Check out FOODIE on page 34. We had a chance to experience perhaps the most iconic restaurant in Tampa Bay, Bern’s Steak House, for a selection of new menu additions. Executive Chef Chad Johnson and his team expertly prepared dishes that may be added to the spring menu from starters to main dishes. We gladly welcomed the chance to be a guinea pigs and try out the expertly paired dishes with wines chosen by Head Sommelier Brad Dixon.

Innisbrook Resort Hosts The PGA TOUR® Valspar Championship
The PGA TOUR® Valspar Championship returns this March 16 to 19 with four days of golf action, plus a host of fun activities that make it Tampa Bay’s hottest spring sports ticket and a major community event.
“Sam Burns, who won in a thrilling playoff last year, is looking to make it three wins in a row on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort,” says Tournament Director Tracy West. “He will be challenged by a top field that includes Jordan Spieth, winner of the 2015 Valspar Championship and three Major Championships, returning for the first time in five years. The rest of the
field promises to have many familiar names as well.”
There is more to the Valspar Championship than great golf, with the Hooters Owl’s Nest and Snake Pit Club accessible by premium tickets and other great venues with spectacular views throughout the course for those with grounds tickets.
“New in 2023 is The Rooftop, a prestige venue at the 18th green with music, food and fun. Former PGA TOUR pro and CBS Sports commentator Colt Knost will host an exciting lineup of celebrity guests. You never know who you will see at The Rooftop,” says West.
Every tournament day offers something different. On Friday, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the wearing of the green. Saturday means Valspar LIVE, where tournament patrons will be able to enjoy country music superstar Darius Rucker with a free 90-minute show after the conclusion of play. And on Sunday — a champion will be crowned.
Tickets are now on sale at www.ValsparChampionship.com for all tournament days — both grounds tickets and premium ticket options.

The Inspiration behind the Tampa Museum of Art’s annual CITY: Fashion+Art+Culture event, Naeem Khan, took some time to speak with Tampa Bay METRO about the upcoming March 4, 2023 event.
By Ronda M. Parag
METRO: Tell us about yourself.
Naeem Kahn: I love life. Art, culture, history, family, fashion, cooking, travels. I grew up in a family of artists and fashion. My father is my most important inspiration and my mother, salt of the earth who loves me unconditionally. How can you not love life?
METRO: What inspires you and your creations?
NK: Fashion for me is about history, travels and culture. Nature inspires me. A great book opens my mind to unimaginable thoughts. Fashion is about how we live and function. Life itself is the greatest fashion inspiration.
METRO: When did you know that you wanted to be in fashion and become a designer?
NK: As a young boy of 12, I would get lost in fashion magazines, imagining the life of fashionable women across the world. The clothes they wore and their lifestyle. I knew then I loved fashion and hopefully one day would be a designer. But, I never imagined my dream would be a reality.
METRO: If you could have been anything other than a fashion designer what would you have been?
NK: I also loved architecture as a kid. Dreamt of beautiful structures and interiors. Architecture would have been my next best love.
METRO: Who is your muse?
NK: The one’s I love are my muse, as they bring strength to whatever I do.
METRO: What is a favorite fashion trends, both past and current?
NK: I do not follow trends. My favorite though was the ‘70s. Life was about freedom and fashion reflected that. It’s my favorite era of fashion.
METRO: Your favorite legendary fashion icon?
NK: My favorite fashion icons are Dior, YSL, Jean Paul Gaultier and Halston.
METRO: Fool proof fashion must have items?
NK: A classic black dress. A great cashmere shawl. A string of pearls and diamond studs. A pair of classic jeans and a crisp white cotton shirt or t-shirt.
METRO: What can we expect from your runway show at the Tampa Museum of Art?
NK: I am very excited to show my collection at the Tampa Museum on March 4th. The collection is based on my love for flowers.
METRO: Why and how did you become involved with CITY for the Tampa Museum of Art?
NK: I am a big supporter of the arts, specifically contemporary art. Tampa Museum of Art is one of the museums that realize the importance of fashion in arts. Hence, my love for the Tampa Museum of contemporary arts.

