchard Insurance, you might find a lot of empty desks. That’s because this health conscious worksite embraces walking meetings. The importance of staying active during the workday recently received a healthy boost when the company signed up for the American Heart Association’s Check. Change. Control. program. Sponsored by BayCare, this initiative helps employees identify, lower and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. “High blood pressure is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease that’s too often ignored in the absence of structured monitoring opportunities,” said Ed Rafalski, BayCare Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer. “We’re in the business of saving lives. Providing participants with the knowledge to track and manage their blood pressure significantly reduces their chances of dying from either a heart attack or stroke.”
Nearly half of all Bouchard employees committed to participating in the Change. Check. Control. program, which consisted of taking two blood pressure readings a month for a total of four consecutive months. Program participants also enjoyed a series of heart-healthy lunch and learn workshops and received text messages reminding them when it was time to check their blood pressure. “I truly feel as though the American Heart Association saved my life, as I had no idea as to how high my blood pressure was prior to attending this program,” said one grateful Bouchard employee. Awareness sparks change. Today, top management reports that more Bouchard employees are making heart-healthy choices than ever before. From prioritizing fitness to simply paying more attention to their diet and stress levels, Bouchard who completed the
Longtime Bouchard employee Angie Eisele checks her blood pressure
program collectively reduced their systolic blood pressure by an impressive 12 points, more than twice their baseline goal. “The numbers were staggering,” said Doug Bishop, Chief Executive Officer of Bouchard Insurance. “Fifteen percent of our staff reduced their chance of death by 30 to 50 percent. When you put those numbers out in front of anyone, I don’t care who you are; you recognize that this is a program that produced life for our organization.”
The Sunshine City Has Heart think the Sunshine City would make the cut. Under the administration of Mayor Rick Kriseman and Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, the city has taken incredibly progressive steps to improve the health of all St. Pete residents. said Deputy Mayor Tomalin. “In 2016, we have had more than 2,000 team members take the training, and one life saved by a team member only three days after receiving his training.” Just two months after announcing that more than 3,000 city employees will become equipped with the lifesaving skill of CPR, Mayor Kriseman signed a policy that requires all food and beverage vending machines on city-owned property to comply with the AHA’s guidelines for healthy vending. This stance on better vending selections is unprecedented in the state of Florida, and the announcement positioned the city as a national leader in promoting healthy choices. “At the City of St. Petersburg we try to lead by example, which is why we implemented the heart healthy vending policy,” said Mayor Kriseman. “We are committed to building a culture of health internally because we believe it will inspire a culture of health in the community as well.”

Hillsborough County Public School Leaders Encourage Heart-Health Programs
Dr. Alberto Vasquez – Chief of Staff, Jeff Eakins – Superintendent, Cindy Stuart – School Board Chair
If you walked into Rampello Downtown Partnership School on Dec. 16, 2016, around 3:30 p.m., you would have found yourself enveloped with positive energy and enthusiastic chatter as a press conference announcing Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) increase in graduation rates by 3.1% was winding down. In the county’s press release, HCPS
Superintendent Jeff Eakins was quoted as saying, “This is why we are here. Our job is to prepare students for life.” Eakins and other HCPS leadership have been noticeably making their mark on Tampa Bay’s youth. And they’re not just in the business of preparing students for life, they’re also in the business of saving lives. In the past year, HCPS leadership has been dedicated to working with the American Heart Association (AHA) on numerous heart initiatives. The district team is one of only several in the country that has a groundbreaking partnership with the AHA: The AHA is written into the district’s strategic plan, falling into the service learning pillar of their eight-pillar model of building strong school culture. “I recognize how the actions of our students, families and staff can positively impact the overall heart health of a large metropolitan community
like Hillsborough County,” said Cindy Stuart, HCPS School Board Chair. One of the most impactful achievements on the heart health front in 2016 was the school board’s adoption of local policy that requires all Hillsborough County public high school students to learn hands-on CPR before graduating. This effort was championed by Physical Education Supervisor Steve Vanoer and former School Board Member Carol Kurdell. This local policy ensures an estimated 13,000 new lifesavers are trained in Tampa Bay each year. More than 70,740 local students have also been impacted by Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart, and Superintendent Eakins has set a goal of 100% participation by 2017. “There is a huge collective impact when student service-learning projects like AHA programming and CPR training are used to support a healthier, stronger quality of life,” said Eakins.
Your heart deserves the best, and you can find it all in one place.

