Season Of Love At Tampa Museum Of Art Fall is a great time to head inside to view the beauty of art. Opened in late August, Patricia Cronin’s commissioned sculpture Aphrodite Reimagined, was unveiled to explore the Greek goddess of love and beauty inspired by an ancient marble torso, from the Museum’s renowned antiquities collection. “Through the generosity of the Vinik Family Foundation, the Tampa Museum of Art is pleased to present the Season of Love with a fall lineup of three outstanding special exhibitions,” said Michael Tomor, the Museum’s Executive Director. “Each exhibition explores the theme of love at a different point in art history and, in so doing,

contributes to the Museum’s mission of providing opportunities to discover ancient, modern and contemporary art.” Art takes on all forms and Yoaoi Kusama; LOVE IS CALLING opens on September 26, with one of the artist’s iconic Infinity Rooms. Guests will enter a mirrored room with tentacle-like soft sculptures hanging from the ceiling and positioned on the floor. These forms glow with bright, changing colors, and feature Kusama’s signature polka dots. The multi-media, kaleidoscope installation, allows guests to hear an audio of the artist reciting a love poem in Japanese, as they walk throughout the installation. The poem, titled Residing in a Castle of Shed Tears, reflects Kusama’s musings on love, life, and death. “We are especially excited to share our recently acquired Yayoi Kusama Infinity Room, LOVE IS CALLING,” said

Jeff and Penny Vinik. “The Vinik Family Foundation is dedicated to bringing world-class experiences to Tampa Bay and presenting inclusive and interactive exhibits and installations.” In October, a retrospective of Robert Indiana’s sculpture will feature neverbefore-exhibited examples of the artist’s iconic artwork LOVE, in celebration of the American artist’s 90th birthday. The exhibition is organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY. The Tampa Museum of Art exhibition’s Season of Love is sponsored and made possible by the Vinik Family Foundation. Patricia Cronin Responds to Classical Antiquity: Conversations with the Collection will be on view through January 6, 2019. Yayoki Kusama LOVE IS CALLING will be on view through February 14, 2019. Robert Indiana: A Sculpture Retrospective will be on view through March 17, 2019.

On the Pulse of Tampa’s Culinary, Arts and Downtown Scene: Nancy Seijas-Kipnis While she was not raised in Tampa, Nancy Seijas-Kipnis, a native New Yorker, has embraced our city, as if it were her own, representing many local and state initiatives with her communications prowess over the past 15 years. Seijas-Kipnis has worked on projects that have put their mark on Tampa Bay and span from downtown Tampa development projects, to arts and culture, culinary launches with nationally famed restaurants and celebrity chefs, as well as, national lifestyle brands. METRO had a chance to catch up with Nancy, who is always on the go sharing Tampa’s most interesting news and making connections. 12

METRO: What is one of your favorite things about Tampa? Seijas-Kipnis: We have amazing public art and a city that believes in the transformational power of public art. You can find examples of powerful design everywhere, and that has connected people, community and our surroundings. METRO: What has made the biggest difference in downtown? S-K: Pedestrians, a more walkable city, with Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and The Riverwalk. New residential buildings, restaurants, robust programing at cultural venues. Thanks to the pioneering work of Viniks’ Strategic Property Partners, the Water Street project will be a crowning achievement for Tampa. METRO: What is your greatest love? S-K: All things culinary. I see myself as a gastronome with an ardent interest in culinary history, culture, skills and talent. METRO: What do you treasure? S-K: I collect Twentieth-Century American Graphics, maps, and vintage cookbooks. One of my favorite pieces is a 1894 cookbook, The Epicurean, by chef Charles Ranhofer of Delmonico’s, the very first public dining room opened in the United States. METRO: What has been Tampa’s greatest improvement in the last 15 years? S-K: Our food scene. Tampa has incredibly talented chefs that are iconic to our region including Marty Blitz, Jeannie Pierola, Chris Ponte, Ferrell Alvarez, Greg Baker, just to name a few, yet there are so many others, some moving specifically to Tampa, such as Anne Kearney. METRO: What’s one thing you look forward to in Tampa’s future? S-K: Currently, Sparkman Wharf. METRO: Favorite place to reflect? S-K: I live on Harbor Island and love to sit on the docks and take the city in up close from a different perspective. Those docks are magical.

