Publisher’s Notes Peace, Love and Understanding in 2019.
It’s a new year with renewed dreams, hopes and resolutions. Whatever your passions and resolutions for the new year, may they all come true. We begin 2019 with the annual Best of METRO issue. All year long, we check out Tampa Bay’s best in Arts & Entertainment, Dining & Spirits, Health & Beauty and Style & Décor. Get out there and discover the wonderful place we are all lucky enough to call home. We also had the opportunity to chat with Vivek and Sharmila Seth, founders of Children Across Borders, and discuss their charity and upcoming gala, Cirque du Bollywood. They are doing good works, both locally and in their home country of India, to help underprivileged children. Gasparilla season is almost here and we’ve found some essential style elements for every fashionista and a schedule of events that are not to be missed. ARGHHHH! METROHome Tour features the South Tampa home of Jonathan and Isabel Ellis. It was a collaboration between custom home builder, Taralon Homes and the design firm of McKinlay Rose. By bringing in a designer, the Ellis’ created their dream home, with a cohesive look and feel, that is uniquely their own. Choosing where to send your children to school can be a stressful and difficult decision. Meet three families who share their experiences, and why they are loyal to their choices, in Finding The Right Private School by Mary Lou Janson. For a quick overview of area private schools, take a look at the 49 schools that are included in the 2019 Private School List, compiled by the METRO staff. It’s a great place to begin, when evaluating private schools. Discover an ideal family escape, less than two hours away in Weekender, at the Reunion Resort. From the golf courses, to the spa and every type of accommodation, Reunion Resort, will have everyone in the family saying, “We don’t want to go home.” Enjoy,

“Jewels of the Imagination” Museum of Fine Arts
Jean Schlumberger (French, 1907–1987), Brooch, ca. 1955 Gold, rubies, diamonds, and aquamarine beryl © Tiffany & Co. Archives 2018
The latest exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts showcase the glitz and glam of jewelry designs by famed French jewelry designer, Jean Schlumberger, who is best known for his work at Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger was a master at using nature, and his exotic travels as inspiration for the bright, colorful jewelry designs, that were both whimsical and elegant. Many stylish women including Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Gloria Vanderbilt, Elizabeth Taylor and of course, Bunny Mellon, were drawn to Schlumberger’s creative and stunning designs. Jewels of the Imagination: Radiant Masterworks by Jean Schlumberger from the Mellon Collection, include 135 pieces from the personal collection of philanthropist and art collector, Rachel “Bunny” Mellon. The companion
10

exhibition, Drawn to Beauty: The Art and Atelier of Jean Schlumberger, was created by curators at the MFA to explore Schlumberger’s process as an artist and designer, while offering insight into his relationships with the jet set. The exhibition, which features sketches, photographs, objects d’art and personal items belonging to the artist, also includes jewelry from the Tiffany & Co. archives and from private collections. The two exhibitions showcase mid-century elegance from Jean Schlumberger. “These combined exhibitions offer a never-before look at the work and life of a man, who is recognized as one of the most important jewelry designers of the 19th and 20th centuries,” explained Stanton Thomas, MFA’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. “Style icons like Jacqueline Kennedy,
Audrey Hepburn and Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, were drawn to Schlumberger’s bold imagination and designs, and many had close friendships with the designer. Several of the pieces of jewelry have never been on view to the public and we are thrilled to be able to present this experience to the Tampa Bay area, as the only location these exhibitions are on view in the U.S.”
The two exhibitions will be on display at the Museum of Fine Arts through March 31, 2019. Museum of Fine Arts is located in downtown St. Petersburg. For more information call 727.896.2667 or visit www.mfastpete.org.