James Ronzo, D.O. and Frank Bono, D.O.
Doctors of Distinction
BIOSPINE INSTITUTE Specialties: Orthopedic Spine Surgery
The BioSpine Institute is a private spine surgery practice that provides relief from neck and back pain through advanced minimally invasive surgery. The outpatient surgery center and new patient clinic, both in Tampa’s Westshore District, are the realized vision of two pioneers in the field, Dr. Frank Bono and Dr. James Ronzo. They were committed to building an institute dedicated to a singular purpose: to improve the lives of patients by perfecting the art and science of minimally invasive spine surgery, while providing an unparalleled experience made memorable by attention to every detail, comprehensive communication, and outstanding surgical results.
The vision began almost 15 years ago when, after medical school and additional fellowship training, Dr. James Ronzo and Dr. Frank Bono started a very successful practice in Central Florida, where they made the decision to focus exclusively on minimally invasive spine surgery. This was at a time when the huge majority of spine surgeons were still performing back surgery using the traditional, open method, a highly invasive procedure which led to a long and painful recovery. This new minimally invasive approach meant the entire procedure could be performed through a tiny ž'' incision, which led to less pain, less scarring, and a much faster recovery. Dr. Frank Bono and Dr. James Ronzo have now treated over 35,000
patients and performed over 14,000 minimally invasive surgical procedures. This places them among the most accomplished spine surgeons in the country. Minimally invasive spine surgery is certainly a field where experience matters. In addition to their extensive experience, Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono quickly realized through their participation in organizations such as the North American Spine Society that their surgical outcomes were among the best in the nation. They felt compelled to bring this standard of excellence to a new and larger population of patients in Greater Tampa Bay, and so is born the BioSpine Institute, a place where the experience makes all the difference.

Catch the exhilirating laps
from the lap of luxury Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg | By Mary Lou Janson
Some may argue the streets of St. Petersburg see their fair share of fast cars throughout the year, but the return of the Firestone Grand Prix on March 10 - 12 officially transforms downtown into a professional course, hosting what is billed as “the fastest racing series on the planet.” The 1.8-mile, 14-turn waterfront track provides race fans with lots of great vantage points to view the high speed action from the grandstands, nearby high rise buildings and even the expansive waterfront. But what about those race enthusiasts who want to watch these sleek racing machines speed through the laps while they enjoy reveling in the lap of luxury? Fortunately, there are VIP options that can place discriminating fans close to the action, providing behind-the-scenes access and still keep them feeling fully pampered. While the boat slips exclusively reserved for the Firestone Grand Prix Yacht Club St. Petersburg sold out weeks before the event, there is a waiting list in case of cancellations. The private floating docks where sailboats, powerboats and yachts can drop anchor, offer

A three-day VIP Club Pass allows entry to the VIP Club suite and the IndyCar Series Paddock, where race crews scramble to keep their cars running and their drivers competing for the win. Daily food and beverage service is included for a cost of $850 plus tax. A three-day Trackside Club pass offers access to the Trackside Club, IndyCarSeries Paddock and provides continental breakfast and lunch plus two drink tickets, all for $495 plus tax. For the really high rollers, there is an option to get together a group within the comfort of a private suite,or from an above-thecrowd rooftop spot. The first gives a group of up to 40 people three day access to a pit lane suite that goes for $25,000, plus tax and catering. The second option offers the height of hospitality in a 50 person rooftop chalet that’s going for $15,000 plus. And when the racing is over and it’s time to rest? Why not call it a night in one of the Presidential Suites at the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel? The spacious comfort afforded by these elegant 1,420- and 1,600-square-foot suites is typically available for $1,800 per night. M

ocated on a prominent, half-acre pinnacle of land offering enviable views of the nearby Davis Island Yacht Club, landmark Peter O. Knight Airport, Seaplane Basin and surrounding neighborhood, the single-family home had long ago lost its luster due to time and neglect. The original, custom home
of car magnate Bill Newman built in 1990, was once quite state-of-the-moment and still sported “good bones. When a high profile Tampa couple, Dr. Randy and Kelly Feldman, expanded their house hunting efforts beyond Hyde Park and Palma Ceia to include Davis Islands, they looked past the problems,
saw true potential and purchased the dwelling with grand plans in mind. Nearly two years later, after stripping the two-story structure down to the studs and rebuilding, replacing or refining almost every element, a stunning, stylish space emerged that is as inviting as it is impressive.

“Randy and I wanted a place that was comfortable for our family but conducive to hosting and entertaining,” said Kelly Feldman, whose background in interior design and ability to research global resources, came in quite handy in her quest to create the warm and welcoming décor, occupying nearly 5,000 square feet of living space.
Boasting a floor plan that encompasses a formal dining room, a large kitchen with hand-cut, mirrored backsplash tiles and two islands, one carved from a single 1,500-pound slab of marble that comfortably seats six, a cozy, corner wet bar as well as a hidden room resembling an upscale nightclub lounge, the first floor offers lots of ways for the Feldman’s to host cocktail parties for personal friends, or formal banquets for the numerous philanthropic causes they support. Also suitable for entertaining are the spacious backyard pool and patio, as well as the approximate 2,000 square feet of upper level, open-air spaces that can accommodate intimate dinner parties, rooftop gatherings, or provide private vantage points for enjoying sunsets. The massive amount of work needed to update and upgrade the four-bedroom, five-bathroom home, took longer than expected and required the owners to take on a much larger role managing the transformation than originally anticipated.