Renovations of Rooms and Interior at Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina The ownership group of the Marriott Waterside Hotel, Strategic Property Partners, LLC, has undertaken renovations as part of its plan to improve the hotel, as the construction of the new JW Marriott is underway. Combined, these hotels, as part of the new Water Street Tampa neighborhood, will create the largest collection of hotel rooms and meeting spaces in the Tampa Bay area, with a combined 1,246 rooms and 150,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The Waterside rooms have a completely redesigned interior with minimalist and coastal elements and new artwork, flooring and lighting fixtures. The lobby will undergo a transformation and a new sports gastropub will replace Champions, and will be announced soon. All improvements will be complete in early 2019. More than 1,000 alumni, teachers, families and students filled the Corbett Prep campus on Aug. 18, 2018 for a 50th anniversary celebration for the private PreK3-8th grade school. Guests enjoyed browsing photos, yearbooks and other memorabilia, before a special program attended by long-time teachers Gery Morey, Kathy Folen and Debi Brockmeyer, retired teacher Judy Sobel, board member Bette Maniscalco and retiring Associate Headmaster, Pam Ripple. For 50 years, Corbett Prep has lived its founders’ dream to create an educational environment of unlimited possibilities that would cultivate the gifts and talents of every student. Founders Marilyn Gatlin and Betty Anderson embraced a philosophy that happy students – respected as individuals and allowed to fulfill their needs to “play, investigate and be

themselves” – were more open to learning than students who felt unhappy, tense and fearful at school. Gatlin and Anderson named their school Independent Day School, moving to its present-day campus in Carrollwood in 1970, when it outgrew its first home in Temple Terrace. IDS was renamed Corbett Prep in 2012 to honor Tampa philanthropist Cornelia Corbett and family. The 13th Annual Martinis for Moffitt: Known for being one of the hottest events of the summer, Martinis for Moffitt created and hosted by Bay Area Advisors (BAA), raises funds for Moffitt Cancer Center’s Advanced Prostate Cancer Collaboration, Moffitt’s Adolescent & Young Adult Program. More than 1,135 people enjoyed over 7,000 Tito’s martinis, delicious food, raffles, a silent auction, great music by DJ Fresh and dancing at The Straz Center. BAA is donating a record $265,000 from this year’s event. | 21st Annual Celebrate Sinatra: The annual 1950s style nightclub party, was created by Ken Walters to celebrate Frank Sinatra and the big band era. Held this year at The Orlo House & Ballroom, guests enjoyed an open bar with a martini bar, bubbles, beer, wine, cocktails and delicious food with a craving station, shrimp & cheesy grits, sushi rolls, risotto bar and much more. Guests danced to music on two stages by talented musicians including Lisa Casalino, Andy Stefano, Bryan Hughes, Paul Phillips and Keith Scherer. | Art Ties Us: The art contest and Gala event was the brain child of Laurie Stogniew from Bayshore Marketing Group and held at The Birchwood, with full support of owner, Chuck Prather in The Grand Ballroom, with tastings from local restaurants including Birch & Vine, Stillwaters Tavern, 400 Beach Seafood & Tap House, 1200 Chophouse, The Mill and MacDinton’s Irish Pub. 15th Annual Fashion Funds the Cure When: May 19, 2018 Where: Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal 2 It was a great evening of fashion, cocktails and hors dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;oeuvres to benefit the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. It was a delight to watch children battling cancer make their runway debut. The children and professional models wore clothing from Dilliardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. As a special celebration, the children shared what they want to be when they grow up and they modeled their dream for the future. On the runway were future doctors, firemen, policemen, super heroes, ballet dancers, princesses and sports players. Jessie Palmer, ESPN analyst, NPCF National Spokesperson and former Gator, was the celebrity emcee for the night. Guests enjoyed open bar and delicious drinks and food from Capital Grill, Bonefish Grill, 4Rivers BBQ, Panera Bread, Kahwa Coffee, Le Segunda and others. Dr. Larry Williams and Dr. Mindi Giglio offer comprehensive advanced surgical techniques, coupled with personalized, friendly care in their St. Petersburg practice. Together, they tread a wide spectrum of general surgical issues including hernias, gallbladder disease, wounds and colon and breast cancer, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Williams also brings to the practice expertise in the vascular surgical field treating aortic aneurysms, carotid artery and peripheral vascular disease, with emphasis on endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), and stents for occlusive disease of the legs. Dr. Williams graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Medicine. He went on to his General Surgery residency at University of Illinois and completed his Vascular Surgery training at Northwestern University. He is board certified in General and Vascular Surgery. Dr. Williams is the Medical Director for the Wound Healing Center at St. Anthony’s Hospital and Director of Wound Care at Kindred Hospital. Dr. Giglio joined Dr. Williams in practice in 2014. After completing medical school at Nova Southeastern University, she went on to General Surgery residency at Largo Medical Center. She served as chief surgical resident from 2013 - 2014. While the surroundings and setting were mesmerizing, the actual living space within the 11th floor residence was lacking. So, prior to moving in, Maybrook opted for a total renovation and redesign of the residential space to better reflect her personal lifestyle.

Previously, the original foyer and main living area were lined with bookcases and bookshelves that disrupted the flow and confined the space. Rooms were dimly lit and floors covered in outdated ceramic tile, creating dark spaces and hard surfaces. Re-imaging interiors has been a constant throughout Maybrook’s life. A mother and grandmother, she previously was vice president of business development for a national interior design firm in Chicago, and was married to a partner in a large homebuilding company. “I want to change everything in every place I have ever lived,” Maybrook said. Currently she stays busy volunteering with local non-profits like the ALS Association Florida Chapter, Tampa Museum of Art and Trinity Cafe.