Partners place monthly orders and receive diapers at no cost, to distribute to their clients. Each year the JLT Diaper Bank distributes over 500,000 diapers through these partners.
You can join the fight by donating diapers today. The JLT Diaper Bank accepts open or unopened packs of diapers and unopened diaper creams and wipes at our Diaper Bank collection points around Hillsborough County.

A Modern Transformation
By Mary Lou Janson
Interior Design: Lisa Gilmore Design
Home Photography: Amy Lamb, NativeHouse Photography
The Mediterranean-inspired architecture and rooms boasting rich, warm colors, dark wood floors and ornate metal and glass chandeliers made such an impression on Katie and Mike Johnson that they decided to put their nearby, newly renovated home on the market and relocate to the Coachman Ridge residence.
“I fell in love with the architecture and the overall feeling I got when I walked into the house,” recalled Katie who took an impromptu tour during an open house. “It was designed for indoor/outdoor living and the Florida lifestyle. I could immediately picture raising my young family there. I called my husband and said I know we aren’t looking but I just fell in love with a home.”
As years passed and the family grew from daughter Annie, now 13, to include Jack, age 5, the couple realized they were ready transition to a more neutral color scheme and more open floor plan.
“The home was beautiful but had a very heavy, Tuscan look to it, ” Kate recalled about the original interior design.
The Johnson’s search for the right firm for the renovation led to Lisa Gilmore Design.
“I wanted a design that reflected my family and our lifestyle, a home we could really live in and a design that was comfortable for our everyday life, but pretty enough for entertaining. Lisa Gilmore really delivered on my unique style,” said Katie.
Gilmore and her team focused on transforming the 4,500-square-foot, four-bedroom, five and a half bath dwelling into a more modern and approachable aesthetic. That meant moving away from gold tones, Venetian plaster walls and small, segregated rooms.
“We managed to blend traditional Mediterranean with a California vibe by making areas more roomy and airy and mixing in thoughtfully placed antiques,” Gilmore said. “The overall look is now light and white with natural wood tones and punched out colors like the green velvet sofa in the living room.”
The hybrid design still needed to be family friendly and functional. That meant maximizing the main living areas for family gatherings, while still

maintaining a sense of intimacy and incorporating low maintenance materials that added flair without showing wear and tear, like the luxury vinyl plank flooring installed throughout the residence.
”This is a young, fun family so we wanted to energize the space and bring it to life,” Gilmore said. “We also brought in lots of artistic elements and lots of hand scraped wood with variations that we mixed and matched.”
A powder bath gave way to a walkin wine room framed by 300-year-old wood and glass doors imported from France. A home office located near the kitchen became a casual dining nook.

A formerly blank wall bordering the stairs leading to the children’s bedrooms and playroom is now a dynamic exhibit of original drawings by both siblings, vintage posters representing the family’s favorite travel destinations, plus treasured photos and framed mementos.
“We wanted it to be a space celebrating the walkway from the adult zone to the fun zone,” Gilmore noted.
Other distinctive touches found throughout the household include patterned wallpaper on the laundry room ceiling, an embroidered headboard in the primary bedroom and a half moon-shaped window repurposed from Clearwater’s historic Belleview-Biltmore Hotel that’s been retrofitted into a wall shared by a hallway and the walk-in wine room.