Pure Luxury From The Ground Up The 2019 Audi A6 The new Audi A6 delivers innovation that is intuitive, from the moment you get behind the wheel. Yes, the new A6 has a very stylish exterior, but the real pleasure comes from being behind the wheel. Climb into the driver’s seat and customize the car to whatever kind of driving experience you’re looking for. A smooth ride for a night on the town to a black tie gala, or a fun sporty Sunday drive on winding roads, perhaps. With a sound and light experience that envelops the interior, the new A6 has you covered there as well. What are the secrets behind all this driving pleasure? The new 3.0 liter V6 engine features a twin-school turbocharger that helps the engine produce 369 lbs. of torque. The new A6 reaches 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, not too bad for a sports sedan. Standard is the latest evolution of Quattro® all-wheel drive, which can quickly analyze vehicle date and proactively engage the rear drive axle. The Audi drive select mode allows settings for steering effort, engine response and ride quality, for creating a personalized driving experience. Lighting sets the mood, and the new ambient lighting available in the A6 allows for 30 vivid colors from blues, reds, yellows and purples, to be adjusted throughout the interior. The LED taillights offer dynamic animation. The daytime running lights also function as turn signal indicators, changing from white to yellow and move outward. The MMI® touch response system responds with voice, visual and haptic confirmation and is as intuitive as touch, scroll and swipe, that is familiar to those using a smartphone or tablet. From climate control to navigation, everything can be customized to the driver, with 400 settings available to seven key-linked driver profiles.

Topping Out Ceremony At Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa The final steel beam was ceremonially raised, on December 11, 2018, atop the new 564-room hotel tower, celebrating the construction effort and crews that are involved with the $700 million expansion at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa. The crews are working to complete the expansion set to open mid-2019. “Today is an exceptional day,” stated Jim Allen, CEO of Seminole Gaming and Chairman of Hard Rock International. “I thank everyone involved in this project, from the designers and engineers, to the day-to-day laborers that are showing the world what the Seminole Tribe and Hard Rock brand are truly about — unconquered vision, unparalleled service and unlimited future.” During the program, Allen thanked John Fontana for his service and dedication for his 38 years working with the Tribe. Fontana was a major force in the success and expansion efforts in Tampa. Belleview Inn Welcomes Guests It was a chilly morning in Tampa Bay at the official ribbon cutting and opening of the Belleview Inn in Belleair. JMC Communities and CEO Michael Cheezem, were the dreamers and creators of the restored and reimagined Belleview Inn. The original hotel was built by Henry Plant in 1897 and its original four-story structure, including the lobby and 35 rooms, are now the Belleview Inn. Several paintings in the lobby by renowned artist, Christopher Stills, depict the history of the hotel. “This iconic landmark has such a strong legacy here in Florida and we’re thrilled to write this new chapter in its story, and introduce Belleview Inn to a new generation of travelers,” said Michael Cheezem, chief executive officer, JMC Communities. “It’s imperative to us to preserve and maintain that legacy and respect its history, and we look forward to sharing it.” As part of the preservation and restoration that began in 2016, the main building was raised, rotated approx. 270 degrees and moved the length of a football field. The lobby, grand staircase, hardwood floors, fireplaces, guest room doors and Tiffany stained glass from the original building, are still intact at the Belleview Inn. Guests of the Belleview Inn may access select amenities at the nearby Belleview Country Club, including the oldest golf course in Florida, designed by Donald J. Ross and the dining outlets.

Bollywood Nights “Cirque du Bollywood” Returns To Tampa Benefitting Children Across Borders
Tampa residents and local philanthropists, Vivek and Sharmila Seth, created Children Across Borders in 2009, a charity, which serves children in the areas of education, health, housing & wellness in Tampa Bay and India. To date, Children Across Borders (CAB) has raised over $2 million dollars for its beneficiary organizations locally and around the world, and will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019. “We are very proud of its growth & impact,” said Vivek and Sharmila Seth. “We see it continuing to grow in other cities nationally & internationally, 34