After collaborating with Kristen McKinlay and Melanie Rose, owners/designers of Tampa’s McKinlay Rose Interiors, Maybrook now enjoys a much lighter, brighter environment, that makes the most of the natural light flowing in from floor-to-ceiling windows and wall-to-wall sliding glass doors. One of the many striking features found throughout her home, are original works of art discovered during world travels, gallery visits and art festivals. Pieces from her private collection beautifully displayed against grey walls include a large scale metal sculpture, handblown glass, vibrant paintings and a commissioned portrait by artist Cora Waterhouse, who currently lives in Tampa. provide further evidence of Maybrook’s elegant and eclectic tastes. Kristen McKinlay explains the full service design firm follows a two-step process that creates a foundation for the final look. First, neutral tones are applied to walls. A native of Sarasota, McKinlay refers to that base color as “the beach.” Once beautiful, yet functional, core pieces are in place, rooms are ready for the finishing touches, bejeweled elements that add glamour. This second phase, or “the sunset,” selectively infuses bold accents into each setting. The end result exudes class, quality and color. Antique smoked mirrors, crystal chandeliers and champagne gold furnishings, polish this Harbour Island Plaza Condominium home. This project marks the third time McKinlay Rose has worked on a Maybrook residence. “When we first met with Sam we really clicked with her,” said Melanie Rose. “She is very artsy, she knows what she wants and she likes beautiful

design and décor. Basically, we get inside a client’s head to figure out what they want. It is like an artist who has a canvas and just starts painting. You don’t know exactly where it’s going until you move it along. She knows we can give her the look she likes.” Appointments at the firm’s South Tampa design studio to review sample fabrics, plus proposed wall and floor treatments, furnishings and light fixtures, enable clients to grasp what their places and spaces will look like when completed, but there are no sneak peeks along the way. Rather than piecemeal a project together by incorporating individual items over time, the design partners prefer to have clients vacate the premises long enough to allow them to put everything in its place. It allows

them to “put the icing on the cake,” prior to unveiling the final look for the first time. “Once we finish an installation, we get a lot of oohs and ahhs,” said McKinlay. “We have the client leave the house for the day and then come back home for the big reveal. We really have a ‘move that bus moment.’ We live for that day.” M

ho knew that going to an advertising club fundraiser wound turn into such an adventure? The fundraiser was a “suitcase party,” where everyone buys a ticket for a party held airside at Tampa International (Pre 9/11 days). Guests show up to the party with a suitcase packed and ready to leave, and if you are the lucky one to have the last ticket drawn, you received an all expense trip to Negril, Jamaica. The power of positive thinking prevailed, as I had told everyone that night I was going to win and sure enough I did. Steve and I landed in

Montego Bay with no idea what Hedonism II was, until we got into our hotel transfer for the hour plus ride to the resort. We had a great four days meeting many free spirited and polite couples, but we never ventured past the pool and beaches of the “prude side” or mild side of the resort. Fast forward thirty years, we receive an invitation to revisit the famed party hotel and get a tour of the upgrades, since new ownership has taken over. We thought, why not? It seems that Hedo’s new owner, a former mutual fund manager, has made a smart choice investing $10 million dollars in resort upgrades. In many ways, the resort and restaurants at Hedonism II are like any other all-inclusive resorts. But the nightly entertainment, and how the people are dressed at some of those beaches and pools, is where Hedo showcases its uninhibited side. Each night has a

t didn’t take long for Amelia Island native, Lee Aquino, to earn his way as Executive Chef at The Birchwood’s Birch & Vine restaurant. With a dynamic personality and hands on work ethic, Chef Aquino’s goal is to make Birch & Vine the top downtown waterfront restaurant in St. Petersburg. “After six successful years as Executive Sous Chef of the Tampa Yacht and Country Club, I felt it was time to check out the other side of the Bay,” said Chef Lee Aquino. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Lee lead our Birch & Vine team,” added The Birchwood owner, Chuck Prather. Trained under an apprenticeship with the American Culinary Federation in St. Augustine, Chef Aquino is known for pairing seasonal flavors with bold presentations

that excite the senses. Aquino’s favorite dish is the one he has yet to create, so don’t be surprised when you see and taste what he comes up with next. Aquino created a new menu that is appealing, approachable, and affordable. The menu offers more appetizers, light fare, and healthy options. “The new menu has been a hit and we have seen more locals wining and dining in our Lantern Lane Lounge too,” said Chef Aquino. “As I compass the room, I see happy guests, but before I head back to the kitchen, I introduce myself and let guests know I want their feedback and look forward to seeing them again and again.” The Traditional Manhattan has been a popular drink choice on the menu in the lounge.