Bern’s Steak House Evolves With Modern Menu Changes
By Ronda M. Parag
As 2023 begins, it’s time to reflect on the past, but also charge forward with bold, new, fresh ideas, and in the case of Bern’s Steak House, spring menu changes. Executive Chef Chad Johnson along with Chef de Cuisine, Brent Hunt, and the entire kitchen staff have been working to develop a refreshed menu.
While staples of the menu remain the same including the dry-aged for 45+ days, in-house trimmed and cut NY Strip, Delmonico, Porterhouse and T-Bone steaks with the untouchable classic sides of French Onion Soup Au Gratin, House Salad, Baked Potato, Onion Rings and the Vegetable of the Evening, Johnson has been working to add modern dishes that will add some fun to the menu.
As some have noted founder Bern Laxer was part genius, part madman. There are many facets of Bern’s operations that have held true to the past, but today his son David Laxer and the entire culinary team want to add to the variety and seasonality of the menu. “Chad Johnson has been part of the Bern’s family for more than 18 years,” says David Laxer, owner, Bern’s Steak House. “I know that he and his team will honor my father’s legacy and uphold the Bern’s standard of excellence, while adding to our guest’s experience and memories.”
We recently had the wonderful experience of a wine pairing,
four-course dinner to taste testing some of the items that will likely be added to the spring menu. Head Sommelier Brad Dixon paired the dishes with amazing wines to bring out the flavors of each dish. As each course was brought to the table, both Dixon and Johnson discussed the dishes and wines in depth, and what made them special and worthy of a spot on Bern’s menu. An alternative to the classic French Onion Soup and house salad would be the Chilled English Pea Soup and the Lobster & Vegetable Salad. The beautifully presented soup had flavors of mint, harissa and pickled carrot, while the salad had large chunks of lobster, avocado, jalapeño with a delicious vinaigrette dressing. A 1999 Scharzoh Riesling accompanied the dishes, which Dixon said would pair nicely with the heat of the harissa and jalapeño of the dishes.
Next, out came Maple Kabayaki King Salmon and Cream Fed Pork paired with 2005 Tollot Beaut Chorey les Beaune. Both dishes were expertly prepared and would certainly recommend as an alternative to ordering a steak. Finally, we had a specially prepared trio of steaks — Lobster Crusted Tournedos with tarragon and tomato, Wagyu Flank
Steak with beef rib sofrito and Cognac Aged Delmonico topped with vanilla bean butter. Served with a delicious 1994 Ibernoble Crianza Ribera de
Duero wine. We certainly savored each bite. New menu side dishes include the Asparagus Gratinee, Butter Braised Radish and Smoky Steak Fries. “Radishes are one of the most under appreciated vegetables,” said Johnson. We loved how they were prepared with an insane amount of butter.
Of course, no dinner at Bern’s is complete without a visit to the Harry Waugh Dessert Room. Pastry Sous Chef Hannah Thomas created an amazing Hummingbird Cake with pineapple, pecan and roasted banana ice cream, and a Caramelized White Chocolate Tart. The cake paired with a 1978 Chateau Rayne Vigneau Sauternes and the tart with a Carrot Cake Old Fashion — dessert in a glass, all by itself.
“While we look ahead at how to best serve our loyal guests, we are staying true to our roots of what makes Bern’s so special — “classic dishes made with love and best-in-class ingredients,” says Johnson. “This menu gives our guests the balance and respect to what’s new, versus what our guests have grown to love over the decades. We aren’t changing, we are evolving.” M

Whether it’s calming us down or revving us up, music can be good for the heart. Such is the therapeutic power of music.
But did you know that music can also help save a life? A cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, often while at home, at work or at play. And you could be the beat for someone you know and love. The American Heart Association believes anyone can learn the simple steps to save a life, and everyone should, with just two simple steps:
1.Call 911.
2.Push Hard and Push Fast until help arrives.
But you may feel more confident performing Hands-Only CPR and ensuring you are staying between 100-120 compressions per minute by singing a song while you perform the compressions.
Some examples of music that stay between 100 and 120 compressions per minute are: “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepson, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Diana Ross, “Macarena” by Los Del Rio, and “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor.
You can find more songs online at: www.tinyurl.com/bethebeatspotify, but here are some favorites from our local Leaders with Heart.