with the support of a strong Board, our donors, and supporters.” To support CAB, every two years the Seth’s hold their signature event, Bollywood Nights. The black-tie or ethnic formal event, includes gourmet Indian cuisine, spectacular live auction items, raffle drawings on luxurious getaways, fabulous entertainment, and a beautiful night of fundraising. METRO recently had the opportunity to chat with Sharmila Seth, to discover the family’s favorite travel destinations and discover their motivation for helping others.
METRO: What was the motivation behind starting Children Across Borders (CAB)? SETH: My husband, Vivek and I have always had a passion to help pave the way for a brighter future for underprivileged children around the world. We were both born and raised in Bangalore, India and saw the need around us from an early age. After we immigrated to the USA for further education and were fortunate enough to establish great careers and raise our family, we both decided to give our time and energy to assisting underprivileged children in our community here in Tampa, as well as, back in India. Our common goal was always to donate a portion of our own paychecks, and coalesce contributions from other like-minded people, to deserving children-focused in organizations in both communities. We founded Children Across Borders after realizing that resources at non-profits were not effectively utilized, particularly in underdeveloped communities. We decided to build a platform to raise funds for worthy programs/organizations that positively impact disadvantaged children, establish a network of partner organizations and adopt sustainable programs that align with CAB’s mission. M: How are the CAB-sponsored organizations selected? S: CAB thoroughly researches and selects grassroots, children-focused charities in the areas of education, health, shelter, and wellness, with programs that impact each and every child within the organization, and the community as a whole. M: What is the most rewarding part of running a charity? And the most challenging?
S: The most rewarding part is getting to meet the children face to face and grasping the impact made by CAB. We encourage all our donors to visit CAB’s beneficiary organizations, as it makes a big difference to actually see the impact of contributions. The most challenging aspect, like any business, is raising the money – especially in non-profit. There is no product or service to sell, just pure philanthropy. We are lucky in the USA that community service and philanthropy start very early in school. Giving back and making a difference can benefit citizens globally. M: How did you settle in Tampa? What is your favorite aspect of the Tampa Bay community? S: We moved to Tampa in early 2002, after living in NYC for 12 years, when my husband was hired to build the real estate Investment Banking group at Raymond James Financial. Our son, Curran was 7 months old at the time, and our daughter, Annika was born in Tampa in 2003. We have lived here now for 16 years and absolutely love it. Tampa is a growing community with passionate and caring citizens and offers plenty of sunshine and warm weather for outdoor sports & activities, with beautiful beaches. Plus, we have some amazing sports teams to brag about. M: Where are your favorite international destinations you have traveled to? How have your travels impacted how you give back to the world? S: We love to travel — especially as a family — since travel opens up new horizons for each of us and keeps us in sync with the world, while teaching us how best to connect our community here to the rest of the world. Our favorite international destinations have been (apart from India,
of course) Africa (S. Africa and Kenya), Asia (Indonesia, Japan and Thailand), Europe (Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, and Croatia) and S. America (Brazil & Argentina). We are a big travel family and have our eyes set on Australia and New Zealand next! Inequality exists in every country and we saw that first hand while growing up in India. We also knew that taking our children with us on our travels opened up their eyes to the global world at the same early age. People are one and the same no matter our differences or where we are from. Our emotional, spiritual & physical needs are the same - we all need something to eat & drink, live in peace and relative comfort, benefit from a quality education, need family, friends and a community. When we see children that don’t have these basic human needs, it is our greatest gift to be able to help in any way possible, hopefully leading to a stronger and more stable future for the world. M: When you are not working or running the charity, what do you choose to do in your free time? S: Reading, tennis, enjoying nature – beach, hiking, skiing, and most importantly seeing and experiencing new places – traveling and meeting new people. I also love the arts, photography, and the movies. M: In a single word, what do you believe the world needs more of? S: Compassion.
Bollywood Nights: Cirque du Bollywood will be held on February 23, 2019 at the Tampa Museum of Art. For sponsorship and ticket information, call 813.280.8547 or visit www.childrenacrossborders.com/bollywood-nights.

O
nce their sons were old enough to leave home to launch their respective college years and careers, Jonathan and Isabel Ellis were ready to make a move as well. Their previous house, and all of its furnishings, had served the family well, but it was time to start fresh. The empty nesters considered condominiums in downtown Tampa that would be close to the Schumacher Loop & Kendrick law offices where Jonathan is a partner. Instead, they selected a South Tampa neighborhood where Taralon Homes planned to replace an existing house with a custom-built, luxury residence. The combination of the central location and four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom floor plan, that comfortably accommodates occasional overnight guests, including sons Joseph, 24, David, 22, and Michael, 20, sold them on the site. Faced with a multitude of decisions regarding the design and décor of the new home, Jonathan turned to a personal friend for guidance. “When we built our house in Brandon, we met with a designer the builder referred to us. I remember trying to pick the formica in the guest bathroom. I liked the marble-looking formica but hated it by the time it was installed,” he said. “I decided this time to be careful and not assert myself so much.” “I knew Kristen (McKinlay), told her we were buying a house and what we were considering. I asked for her help in hopes she would give us some valuable insights. She made phenomenally good suggestions.” McKinlay is co-owner and principal of the Tampa-based design firm McKinlay Rose, that she launched with her business partner, Melanie Rose. “When I came on, they were unhappy with some of the selections that had been made by the builder. They did not think the choices were