“I had to schedule subcontractors months in advance and make sure everything kept moving along. It was a bit like babysitting,” Kelly Feldman recalled.
As challenges arose, solutions were found. Removing a wall separating the billiards room and wet bar was complicated by the fact it was a load bearing wall, connecting trusses supporting the second floor. By safely dismantling the maximum amount of wall possible and commissioning a custom piece by renowned artist Alex Turco, the former barrier became a breathtaking focal point entitled, “Woman in Silver.” Also among changes to the interior and exterior, were the installation of more than a dozen windows in an eastern facing first floor wall to allow more natural light inside, plus take advantage of spectacular views. A solid entryway interior wall was remade into recessed, lighted cubical shelves that showcase antiques, artworks and collectibles acquired during the couple’s worldwide travels. State-of-the-art Smart Home technology installed throughout the house make security, lighting, shades, drapes and climate control conveniently accessible on or off the premises, using wall-mounted iPads placed throughout the interior or smart phones. High tech touches also incorporated an LED TV screen into a master bathroom mirror. www.TampaBayMetro.com

The result is an aesthetically pleasing and highly impactful interior blending white, black and grey shades, incorporating materials ranging from travertine to slate and wall treatments featuring velvet to glass beads, highlighting big, bold ceiling-mounted light fixtures to marble steps, lined with motion sensor lights and accenting with Italian cabinetry to one-of-a-kind artworks. Even the family pet was addressed in the planning. A dedicated room for their dog, Noel, is covered in custommade, velvet-flocked dog-inspired wallpaper and overlooks an adjoining Asian-influenced yard and walkway. Not all that was original to the house was obliterated. Still in place is a curved staircase with metal railings that apparently had been lowered in place before the ceiling was installed. Alongside it is a glass encased elevator that moves between the main room and the 25-foot high ceiling. Both have been refurbished and burnished to complement the current aesthetic. M
“I wanted it to be glam but also cozy. The house lended itself to a contemporary look that is a little Miami-like. We go there often. It’s one of our favorite cities,” Kelly Feldman said. “However, it was even more important to us that our home also felt like our most favorite city, Tampa.” 58

Passionate, Creative and Intense The Birchwood’s New Executive Chef, Luke Decker | By Ronda M. Parag
T
here are many new and exciting things cooking up in the kitchen at The Birchwood. First, is the announcement of their new Executive Chef, Luke Decker, who will oversee all culinary operations at the property. Second, is the announcement of the new Chef de cuisine, Anthony Decker, Chef Luke’s brother. The new duo will be marketed as the “Brothers on Beach” as The Birchwood sits on scenic Beach Drive in downtown St. Petersburg, overlooking the beautiful waters of Tampa Bay. Upon being appointed, Decker quickly created and implemented a new menu that offers a variety of new choices for brunch, lunch and dinner at The Birch & Vine Restaurant, located inside The Birchwood. Decker has been working at the restaurant since its opening in 2013, and his familiarity of the kitchen and staff allowed for him to move quickly in executing the delivery of the new menu. Chef Luke’s intense work ethic, technical skills and love of cooking,

fuels his excitement to bring his culinary skills to guests. Combining the experience of his brother Anthony, who brings years of experience at Felidia in NYC working as Chef de cuisine under owner, Lidia Bastianich, the culinary experience at The Birchwood continues to rise. “There are lots of options on the menu and I feel like there is something for everyone,” said Decker. When asked what dish on the new menu is most exciting, Decker offered, “My favorite dish to make and present is the tuna, because I think it has the best wow factor when it’s brought to the guest, however, if I were a guest in the restaurant, I’d order either the carbonara or the ribeye.” METRO: When did you know you wanted to be a Chef ? DECKER: Originally, I worked in retail, but my brother, Chef Anthony, convinced me to come work with him at Bella Brava. I’ve loved it ever since.

M: What is your favorite cuisine to cook? D: At home, I like to cook steak or shrimp on the grill. At work, I love to cook fish and use the great local produce that is available such as heirloom tomatoes, radishes, and citrus. M: Favorite kitchen equipment? And advice for a home enthusiast? D: One must have a good chef’s knife and don’t be afraid to use salt. M: We saw you compete in the Epic Chef Competition last summer. Tell us more. D: The mystery basket challenge benefitting Feeding Tampa Bay was a wonderful experience. The mystery ingredients were maraschino cherries and bologna in one basket and the other was ground turkey and baked beans. I had never competed in the challenge before and the experience took me out of my comfort zone, and made me a lot more comfortable cooking for an audience. M: What do you do for fun? D: I love to go to sporting events, play with my kids and sleep. My wife and I have two boys, Sean, 6 and Michael, 2. M