Tampa Bay Go Red for Women event focuses on saving lives
The American Heart Association is calling on Tampa Bay residents to “Be the Beat” and learn CPR to save lives through its iconic Tampa Bay Go Red for Women Event and American Heart Month activities in February. According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a spouse, a parent or a friend. This February during American Heart Month, the American Heart Association sheds light on the importance of knowing Hands-Only CPR. This year’s heart month theme, “Be the Beat,” urges people to be the beat it takes to keep someone alive by learning the two simple steps it takes to save a life.
• More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States each year, with about 70% happening in homes.
• CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
• Women are less likely to receive Hands-Only CPR because people fear accusations of inappropriate touching, sexual assault, or injuring the person.
• Hands-Only CPR involves two simple steps and anyone can learn it from a 60-second video available at heart.org/handsonlycpr.
• Step 1: If a teen or adult in your home suddenly collapses, call 911 immediately.
• Step 2: Place one hand on top of the other as shown in the video and push hard and fast on the victim’s chest.
The highlight of American Heart Month in Tampa Bay will be the Go Red for Women Luncheon February 10, which will be held from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Armature Works in Tampa. Tickets and information at www.TampaBayGoRedLuncheon.heart.org.
Since 2004, Go Red for Women has had a profound impact on women’s health. As the trusted, passionate, and relevant force to eradicate heart disease and stroke, through the Go Red for Women movement, the American Heart Association remains steadfast and committed to meeting the comprehensive health needs of women — at every life stage.
The Go Red for Women Event is designed to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for women in the United States, as well as generate funds for lifesaving cardiovascular research for women.
Go Red for Women is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and the Tampa Bay event is locally sponsored by Tampa General Hospital, Encompass Health, Bristol Myers Squibb, ConnectWise, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Raymond James, Ultimate Medical Academy, Avalon, HCA Healthcare-West Florida Division, Healthe Systems and Old Republic Title, BayCare, Brown & Brown of Florida, Inc., Chenoa Information Services, Inc., Cogent Bank, Companion Data Services Ernst & Young LLP, IntraFi, Maxim Healthcare Staffing, MicroLumen, Optum Insights, PAR, Inc, PwC, Pinnacle Home Care, Questmont Virtual Family Office, RSM US LLP, Schellman, Tampa Bay Rays, USF Health, Valley National Bank, Vertex, Vpay. Gown Trends 2023 |
By Ronda M. Parag
From edgy to traditional, the wedding gown sets the stage for the entire theme of the wedding. Designer gowns from the shape and fabric to the detailing on the sleeves, necklines and backs are an important consideration for each bride-to-be when selecting a dress.
Regardless of the designer, it is important to look and feel your best, as all eyes will be on you.
The gown should embody your personality and turn heads as you walk down the aisle. “Don’t be afraid to surprise yourself,” said Mallory, Manager at Malindy Elene Bridal. “If you find you love something you didn’t expect to that is okay! I always say “you don’t have to stick to your Pinterest board.” As long as you feel like yourself and the dress makes you truly happy, then that’s what matters most!”
Classic silhouettes, gorgeous fabrics, stunning cuts and pops of color are trending this season.
Romantic gowns with beaded details, silk, flowing tulle and dramatic trains are shown in a variety of collections this season.
Bridal gowns by Haley Paige offers modern and playful design, while boho brides seek vintage vibes that have an Old World brought to life with flowing fabrics and classic silhouettes.
This season in the Anne Barge collection, there is an emphasis on necklines, whether its chic asymmetric, classic high neck in embroidered lace or a straight strapless touched with a froth of organza. Scattered floral appliqués especially on trains and veils, and voluminous ball gowns are favorites from spring that continue to charm. The Anne Barge collection combines romantic and contemporary elements in stunning, timeless designs. W+E

Anna Lucia Events was the planner and designer for Pavilion XXXVI held at the Tampa Museum of Art. The event was co-chaired by Cassie & Jake Greatens, owners of Cass Contemporary and PNC Bank was the presenting sponsor.
The theme of the exclusive black-tie event was Humana vs. Machina. “We ran with the theme of Humana Machina to create the juxtaposition of the two approaches to art – the process of art made by hand vs. the process of art made by machine,” says Anna Lucia Richardson, Founder of Anna Lucia Events. “It was also the exploration of this ongoing dichotomy, in which the décor that we designed with our creative partners, was represented with elements made by hand (the organic and natural components) and the technological elements incorporated into the design made by machine.”
During Pavilion XXXVI, Michael Tomor, Ph.D., The Penny and Jeff Vinik Museum Executive Director honored Allison and Robby Adams and Blake and Tate Casper for their dedication to the museum. Pavilion XXXVI benefits the Tampa Museum of Art’s programs and educational offerings.