special enough, so they hired me as a liaison to select all of the lighting and raw materials and revise floor plans. We did many upgrades and enhancements to correlate with a luxury new build,” McKinlay recalled. “Many of the items in the home are custom built or one-of-a-kind. Jon and Isabel don’t mind waiting for the perfect item, whether it takes months or even a year,” she added. “There are some unique furnishings throughout however, everything works really well together.” First acquisitions for the two-story, 4,178-square-foot home, were a pair of one-of-kind Louis-XVI, stainless steel chairs with tempered glass seats, that were prominently placed in the formal living room. “Jon fell in love with them and that set the mood for this vintage-meets-modern inspired home,” McKinlay added. “Isabel, who grew up in Colombia, South America, wanted elements from her childhood home integrated into the design.” Hand-scraped walnut wood floors are featured throughout the home. Dark wood shutters, curved archways and walls accented with pillars are among the touches that tie-in with Isabel’s family home. Fusing traditional components with plans for future, commissioned contemporary artworks for Jonathan, presents challenges, but introducing hand-selected, high quality lighting, furnishings and accessories, contribute to a cohesiveness that helps blend the two worlds together, the old and the new. “Everything is comfortable, pleasing and to our aesthetic,” he said. Opulent white walls, polished marble and cabinetry, create a striking contrast with the scraped floors, cool tones and lighting. Soothing colors showcase the portrait of Isabel that was created in Colombia. A silver crushed velvet chaise was designed specifically to accompany the painting, while across

the bedroom are two French silver, handcrafted barrel chairs. “I like the neutral shades and the purity of the white,” said Isabel. “I find the colors very relaxing and like that, they let me add greenery or bring color into a room with art.” Metals, mirrors, shine and sparkle are recurring themes throughout the house. A Currey and Company chandelier illuminates the formal dining room with “shimmering swags of mist-tinted glass beads,” and a reclining couch in the media room is upholstered in metallic, pearl essence leather. Staircase handrails are crafted from hand-forged Arcadian iron. Custom built-in shelves and cabinets include the marble-topped entertainment center in the family room and a maple wall unit designed by McKinlay Rose, and built by a local woodworker, featuring a hand painted glass tile backsplash, for Jonathan’s upstairs office. “Melanie and I have worked as a team from the beginning four years ago, taking the house from the construction to completion,” said McKinlay. “When Jon and Isabel do things, they do it right and that is how we like to do things too. That is why they hired us.” After methodically working their way through the household, room-byroom, over the years, the designers agree that the house is now fully furnished, but not quite finished. Trips to major U.S. cities, local galleries and even abroad to Isabel’s homeland, will enable the couple and their designers to find just the right works of art. “Art is very personal,” said McKinlay. “We can help pick out art, but that perfect piece has to have meaning to them personally.” M McKinlay Rose Interiors, LLC www.mckinlayrose.com

Finding The Right Private School
By Mary Lou Janson
Selecting the right private school for a child’s formative years can be daunting. It may require visiting various campuses, talking to faculty members, checking out what other students have to say about their experiences, and making sure everything from academics to athletics creates an ideal environment. Three local families shared their approaches to making this important decision. The Babb Family
Finding The Right Private School
The Babb Family
Carrollwood Day School www.carrollwooddayschool.org
No doors on the lockers opened the eyes of Michael and April Babb, to the caliber of character instilled into students at Carrollwood Day School, when the couple first visited the campus nearly a decade ago. The student guiding them around the school grounds that day explained there was no need to secure school books or other items stored on the premises, because there was no risk of theft. “The honor code is alive and well there,” said Michael Babb. That was among the appealing attributes this non-sectarian, co-educational, independent school offered that impressed the couple. While academic excellence was part of the family’s criteria, they also sought a well-rounded approach to development that encompasses individual character, physical progress, and emotional intelligence. CDS has been recognized as a National School of Character (www.character.org,) an organization advocating for integrity, honesty, respect, and other ethical values, to be fused into education for the betterment of our nation. The Babbs moved to Tampa from Richmond, VA in 2001, and knew little about local private schools. “We wanted a school that offered strong academics and a focus on character development,” Michael recalled. “There were only a handful of Pre-K through high school preparatory schools in Tampa at that time and we looked at all of them.” Today their son, Logan,12, is a seventh grader at Carrollwood Day School. Following his same educational
path is their daughter, London, a nine-year-old attending fourth grade, and youngest son, Luke, who is four and in Pre-K 4. All three began attending classes as pre-kindergartners and will continue there until they graduate. With a current enrollment size of approximately 1,100 students, CDS has some amazing construction plans for their campus in the near future. Expansion goals allow CDS to continue to pay close attention to innovation and creating environments conducive to learning and socialization. “Even with all of the growth, additions, renovations and improved technology, we do not want to increase the headcount in each classroom,” said Michael. For CDS, this means adding classes and teachers to ensure the student-teacher ratio stays low to continue the intimate, hands-on approach CDS has always had. “What CDS strives to do is give the students better experiences and opportunities to succeed,” said April. “There is such a strong curriculum here that we know the students get the academics. But they also get individual attention. There is a community feel here and no lack of involvement by students, faculty and parents.” From the open lockers to the student-led tours, it is clear that Carrollwood Day School is a special place to be a part of. A community that parents, faculty, and students would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Finding The Right Private School
The Miller Family
Berkeley Preparatory School www.berkeleyprep.org
Sisters, and identical twins, Alexa and Madeline Miller, were attending first grade at a school near their Westchase home, when their parents started researching options for their daughters’ future education. Jeff and Jen Miller sought a school their daughters could attend through high school, that offered a comprehensive curriculum throughout their primary and secondary educations. “We weren’t sure we wanted to make a switch, but when we visited Berkeley, we were so impressed with the well-rounded educational experience it provided to its students,” Jen Miller recalled. The co-educational, Episcopal school located in Tampa, adheres to a philosophy that “encompasses a balanced curriculum of academics and arts, clubs and activities, competitive sports and community service.” Both girls previously attended Summer Programs at Berkeley Preparatory School, which offers camps and classes for children PreK through 12 during summer break. That experience, and personal endorsements, made a convincing case for the Millers. “We have friends and neighbors who spoke so highly of Berkeley, it became number one on our list,” Jen added. The twin’s familiarity with the campus contributed to a smooth transition that was made even easier, by friendships that were quickly forged.

“They love going to school and are always excited about what the day will bring,” said Jeff Miller. “The teachers, staff and administration are always so excited to be there that it rubs off on the students.” “But the biggest thing is that all of their teachers have gotten to know our daughters as individuals. It’s important for twins to not be compared,” Jeff said. “Their teachers know their individual needs, their styles, what they do well and what they need to do better.” The faculty’s ability to effectively challenge 10-year-olds and fifth graders, Alexa and Madeline, to keep them improving, impresses Jen. “You want to push them to do their best. Jeff and I have talked about how we were sometimes bored in school. We never want our daughters bored,” she said. “The staff is really focused on the whole individual and core values like integrity. They are helping these children mature into adults.” The wide variety of classes, activities, athletics and clubs helped make Jeff a believer in Berkeley. “Berkeley students have so many opportunities to do so many different things. They can all find something that they like and then they will love doing it. The number of extra-curricular activities that is offered is like nothing I have ever seen at any school,” he said. “We are so excited for Alexa and Madeline to continue to grow and experience all that Berkeley offers,” Jen added.

The Maus Family
Finding The Right Private School
The Maus Family
Cambridge Christian School www.ccslancers.com
Proximity to their family-owned car dealerships that David Maus Jr. manages, was foremost on his family’s mind when they moved from the Orlando area to New Port Richey four years ago. However, when it came time to enroll their oldest daughter, Ava, in pre-kindergarten, David and Stacie Maus knew they needed to quickly learn about local schools. Stacie, who attended private schools, was in favor of their children doing the same. David exclusively attended public schools and advocated that option. “My mother, a school teacher who lived in Oviedo, had moved to the Tampa Bay area as well. She interviewed at Cambridge Christian School, was hired and had been teaching there for a year,” said Stacie. “We figured it must be a great school and decided to go look at it. What we didn’t realize was that it was an hour away from where we lived.” David agreed to tour the independent Christian school, but anticipated persuading Stacie to consider public schools. One visit to one school was all it took for them to agree. “It was evident that God wanted us to be there. All of the people we met were smiling, genuine and friendly and that is exactly what we want our daughters to be around,” said Stacie. All three daughters are currently enrolled at Cambridge, and will continue there until they graduate high school. Ava, seven, is in first grade, Ella, five, is a kindergartener, and Selah, 3, attends Pre-K3.
“We felt the spirit of God, the presence of God and the love of God,” David recalled during that initial visit. At first the commute was manageable because Ava often made the round trip with her grandmother, while Stacie looked after younger siblings, Ella and Selah, at home. The following year, when Ella enrolled, Stacie took over driving duties accompanied by two-year-old Selah. The two-hour round trip to school, twice daily, made complicated by road construction, took a toll on mother and toddler. It was time to consider other, closer schools, the couple agreed. Unfortunately, none could compare to the long-standing Cambridge traditions that build bonds among students of all ages, Biblical training for personal development, or the commitment to core traits that define Cambridge: Christ-follower, creative problem-solver, collaborator and servant leader. “Cambridge just makes good people. It is worth the drive,” said David, addressing both its evangelical and educational disciplines. Eventually, the family may move to shorten the driving distance, even if it means a longer work commute for dad. “These are genuine, loving people who love God and love each other. They want you to be as happy as you can be,” added Stacie. “This is what we want for our children.”

pen since September, Proprietor Susanne Byram, wanted to take things slow and start with coffee and croissants when The Left Bank Bistro opened. “We wanted to get to know the neighborhood,” said Byram. “Then we added lunch, and now we’ve been open for dinner for about six weeks.” Byram, who lives in Houston, but has a bungalow in St. Petersburg, fell in love with the area and decided to look for commercial property. The complete re-model took nearly two years, with Byram designing the interior herself. “I certainly could not have done it without the help of my daughter, Danielle,” said Byram. “It was a long process, as I wanted to preserve so much of the existing building. I wanted that 1920s feel and kept all the old windows and flooring.” New to the restaurant business,
Byram, who has always been intrigued by the 1920s and the Left Bank in Paris, decided to re-create a bistro interior and a menu reflective of the era. “It was an amazing time for artists, painters, writers,” said Byram. “They would all hang out and have a good time, and I wanted to create that at The Left Bank Bistro.” The cocktail menu lists drinks named for artists including The Picasso, a rye whiskey drink, The Fitzgerald, a vodka with elderflower, The Piaf, a Dobel Diamante tequila with simple syrup, lime juice and a splash of ginger beer and The Man Ray, a Van Gogh vanilla vodka, shot of espresso, Godiva Chocolate liqueur, Kahlua. Overseeing the kitchen is Executive Chef Thomas “Tommy” Mussarra. Chef Tommy is planning menu updates and creating a Chef’s Weekly Special. Striving to use only the freshest, seasonal
ingredients, and organic whenever possible, the dishes will be determined by what is available at market. The Bistro Burger has become a favorite among guests, along with the Bahn Mi, Snapper and Salmon. The burger is hand crafted, all natural black angus beef & wild mushroom duxelle, brie cheese, lettuce, pickled onion & bacon jam, and house aioli served with a side of bistro frites. The Bahn Mi is miso stewed short rib, shiitake pate, pickled vegetable aioli, pickled carrot & daikon, fresh Thai basil, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, and green onion served on a baguette. When the weather is nice, guests can relax and enjoy dining on the wooden deck. “I wanted to create a place where guests can have an experience with the food, ambience and linger longer,” said Byram.
